I think what is missing to Vash fan characterization most of the time is the horror of what he is and the fear that goes with it.

Like how, with vashwood, everyone makes Wolfwood to be immediately so accepting of him and worship him or whatever but he does not! He's afraid of Vash. A fear which sticks to his very bones for a good bit of the story.

And it's not unfounded. Vash is a nuclear bomb in flesh. We've seen what kind of damages he could do, be it either with Knives or Vash's own, unwilling, use of the angel arm.

Who, Vash included, wouldn't be afraid when faced with that reality.

I want y'all to think about the horror of aging too fast then not at all. The horror of your body becoming so unstable it's unrecognizable, wild and out of your control. Of being afraid of hurting anyone and having the raw power to level entire cities if you don't keep yourself in check perfectly. The horror of no one, not even yourself, understanding what you are.

The alienation of it all.

Million Knives is for the marginalized who felt like the whole world was against them and their only option for survival was to march on and bite back.

Which sound based until you realize you're biting everyone, including friends, family and yourself. It's not even survival anymore, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy of doom.

You're not even an ally to your own nor to yourself, just a sick and lonely creature.

Yeah, I think people sometimes misunderstand because Vash calls himself a pacifist but he's not an "anti-violence" kinda guy. He's anti-murder.

Violence is definitely on the table for him. That's why he's a gunman. He knows he needs to fight if he wants to survive as well as to protect people.

If he can avoid it, he will of course. But that choice isn't often his to make, is it.

Truly crazy that Knives personally handpicked the Guns as disposable weapons. Gave a number to each one of them, including Zazie, an entire planet worth of bugs.

But he did not give one to Legato. His crazy emo boyfriend is just built too different, you see.

Thinkin' back on it, there's a popular headcanon in vashwood fiction that Wolfwood would use lots of pet names for Vash.

And for the longest time I thought it was logical. Like, yeah it's kinda already something he does in canon too.

But really thinking about it, if they were lovers, I think he would tone it down actually.

Wolfwood callin' Vash all sorts of nicknames is his own way of keeping his distances. If he has no reason to stay away anymore, he would just use his name I think.

Same for Vash tbh. The only time he aknowledged Wolfwood as someone he cares about, he called him Nicholas. 👀
