I got to this fandom late, so now I’m catching up on some meme art.

One of the tragedies of Maul and Kenobi is that I think Obi-Wan would want nothing more for Maul than for him to turn to the Light. If nothing else, one less super powerful Sith running around is a net positive for the galaxy. But this is Obi-Wan Kenobi we’re talking about: bottomless well of compassion. He would want Maul to let go the pain and hate he’s clinging to and find peace, because Obi-Wan can see Maul is suffering, and he feels an intense drive to ease the suffering of others.

But another layer to this tragedy, is that I think Maul could, in the right circumstances, be convinced to turn toward the light. It would take a long, gradual change, and Maul would fight his own betterment every step of the way, but it could be done. But it cannot be done by Obi-Wan.

Through no fault of his own, Obi-Wan is the person Maul has chosen to project every ounce of his pain onto. His rage toward Obi-Wan is like a twisted comfort blanket to him. It anchors him. If he lets go of that, what would he have to hold onto?

Plus, Maul is well aware of the pain he’s caused Obi-Wan. He did it intentionally. How can Obi-Wan feel anything but rage and hate toward him? Revenge begetting revenge is the natural order of things. Mercy? Compassion? Forgiveness? These are not things that come from an enemy. Obi-Wan can say all the right things but Maul would never listen to him. Because in his mind, what could these words be but a trap?

And yet, despite everything Maul has done, Obi-Wan might be the one most willing to try.
