The Reddit Blackout, #196, And Being New to Tumblr

okay i've seen a lot of people in the past ~24 hours or so confused by everything going on with Reddit & Tumblr from both sides - people new to tumblr who don't know how to use it, and tumblr users who don't know what's going on with reddit and why many of its users have joined up here i know this isn't really related to my blog but fun fact about me: i was up until recently a very active reddit user and even mod a subreddit, but I've also been on tumblr for about 3 years now on different accounts, so I think I can see pretty well from both sides of this and explain what's going on this post will be split in 2 sections: what happened with reddit (and what #196 means), and a guide for new users

1. What The Hell Is Going On With Reddit?

The thing that's caused all this ruckus is a major change to Reddit's API, which is what Reddit provides to people so they can pull directly from Reddit to make third-party apps or tools.

The change is that Reddit is changing its previously free API to be paid. Which on its own kinda sucks for developers, but it's not unexpected. They need to make money somehow, right?

The problem is that the API pricing is WAY TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. The developer of the most popular 3rd party Reddit app, Apollo, says it will cost him $20 million a year to continue running the app as normal.

Essentially, this pricing forces almost everything third-party to shut down, which causes 3 major problems:

Third-party apps cannot keep running, which sucks for normal users because Reddit's official app is awful. It's slow, its video player is a thing of nightmares, it doesn't have many useful features third-party developers have made.

It sucks even more for visually impaired users because they can't use the official Reddit app at all. Reddit's official app does not work with iOS's native text-to-speech function. Third party apps, on the other hand, often do. So Reddit is forcing blind users away.

Third-party moderator tools cannot keep running, which sucks for moderators because many rely on these tools to properly moderate their subreddits. And moderators are often necessary, because without them subreddits get banned and hate speech and even CSA can often run rampant.

So you see why this change is bad.

Reddit users were PISSED.

So over the past week and a half or so, they have been working on organizing a site-wide blackout. The majority of the most active subreddits have now gone private. Some are only doing it for 48 hours, others (such as r/196) are doing it indefinitely.

That's why you can't access most of Reddit right now, and that's why many users have come here.

You're probably still wondering, though - what is this #196?

Well, as you may guess, it's connected to that subreddit r/196 I just mentioned. r/196 is a subreddit which only has one rule: every time you visit, you must post before you leave.

That's it, that's the subreddit.

The thing about r/196 that set it apart from most other subreddits - and what lends the subreddit's users perfectly to Tumblr - is that it was dominated by queer and leftist users.

So now they've come here and set up shop in #196 and r/196 so they can continue their merry little shitposting.

There's a ton of lore related to r/196, actually, but this is already a long tumblr post and quite frankly I cannot be bothered to write about it at the moment.

2. I'm Here From Reddit, What Now?

Hello there, random new user. As a double-citizen of Reddit and Tumblr, let me show you around this place.

First off, there are some other people who are better at explaining that I am who have made some really helpful things. Watch this Strange Aeons video as a guide to Tumblr culture and functionality and read this post which directly compares Reddit and Tumblr.

Assuming you've done that, here's some additional advice of my own:

Do you miss sorting subreddits by top of all time/the year/the month? Well, you can do something very similar with tags! If you go to a tag at the top of the screen you can select top, and then at the dropdown that says "all time" you can select different time periods! Even 6 months, which Reddit hasn't ever had.

Tumblr has a lot of cool customization features! Even outside your icon/banner/bio, you can change you blog colors and on desktop you can have an html theme (which has its own thriving community here). That customization is part of what sets Tumblr apart from everywhere else - I think you'll enjoy playing with it.

Notes will probably confuse you at first. Unlike the different numbers for upvotes and comments, notes combines the total number of likes, reblogs, and replies into the same number.

Outside of organizing your own blog, when making your own posts tags are what help other people find your post. Use them! But don't abuse them, because then people will just block you.

There are three ways of people finding your post: if someone follows you, if someone follows the tag(s) assigned to your post, and if someone is just scrolling through the tag(s) assigned to your post (and also the secret 4th way no one uses, which is finding it on the trending page, but even if people did use it no one will find your post initially that way)

tumblr is no longer The Discourse Website. And unlike what Reddit wants you to believe for some reason, it is very much alive still. Most of the people seeking fights have moved to Twitter (though some have also moved back here again). You will not get any brownie points for being a dipshit like you do on some subreddits.

So there, welcome to the hellsite (affectionate), you'll pick up on all the in-jokes eventually, for now just try not to be a nuisance and soon enough this'll be your new internet home.

Mohammed Alhabil (@mohammedalhabil200) is very sick right now. The tent he is living in does not protect him from the cold or the rain, and he has now contracted a fever that continues to worsen. In addition, one of his leg is seriously injured and he is unable to move any part of his leg. He also writes to me saying that he is dying of hunger. Mohammed is only 18 years old.

Mohammed was severely injured in a bombing that killed his brother Omar. He has already lost his father when he was 8 years old as his father was killed by the occupation in the 2014 aggression, and now he has lost his brother as well. Mohammed has been injured by the IOF on 4 separate occasions, and as a result his leg is now critically injured!

Mohammed requires continuous therapy sessions or else he may never be able to use his leg again! However, each session costs $50 a day, which is too much for him to afford! Moreover, food prices in Gaza has only continue to rise, and now they are struggling to buy food as well! Moreover, other than Mohammed, there are also 2 other people in his family who are temporarily or permanently disabled!

Meet Mohammed Taysir and his Family:

There's Mohammad, his wife, Basma, and their two children, Jude (who is four) and Yazan (who is two and a half.)

Before the war, Mohammad was a smartphone programmer; if people had problems with their phones, Mohammad would help fix those problems with software!

He loved his job, and is still very passionate about his work, his family, and his life.

Unfortunately that wonderful life has been stripped from him and his family due to the war on Palestine that began October 7th, 2023.

This is a watercolor I did of Mohammad's home. This was where he and his wife gathered to eat; where his children played; where the family lived and loved each other.

Their lives have been destroyed.

Right now, Mohammad and his family, like many others, are living in tents and facing another harsh winter. They need money for food, water, medicine, and other necessities, and are trying to make their way to safety to start a new life.

Hello! I’m Rhea and this is my 🏛️religious blog🏛️

I am an Apollo devotee (he’s my tutelar god), but I also worship Aphrodite, Hypnos, Tyche, Amphitrite, Hekate & Dionysus.

I love PJO and EPIC but separation between fictional content and my actual religion is a must.

I am relatively “new” to the religion, i joined in late 2022 but was very inconsistent till late 2024. My practice has grown a lot since then.

I created this blog to start giving e-offerings, apart from my regular libations and devotional acts. But- I’d love to meet other helpol’s and pagans in general. Community was once important in this religion I’d love to slowly build something like it.

I’m from Peru, an annoyingly catholic country in Latin America. I was raised culturally catholic but never really connected deeply. If anything, it pissed me off to see religion everywhere.

I’m 22, autistic and queer. Currently going through a communication (photography & writing) and business (marketing) double major.

Lady Khione is the Goddess-Nymph of Snow! She is the daughter of Boreas, the North Wind, and Oreithyia, a Nymph of chill mountain winds.

What is this blog?

This blog is a place to worship Lady Khione. This could mean prayers, digital offerings, hymns, artwork, etc. Not just from me, but anyone who would like to send in an offering or similar!

This blog is also a place to learn about Her! This could mean Her myths, Her domain, Her associations, worshippers’ experiences, etc.

Beliefs

This is a religious blog, meaning I and many of those who may follow genuinely believe in Lady Khione and the other deities in Hellenic Polytheism. If you are not a part of this religion and still want to follow/interact, I ask that you be respectful. Ask questions if you have them, but do not disrespect our gods.

This is also very much not a reconstructionist blog. If you are one, great for you! But I am a revivalist and therefore not as much of my worship has historical backing. Lady Khione was likely not even worshipped in Ancient Greece, and She may not have even been a goddess. I see Her as a goddess because of Her parentage and Her domain, but that is just me.

All are welcome here! And I mean all. By that, I mean any queer people, BIPOC, nonhumans, systems, those who are disabled, neurodivergent, mentally ill, and anyone else who does not wish harm on others. There is ZERO tolerance for racism, ableism, queerphobia of any kind (homophobia, transphobia, etc), or any other kind of hate.

Who am I?

Here, you may call me Snowflake or Star, as these are the names Lady Khione has called me. My pronouns are he/him, and I am a trans guy. I am a devotee of Aphrodite, Apollon, and Hypnos as well as Khione!

What to Expect

Besides everything stated above, I (❄️) will be sharing my personal experiences with Lady Khione. Also, because not much is known about Lady Khione, much of this blog will be UPG. I will make that clear in any posts I make about Her, but just know this.

Hello! I discovered your blog relatively recently so forgive me if you’ve already done this but would you consider compiling a list of all the times crossdressing has been done in bl? Whether as a plot-device, for comedy, for serious reasons, just all the times crossdressing as a trope has appeared.

In a similar vein if you wanted to explore it I’d also be interested in the breadth of trans rep in bl/queer shows and movies in Asian media and if that ever blends into the crossdressing (maybe also drag would be interesting to throw into the mix as well?). Also just an exploration of Queer Femme characters that are not made fun of or villainized by the narrative would be cool! Basically just exploring femme queer aspects in bl in all its good, bad, and I’m sure sometimes ugly forms!

Updates, Apologies, and Moving Forward!

Hello everyone! I am not dead, and this blog is not dead. I know I've been gone for a very long time again, and I'm very sorry.

I had to say goodbye to my cat, my emotional support animal, my baby. I won't say too much here, but she was suffering, and unfortunately there was nothing that could be done. My mental health is fragile at the best of times, and while I am okay and safe, it has been a difficult few months for me. I am also a full-time college student with a job, so all of my free hours were spent in grief. It's taken me a while to feel alright enough to come back, but here I am. I'm still passionate about queer representation in media, and I want to continue to share queer characters with the tumblr community. Starting tomorrow, I will resume the 8 times a day posting schedule that I was starting to utilize before my disappearance, as queueing posts makes my life much easier. I'm sorry if I don't respond to notes or asks left during my break. It's a lot to sort through and I value community engagement on this blog more than anything but I am just one person and I can only do so much. Feel free to re-send asks! Going forward, I'll be making a few changes. I am working on a publicly available google sheet of all characters that have been posted on this blog with results that I will link in a visible place so that people wanting to submit a character can (hopefully) quickly search to make sure that character hasn't been posted yet. I also will eventually be looking for another mod, although that will not be until the summer and I will make more posts when the time comes. I will personally be awol for the last few weeks of may and the first few weeks of june due to a job opportunity out of the country, but I am intending to have queued posts continuing to upload at the regular schedule during that time. Unfortunately this means I won't be able to edit mistakes or answer questions, but hopefully any issues can be addressed when I return. Writeblr Intro

Hello! My name is Kit. I am new to writeblr, but very old to tumblr. I live in the US, I'm 26 and use she/they pronouns.

I've been creeping on the tags for a while, but I finally made a blog just for writing. I'd love to share updates on what I'm writing, excerpts and talk about writing with other writers.

I'm currently writing my first novel, it's young adult high fantasy. I've written about 40,000 words in the universe, but I've recently finished a more detailed outline. So, I'm starting the real rough draft now that I know more of what I want to say.

A lot of my characters are queer and disabled, like me. I want to write books that are magical and that a lot of different people can see themselves in. I think fantasy serves as a cool conduit for imagining what the world could look like beyond a lot of the power structures we take for granted.

I'd love to follow other authors, particularly ones that are also working on longer term projects. I think it'd be cool to get feedback from people, or find other people who have been doing this longer and talk more about their thought processes. I'm open to following writers of all genres since I read them all and think there's so many cool things to learn from different styles!

Any advice on how to get started is appreciated, will be following anyone that interacts with this post.
