These are just some suggestions but there's many many more!! This is by no means a complete list.

I recommend to avoid authors who downplay the importance of black history or straight out deny how blackness is central to hoodoo. The magic, power and ashé is in the culture and bloodline. You can't separate it from the people. I also recommend avoiding or at the very least taking with a huge grain of salt authors with ties to known appropriators and marketeers, and anyone who propagates revisionist history or rather denies historical facts and spreads harmful conspiracy theories. Sadly, that includes some black authors, particularly those who learnt from, and even praise, white appropriators undermining hoodoo and other african and african diasporic traditions. Be careful who you get your information from. Keeping things traditional means honoring real history and truth.

Let me also give you a last but very important reminder: the best teachings you'll ever get are going to come from the mouths of your own blood. Not a book or anything on the internet. They may choose to put certain people and things in your path to help you or point you in the right direction, but each lineage is different and you have to honor your own. Talk to your family members, to the Elders in your community, learn your genealogy, divine before moving forwards, talk to your dead, acknowledge your people and they'll acknowledge you and guide you to where you need to be.

I hear the spirit saying, “It's not what you think it is.” I feel that you want to control everything. Sometimes it's necessary to surrender to the unknown. Not everything needs to be figured out. And if you need to figure out so much, you must know where you stand in someone's life. The person who is up for a talk deserves your love, not someone who can't give you any clarity. Try to be calm when you're triggered, and you'll make things work with this next person entering your life. This person will be able to pull you out of your fears and bring clarity to you.

The moment you release your fears regarding love, that moment is when you'll see everything clearly. Now I pulled some cards out to see what this fear was, and it was regarding the feeling of being tied down. Deep down, you want to marry, but at the same time, you're also afraid of marriage. I feel you know all of this deep down. You're that aware. You just don't know how to deal with this feeling of being stuck. You're afraid that the worst might happen in your love life because you've seen worse-case scenarios being played around you. You're afraid that society may not accept what you want out of connection because it doesn't fit with their standards, and that's the fear. The person who loves you triggers that wound of yours. They want to marry you, and they may come with their own rules and lives, which makes you scared. There are so many what-ifs in your mind. I feel you need to trust in the divine. You're such a beautiful soul. Who you are and what you do are even more beautiful. It's that one card that's showing that you're afraid that people will even accept who you are. I feel you have felt misunderstood a lot in your life.

But what I feel is that there are people who cherish you and see the best in you. They admire you. Just because some people don't see your value doesn't mean no one ever will. I feel these illusions have started to break in your psyche. You need to walk away from the broken pieces of the tower of fears you built in your subconscious. You're already purging. This wound comes from generations. You're healing it. Let the illusions shatter. Don't fight it. Don't try to make anything out of them. Let them go with grace. Let all of them flow into the abyss of pitch darkness, exactly where they belong. Let the light enter through the cracks in your broken heart.

Caribbean Folk Saints and Mighty Dead: A Precursor

We all have family members who take on an almost Mythic quality after they pass on. They may have been a character in life, or a perhaps a spiritual practitioner. Maybe they were known for their generosity, or lack of it, or their strength or brilliance. Nonetheless, it is someone who, even in death, still makes an impact. In personal practices, we may work with these ancestors for guidance and healing, but what happens when their influence spreads past your family, into the local community or even entire country? This and many other strange circumstances often explain the origin and powers of Folk Saints and Elevated Dead. I will be going into the various Folk Saints and Deified Ancestors of the Caribbean, (including Florida), but before I can do that I need to explain where these spirits come from, and why they are so potent in our everyday lives.

What are Folk Saints and Mighty Dead?

Folk Saints and Mighty Dead are spirits of dead people who were either elevated in life, or became elevated after death. Their elevation often is then connected to their ability to grant various petitions made to them. Some of the Folk Saints I will be talking about were used to disguise other figures who were outlawed by the Colonial government at the time, while others are various figures of marginalized communities who gained sorcerous or otherworldly reputations after death.

Cuba and Florida are Lands of diaspora and syncretism. Many different traditions abound and each tradition has multiple lineages, so the classification of spirits differs depending on the worldview of the person explaining. Some practitioners work within a framework of Catholicism, some use elements and some flat-out reject Catholicism completely for decolonization purposes. For this reason, I have differentiated Folk Saints from the Mighty Dead.

Folk Saints will include those spirits who are worked with in a Catholic context, but are usually not canonized or not at first. On the other hand, the Mighty Dead will include spirits who are venerated amongst Indigenous and African traditions in Cuba as well as the surrounding areas, as to not group them under a title created by Colonizers. If you are Cuban or Caribbean, these Folk Saints and Mighty Dead offer power at a closer degree because they are more proximal to your Spirit Court, and may even already have bonds with them.

It is important to note, spirits like Orisha and Cemí have very specific protocols, manners and taboos when approaching them, so this is best done with the help of a priest, such as Oloricha or Babalawo, or a Taíno Behike. These are not energies you simply feel drawn to and work with. Orisha and Cemi are in some cases Deified Ancestors and others Personified Forces of Nature, among other things. This varies from the Ancestors and Spirits I will be discussing in this series.

Benefits of Working with The Mighty Dead

Folk Saints and Ancestors give us a closer connection to the divine through their proximity to the Divine and their individual virtues and personalities. As with all spirit relationships, you will get out what you put in.

Folk Saints who are related to the Land you live on, such as Uncle Monday or Bessie Graham for us Floridians, can help to deepen your connection with the local community. They can help you to further your relationship with the Earth and introduce you to other Land spirits.

Spirits related to your Ancestry can help to work through generational issues. Some ancestral spirits, like José Martí or Guamá for us Cubans, are related to ideas of War, Rebellion, and overcoming oppression. These spirits can be worked with for the same pursuits of defeating oppressors in the modern day. Each spirit has a story and is multi-faceted, so it really depends on what your connection is to the Spirit and what you are capable of offering them.

How to Work with Deified Dead

Working with these spirits is individual to each spirit, based on what their heritage is, as well as their personal tastes. When starting out, it’s best to keep things simple. Instead of going and creating an entire altar dedicated to a spirit, begin by praying about it at your Bóveda or ancestral altar. Here, you may find that a spirit is not compatible with your current situation, or doesn’t want to work with you ever! Should the omens be good, however, and you may begin establishing a connection to that spirit Research and talking to other devotees can give you great insight into what a relationship with that Spirit can look like.

My formula for reaching out to these spirits is always different, but I follow basic principles. I always begin with a representation of the spirit, a small offering and a candle. The representation can be anything, from a statue to a printed picture or even just their name on some paper. The offering is in most cases water until the spirit makes other wants known to me, but when a spirit doesn’t take water I offer food or tobacco instead. The candle is something I was taught helps to enhance spirit communication, carrying messages between the worlds. It is helpful to research about whoever you are attempting to communicate with, and if possible you should speak to other practitioners who work with the same Spirit. Often times, this is someone-you-know’s father or grandmother. From here, you should sit with whatever entity you are contacting, allowing yourself to experience a personal relationship with them. I will share individual experiences of what each spirit has been like in practice for me, or people I know, but for beginning this is a good basic way to start out.

by the moon: notes on ancestral healing

today i sit here remembering how i had planned ten years ago to run away.

i had packed a small bag with memories and insults, mockeries that were barely fitting in and i had flung it over my shoulders.

in the dark of the night, wearing the tattered cloak of my aspirations i had dared to step outside into the moonlight.

there was the sound of my beating heart, at the verge of exploding, and the silence of the nocturnal sky.

the mother moon had stirred in her slumber and casted a gentle glow on me.

“where are you going, dear one?” she had inquired with the utmost concern.

“i’m running away,” i had replied with a fervour in my tone.

she merely nodded, lighting the rest of the path for me.

“i’ve seen many young girls attempt it,” she said, accompanying me in my tread.

pure glee from within encased my being. i must be on the right path, i concluded.

“but i’ve never seen them quite succeed,” she emphasised.

the aching had returned in full force.

“why?” oh how i had asked with desperation as the last strand of hope was also slipping from my fingers.

“they run away from their homes, their lives and their families, thinking they’d finally set them free. they rejoice that their shackles have left their bruised wrists and ankles finally.”

i merely noded and listened to her attentively.

“but they forget that they have no means to run away from the poison that’s injected in their bloodstream through the first sip of their mother’s milk.”

i hold my breath and try to remember the taste of it. quite bitter-sweet, now that i think about it.

“it’s not your fault,” she reassured me.

“the suffering is but a family heirloom. and i’m afraid there’s no way to run from it, no matter the corner you pick.”

“then what must i do to rid myself of this?”

“it is but a curse that the women before you refused to feel. no, they weren’t given the time and space to make friends with it. so they gift it to their daughters & granddaughters, hoping that somehow they will transcend this generational misery.”

tears welled in my eyes and my courage waned. yet, she spoke with greater tenderness, that all-knowing being.

“if you truly wish to survive through this, then let it be felt and consume you for the years that it wishes to feed off of you. cry and heave, walk and persist. know it deeply, acknowledge it. and one day you shall depart from it.”

“remember that a curse can be broken if there is will. thank the suffering for protecting you and your lineage and declare that with you, it shall leave and free your family.”

i realised the ancient one had bestowed upon me a piece of information that must be heeded. i thanked her and retreated.

today, i remind myself that i must be brave for i am bound to be liberated. but not without befriending the anger, pain and the grudges. i must honor them and let them course through me.

for the centuries of the women in my family who weren’t allowed to lament their woes. so they had lovingly offered it to me.
