i can't quite put into words what exactly izaya has meant to me over the past 8 years. one, it sounds really corny and i go off into at least 30 different tangents about all the little things that make him so endearing to me, but also i just dont really know how to sound eloquent and stuff. that being said, a lot of the person i am today is (for better or for worse) thanks to izaya, so i think if i leave it at that you can at least get it a little bit. ^_^

i was really excited to set this year's display up. i changed the room i used this time, since i got a new desk, and it was...kind of a challenge at first, but after moving around a bunch of furniture and whatnot, i made it work...!

i had to forego putting up a few other things... namely the rest of my bromides and postcards, but also all my shikishi. i need to invest in some way to display them... i also had two(!!) dakimakura... i had to leave out this year. </3 and the cardboard cutout i made when i was 16. 😭

as usual, i have a lot of stuff to say about this entire thing and the stuff around it, so i... will leave my rambling under the cut. (^□^)

my god putting this thing together was hell. i said 'challenge' earlier no this shit was like a fucking war omfg. the clear files kept falling i was miserable and praying to god (im not even religious). and then i had to tape behind the big izaya balloon poster cause it's covering my doorway and it kept getting pulled back to the door...? and it looked stupid. 🤦‍♂️ i wasn't originally gonna put the tables in here either. i really wanted to be able to fit the bed sheets on the walls. but i couldn't... and i needed more room to put the pillows and stuff, so it ended up working out perfectly.

(the only reason i didn't want to use tables was cause i didn't want something covering up izaya's sexy exposed feet in the china poster... 😟)

i was (finally) gonna get a cake this year, but after having the stress of two exams back to back this week and exams next week, i...was too exhausted lol. hopefully next year i won't have an awful overnight job or school making me miserable. (as if i'm not still gonna be a student next year☠)

on a (slightly) unrelated note, yesterday (may 3) was the 19th birthday of my favorite album ever from my favorite band ever, fall out boy's from under the cork tree! i was so happy when i found out it's right before izaya's birthday cause fall out boy as a whole has so many izaya coded lyrics it's crazy. (btw, their debut album tttyg came out on the 6th as well...!)

Happy 4th December - No, we are not there yet

But it's a wet Monday morning and I've had a really frustrating weekend, and today, on this anniversary of maybe the biggest piece of gaylor lore, the pictures and headlines I'm seeing just tipped me over the edge into a rant.

So, on this 4th December 2023 it is 9 years to the day that the world woke up to grainy pictures and videos of Taylor Swift, the world's most famous popstar and America's ultimate good girl, allegedly kissing a woman at a 1975 concert. And the tabloids and social media went crazy over it. And not in a good way. I remember the way I felt, so very nauseated about reading words like 'lesbian affair', 'shocking' and 'fling', not just on Taylor and Karlie's behalf, but the way it made me feel about myself, too. I was brutally reminded that 'lesbian' in 2014 was still seen as a dirty word and society's default was to see sapphic relationships as something scandalous and a fall from grace, rather than something beautiful. To this day I look at this photo and can't help but feel awed by the love and intimacy that their body language exudes, but the world didn't see it that way, they were just obsessing over whether they kissed or not and how to spin that into a dirty story.

That was almost a decade ago. So, have we made progress? Is it all fixed and every queer person (especially artists and celebrities) can live authentically and freely? Well, no, of course not, as was possibly proven again this weekend by Billie Eilish, who confirmed that she is gay (more or less unplanned) in an interview. Nobody should be surprised as she was never subtle about her queerness, yet it cost her over 100,000 social media followers in just 24 hours after explicitly coming out. Being gay, especially for women, is only acceptable when mainstream society don't have to see it. Don't talk about it and God forbid, don't kiss in public. Never mind that straight people do it all the time. The very same tabloid paper that printed kissgate pictures with the word 'shocking' next to them, put Taylor on the cover two years later and described her romance with Tom Hiddleston as 'exciting' and 'sexy'. And on the very morning I see the tweet about Billie, I find this message in my inbox:

And I was of course expecting Taylor to show up at another football game, but to see her looking somber in a Carol-esque red fur coat, while her partner and all her friends are having a lovely time in LA... it just makes me angry today. Yes, maybe we've made progress in same ways, but we are still so far from where we need to be for everyone to be able to come out without repercussion. In a better world, Taylor would have been in a gorgeous dress next to her wife, rather than sitting next to the girl who would have bullied us in High School.

(And btw, not only was Rebel Wilson blackmailed into coming out by the Sydney Morning Herold, she has lost thousands of followers and has pretty much focused on film making rather than acting since coming out. Maybe this was always her plan, but also, maybe not. Interesting, that film making is also seemingly becoming Taylor's second career leg...)

So, anon who sent me the question above, take this as my answer. Why is the most famous popstar in the world not out in 2023? Most likely because it would cost her so much of what she's worked hard for over the last 17 years. Not withstanding that the answer may also be 🛴 and what he did in 2019 that prevented her from coming out then, the world is just not a very good place for a celebrity to be anything other than straight, white and cisgender. That said, I am sorry, but I disagree with your statement. It is fine if you dislike the series and even if you criticize it, but as for me, I think the writing is rather strong.

Here are some thoughts, which aren't really directed at you, but rather are born by me seeing a tendency going around where it is somehow "cool" to outloud state RWBY is badly written. I even saw people like... "apologizing" because they enjoy the series. Newsflash...RWBY is good.

RWBY is a series with a writing that goes from decent to very good depending on the moment. I would give it from 7 to 8.5 or even 9 in some scenes. More importantly, it is a story the writers are clearly enjoying writing, as for now. This is why I like watching it. It is genuine, upfront in what it wants to say and it takes risks. Ironically, a series with limited resources shows much more freedom in execution than many other stories, which are economically backed up.

I would also add people keep talking about good writing, but never really elaborate on it... And like, trust me, I do think there is good writing and bad writing. The problem is that people just take examples of "well written series" and decide a series written differently must be bad. This isn't really the case.

First of all, let's focus only on a specific type of story, which is the kind most modern movies, books and series are. This type of story is built on 3 (4) factors:

Plot

Characters

Themes

(Worldbuilding)

I would say the first 3 are more important usually, but there are some stories where the worldbuilding is so strong it becomes its own selling point.

Now, a good story is usually strong in all these departments. The perfect story is top notch in all 3 (4). That is because a good plot usually lets you develop the characters better, which in turns helps exploring the theme.

However, here comes the amazing truth... even the most incredible stories. Even the masterpieces loved by everybody... even them... end up choosing only 1 or 2 of these aspects and sacrifice a little bit of the 3rd (and 4th) one.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster? Its focus is themes. He chooses to go all out on this department, which is why the story is so powerful and resonates so much with people. Still, to do so, he chooses to sacrifice some parts of the plot to the point... some mysteries are not really solved. Some people may be annoyed by it, but I would not call it a flaw. It is a choice. Leaving some things open enriches the themes.

Death Note? If the story has to choose between characters, themes and plot, it goes for plot. This is why despite having so many well liked characters, it is difficult to think of outstanding character arcs in it. The same goes for the themes, which are only touched superficially. This is why btw Death Note is not a fave of mine, really.

Now obviously, many examples can be done and we could discuss forever on some because there is always always always a subjective component. What I am trying to say is... there are different ways to write a story. Not all people would like the same. Luckily, we have tons of stories.

Back to RWBY. I would say RWBY shines when it comes to themes. Characters and plot are good and interesting, but what keeps the story together, despite it playing so much with genre is that it has a very strong thematic core. You can't invent it or fake it btw. See, Death Note's author tries to do it in later works (Platinum End cough cough), but fails. At the same time, there is another department RWBY is top notch and that is symbolism. RWBY has a very rich symbolic system. Again... surely there are coincidences, but like this is a little bit too much...imho.

Now, does it mean, the writers came up with all the patterns I and others find? Probably not, but here is the thing... writing has an unconscious component. If you go earnestly at it, you are bound to unconsciously create patterns. A good writer is able to recognize them (either consciously or unconciously) and to capitalize on them. So far, I think CRWBY has capitalized on the patterns they created. I also think it is clear they are very good at researching and at playing with different sources by going deep into them. Again, you can't come up with the Ever After if you have not read and even studied Alice in Wonderland. It is just impossible. You would end up with a shallow and uninteresting copy cat. The Ever After isn't that because it is used to explore themes, characters and lore in an interesting way. Hence... ladies and gentlemen... it is a fruit of... good writing.

But really, since people are not commenting on it... I would like to point out that in 5 episodes of less than 20 minutes, they have managed to introduce a whole world, with its own lore, set of characters and main story (Alyx's) and to tie it to the protagonists' predicament in a way that hits really hard thematically and psychologically... To do that you need exceptionally thight writing... it is not that simple to do...

Your misogyny mega video is a cathartic relief because it feels like I’m not insane for noticing these things. Does it ever feel like fandom just subtly brainwashes you into thinking that oh this female character we constantly ignore really isn’t interesting after all, you’re delusional for finding them underrated, there is no double standard with this male side character who actually is superior.

I'm glad! And yeah, I tried my best to keep the framing not as "these characters suck" but "these characters were failed" because that's what the framing should be. I feel like whenever a female character is poorly done, people tend to take it out on the character themselves. Rey is I think the most common example of this (happy may the 4th btw) because people frikkin hate her just because the writers didn't care enough about her to follow through on some of her writing, and the anger is almost always pointed at the character and not the writers, which I find weird. But I also see it a lot with Nya ad some of the other ninjago females. There are interesting characters in there just waiting to break out! There are reasons to like these guys!

Chris holds the stuffed animal in front of his face and speaks in his funny voice.

“Ooh! Bed time!” The girl laughs at his antics and grabs the stuffed animal from his hands, placing her hand on his face and pushing him back.

“Hey!” Chris giggles.

“You know the drill, no grabbing Mr. fuzzy wrinkles.”

“That’s his name?!” He shakes his head in a joking manner.

“That’s goofy as hell.”

“You were the one who named him!” The girl laughs at the memory of Chris naming the unicorn back in 4th grade.

“I- ! No I didn't!” Chris denies it completely and laughs with his best friend.

“Yes! Yes you did! Ask matt!” She flings her head back as she laughs even more at Chris’ face and his denial.“I am not asking shit! I did NOT name that!” He laughs in disbelief before snatching the unicorn out of her hand.

“Hey!” She shouts at Chris as gets off her bed and walks around the room, taunting his best friend by holding the stuffed animal above his head.

“Get back here!” She gets off her bed and chases after him, eventually tackling him down onto her bed.

I sigh as I hear the triplets’ front door close and the voices of Chris and Vera giggling as they walk up the stairs.

Matt turns his head to me with a sympathetic look. I just shake my head.

“How’d date night go?” Matt speaks as he gets up from the couch and walks into the kitchen, grabbing a soda.

“Great! We went to the beach after dinner.” Chris laughs out.

“Why are you two wet?!” Nick comes down the stairs with his headphones and his glasses on, carrying the plate he brought up earlier when me and Matt made dinner.

“Are you deaf? He just said they went to the beach.” 

“Well, I had my headphones on fucknuts.” Nick argues back with Matt as he sets his plate in the sink and grabs his 5th Dr.Pepper from the fridge. 

“Whatever.” Matt rolls his eyes and walks back to the living room, sitting in his spot next to me, draping his arm over my shoulder.

I steal a glance at Chris and Vera one last time as they walk to Chris’s room, me and Chris meeting eyes for a split second before he disappears down the stairs.

“It’ll be alright. I know it kills you to see them together.” Matt rubs my shoulder in sympathy.

I shake my head softly and look down at my lap.

“It’s fine.”

!3rd POV!

“This is Vera!” Chris grins widely as he introduces his girlfriend to his brothers and best friend.

He feels bad for Vera, mainly because he’s basically using her to get over his massive crush on his best friend.

“Nice to meet you all. Chris is always talking about the three of you.” Vera chuckles and reaches her hand out to shake, but Matt and Nick just hug her instead, surprising her slightly. She brushes off the surprise as the triplets best friend reaches her own hand out, her face expressionless other than the obviously fake smile on her lips, one only Matt knows is fake, and shakes Vera’s.

Matt senses the awkwardness and tension rising so he speaks up.

“How long have you known Chris?” Matt moves to stand in front of his best friend, knowing she’s a little distraught by the sight of Chris with his girlfriend.

“About 5 months. We started talking in May and it just went from there.” Vera chuckles and grabs Chris’s hand, squeezing affectionately.

The triplet’s best friend clears her throat and speaks.

“Well, it was nice to meet you Vera, but I have to go. My mom.. She uh…she… wants me home, I’ve been over here for a week.” She said the first excuse that came to mind, hoping it sounded believable.

Chris’ face drops slightly, upset that his best friend, and long time crush, is leaving, not even 5 minutes after meeting his girlfriend. 

“Oh, uh.. Okay.” Chris tries to mask his sadness with the love he has for Vera, which isn’t real, but should be.

“You sure?” Nick turns to her as she walks down the hall to Matt’s room to grab her bag.

She just nods as she opens the door to his room; “Yeah, I don’t want to be in your guys’ hair for too long.” That was the last thing the guys heard before she disappeared behind the walls of Matt’s room.

In truth, she was heartbroken. She’s always had a crush on Chris, for as long as she could remember. 

She shuts Matt’s door behind her and sinks down to the floor, covering her face as she tries to fight back the tears stinging her eyes.

She hears her phone, which is on Matt’s bed, go off.Standing up, she walks to it and sniffles before sitting on the bed and grabbing it.

Ratty matty: are you ok? Me: idk matt, am i? Ratty matty: sorry

She locks her phone and tosses it on the bed before standing up and shoving her clothes in her bag, whilst wiping whatever tears fell from her eyes.

Outside in the kitchen, she can hear them all talking, occasionally laughing. 

Why can’t I just be happy for him?

!3rd POV!

Chris kisses his girlfriend once more before she’s out the door.

Oddly enough, his best friend had stuck around, and wasn’t glued to Matt’s side.

He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t jealous with how much she hangs out with Matt, but he can’t worry about that, he has a girlfriend.

Granted his girlfriend is basically a rebound to get his crush off his mind, but it’s failing. Miserably.

“You alright?” He cocks a brow at his best friend as he plops on the couch next to her.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” He’s known her long enough to know that’s bullshit. She’s not fine.

His face softens slightly, “You sure?”

“Yeah, just leave it alone.” She shakes her head, never tearing her eyes from her phone, playing some game on it.

“If you insist.” He shrugs and gets up from the couch, walking into the kitchen, and opening the fridge.

“Soda?” He looks over his shoulder to her, meeting her eyes for a second before she looks away, nodding.

“Yeah, please and thank you.” He nods and grabs two pepsi’s before walking back to the living room, placing the other pepsi in her open hand.

She sets her phone in her lap to open her pepsi.

They sit in silence, other than the sound of their phones, for as long as it takes for Chris to finish a pepsi. Even after that, it’s silent. 

The house dimly lit and Matt and Nick either in their rooms or just somewhere, but they couldn’t care.

And at this moment, things felt normal.

Just sitting there, in silence. With each other. Like they used to do.

They might be destined as lovers in another universe, but not this one. 

And that’s the worst part, for both of them.

1: What is a scene that really got to you?

A LOT OF THEM. a Lot of them. however I’m gonna talk about Tome because she really got to me especially when reading the Reigen manga!! I don’t have any diagnoses btw. that may or may not be relevant

As someone who grew up with niche interests that I was Really, REALLY into. Tome’s character kinda hit hard. In elementary school I had a huge thing about dragons, making up biology for them and Never. Ever shutting up about them. Even going into 4th grade I would be irrationally upset and sometimes even melt down when someone told me that dragons aren’t real (even though I knew at the time that. well. they arent). Tomes relationship with aliens seems to be a long-term interest like this, especially if you consider the telepathy club has known each other for a good while (minus Saruta who’s a 1st year) .

When someone doesn’t share that same passion, or even understand that passion, it’s Heavily disheartening. Occasionally throughout middle school I’d have extreme passions for certain things (especially as I entered the realm of fandoms) that my friends didn’t share (NO shade to them, it just wasn’t their main interests at the time! some of them had their own interests they were super into as well, love y’all if you’re reading this <3) and sometimes I’d feel as though they were going along with it just to make me happy (ring a bell? think of the alien arc).

Reigen manga however enters a more positive side to it. Tome initially believes her interests are something to keep to herself and eventually ditch as she grew older, then later accepts that she’s not the only one with “silly” interests that run their lives. Here’s where I shoutout the friends I grew up with again!!!! Tome’s growth really reflects my own in this area, especially as I opened to others interests more. I’ve learned about a ton of things I wouldn’t have otherwise because of my buddies and I now feel free to dump my own information on them!!
