I just watched your giant video essay on ninjago and women (and LOVED it) and I have to say your "Zane is treated like a female character by the narrative and this is why many women in the fandom gravitate to him" is the most galaxy brain take I've ever seen

I am glad! It is no more than a theory, I do not have much evidence. Not to mention there are a LOT of other contributing factors. Zane is the most feminine of the first four (and maybe even the core six?), the kindest, he's certainly the least threatening (in a feeling safe alone with men kind of way), he has the healthiest relationship, has a whole arc about being/feeling othered. So, it's not to say he isn't already appealing to female audience members, but I do think the narrative cues are another contributing factor to add onto the pile.

Ngl ur video abt how ninjagos female cast is written kinda has me tempted to write smthn similar but like going into how dirty the female cast gets done by the sets? Like fr nya has ONLY 5 NINJA VEHICLES (not counting her samurai x vehicles) to her name over the over a decade ninjago has lasted and only 1 of them is a full set and not either a side build a small pack in build with a book or a 2 pack with another ninja it's....kind of insane

I know absolutely nothing about the sets, but I would assume that the gender divide is WAY larger there than in the show- because it's way more tied to your demo of 10 year old boys which don't want the girl set. It's one thing to bend gender within the content and story of a multi episode season, but it's another to do it in the sets which are ALL marketing.

You should write that up, cuz I would certainly read it.

Your misogyny mega video is a cathartic relief because it feels like I’m not insane for noticing these things. Does it ever feel like fandom just subtly brainwashes you into thinking that oh this female character we constantly ignore really isn’t interesting after all, you’re delusional for finding them underrated, there is no double standard with this male side character who actually is superior.

I'm glad! And yeah, I tried my best to keep the framing not as "these characters suck" but "these characters were failed" because that's what the framing should be. I feel like whenever a female character is poorly done, people tend to take it out on the character themselves. Rey is I think the most common example of this (happy may the 4th btw) because people frikkin hate her just because the writers didn't care enough about her to follow through on some of her writing, and the anger is almost always pointed at the character and not the writers, which I find weird. But I also see it a lot with Nya ad some of the other ninjago females. There are interesting characters in there just waiting to break out! There are reasons to like these guys!
