Do you have any good resources/references/advice for drawing (late republican) Roman clothing? I want to draw a couple of historical figures but thinking about drawing a toga makes me feel like 😖😖😖...
-Costumes of the Greeks and Romans, Thomas Hope
-Greek and Roman Fashions, Tom Tierney
-The World of Roman Costume, ed. Judith Lynn Sebesta and Larissa Bonfante.
-Decorative Symbols and motifs for Artists and Craftsmen/Decorative Patterns of the Ancient World, Dover Publications
-photos & videos from reenactors and reenactment events
-build a screenshot reference library from movies and shows that have costume designs you like, that kind of thing. grab a blanket and wrap yourself up in it toga style and take a photo if you need a specific angle. etc. museums usually have a lot of their galleries online, and places like the met often shoot statues from multiple sides.

In terms of Wenclair nicknames, I believe in ‘Enid using Willa’ supremacy and φεγγάρι μου (‘my moon’ in Greek) is especially beloved to me, but I also love little shit Enid who calls Wednesday any day of the week EXCEPT Wednesday (“Hey, Monday!” “What do you think about this Sabbath?” “Oh thank god you’re here Friday”) and it annoys her favorite murder goth to NO END but slowly said murder goth becomes endeared by her roomate’s antics as feelings start to tumble and bloom away. Besides ‘my moon’, I can also see her calling Wednesday ‘silly raven’ in Greek.
Meanwhile, Wednesday has this wholeass evolution from shit like “mutt” to way softer nicknames because Gomezifcation™️ is a powerful thing. She starts to pine and internally call Enid her Alectrona (a greek goddness of the Sun, known for sunrise or ‘waking from slumber’, a perfect combo of how Enid brings light to Wednesday as well as her inner wolf finally waking up), but slowly she starts using it out loud along with “mi sol” (‘my sun’, Spanish), “mon petit chiot” (‘my little pup’, French), and “la mia vita” (‘my life’, Italian). Enid melts everytime without fail and stutters in Greek and honestly? Who could blame her when Wednesday has that passionately lovestruck shine in her eyes as adoration drips from devout lips.

I am not going to shut up about the Valhalla DLC for the next four days, so here's a wild theory I was discussing with the discord group last night:
What if... and this is a giant fucking IF, the final boss of this DLC is Greek Era Kratos? Hear me out, the description for this little "expansion" says that this is a deeply personal journey for Kratos, and the appearance of the cyclops gives me a sneaking suspicion that it's not going to be the only Greek Era enemy we'll be facing. Plus the whole "master thyself" thing? What better way for Kratos to overcome his demons than to have him fight himself?
Days that pass like sand,
blowing idly by
in the summer wind
he dreams of snakes,
long-fanged, like vexed bees,
stinging at his scalp
“Purify yourself,”
but he has not sinned
…he does not protest
The river is green-blue. Alive. He feels its heart beating beneath the slick rock of its banks.
Old river. Gorgeous thing. Bent into the shape of a shepherd’s crook, flowing but tame
A nursery for fresh-born nymphs too young to stand the ocean’s tide-pulls
or maybe a reprieve from rough Summer’s overbearing heat
He slips his robe from his shoulders. Unbinds the curls of his hair.
There is almost regret in his heart. Almost tragedy. Almost pain.
Each ritual bath is a spectre of the first, blood sinking deep into his flesh,
poison that will never stop burning. He empties his lungs of air and steps
Light-footed, like air
down the forest path
she goes a-walking
she’s dreamt of violets
since summer’s first dawn
a maiden possess’d
“Purify yourself,”
that’s what father said
...This is how they meet
(Gold
like sun slicing through the clouds
like full-grown barley
begging to be picked
She’s gold and slim and gorgeous
bathing in the river
The nymph is new
like speckled flowers blooming
on a rose bush
she calls to be admired
and Evadne cannot resist her allure)
you might not think it’s hard to be a soc fan artist on tumblr, but let me tell you about the time I called someone out for drawing inej with light skin, so they blocked me and then wrote a long post about me that I couldn’t see, along with colour samples taken from my art as examples of how inej is “too dark” in them, and then they end the post with “I’m disappointed in you” 💀
Got this copy of The History of Herodotus (George Rawlinson translation) today that I thought I’d share (plus pics of a greek version at the end of this post)! This one was printed in the 1950’s but they started publishing it in 1928.
I tried to open it carefully but the binding immediately cracked. I got it from our local used bookstore for 10$ so I’m not too upset but I’m ordering some book binding glue to see if I can’t fix it lmao
Bonus:
(I don’t know anything else about this copy, and the store owner hadn’t put researched it for sale yet—he thought it might be a rare edition though. He let me see it when he saw what I was buying though so props to him.)
