With the DC crossover announced and the images released, I figured that since most of the sonic cast are technically teens(??) it would be cool to see them as the teen heroes, too!! Here's Sonic as Impulse, Knuckles as Superboy, Amy as Wonder Girl, Tails as Robin, and Shadow as the blue Black Beetle!

lookijg back on my art progress on this blog in reverse is honestly DISGUSTING what was I DOING back then. so weird seeing the changes over time how did I get better at rendering so fast last year how did I go from everything looking like its covered in vaseline in April-June to having actual Texture and subsurface scattering and ambient light and shadows just a couple months later.

Dont get me started on 2023 I was flopping around so bad from transitioning from using FireAlpaca as my primary program to csp (I still miss the simplicity of FA but oh my god I needed the more expansive brush engine so bad. Though I definitely prefer a lot of FireAlpaca’s features over their counterparts/equivalents in clip studio) <- has been happily married to FireAlpaca for almost 8 years

Really? I find them the easiest. If anything, I struggle with Starline, the Babylon Rogues, Vector, Espio, Metal Sonic, and Omega. I don't know why but I just can't nail down robot designs or uniquely shaped muzzles.

my problem is that I like my ships best if they maintain as much of their canon personalities as possible.

If they bicker or fight or are prickly in canon, I'm okay with them doing that as a ship, too! It feels natural!

With sonadow, I hadn't shipped them in a while because I hated how Shadow's personality had become from the 2010s until like. Sonic Prime. Shadow ISN'T a bully!!! He fights AGAINST bullies. He can get competitive but usually only with Sonic. He's serious, he doesn't quite get small talk or some sayings, and his resting face LOOKS PISSED but he's just standing there.

I loved Sonic Boom as an AU, but when Shadow's personality became that in the main continuity, I was devastated. It felt like the executives took a character so beloved by us shy people, looked at his superficial design and went "Yeah this guy is an edgy dickhead"

We didn't call him edgy because of his design or attitude, we called him that because his narrative was SO MUCH DARKER than Sonic's or anyone else's. But that became the norm, everything became about Shadow being an edgelord asshole who threatens people and calls them weak and pathetic. He went from some guy who was dedicated to saving the world and keeping the peace to some jerkoff who'd tell people to kys all the time. And I was so, so sad.

And then Sonic Prime happened. And I was afraid at first to try to open my heart to the writing, because Shadow had been done dirty SO MANY TIMES...

But suddenly, Sonic AND Shadow, AND THEIR DYNAMIC was GOT. It's like they UNDERSTOOD. I'm still not a fan of the idea of Shadow not having friends, but it feels more like he doesn't have friends because he's afraid of that vulnerability RATHER THAN because he's being written as a bully.

AND IT BRINGS A TEAR OF JOY TO MY EYE. My awkward baby was back, the guy who focused on the mission so hard he'd miss the finer details at times. But also, the guy who cares SO MUCH but can't express it properly for the LIFE of him.

The guy who grabs others by the hand to pull them forward, to run WITH them. Who keeps warning Sonic not to trust so blindly because he is WORRIED about not just the consequences of the big picture, but also what that will do to his friend.

Sonic being too busy being sassy and playful that he can't realize that this IS Shadow caring, it's just not as open or casual or bubbly as his other friends. Shadow can't do that; it's just not the way he is. He's more stiff, he hates attention, he'd rather be in the background, he comes across as awkward when he's trying to be cool or serious.

But he actually seems to RELAX a bit around Sonic, and they work SO WELL together. Their personalities are TOTAL OPPOSITES but they ALWAYS attract. Magnetized together.

And it feels SO GOOD to see that understood, and written GENUINELY. AFTER 15 YEARS OF SEGA GETTING IT WRONG, we're finally giving Shadow his integrity and core BACK!!!!

And I prefer seeing ship art of them that reflects this. I used to draw so much sonadow back in the day, but I just don't anymore. Maybe I can get back into it, since I'm still too picky about fanon sonadow.

But GOD does it feel GOOD to see my boys respected narratively again!!!!

Let's go!

First Row is Sonic, Werehog, Executable, Malachite, and Sonny. The reason why I'm listing all of them as a group is because they are a system, with Sonic being the host! Werehog showed up during the events of Unleashed (obviously), Executable had been around for awhile but was taken out of dormancy during the events of Forces, Malachite was formed during the events of Colors, and Sonny was formed during the events of Generations!

Now onto all of the sonic-adjacent characters (aka the other hedgehogs)!

Lord Xenophanes, also known as Lord X, is a demigod of eclipses, raised to divinity by Dark Gaia, and he is involved in my reshuffling/rewrite of Frontiers, alongside...

Fatal Error, also known just as Error or Malware, is a demigod of mistakes and programming, created completely by accident by a god OC named The Creator of Mechanics (who I need to draw a reference for). It vanished a few decades back, only to suddenly reappear alongside Lord X for unknown reasons.

Fleetway, sometimes just known as Lord of Shapes, is a god of the Body and Mind as well as Shapeshifters. He, similarly to Lord Xenophanes, Fatal Error, Curse, Mephiles, Zip, and Majin, chose a hedgehog-esque form due to the associations with Sonic, someone is seen as trustworthy and good. He, however, is morally dubious at best, and uses his forms to mess with mortals.

Uncle Chuck is essentially Sonic's father in everything but name, having raised Sonic by himself after his parents passed. You may notice that I still have versions of them listed don't worry I'll get to that. Just know that Clutch is surprisingly well connected, knowing a lot of different kinds of people from his young adult years.

Shadow needs no introduction, but I have lore about Black Arms that I might eventually talk about but also might not because explaining how I am not a fan of alien storylines is a whole ass can of worms that I don't feel like introducing. All you gotta know is that he is not an alien, but instead has like. Nightmare Creature blood in him.

Manic is a whole ass motherfucker in this AU. He's not related to Sonic or Sonia, but is instead a young adult who never was in a foster home for more than a year, if that. He currently works at the White Resort, specifically as Clutch's right hand man.

Curse is someone who prayed so hard to Lord X that he was blessed with immortality and now lives as his eternal attendant. However, he hasn't been seen in awhile, due to shenanigans that went down.

Mephiles is the god of warfare who has beef with Ignis (the revamped versions of Iblis) due to the structured manner of warfare clashing inherently with Ignis's domain of chaos. The fires (pun intended) were only flamed with the Duke of Soleanna's inference but were managed to be calmed by Solaris's interference in the form of Elise and Jet.

Zip is the demigod of insanity who is known for her manic mannerisms and chaotic following of Fleetway's orders. It normally stays out of the limelight and prefers just following Fleetway around like a lost puppy.

Shard, also known as Metal Sonic 2.0, is an extremely advanced Metal Sonic who advanced so far that he has far exceeded his original programming and has become his own being. Is a devout follower of Eggman, but there are seeds of doubt planted in his head due to his counterpart...

Quicksilver, also known as Metal Silver, is a scrapped Metal Silver who was left to rot on Scrapnik Isle after it wasn't a successful copy. He is a people pleaser and follows Mercury around, caring probably too much about he and everyone else views him.

Scourge, as I have previously talked a bit about, is one of three Avatars who ended up helping with the Forces situation, with all three of them being prototyped experiments of attempting to get the Phantom Ruby to fuse with him, with his side effect being the purple colored stripes on him.

Sonia, as mentioned in Manic's section, is not related to Sonic or Manic, and is instead from a very rich family where she's Daddy's little princess. But, instead of being very bratty, she's extremely air-headed and gullible, not understanding a lot of class-based things. Every winter, she goes to stay at her practical uncle, Clutch's, resort, but no one seems to bother her, despite some shady figures following her...

Hydraulic, also known as Metal Sonic 1.0, is a bit of an outdated model compared to Shard, but realized that Eggman Enterprises was just...not where it wanted to be, so it ended up turning itself in, before being broken out by a certain platypus in a thought out revenge plan.

Majin, also known as Time Eater, is god of...well, do I need to say? It is usually very calm, very level headed, very slow to anger...but even it has its limits. And one platypus with a god complex is really trying his patience.

Alina is...technically not the original Alina, but instead a robotic counterpart made as an attempt to try to "revive" her without actual necromancy. And who was the one who made her? She doesn't remember much, but she remembers it being a man with a kindly face wearing green overalls...

Mercury, also known as Metal Shadow, is a failed Metal Shadow who, like Quicksilver, was abandoned on Scrapnik for not being a successful clone of Shadow. It is very quiet and brooding, rarely talking unless its services are needed. He both is annoyed and finds a sense of comfort in Quicksilver.

Amy is an extremely cheerful and optimistic girl who has an awful case of faceblindness and is part of the reason that this whole chart was even made. She's very energetic and helpful, but to the point where she'll stretch herself thin in an attempt to make everyone happy, even at the expense of her own.

Silver is, to put it bluntly, an extremely sad and depressed young man who for the longest time was plagued with visions he didn't understand and that no one was willing to explain to him. Hailing from the Lunar Kingdom, he has a deep (unwilling) connection to Mephiles, and is seen as both his prophet and priest, even if he never wanted to be that in the first place.

And, finally, we have Jules who, similarly to Alina, is just an attempt to "revive" him by building a robotic counterpart. And, similarly, Jules doesn't remember much about who created him, only having vague memories of hushed words and the glint of blue glasses.

And that's all of them!!

don't mind me, just gonna gush about my favorite things from the sonic movie asd;kfjask spoilers included, so i'm gonna post under a read more

first off, holy shit the cgi characters. this is the best any sonic character has ever looked in any medium. shadow especially; like that one scene of him walking in the rain? the way his fur was ruffled and wet, and the way the rain ran off him? it was incredible.

the whole movie's color pallet was wonderful; i especially loved the nighttime lighting in the tokyo scenes!

the shot compositions. oh my god. so many incredible shots (super sonic and super shadow in those ancient ruins at sunset? shadow running on water in the opening? that shot alone totally altered my brain chemistry)

REFERENCES! the chao in space poster in one background. biolizard in the movie maria and shadow were watching. LIVE AND LEARN? god i was geeking out so hard

all in all, i really enjoyed my time! i do have some tiny issues with some things; like the pacing felt a bit weird, and there were some things i was a little put off about (like maria not being sick), but those are so insignificant compared to the fun i had. plus, it's following the movie's canon, not the games; and i think it works for what it's trying to do.

i give it a solid 8.5/10.

"It's still hard for me to believe that I have gotten away from him. Understanding this new body of mine is trickier than the one my last host had. Wonder if he's doing okay." 'Sonic' the Werehog the Dark Gaia Incarnate.

Holy shit did this drawing had so many interruptions that I won't be surprised if it tied up with Skully. Finally managed to finish the main design update for Dark Gaia Incarnate Sonic. I still have to do the night version.

The short summary of this fellow is that he's the Dark Gaia which gave Sonic his werehog form. Due to being stuck inside the hedgehog hero for so long, the Werehog gained sentience and couldn't fully be reincorporated into his progenitor. The dark god essentially tortures him in an attempt to turn the newly aware being back to a mindless state. Sadly for Dark Gaia, the Werehog escapes through someone's summoning attempt and snatches some more of his power in the process.

His personality is similar to Sonic but more violently protective. This Werehog isn't afraid to maim someone and rarely gives second chances to aggressors. I do have ideas for not only him but another Sonic associated character.

Something fairly instrumental to Mecha Sonic Mk 2’s design which I don’t see much art address (and honestly, I’ve been struggling to get it working in my own) is what I like to call “vague space.”

Why is this character so hard to draw? Take a close look at the torso in particular.

You cannot actually make out what piece or part is connecting Mecha’s head or arms to his “body.” In fact, on the original sprite, it’s ALL black. There’s no “torso piece” besides the chestplate which looks almost “seperate” from whatever is holding it there.

This is “vauge space,” and it’s where all of Mecha 2’s mysterious machinery hides.

Mecha Sonic’s actual inner workings are the single most confusing thing about him. The central aspect of his mechanics, however, is that he can “open” himself to show off his eye. (This is metal as hell, by the way, some more Springtrap-ass art of this in existence would be nice)

How in god’s name he actually accomplishes this, though, is unknowable. Yet, when he does “open his eye,” you can see mechanical parts that are normally not visible, those blue bars and beams surrounding his eye.

If it helps, there’s also this Scrapnik Island panel of Sonic kicking Mecha’s head, where it almost looks like it’s bending back on a hinge joint; you can even see the hole at the bottom of his chin where the eye would slide past.

This “unknowability” of his mechanics are what the vague space addresses. We don’t quite know how it works, so having it there means there’s room for interpretation, that he can “believably” pull the eye move.

Every area of complete darkness on the sprite technically counts, but here’s the specific area which I’m referring to highlighted.

Hopefully this helps with understanding how everything about Mecha Mk 2 connects. It took me quite a while to consciously “get” this.

How exactly is he splashing Cream right now, what is causing the water to splash? Is he fucking farting so hard it's kicking up the water or something?

This would make sense if his TAILS WERE SPINNING, but I honestly and sincerely am starting to think the show doesn't actually know Tails can do that.

General thoughts on interpretations that are opposing your own preferences in a media you enjoy? This could be fan head cannons, art style or just official works.

i made chaos 0 gay. with regard to stuff that doesn't harm discussions or gets in the way of criticisms, let people interpret things as horrendously ooc as they like, and draw in as stupid a style as they like. if too many fans misinterpret or misrepresent a work without apparent malice, then that's just an unfortunate act of god that the writer/artist/creator didn't account for.

it's only an issue if it begins to overcentralize discussions or makes people oddly hostile to each other for disagreeing. The problem is that discussing fandom stuff on social media is horrendous and difficult unless everyone is agreeing something is worthy of praise or dunking. This is despite it being easier than ever to hear every kind of take imaginable, like what omegaverse headcanons people have for sherlock or whatever else. It's easy to hear people spit takes, but it's difficult to meaningfully engage with takes on the internet

that's what makes opposing interpretations that gain noticeable traction with an air of hostility hard to engage with, because ideally i want to understand! ideally, even if I might not agree with other interpretations that oppose my own, I want to engage with opposing viewpoints on how to interpret different characters, but I can't enjoy that if it's the equivalent of running across no man's land in a trench war and asking the soldiers on the other side if they want to call a truce. More concretely, I'd love to discuss ways in which something like archie sonic appeals or fails to appeal to different people, but if people on twitter and youtube and reddit keep talking about these things as all or nothing, there's no way to comfortably do that without it feeling like just talking to a wall.

Sol Dimension Fire in my Sonic-verse

I did some worldbuilding for my Sonic-verse! >:) In the Sol Dimension, fire isn't as simple as it is in the main dimension. It has a history as well as other forms it can take, each with their own special capabilities and potential drawbacks. So let's get into this!

The Goddess and the Origin of Fire

In the Sol Dimension, they have a central goddess. She's the goddess of the sun and her name is Amaterasu. (Yes, I took that directly from Japanese mythology. The name just felt like it fit best! But to be clear, my Amaterasu and Japanese mythology Amaterasu are not the same person.) Amaterasu and by extension the sun itself is the source of all fire. Way back in the long long LONG ago, she gifted a special few with the power to control fire. These original fire wielders passed their ability down through the generations. Nowadays, fire powers are fairly common in the Sol Dimension. However, this genetic inheritance is NOT how characters like Blaze and my OC Blake got their fire.

It should also be noted that Amaterasu is the one who created the Sol Emeralds. They're essentially vessels for her power. Across time, Amaterasu chooses Guardians to protect the emeralds and ensure their power isn't abused. Ordinary people can use the Sol Emeralds as mega power sources, but only Guardians can use their full potential. Guardians basically become a god themselves while using them. That's what Blaze's Burning form is.

The Chosen of Amaterasu (Origin of Blaze and Blake's Fire)

Blaze and Blake didn't inherit their fire genetically like most do. They're special cases, resulting in them being what is called "Chosen of Amaterasu."

For Blaze, she was chosen from before her birth to be the Guardian of the Sol Emeralds. Because of this, she was gifted with fire from the Sol Emeralds. (So essentially directly from the goddess herself.) Since Blaze's fire came from the source, she has the ability to access not only regular fire, but several special, extra forms of fire! But more on that in a bit.

For Blake, he was born on the Summer Solstice, when the sun is at its most powerful. This resulted in Blake also gaining fire as if he was gifted it by the Goddess herself. However, this is known as "stealing" fire from Amaterasu and is illegal throughout most of the Sol Dimension. Regardless, this means that Blake has access to all the same extra forms of fire that Blaze has!

Fire and its Extra Forms

There are five types of fire. The first kind is your basic fire. It's exactly what you expect. It's the kind you can create with a match. It's the kind the majority of fire wielders in the Sol Dimension can control. Fire wielders cannot burn themselves with this kind of fire no matter how hard they try. They are naturally immune to it. All forms of fire after this are exclusive to Amaterasu's Chosen (except for very rare and specific circumstances).

Next is Blue Fire. Blue Fire is essentially the next level up of fire. It's much hotter than normal fire and much harder to control. There's a very real possibility the wielder could accidentally burn themselves with this fire. (This is the fire that is to blame for Blake losing his arm as a kid.)

Then we have Black Fire. Think Blue Fire but multiply it by 1000. It's immensely dangerous and insanely hot. It chars anything it comes into contact with in milliseconds. It's almost impossible to control and it's almost guaranteed that the wielder will get burned just as bad as whatever they were targeting. Should the wielder survive this, they will fall into a coma afterwards. The length of the coma varies.

Moving away from the intensely dangerous, we have Soul Fire! This fire can only be accessed through use of the Sol Emeralds. It draws power directly from the wielder's soul and creates a very pure and almost holy fire. It is most often used to "thaw" the metaphorical ice in another person's mind or heart, heal mental fractures, or connect with another person's soul no matter where they are. (This is the kind of fire Blaze used to bring Sonic’s memories back after the Metal Virus!) Since Soul Fire draws power from the soul, it drains the wielder's life-force while it's in use. Because of this, the wielder shouldn't use Soul Fire for very long, and it takes them at minimum three days of rest to recover.

Finally, we've got Amber Fire! For lack of a better way to describe it, this is portal fire. It allows the wielder to transport them to different dimensions, timelines, or even UNIVERSES. This fire requires a Sol Emerald or an object of equal or greater power (like a Chaos Emerald) to create. The object of power stays behind when the wielder transports, meaning they must find another object of power if they want to transport again. (This is the kind of fire that Blaze uses to get to Sonic’s dimension and Blake uses to jump around universes.) It is possible to transport others with Amber Fire, but it requires the wielder to know the destination location. They can't be shooting blind.

Hi hi! I just finished binging THOAM in one go, and I’m loving the story so far!

I love the way you characterize everyone - especially Omega, which absolutely came as a surprise to me! - and the plot itself is super interesting and definitely feels like a plot I could see in the series for real. The way that everybody figured out that Sonic was, well, Sonic, especially with Any realizing it near immediately made me really happy. Even if we haven’t gone into the details of their relationships, it really speaks wonders to me about the depth of their friendship. Also, since I mentioned Amy, I just wanted to say that the outfits and way you draw her is *so* cute. I love the little freckles she seems to have, too! The Rouge-Amy team up was also something I never knew I wanted but I definitely needed. I’m absolutely loving it all.

thank you!! im very glad you enjoy my story ^_^ those thnigs are definitely also things i didnt know i needed until i did them. a lot of the stuff is actually very spontaneous stuff that just randomly happened as the story developed and i ran with it :D def still learning more about the characters as i go so i can say with pride that knuckles and tails fans will eat well next issue, when i finally figured out how to write them (and draw. god tails is so hard to draw)
