Since the fourth wall in rpf is once again being debated, I just wanted to say that to me, the most important argument for not screenshotting or taking about other people’s content or ideas from tumblr or ao3 on your unlocked twitter is that it hurts the community you’re trying to be a part of. You’re opening up people whose thoughts and gifs and words you love to a level of public scrutiny they didn’t sign up for, and that often comes with a strong potential for harassment and derision. This is more obvious when that content is locked or limited to people with a tumblr account, or not put in the public tags etc, but even when it isn’t, different platforms have very different audiences and taking something from a space that is technically public, but with a more insular audience largely full of people in fandom to something with a much wider public audience is still disregarding their choices.

And if you don’t care about people in your own community and you need a selfish reason, some people will lock things down or delete them or stop posting when it reaches a certain level of frequency. It has happened before, it will happen again, and we will lose things as a community as a result. There’s not a perfect system, and sure assholes can find things and post it themselves if they know where to look, but you can still do your part to respect the people you’re supposed to be building a community with and not contribute to that.
