About the last point:

Yes, not every detail has some big symbolic meaning. The blue curtains don’t have to represent profound melancholy or some such.

BUT. If the story is worth its salt (hence “If they aren’t you should read better books”)--if it’s mentioned that the curtains are blue, it is mentioned FOR A REASON.

There is a significance in the author’s choice to mention the colour at all. Or even to mention the curtains at all. So why?

That’s the question you should ask yourself when analysing a story or any piece of media. Not “What does this symbolise?” but “Why did the author mention it?”

AND WRITERS, I’m looking at you too!

Ask yourself the same question when editing, even when writing if you’re the type. Ask yourself “What does this contribute to the story?” And if the answer is nothing, CUT IT.

(Also note I said contribute to the story, not contribute to the plot. There’s so much more to a good story than plot.)

Basic rules for analysing fiction, an incomprehensive list jotted down in a hurry:

The protagonist isn’t always right

The protagonist isn’t always good

The protagonist isn’t always written to be relatable or likeable

The narrator isn’t always right

The narrator isn’t always good

The narrator isn’t always telling the truth

The narrator isn’t always the author

The protagonist’s moral compass, the narrator’s moral compass and the author’s moral compass are three entirely different things that only occasionally overlap

Pay attention to what characters do and not just what they say

Pay special attention when what the characters do is at odds with what they say

A lot of the time the curtains are blue for a reason. If they aren’t, you should read better books

i think it's actually very brave to fight for yourself when no one else will, to insist upon your own self worth, if only in your own actions and self-preservation, when everyone around considers you worthless or unworthy.

If no one else cares about you, you will care, if no one else loves you, you will try to show yourself love to the best of your ability, even if you don't know it, if no one else will protect you then you will fight for yourself. Keep yourself alive. No one else will and it's you're no less worthy than who you're being told to put yourself to the side for, to die for, to admit you are nothing for.

It's trauma, it's resilience, it's survival, it's fight, it's advocacy, it's perseverance, it's natural, it's difficult, and it's brave.

NO WORRIES I DON'T FIND IT RUDE!! honestly it's been a bit slow, I wanna pick up my pace again and be on that GRIND like how I was cause that felt good!! I'm also planning to delete the game on ren'py since I'm having issue with some of the coding even though I'm following the tutorial exactly as shown so I'm hoping that deleting the game(which isn't that big of a set back for me, I really only had the title screen in there so far) and then just start from scratch cause I don't know if the game file is glitching or if I'm just REALLY bad at coding(though tbf I haven't coded anything since the required coding class in high school and I wasn't even using ren'py for that) Although my plans have changed a bit, I don't plan on going to college this semester(which my dad is NOT going to like so I'm really dreading even TELLING him), rather I want to focus on getting a job(which will still take up my time as well as having to take care of everything at this place) BUT hopefully I'll be less stressed and at least have more free time(I take FOREVR to do college assignments, I'm a really slow worker, I always have been) but I'm hoping that I get a job and make money and save it up so I can GET OUUUUUUT of this place which would lower my stress and give me significantly more free time. And then I wanna do trade school, I wanna use my own money, not my dads, if I'm out of here and use my own money I don' have to worry about anyone else's expectations other then mine so that's also less stress YIPPEE! Progress is slow but tonight I wanna find some music, which thankfully I already have an artist(Peritune) that I REALLY like so I'll just be looking through more of their stuff! Now that I have most of the scenes written out it should be easier to find music and backgrounds! Anyways long story short progress has been slower than I'd like but I'm feeling that motivation kick! fun fact!! i actually had a massive vampire phase a million years ago!!! like, during the Twilight/Vampire Diaries hayday, LOL. everything i wrote back then involved vampires. fanfiction, original fiction—role-play. yeah!!! your girl here used to role-play with other people online!!! i’ve written teenage-girl-stumbles-across-sexy-bad-boy-vampire-who’s-old-enough-to-be-her-great-great-great-grandfather tropes. vampire highschools, ala Vampire Knight. Vampire Secret Societies. name a trope and i probably wrote a half-assed outline for it!!! if they had sharp pointy teeth and were driven by uncontrollable bloodlust into sucking on someone they cared about’s neck then i was there!!!

i’m kinda all vamped-out these days… i much prefer my bloodlust to come in the form like, a favourite character’s head being bludgeoned-in with a rock or something, LOL. just normal, non-blood drinking violence. 🥹🪓🫀🩸 idk if i’ll ever (seriously) write a vampire!AU for BNHA—maybe more drabbles, randomly. but to me the magic of a vampire story came with like, pairing it up with teenage girlhood (including but not limited to the connotations of the whole, blood-drinking-in-the-place-of-sex thing). and idk! it’d be hard to pull that off in a x Reader without like, flattening whichever BNHA cast member we picked for the Lead. and i write (and read!) fanfic because i’m interested in them, in their complexities and lives and the things that stretch out after canon. idk!!! now that i’ve said that, watch me pull a iida/reader/tokoyami vampire!AU outta my backside. 😭

(that’s a joke; i don’t have time. 😔 but also… 🧐 you could do some pretty interesting things with a set up like that… Dark Shadow could be like, part of Tokoyami’s vampirism?
