A third interim Scene(I'm working on the next fic I swear!) little Gabenath angst here.

There was an air of energy in the room that gave Nathalie pause. Gabriel’s atelier had been a placid pool of serene creation for so long that even the smallest eddies felt like tidal waves. The change took her back. Back to a time before Emilie’s passing, before Gabriel’s ascension, before Adrien’s birth. The crisp scent of cold Himalayan air was a ghost in her nostrils. The sticky memory of humid Amazonian jungles prickled her skin.

The man himself was surrounded by screens. He wore news, websites, articles, and searches in progress as a flickering discordant halo. His eyes flicked from one to the next faster than she could even follow. A turn of his head took his face from her and her stomach twisted. Oh how she had missed seeing him like this. His hands danced haptic keyboards. An amateurish Ladybug blog held his attention for a full minute while he scrolled down its entire length. Had he noticed her yet? No. She could leave. She should leave. Interrupting him in this state was sacrilegious. Yet- she couldn’t turn away. A much younger Nathalie shoved her from behind. One does not hide from the light long thought lost.

“Sir-” she needed an excuse, better than the business trivialities that had brought her. A forgotten collection behind him would suffice. “...you are finished with the Bourgeois collection?”

His head whipped around, those sharp eyes looked through her with lethal intensity before focusing. He turned away and her heart struggled to restart itself. “It is pointless now, Nathalie. Clearly the girl still has the only thing that matters.”

No dismissal, she dared step closer, into his aura. “If we are sure sir, will we just take it from her? She is only a child.”

His shoulders shifted in response. He glanced over his shoulder at her. It was not a patient one. “A child, Nathalie, with the power of destruction at hand.”

His gaze turned away again, switching crisply between channels on the news display. There will be more, she has known him long enough to anticipate.

“I have much in my favor, when it comes to a match up. However, the risks that come with failure are too great to balance the scales. If my haste were to be the cause of Emily’s true death-”

He choked.

That name, that woman, Emilie was a figure nearly as large in Nathalie’s life as Gabriel. She was a dear friend whose name Nathalie cursed in her sleep. She was a sweet sister whose triumphs Nathalie celebrated while praying to any God who might hear for her downfall. It wasn’t that Nathalie truly wished harm to Emilie. She just wanted all that the other woman had taken for granted.

Yet if Gabriel desired it, Nathalie would act. “Send me.”

He turned. He looked at her again. Her, not Emilie. “Pardon?”

Nathalie stepped closer, raising her chin in supplication while willing him to remember her in camo and canvas, not a suit and heels. “Send me. I have hunted dangerous prey before. I will succeed. Akumatize me, give me the peacock, send me with my bare hands if you must. I will retrieve the miraculous for you.”

His gaze lingered. She could see it in his eyes. He remembered. She had already won the most important victory. That helped ease the sting when he decreed, “No.”

“But, Sir!”

The touch of his hand on her shoulder was heavy, the grip insistent. “Nathalie, were I to lose you,  it would be the same as losing myself. I may need magic to power my plans, but I need you to give them form and purpose. Without you I am an artist without a brush. I will never risk you, not even for this.”

His gaze never leaves hers. The cacophony of information plays out around them, ignored. She is raised up and also denied a chance for more in a single stroke.

Nathalie swallowed. She had forgotten how hot Gabriel’s passions burned when alight. She still wore the scars on her heart, but time softened memory. “Yes, Sir.”

The rest piled up behind lips pressed tightly shut against the truth.

He takes back his hand, leaving only a ghost and longing, and turns back to the screens once more. “I will bide my time. We have other tools at our….”

Gabriel drew out the sound.

“Nathalie, contact Audrey Bourgeois. Ask her if she will be attending the fall review in Paris this year.”

Nathalie flipped through mental notes. “Sir, there is no fall review in Paris this year. It is in Madrid.”

Gabriel’s voice carried a chuckle, “Then she cannot possibly be attending, and she will be quite put out about it.”

Her response would be predictable. Nathalie saw the advantage, even as she weighed the cost of having that woman around Gabriel again. It never came to a good end. “Yes, Sir.  Might I suggest looking into the family life of one Sabrina Raincomprix as well?”

He didn’t look, but the softness in the ‘Hmm?’ he gave her meant she had provided him with something new.

She explained, “Another child, Miss Bourgeois’s only friend besides her connection to your son. Theirs is a… complicated relationship. It too might bear fruit.”

Gabriel turned his head back to her. The light from the screens reflected off his glasses, hiding his eyes behind the glare. “Excellent work, Nathalie. This is why I cannot risk you.”

She forced herself not to preen. “Yes, Sir.”

He turned away once more. “That will be all, Nathalie.”

Her dismissal reminded her of the true reason she had come. In the face of things it seemed petty and mundane. Without further word she turned and strode from the room. Mere business decisions she could shoulder herself. Gabriel would appreciate being allowed to focus on the things that mattered.

Appreciation was stale bread and water for her heart, but it held starvation at bay for now.

Tell me, why did you make Nathalie lesbian in your rewrite even though you love Gabenath?

Even if Nathalie wasn't a lesbian, Gabenath would've never become canon in my rewrite for three reasons:

First, as much as I love Gabenath, in my rewrite Nathalie was in love with Emilie and did everything to make her happy since she'd never love her back the same way (This is partially the reason behind why Nathalie is helping Gabriel)

Second, Gabriel slowly stops seeing Nathalie as a friend and starts seeing her more as a tool, and he's too far gone in terms of his sanity to really see her in a romantic light anyway

The third reason is how I want Gabriel and Nathalie's stories to go, and romance isn't something that would've ever been a major plot point, especially since it'd just take away from the rest of their characters

They still care about each other of course, but my version of Nathalie (regardless of being a lesbian or not) would've never saw Gabriel as anything more than someone she cares about who the love of her life was happy with

"It's alright," Nathalie voices echoes around the lair, "you still have time Gabriel. You can still win."

He looks up at her, from his postion the rose window outlines her head like she's an angel sent to rescue him from this hell.

"Do you truly believe that?"

"You know I do. I know you'd never let me die," the shadows under her eyes and a pallor of her skin are suddenly apparent where seconds earlier the light behind her had appeared to infuse her with life.

"I won't. I promise you I won't."

"I know," her eyes sparkle with affection, "you will win this. In fact, I have an idea-"

"Nathalie,"

She looks up from the tablet she's glanced down at, "sir?"

"Thank you,"

She smilies with a little shake of her head. "You won't have to thank me. You know I'd do another for you."

"You shouldn't have to,"

"I want to," she reaches out with her hand, even as he inclunes his head towards her.

He shuts his eyes, ready for the caress of her hand on his cheek.

But all he feels is empty air.

And when he opens his eyes Nathalie is gone.

Just an illusion of the Fox Miraculous while the real Nathalie lies in bed below him; dying and hating him.

She still loves him. He still trusts her.

"Miraculous" is one of my sources of inspiration that helped me through difficult times, opened up areas to explore (for example, 3D animation) and to the present day gives me emotions that provide me strength. I’m not afraid to state that my favorite pairing is Gabenath. Yes, I shouldn’t be scared or ashamed to talk about it, but many fans/viewers of the Miraculous react too aggressively to this couple and the characters separately. But I believe that everyone has the right to single out certain characters for themselves, be interested in them and analyze them, and therefore should not be subject to toxic statements from others. Why am I writing all this? Apparently, I still cannot understand and accept this dissonance in the relationship between Gabriel and Nathalie. So I'll try to explain to myself and, perhaps, to others, who were also, to put it mildly, shocked after what they saw in season 5.

At the beginning of season 5 we see changes in Gabriel's behavior. If previously the goal of the main antagonist was to bring a loved one back to life, now it is not. Nowadays, Gabriel is ruled by revenge, he craves to take revenge on Ladybug and Cat Noir for all the losses and humiliations. Now he only wants to defeat them. That is, his priority has changed, family is no longer in the first place. Nathalie, as practically always, came up with a win-win plan for him, but he missed this opportunity, preferring revenge.

Then Gabriel forbids his son to date the girl he really loves. And I don't understand why Gabriel made a contract with Mrs. Tsurugi for a dynastic marriage between Adrien and Kagami and why he couldn't terminate it? One gets the feeling that Tomoe Tsurugi dominates him, but why? Let's remember how determined she was to achieve the goal, not allowing Gabriel to be distracted by emotions: "You're forgetting my part of the deal, Gabriel-san. As always you're losing yourself in sentimental trifles. Our vision of the future is much bigger than that. We are connected just like our children. They were made for each other. And I will not tolerate another glitch in our plan!".

It's hard to believe that Gabriel would be so indifferent to his son's feelings and opinions, so I think the writers went too far here by making Gabriel overly cruel!

As season 5 progresses, the relationship between Gabriel and Nathalie is heating up, becoming tense. Nathalie does not support the direction of Gabriel's strategy in the fight for the miraculous and does not approve of his prohibitions towards Adrien. She's mad at Gabriel, but she doesn't stop worrying about him! I guess if Gabriel had changed his attitude towards Adrien's choice in love and refused the deal with Mrs. Tsurugi, then the relationship between Gabriel and Nathalie would have become warmer.

Now let's turn to the episode where Gabriel accuses Nathalie of betrayal, emphasizing that he suspected her of this from the moment she began to support Marinette and Adrien's relationship. Yes, since Gabriel follows Mrs. Tsurugi's agreement, he will not tolerate any interference. In addition, he is obsessed with bringing into reality their shared plan with Tomoe Tsurugi to capture the miraculous – “Perfect Alliance”. Gabriel realizes that now he really has no choice. Nathalie will soon leave them, and he, being with the cataclysm, will not live long. That is why he only needs time to change everything through desire. And he does not give up his goal of bringing his wife back to life.

But what do we see next? Despite the fact that he accused Nathalie of betrayal, he later retracted his words. This can be confirmed by remembering the dialogue between Marinette and Gabriel: "She was right. Adrien was not alone. He had Nathalie and me. I've ruined everything. Nathalie's about to disappear. And so am I. Adrien will have no one left".

After talking with Marinette, Gabriel realizes that both Emilie and Nathalie were right. He admits his mistakes towards Adrien, but he no longer has time to apologize. So he decides to change his desire: “There is only one thing I wish to change”. Gabriel realizes that he cannot live without Emilie and leaves with her. But he does not forget about Nathalie, giving her his life. Yes, he was never able to come to terms with the death of his wife, but he healed Nathalie because she was dear to him and Adrien. He loves his son and doesn’t want him to be left an orphan, all alone. Gabriel is devoted and sincerely trusts Nathalie.

but seriously, gabenath babies meeting emilie is one of my go-to daydreams when i just feel like zoning out. and there are lots of variations

like the one where gabriel and nathalie were having an affair and he leaves emilie for nathalie when he finds out she's pregnant, and then we jump to nathalie going into labor while stuck in an elevator with emilie who has to deliver this baby while gabriel and adrien panic half a floor up and the fire department tries to rescue them. love this one though, because emilie becomes this child's godmother/favorite wine!aunt and the two are inseparable (so not an Absolutely Not ending, but an Absolutely Not everything leading up to it)

or the one where nathalie is pregnant with baby #2 and, after a few years of pretty decent health, the effects of the peacock miraculous start to reemerge. it gets bad enough that gabriel becomes desperate and goes to the heroes for help, and winds up negotiating with them to help nathalie AND emilie. they do. and while nathalie is on bedrest, emilie starts trying to insert herself back into gabriel's life. then one night after he takes her to some big event she kisses him outside her bedroom door and, naturally, nathalie sees it happen. anyway. gabriel tells emilie in no uncertain terms that he's not interested anymore and goes to drink himself into a guilty stupor down in the atelier, but when he doesn't come to bed nathalie assumes he stayed the night with emilie so she takes child #1 and goes to a hotel. insert lots of drama, lots of gabriel groveling, and emilie moving to london in the end

or the one where emilie has the rabbit miraculous and winds up in a future where gabriel and nathalie are together with a baby on the way

or the OTHER one where gabriel and nathalie are having an affair and nathalie gets pregnant and emilie somehow forces gabriel to fire/cut ties with her. and this happens:

"Excuse me," Penny says as the pulls the vibrating phone off the table. "You know how it is with - Oh! Jagged, look. Nathalie had her baby."

Immediately, Gabriel tenses. "But she's not due until the end of the month. Is everything... They're okay, right?"

followed by:

"She's so cute," Jagged coos, grinning, at the photo of the small screen. "Squishy. Quite long, too. But Nathalie isn't all that short, is she?" He looks up and Gabriel swears the other man can see into his soul. "Do you think the father is tall?"

Rant 1: the emilie/Gabriel backstory is adorable

Rant 2: Nathalie vs Gabriel? We alllll knew it was coming, but my goodness it ripped my heart out. I hope there’s a time reversal or some kind of multiverse where gabenath could have been a thing. I just can’t accept gabriel is gone for good, especially the way they portrayed his “death”.

Rant 3: the way they COMPLETELY excluded Adrien from determining his own happiness and discovering his father’s failures is so inexcusable. It’s his bloody life that is controlled by the rings! Geez.

Rant 4: Adrien is fatherless which is never ideal. I have a feeling this is not going to end well for him. The writers could have written a redemption arc for Gabriel, but instead they pushed him to be a complete monster which goes against the conflicted villain he was in S1-4. Locking adrien away? Holy freakamoly :(

Overall, the finale is very well written, but ethically I see some flaws.

A little gabenath drabble

Not really any warning’s just fluff really

Her eyes have been trained on the fishbowl for what seems like hours now, sapphire shining brightly as Nathalie eyes the goldfish in there.

“I still can’t believe this is what he wanted for his eighteenth.”

Gabriel smirks at his fiancé’s words, watching as she pushes herself off the desk and moves towards him.

“Seems like Adrien is developing Emilie’s interesting taste the more he grows.”

Nathalie chuckles at that, wrapping her arms around his neck. Those beautiful sapphire eyes are now fixed on him instead of those goldfish (Gabriel had to admit he was extremely happy about that)

It makes him smile knowing that she’d always be there beside him and Adrien, through thick and thin.

“We did good this year, I’m sure he’ll be happy with the party!”

The woman lightly bumps his chest, it’s something she does when she’s happy (it’s a little habit Adrien had picked up from Nathalie too)

“Yes, although I can’t wait for it to be just us three again, I’ve missed him.”

Nathalie’s eyes soften at his words and Gabriel lowers his neck so he can bump his forehead with her’s.

A subtle sign of affection but that was how they liked it.

“Me too, god we’re gonna be hovering over him every time he comes back for holidays.”

The couple share a laugh, Gabriel tightens the grip on Nathalie’s waist. He cherished even the most simple moments he shared with her.

“Indeed we are, but that’s what parents do.”

Yeah, they were just two worried adults who wanted their son to be happy.

They wanted the best for him and not see Adrien hurt anymore.

“Yeah, but I wouldn’t think too hard on it, we’re allowed to make mistakes. Also this whole conversation came out because of a fishbowl, we don’t need to go deeper then that.”

Gabriel lets out a snort, she was right, Nathalie was always right.

He had the woman he loved by his side and his son was returning home to celebrate his 18th.

That’s all Gabriel needed right now. No deep and intrusive thoughts stopping him from being happy anymore.

Life was good.

Yes, I rarely ship the canon couples. Why? Don't ask me that, I don't know why. I just can't avoid shipping non-canon couples. ♦️ Fascists. If you are antidemocratic, ultranationalist, right-wing or right-wing extremist, stay away from my blog. I don't want those people talking to me.

Nathalie's such a frustrating character for me. As a villain bad-bitch more competent than her boss? I liked her. I mean I. Hated her but you were supposed to! Gabenath was the classic spicy villain combo. I actually *liked* her original Show-Bible motivation. She's out there to steal the wish and make Gabriel pick her over Emilie.

'But that's so disempowering!' You might say. In the abstract? Yeah. But in context? Her out there trying to get a wish to take away his choice while he's taking away other people's choices with the butterfly? Oh that's such *layers*. Him trying to reclaim his life while she tries to steal it out from under him? So good! *Especially* since we know she is more competent.

Then they flip to the uwu good mom always loved Adrien narrative and she's just such a limp wet rag. She mopes around doing the bare minimum and looking sad so we can have her return as Adrien's guardian be a good thing.

Is it a good thing? I dunno- let's ask Adrien's sister.

So where do we begin?

so as a start i think the title “sick of losing soulmates” is such a powerful phrase and i’d love to apply it to gabenath in the sense that gabriel already had his soulmate, emilie, and then he lost her and now only when he’s finding that he could have something with nathalie (could have had) that he could have another soulmate, another magical chance from the universe, he ruined everything and now they’re both dying and the chance is once again lost. but that’s not even what i want to talk about

on a second thought the picture the song paints, someone outright refusing to lose another meaningful person in their life, is the energy i wish to see in the future of the show with adrien towards nathalie.

him being sick of losing gets even stronger because he hasn’t lost one but now two parents, and generally two people who have been relatively close to him in his life, two of the few people he knew for his 13 years of life before he started going to school.

he lost his mom, he lost his dad, and after he knows the truth of hawkmoth and mayura he could very well lose nathalie. he already loses the image of her as a 100% good person by knowing what she enabled from his father and how she actively participated in it. so not in the sense of soulmates and romantic partners but with his parental figures which are the people he has trusted the most, and who have been by his side his entire life, even longer than any of his friends or marinette.

i want him to have to confront the choice of accepting nathalie as the last parent figure he has left or losing yet another person he loves. the key part is that he somehow has that choice. the agency. and he decides to keep nathalie in his life because he’s sick of losing loved ones.

and it will take a lot of effort from both of them. maybe even nathalie isn’t sure about it because a thousand insecurities on top of the guilt of what she has done. about her not feeling quite part of the family, not feeling like she’s capable of raising a kid, feeling like she doesn’t deserve to stay in adrien’s life, fearing that she will only hurt him, that he will resent her forever, etc etc.

but adrien says no, i refuse to take no for an answer. we’re going to figure this out. together. and even nathalie understands that adrien has the right to make that decision and deserves to have more of his life under his own control so if this is what he wants then she accepts.

so they try.
