Today is World Children’s Day. It has been truly disheartening and disappointing to see the child protection sector remain silent on what experts of international law are calling “a war on children.”

The child protection sector has a long history depoliticizing why children experience unspeakable violence in the first place, and this refusal to name the structures of violence has never been more conspicuous.

We’re seeing government leaders have nonsensical debates about social media bans, while literally witnessing the daily murder of Palestinian children on social media begging for our empathy, and attacking young adults with moral clarity who hold our powerful institutions to account.

Adult supremacy over children’s autonomy, deciding which children to humanize and protect, is the bedrock of political violence. That the child protection community has been absent in naming this is appalling.

Tech’s complicity in this genocide is inarguable. Technologies of surveillance aid and abet the indiscriminate killing of Palestinian children, women, and men. The same tools that trust and safety professionals work hard to sanitize so they can be deployed to monitor and murder.

AJ put out this gut wrenching article on the martyred children of Gaza. Reading this, I cannot help but wonder what the point of a “world children’s day” is when we so flagrantly enable total dehumanization of young people.

If I had a dime for every time someone uses a version of that trite phrase to excuse abusive behavior, I'd be hella rich right now. What exactly do you mean by discipline? As in children unquestionably obeying commands? Silent, obedient children doesn't mean they're happy, socialized, let alone "good". Most people tend to conflate discipline with punishment. The latter party treads into abusive territory. Blind trust & obedience are what make them susceptible to predators unscrupulous characters. Those unscrupulous characters are people the victims know and trust. I personally think power plays a role in this. There's plenty of power-hungry adults who can't wait to go on a power trip.

Fun fact: public school CorPun is legal in 19 states, especially in the Bible Belt. For private schools, it's legal in ALL states except for New Jersey and Iowa.

Of course there's a difference between the two. However, discipline does NOT involve deliberately inflicting bodily harm & discomfort. As previously stated, one too many people conflate discipline with punishment. Interesting how it's only adults who seem to care about making categories, splitting hairs over differences. Whereas a child's brain doesn't know, nor does it give a shit about "differences". Do you stop to think about why children are "disrespectful"? That those particular students are the ones receiving less than stellar treatment at home? Let's be honest, a lot of you use the "disrespectful" label to describe students who are possibly disabled, neurodivergent and/or have other special needs. Black children are also more likely to be on the receiving end of maltreatment. Chronic exposure to high cortisol levels thanks to CorPun fucks up their brain development. How can you expect children to learn anything if you SOBs are constantly whacking the grey matter out of them? RE: Nissa’s Retcon

About once a month, I get a comment on one of my posts saying something along these lines

“Uhhh, you left out the part where Nissa was a fascist!”

To be perfectly frank, I think both of these points are stupid and not worth my time, but just to give these posters the benefit of the doubt, I’ll assume they mean well and respond to them, once and for all, this way:

To address the first point, you’re right: in my posts celebrating Nissa and the journeys she has taken, I do tend to leave out material that was retconned. This isn’t entirely true, however, as I wrote an entire essay about this on my Tumblr page, which I doubt people slipping into my comments to post “gotcha!” have bothered to read. But anyway, to assume the best of these posters, let’s take a brief look at this retcon. Outside of a few brief blurbs in the “Duels of the Planeswalkers” video game and her 2009-era character description on Magic’s website, the “racist Nissa” characterization comes entirely from the In the Teeth of Akoum novel from 2010. And yes! In this book, Nissa is a hilariously stupid racist (frighteningly like real racists, imo). However, many aspects of this book were retconned in Nissa’s Magic Origins reboot. To note, in the 2010 novel, Nissa has no idea what the fuck Akoum even is and lets herself get led there by Sorin and Anowon. In the reboot, we learn that, among many other changes, she went to Akoum previously in her life, as that journey is what led to her sparking. Either way, post-Origins, many aspects of Teeth are questionably accurate at best. It’s quite safe to assume that with how horrified Nissa is when she sees Lorwyn elves hunting goblin children for sport that that particular aspect of Nissa’s personality (white supremacy) is no longer a part of her characterization.

For the second point, this one is just crazy, man. I don’t know y’all come up with this stuff. I don’t even know how to address this politely. Keep in mind that I am not by any stretch saying that Nissa is now a perfect cinnamon roll that never did anything wrong ever. Nissa is at fault for not trusting Sorin and setting the Eldrazi free. This is a decision that forever will, and should, haunt her. In the newer lore, she still distrusts vampires and outsiders in her youth because of how she was raised, and this is wrong of her. But Nissa does not distrust them because she thinks she is somehow morally superior to them by nature of birth. Nissa was raised as a member of the Joraga nation. The Joraga, as even the most basic of searches into the Magic wiki tells us, “eschewed outsiders and held even the other elves of Zendikar in disdain.” Nissa carries this distrust of outsiders with her into her adult life and doesn’t really learn to let go of this until she meets the Gatewatch and learns to expand her horizons. And again, Nissa was wrong for this xenophobia. But don’t get it twisted: there is still a big difference between fear and distrust of outsiders and fascist, ‘hierarchy of races’ bullshit. Both are rooted in fear, but for all her many shortcomings, the retconned Nissa of the new lore would never advocate for elves ruling the multiverse at the top of a racial hierarchy like the older Nissa would (and did). This is hammered home in her Origin story where she is horrified by watching Dwynen lead other Lorwyn elves as they slaughter entire tribes because they think it's funny. Furthermore, on the subject of Lorwyn elves, I would argue that old Nissa is fairly boring as a villain, as “racist elves” as a concept was already explored in depth in the Lorwyn stories. An entire planeswalker with that as her bit would get boring very quickly.

Lastly, and I suppose this is subjective, but isn’t a nuanced character, deeply flawed but trying her best to shed the xenophobia ingrained in her more interesting that an unrepentant, racist dumbass learning that “goblins are people actually!” only after she condemned an entire world to death? The latter might be (darkly) funnier, I’ll give you that, but the former makes for a much more interesting and emotionally satisfying narrative arc.

internalized bigotry doesn't have to come from any particular source; the bigotry is baked into the very society we live in, no matter how accepting and affirming our personal upbringing was. even if you're raised by caregivers who actively give you messages to counteract these messages - hell, even if your caregivers are part of the same marginalized group(s) as you - they can't totally stop the worst messages from seeping in, because parents and caregivers are hardly ever the only source of information that a child has. perhaps the most obvious example would be that many children of color, even when they're raised by adults of the same racial identity, internalize racist ideas about themselves because white supremacy is fucking everywhere.

the point being: when gay people feel yucky and evil for experiencing gay attraction, yes, that is internalized homophobia. you're not bad or dumb for falling victim to it; it's just a thing that sadly happen to a lot of people who exist outside of acceptable parameters of society. society wants us to be "normal" and, failing that, to hate ourselves for being different, and there's a lot of pressure behind it!

listen: being attracted to girls is normal. it's not creepy and you're not a pervert. you're allowed to look at other girls and want to date them, kiss them, fuck them, whatever. none of those things are weird or bad, all of that's allowed.

and you can remind yourself of that all you want, but in my experience one of the best ways to help alleviate anxiety about the way you think or feel about something is to just immerse yourself in settings where that's normal. finding other gay people to hang out with is best, but music, TV, movies, books, youtube, social media personalities, podcasts, etc - all of these are venues to finding people who talk about being into women like it's a fine and normal and good thing. go immerse yourself, bby.

My best friend was there when I wrote my opinion on Rhaenyra the Mother of Tastelessness, and she told me that I sounded like a mean bitch. I thanked her for the compliment, but realized I hadn't been specific enough.

So let me explain with examples why adult Rhaenyra kneels before young Rhaenyra's throne of supremacy, but remember that this is my opinion, which you may not agree with, but you can't convince me otherwise, so don't waste your time, okay?

Let's take two episodes of season one with adult Rhaenyra, one in which she was a morally good, boring piece of cardboard, and the other in which she gained some taste while being a disgusting person.

Episode 6 is dedicated to the suffering of noble and gentle Rhaenyra, a weak but good-natured princess who is mercilessly bullied by her evil stepmother. She meekly accepts every insult Alicent throws at her, and suffers from the weight of her obligations and duties. When Alicent demands to see baby Joffrey, Rhaenyra doesn't tell her to fuck off or to come herself if she wants to see the newborn so much. She gets up with a tragic face and crawls through the castle, leaving rivers of blood in her wake, even though no one asked her to do so. Yes, she may not want to part with the baby, and be afraid of what Alicent might do, but let's be serious, Alicent was standing in a room with the king and several guards, what would she do to Joffrey, even if she wanted to, in front of others? Accidentally-intentionally swing him like a tennis racket and slam his head into the wall?

In the books, Joffrey's birth was a joyous occasion, with everyone adoring mother and child and celebrating the arrival of the new Targaryen-Velaryon. Book Rhaenyra would never allow Alicent to treat her like that. She is the heir to the throne, not a powerless servant, and she does everything to make sure everyone remembers it.

And so it is throughout the episode. Rhaenyra is constantly humiliated, belittled, insulted - and she suffers with the face of the Virgin Mary from the icon. She has no right to snap, to protest, to complain to her father - all this is unworthy of Saint Rhaenyra, whose morality cannot be questioned, otherwise the audience will remember the end of Daenerys' arc and how the prophecy is the second most useless thing in Game of Thrones after the White Walkers themselves.

And then there is episode 7. Rhaenyra, who almost came close to my favorite version of her. She does one stupid thing after another, and become most terrible person in the room every minute of her existence, but she is AMAZING and i'm adore her.

Sleep with her own uncle while her husband tries to drown himself, grieving the loss of his sister, who, by the way, was also the wife of that same uncle? Rhaenyra, what kind of scum are you, did your crotch itch that much? Couldn't you hold it for a couple of days? Your uncle follows you around like a hound in heat, he won't go anywhere until he gets what he wants, but you, not respecting either your husband or your dead sister-in-law, abandoned your own children for a long-awaited dick. Ew.

Demanding to torture your own ten-year-old half-brother, whose eye your son gouged out, and then being a sassy bitch and thanking your father for indifference to his son's injury?
