Yellowknife, NWT (No. 6)
The Wildcat Cafe is a vintage log cabin structure in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada and represents the mining camp style of early Yellowknife. The structure, which houses a summer restaurant, is located in what was then the central business district of the city. It is a City of Yellowknife Heritage Building, designated in 1992. First opened in 1937 by owners Willie Wylie and Smokey Stout, it is the oldest restaurant in Yellowknife. Subsequent owners were Carl and Dorothy Jensen (1939–1942) and Mah Gow (1942–1951), Yellowknife's first recorded Chinese resident. The cafe closed in 1951 with the illness of Mr. Gow. The building was saved from demolition in the late 1950s when a small group of Yellowknifers fought to have it protected as a heritage site. By 1970 no work had been done to restore the abandoned cabin and it was in poor shape when a new generation of concerned citizens lobbied for its protection. It was soon renovated and reopened as a functional restaurant in 1979. The Old Stope Association, a non-profit heritage society, was responsible for its operation in the 1970s–1980s, and today it is managed by the Wildcat Cafe Advisory Committee. In 1992, the cabin was declared a heritage site as an important old building in Yellowknife and the city took ownership. It is one of Yellowknife's most popular tourist attractions.
In 2011, the city of Yellowknife decided to completely renovate the log building, which had settled far into the ground and was leaning dangerously in several directions at once. The City engaged Rick Muyres, the premier log cabin builder in the NWT to oversee the rebuild. The dis-assembly process, including cataloguing and numbering the pieces, started on May 11, 2011. Reconstruction and repair continued during the summer of 2012 and the opening was delayed due to a number of unforeseen problems; however, the Wildcat Cafe reopened on June 22, 2013.
The Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, exhibited a replica of the cabin. This replica is being removed as part of a larger renovation to the museum's Canada Hall.

Day 3: ... and they were roommates
Me and Michael (MGMT) - washboose
welcome back to the midwest emo Blood Gulch Avenue AU
some tags: washboose, onesided cabnut (donut x caboose), side grimmons, endgame chucker, some angst, system epsilon
disclaimer: still super disjointed, I'm working on timel line and relationship stuff, it's a little messy, but they are all messy twenty-somethings, (eventually I'll release full tracks and who wrote what songs and about who, I promise)
(tw: canon typical character death and mental illness)
Michael and David meet at a funeral. David had just lost his best friend, Connie, and Michael is about to lose his to grief. Caboose isn't the best drummer in Blood Gulch, but he enjoys the sound and the repetitive movements. Wash is trying to reconnect with music after losing the one person he felt comfortable making music with passes. When Church leaves Violets Are Blue, and Tucker is forced to seek out a new guitarist, he remembers that other guy who played at Tex's funeral.
They suck together. Like really suck. They can't practice in Church's garage anymore, which lands them in the shitty community center basement. Caboose has a friend at the center that is teaching him acoustic guitar, and they write songs together. His friend, Donut (Wash swears that can't possibly be his name), also drives Caboose around after the big guy got his license suspended. Wash offers to take up some of the carpool duties since he doesn't live too far from where Caboose works.
At the center, Caboose's drumming is too loud, Tucker blows out his amp, and Wash has never touched an electric before in his life. Grif overhears the monstrosity that the Blues have become and begrudgingly invite them to his garage to practice. Donut has been filling in for Simmons after a big Grimmons fight, momentarily disbanding Red Riot. Donut and Caboose play a few of their songs for the group, the songs remind Grif of Simmons, Tucker thinks about Church, and Wash can't help but feel like Caboose is only playing to him. No one notices how Donut seems to only be singing to Caboose.
Wash writes a song for the first time since Connie passed. He sings this to the group, and Donut clocks him immediately. Later, Donut has a heart to heart with Wash about how different Caboose is. How he doesn't have a good memory, he doesn't understand a lot of basic concepts, how he seems to be in his own little world, and how Caboose wasn't always life this. Donut confesses that he has loved Michael for a very long time, since they were grade school kids. Then, Michael was in a bad accident that cut of oxygen to his brain. He deteriated quickly into someone Donut didn't recognize. Yes, he was still Caboose, but not his Michael. "He can be your Michael now."
Me and Michael, solid as they come.
Time passes, and they become The Reds And Blues. Grimmons is together, Church is back, but not the same, Wash reunites with Carolina who he hadn't seen since basic, and Caboose is, well, he's Caboose. He has a new dog he found on the street, he has his best friend back, and he gets to make music with more people. Caboose follows Wash around now that he's being super nice to him. They even play acoustic together! Caboose one day decides to share a song that reminds him of Wash. He doesn't remember where he heard it, but he asks Wash to help him finish it. They play this for The Reds And Blues. Donut leaves the band that night.
All I want is you, will you stay with me? Hold me in your arms and sway me like a sea.
Okay, I think I have to stop writing or I won't post this before midnight ^^" I love this AU so dearly,,, I wish I could actually, ya know, write it.

Jamie xx Brings New Album to Park Avenue Armory

Jamie xx – Park Avenue Armory – January 9, 2025
Remember good house parties? It’s OK if you don’t really. That whole pandemic, the miserable and anxious re-entry to regular life that hasn’t been quite so regular — it’s all made for a strange journey back to being among each other in a room, at a dinner, part of a gathering. Jamie xx, the producer, DJ and former drumbeat of the xx, seems to have felt that moment honestly. His show Thursday, the first of four at the historic Park Avenue Armory, was a conscious and earnest love letter to what we all missed so very desperately in that era. But don’t mistake me: James Smith ain’t saccharine.

After the terrific, wonderfully skilled hometown hero Kiernan Laveaux opened the night with a deliciously varied mix of melody, breaks and supreme groove, Smith took up the wheel. He revved it with a fire-starter, “Treat Each Other Right,” a single from this year’s In Waves, his third full-length album and the one he’s touring on. Smith, most especially on this record, has a penchant for dictums: “All we gotta do is treat each other right,” the chorus intones. So much of his oeuvre is blending and sampling the voices and melodies of the music that makes one simply move, no matter if it’s smoky chanteurs or pop-ass goddesses like Robyn (on “Life” off In Waves). He is a collab lad, a U.K. guy who has real appreciation for the history of dance music and its roots in every corner and subgenre.

I was wondering when, and absolutely not if, Smith would play “New York Is Killing Me,” his 2010 remix of jazz great Gil-Scott Heron. It landed right, taking us from the excitement and sparking edge of his opening third into the smooth hypnotic portion of the night. “Breathe” (In Waves) followed some songs after, giving my legs a nice break and the crowd some much-needed sway time.

The show’s video direction needs a moment, too. Smith stood before two large screens that reflected (what else?) the crowd itself, that happy, heaving mass, as if to say with little subtlety that yes, you too make the music what it is. Your dancing body, among its many similarities, is what this is all about.

Like any good party, all things must end. And much like LCD Soundsystem’s “All My Friends” is the calling card of Gen X closers, “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)” (In Colour, 2015) — many thanks to Young Thug and Popcaan — sends up the bat signal for all of us elder millennials. Winding his way down from disco deliverance, Smith let ’er rip to an expectant crowd, about to shuffle home. Let’s do it again. —Rachel Brody | @RachelCBrody

Off Script
pairings: Drew Starkey x reader genre: romantic comedy rating: pg13 synopsis: on the set of his new film, Drew Starkey, discovers an undeniable truth: that the line between fiction and reality is thinner than he ever imagined.

Foreword
Ain't you a lucky bastard?" Chase smirks, mischief flickering in his eyes as he takes a sip of his beer. "An extremely lucky bastard."
Franklin Avenue hides their favorite spot, a cozy bar tucked away from the usual hustle, frequented by regulars who know its charm. Tonight is no exception; the place is quiet, with just a few patrons scattered in its polished corners. Chase’s words hang in the air, but it takes a beat before they reach Drew, who’s absorbed in his phone.
"What?" Drew asks, his blue eyes still glued to the screen. He’s texting Maddie—if you could even call it texting. It’s just logistics, really. She’s asking if they’re still on for later. Drew knows Maddie is falling for him, but he doesn’t feel the same. He doesn’t want to hurt her—he cares about her, genuinely—but not in the way she hopes. He knows where this is headed, and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.
He hits send, feeling a weight settle in his chest. It’s just routine now. Casual, no strings, at least that’s what they agreed on. But he’s seen the look in her eyes lately, how things are shifting. It’s not mutual, though, and that troubles him more than he lets on. He really doesn’t want to hurt her.
Just then, Chase interrupts again. "Dude, look!" Chase insists, holding out his phone, grinning like he’s about to break some monumental news.
Drew sighs but grabs the phone anyway. He takes one look and immediately feels the weight of the headline hit him.
Y/N Y/L/N AND DREW STARKEY TO PLAY STARCROSSED LOVERS, the headline reads. THEIR FORBIDDEN LOVE STORY IN GRETA GERWIG'S NEW PERIOD DRAMA: DHARMA, COULD BE THE NEXT GREAT ON-SCREEN ROMANCE.
Drew stares at the article photo and lets out a low chuckle. The headline feels surreal.
Chase leans in, practically buzzing. "Dude, you realize what this means, right? You and Y/N? The next big on-screen couple. People are going to lose their minds over this."
Drew rubs the back of his neck, the reality of it slowly settling in. "Yeah, I know. I’m still processing it."
"You haven’t met her yet, have you?" Chase’s grin widens, seeing an opportunity to prod. "No, not yet. We’ll meet at the table read next week," Drew says, his voice a little too casual, but Chase picks up on it.
"And?" Chase raises an eyebrow, egging him on. "Come on, man. She’s stunning."
Drew tries to shake it off, but even he can’t deny Y/N’s allure. He’s seen her work, and there’s no denying the excitement building up. The thought of working with her—spending months playing lovers in such an intense role—is thrilling. There’s a quiet anticipation gnawing at him, even if he won’t admit it out loud.
But then, there’s also Joe Burrow. Drew remembers seeing a photo of them, —Joe kissing Y/N after his Super Bowl win two years ago.
"It’s not like that," Drew mutters. "It’s the role, the project itself that’s exciting. It’s Greta Gerwig, man. Huge opportunity. Incredible cast."
"Yeah, sure." Chase doesn’t buy it for a second, his smirk growing. "But I’m telling you, this could be it. You and her? The next big thing."
Drew chuckles, shaking his head. "You’re getting ahead of yourself."
"Am I though? You’ve seen how these things play out. On-screen chemistry... it’s magic, man. People are gonna be all over you two. "
Drew leans back, the reality of the situation sinking in. He’d be lying if he said the idea didn’t cross his mind, especially after the buzz the film’s announcement has already generated. His phone’s been blowing up ever since the casting news dropped. Everyone’s talking about it—the hype, the excitement. And maybe Chase is right... the public’s going to eat this up.
But there’s more to it than just that. He’s curious about her. About working with someone who’s got that kind of talent, that kind of energy on screen. And maybe—just maybe—about what’s going to happen when the cameras aren’t rolling.
Chase raises his beer in a mock toast. "To the next big on-screen couple."
Drew smirks, grabbing his beer, but as he clinks the glass, his mind is elsewhere. In just a few days, he’ll be sitting across from Y/N at the table read. He’s never met her before, but something tells him this is only the beginning.
"We’ll see," Drew murmurs, but deep down, there's a flicker of something more. Excitement. Curiosity. Anticipation.
And as the night drifts on, one thing becomes clear: this isn’t just another role. Something about this project—about her—is going to change everything.

A Quick And Easy Guide To The NYC Subway System (Using The Battle Subway)
Our subway system is actually three separate systems that unified in 1940. To help myself remember which lines are from which system, I assigned each of the three companies to one of the categories from the Battle Subway.
The IRT - Interborough Rapid Transit - is the oldest of the three, making its inaugural subway run in October 1904. (It just turned 120!) The IRT tunnels are narrower, so the cars are narrower as well, and the car lengths are a bit shorter. This makes it most suited for Singles, and considering Singles is likely the oldest codified form of battling, it makes sense. Prior to running subway lines, the IRT ran elevated lines.
The BMT - Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company - came about a bit later. It was originally known as the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company (BRT), but the BRT went bankrupt and reformed as the BMT in 1923. BMT tunnels are wider, so the cars are too, and they're also a bit longer. Its first subway line opened in 1908. (Prior to that, it, like the IRT, ran elevated lines, and also owned a number of surface lines and trolley lines in Brooklyn.) Since the BMT cars are wider, they naturally work better for Doubles.
The IND - Independent Subway System - is the youngest of the three and was actually owned by the City of New York. The cars are the same width and length as the BMT cars (again, wider tunnels), so they're good for battling with multiple Pokemon at once. I assigned Multi to the IND since it's the newest of the three and in-universe it just feels right for tag battle rules to solidify a bit later.
In 1940, the three systems were unified under the IND's operations, and a unified NYC Subway has existed ever since. Since the IRT cars are smaller than the BMT and IND cars, they're divided up into two divisions, A Division (IRT) and B Division (BMT and IRT). They all still run on standard gauge, though.
The chart in the image divides them up. The IRT is the numbered lines (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) and the 42nd Street Shuttle. The BMT is the J/Z, L, M, N, Q, R, and W lines and the Franklin Avenue Shuttle. The IND is the A, B, C, D, E, F, and G lines and the Rockaway Park Shuttle.
This is what I get paid to do at work, apparently.

These folks look suitably grim as they listen to the election returns at the temporary "wigwam" in the 7th Avenue Armory on November 6, 1928. Governor Alfred E. Smith, the Democratic candidate for president, is seated in the second row, third from the left. He lost to Herbert Hoover by 17 percentage points. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the (successful) candidate to succeed Smith as New York governor, is in the first row, third from the left.

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … January 23

1893 – Professional "sissy" actor Franklin Pangborn was born in Newark, New Jersey (d.1958). If you don't know the name you've seen his work in old late late show movies. The character actor appeared in dozens of comedies always playing prissy, fluttery clerks, bank tellers, assistant hotel managers, and department store floorwalkers. He appeared in many Preston Sturges movies as well as the W.C. Fields films "International House," "The Bank Dick," and "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break." Pangborn was an effective foil for many major comedians, including Fields, Harold Lloyd, Olsen and Johnson, and The Ritz Brothers. He appeared regularly in comedies and musicals of the 1940s.
When movie roles became scarce, he worked in television. For a time Pangborn was the announcer on Jack Paar's Tonight Show.
In his book "Screened Out: Playing Gay in Hollywood from Edison to Stonewall", the film scholar Richard Barrios wrote that some people "will praise the artistry of Pangborn as they bemoan its misuse, while others will prefer to revel in both the subversiveness of it all and the actor's skill. Still others will just shut the whole matter out and deny that there were any Gay characters in film prior to the late 1960s."
In his essay, "Laughing Hysterically: Sex, Repression, and American Film Comedy," the scholar Ed Sikov argues that: Pangborn probably appeared "in more screwball comedies than any other actor — "My Man Godfrey", "Easy Living", "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife", "A Girl, a Guy and a Gob", "The Palm Beach Story", "Vivacious Lady", "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town", "Design for Living", "Joy of Living", "Topper Takes a Trip", and "Fifth Avenue Girl" — probably because his character (the fussy, flustered, silly, and temperamental proto-Gay male) fits perfectly into screwball's world of urban extremism. A deft comedian, Pangborn elevated effeminacy into an art form. He makes himself an object of mockery in film after film, but he never gives up his dignity."
Pangborn died on July 20, 1958 after undergoing surgery. For his contributions to motion pictures, Pangborn has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1500 Vine Street.
1898 – American motion picture actor Randolph Scott was born. (d.1987) He was known for his roles in films as diverse as Follow the Fleet; The Last of the Mohicans; High, Wide, and Handsome and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.
In his earlier Westerns ... the Scott persona is debonair, easy-going, graceful, though with the necessary hint of steel. As he matures into his fifties his roles change. Increasingly Scott becomes the man who has seen it all, who has suffered pain, loss, and hardship, and who has now achieved a stoic calm.
Following the making of Ride the High Country (1962), Scott retired from film making at the age of 64. Having made shrewd investments throughout his life, he eventually accumulated a fortune worth a reputed US$100 million.
Scott married twice. The first time, in 1936, he became the second husband of heiress Marion Du Pont. Reputedly the couple spent little time together and the marriage ended in divorce three years later.
In 1944, Scott married Patricia Stillman, with whom he adopted two children. The marriage lasted 43 years until Scott's death in 1987.
Although Scott achieved fame as a motion picture actor, he managed to keep a fairly low profile with his private life. And therein lies the food for the rumors. Off screen he became good friends with Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. He met Grant on the set of Hot Saturday and shortly afterwards they began rooming together in a beach house in Malibu that became known as "Bachelor Hall." They would live together, on and off, for about ten years, presumably because they liked each other's company and wanted to save on living expenses. As Scott shared "Bachelor Hall" with Cary Grant for twelve years, it was rumored that the two actors were romantically involved, and that the name "Bachelor Hall" and the reported parade of women there were invented by the studio who wanted to keep their valuable actors away from any public scandal.
Randolph Scott & Cary Grant
In his book, "Cary Grant: Grant's Secret Sixth Marriage," author Marc Eliot claims Grant had a sexual relationship with Scott after they met on the set of Hot Saturday (1932). In his book, Hollywood Gay, Boze Hadleigh, author of numerous books purporting to reveal the sexual orientation of celebrities, makes various claims for Scott's homosexuality. He cites Gay director George Cukor who said about the homosexual relationship between the two: "Oh, Cary won't talk about it. At most, he'll say they did some wonderful pictures together. But Randolph will admit it - to a friend."
According to William J. Mann's book, "Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, 1910-1969," photographer Jerome Zerbe spent "three Gay months" in the movie colony taking many photographs of Grant and Scott, "attesting to their involvement in the Gay scene." In 1995, Richard Blackwell published his autobiography "From Rags to Bitches," where he declared he was lovers to both Cary Grant and Scott.
1959 – Scott Thorson, born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is an American best known for his relationship with and lawsuit against the entertainer Liberace.
A teenaged Thorson met Liberace in 1976 through his romantic friendship with dancer Bob Street (a friend of Hollywood producer Ray Arnett) who was staging Liberace's shows in Vegas. When Thorson was 18, Liberace hired him to act as his personal friend and companion, a position that allegedly included a five-year romantic relationship with lavish gifts, travel, and Liberace's promises that he would adopt and care for Thorson. Liberace claimed that he had "more mink coats and diamonds than Elizabeth Taylor". Liberace also incorporated Thorson into his Las Vegas stage performances – for example, Thorson drove Liberace's Rolls-Royce onstage, and was a dancer.
According to Thorson, their committed relationship ended because of Liberace's promiscuous behavior and Thorson's drug addiction. Thorson also claimed that it was Liberace that originally started him on the drugs, but then when his habit got out of control, Liberace cut him off from all of his credit cards. Thorson stated that following his plastic surgery, the surgeon provided for him a cocktail of highly addictive drugs that included cocaine, Quaaludes, biphetamines, and Demerol. Thorson stated that since he was so young at the time of meeting Liberace, he would do anything that he could to please him, including getting plastic surgery so that he could resemble him, but he felt that their relationship was one-sided. He called Liberace both generous and possessive.
In 2000, Thorson was among several people featured in the British television documentary Liberace: Too Much of a Good Thing Is Wonderful. In 2002, Thorson was interviewed by Larry King on Larry King Live, during which Thorson confirmed that, in the midst of his relationship with Liberace, he chose to have plastic surgery to look more like Liberace at the pianist's suggestion. Also during the interview with King, Thorson revealed his chin implant had been removed earlier in 2002.
In 1982, after he was let go by Liberace, Thorson filed a $113 million lawsuit against Liberace, part of which was a palimony suit. This was the first same-sex palimony case filed in U.S. history. Thorson decided to sue because he claimed that Liberace threw him out on the streets with nothing. Liberace continued to deny that he was homosexual, and during court depositions in 1984, he insisted that Thorson was never his lover. Throughout their lawsuit, Thorson stated that Liberace referred to him in the media as a disgruntled employee, a liar, a gold digger, and claimed that there was never a sexual relationship between them.
The case was settled out of court in 1986, with Thorson receiving a $75,000 cash settlement, plus three cars and three pet dogs worth another $20,000. Thorson visited and reconciled with Liberace shortly before the entertainer's death in February 1987. Thorson said, after Liberace had died, that he settled because he knew that Liberace was dying, and that Thorson had intended to sue based on conversion of property rather than palimony.
A year after Liberace's death, Thorson published a book about their relationship, Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace. Thorson's book was later adapted by Richard LaGravenese and Steven Soderbergh into the 2013 film Behind the Candelabra, in which Thorson was played by Matt Damon opposite Michael Douglas as Liberace.
In 1989, Thorson emerged as a pivotal witness in the prosecution of gangster Eddie Nash, in the 1981 quadruple murders of the Wonderland Gang. For his testimony, he was placed in the federal witness protection program. In 1990, he was shot five times when drug dealers broke into his hotel room in Jacksonville, Florida.
In 2008, Thorson pleaded guilty to felony drug and burglary charges and was sentenced to four years in prison.
Previously diagnosed with hepatitis C, in the autumn of 2012, Thorson was diagnosed with stage II cancer. Since his diagnosis, Thorson has made public pleas for money to continue his medical treatments. Thorson had planned in 2012 to re-release the book Behind the Candelabra to coincide with the film's release.
In February 2013, police investigating a lost wallet tracked the use of the victim's credit cards to a hotel in Reno, Nevada. Thorson was found to be using the credit cards and was arrested. Thorson (who also uses the alias Jess Marlow, an alias he says that he acquired when he entered the protection program in the Nash case) was booked on a variety of charges, including burglary and using a credit card without consent. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years' probation in July 2013.
Thorson did not do well on probation. In September 2013, he tested positive for methamphetamine, but was given another chance. He subsequently failed drug tests again – twice in October, and again on November 1, 2013. He was arrested on November 19, 2013, after violating a court order to enter an inpatient treatment facility in Reno two weeks earlier. On January 23, 2014, his probation was revoked and he was sentenced to 8 to 20 years in Nevada prison. Thorson is currently incarcerated in Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City.
2009 – If you think persecution of gays in the United States was "way back then" consider this item:
The Washington Post reported that the Maryland state police considered the LGBT activism group Equality Maryland to be terrorists. Equality Maryland, the state's largest Gay rights group, was among the peaceful protest groups to be classified as terrorists in a Maryland State Police database. The group was designated a "security threat" by the Homeland Security and Intelligence Division, which also kept dossiers on dozens of activists and at least a dozen groups. Police kept files on Equality Maryland's plans to hold rallies outside the State House in Annapolis to press for legislation reversing the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Police planned to purge the files before word of their existence became public.
However, the files were revealed at a news conference, where a dozen Democratic lawmakers announced plans to introduce legislation to prevent future surveillance of nonviolent groups. Police would need "reasonable articulated suspicion of actual criminal activity" before they could conduct surveillance, the legislation's sponsors said. Gov. Martin O'Malley also planned to call for a similar bill. The measure also would prevent police from keeping files on citizens, unless the information is part of "a legitimate criminal investigation."

@liminalmemories21 tagged me in this and I just KNOW she knew I was going to (A) fall down like, a zillion rabbit holes, (B) sit there for a while trying to think of a story/author that was one the tip of my tongue but failing, and (C) then get upset again because, y'all, the internet is NOT FOREVER. Of course there are things this makes me happy about, but in this instance.
Okay, this is no way all of them. I am re-reader. I reread. I have been in fandom for over 30 years. I retain the right to post again later with more of these because I want my friends to get the pleasure of reading these for the first time or the thousandth time -- it's all the same.
Also some of these are sad. Some are happy. I've found that I go to all them for comfort, depending on the day.
freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose by synecdochic (SGA, Rodney/John).
"There is a gravestone in Arlington National Cemetery. It sits watch over an empty grave, and there is a vine with small blue flowers, one the gardeners can't identify from any book, twining up its side." I know I've mentioned it before, but this fic lives rent free in my brain and it's sad, and lovely, and sad, and thought provoking and lovely and just read it.
This is how it works by Lim
A connected rec: Lim, not my lim but another fandom Lim, made this video for/about freedom's just another word. I'm so glad it exists on the internet still. Scroll down in the link and you might have to hit play a few times to get it to load, but it's worth it. This is the vid that made me realize the power of vids AND introduced me to Regina Spektor, so, thank you lim.
Telegraph Avenue by hackthis (the O.C. -- Seth/OMC, Seth/Ryan)
I am, in fact, sending you to the wilds of livejournal because hackthis left fandom (mumbles under her breadth) years ago and none of her stuff exists on ao3 (if it does, please let me know because that would be amazing). Honestly, I rec all her stuff -- the generation kill, the inception, freaking neville longbottom/theodore nott -- read it all, even if it's on livejournal.
Pre-Existing Condition by Helenish (Die Hard, Matt Farrell/John McClane)
Okay, okay, bear with me. I had an incredibly difficult time figuring out which of Helenish's stories to link, but I went with this one because it's a showcase of -- I will follow this author anywhere and love it. I have read this story so many times. In Helenish, I trust and that's going to be a running theme here. Come for this one, stay for the Inception, SGA, Teen Wolf, and hockey rpf, if that's your bag. Apparently, helenish was my very first bookmark on ao3 which totally tracks.
Don't You Shake Alone by Dira Sudis (Generation Kill, Brad/Nate)
Nate looked exactly like Brad always pictured him: exhausted in the full life-in-a-combat-zone sense of the word. Nate has a baby and Brad shows up. I have read this oh, like, at least a dozen times. It hits every single one of my buttons.
Steinway!verse by toomuchplor (Inception, Arthur/Eames)
Being a freshman piano performance major at a prestigious New England conservatory is difficult enough without landing the school's star baritone as your singer, and inevitably, your hopeless crush.
Written by the Victors by Cesperanza (SGA)
Caroll, Franklin R. Atlantis Revisited. New York and London, Routledge, 2011. Chapman, Denise. Several Kinds of Genius: The Life of Rodney McKay. NY: Harper Perennial, 2015. Croft, Rosalind. City of Spires: A Memoir. Toronto: The Mercury Press, 2009. Dugan, Paul. A Political History of Atlantis. Oxford: OUP, 2012. This changed fandom and me, and go read it, if you haven't. Also, Lim recced With six you get eggroll which was, uh, maybe why I finally watched Due South.
Behind closed doors: collected oral histories of queer community in New York, 1930-1945. doi 10.1999/journal.amhistqstud.32557038 by wobblyheadeddollcaper (Captain America, Bucky/Steve)
Steve Rogers, supersoldier and inept historian, confronts the absence of evidence. Those who know me, know why.
Drastically Redefining Protocol by rageprufrock (Merlin, Arthur/Merlin)
Honestly, another author I follow to the ends of the earth. I know Lim recced it to, so hopefully you go read it.
Noblesse Oblige by Alethia (Generation Kill, Brad/Nate)
This was not a normal day. This day existed to prove that hell was real and it came with musical accompaniment by will.i.am. On this day, Steve figured out how to get him out of the office and torment him at the same time by sending him to the godforsaken DNC where it was all 'we shall overcome,' oh-happy-day bullshit. Which merely justified Brad's hatred of the world and everyone in it. With a side of Worthy of Trust and Confidence because her Brad voice is just THAT GOOD.
I don't see how there won't be a second set of these at some point.
