Enforcement of Prohibition was set to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 17, 1920, and non-teetotalers prepared either by wallowing in denial or by partying until the last midnight. They also seized on a loophole in the 18th Amendment, which prohibited selling or transporting alcohol but said nothing about drinking what you already had.
Boozehounds pulled up to businesses eager to offload their soon-to-be-banned stock and filled their limousines with crates of hooch. One woman in California bought the entire contents of a liquor store and had it transported to her basement. Any alcohol that wasn’t secured could be seized by the authorities and destroyed—like these 749 cases of beer, which were found and smashed on November 21, 1923.

The Bait and Switch
Chapter 12: Extraction
Probably the most violent and graphic torture scene I've written. Alastor sure lives up to his name of being difficult and insane lol.

“I am wearing a 1920s (?) dress that I hand dyed from a spoiled olive color to this berry shade, an 80s handbag from Beacons Closet, and vintage reproduction shoes (if only I could fit into antique heels!). I have been wearing shades of red exclusively for a year now; it’s been the best sartorial challenge as I can no longer rely on color blocking to make an outfit. Instead it’s about the different shades of red (which there are many), silhouette, texture, etc. As always, the early 20th century has been my main inspiration, with my current obsession being drop waist cuts. Ugh, to be a flâneuse in 1920s Berlin! ”
