i had an accident and ended up with three tears in my knee, a lot of pain, a lot of stress, and a lot of insurance paperwork. but i also got a stranger on the bus calling an ambulance for me when she realized i was in too much pain to tell the driver i needed one. i had another stranger tell me to 'hang in there' as they got off my stalled bus to take another one home. the EMT told me she used to do ballet and she knew how much pain i was in and that she would advocate for me as hard as she could so that, at the hospital, i wouldn't have to prove that i couldn't move myself from the gurney and into a wheelchair. the nurse got me a blanket to cover up my bared leg, after he cut my pants to be able to examine my leg, because i'm muslim and he wanted to make me feel a tiny bit better in this small way. my doctor told me her son had an accident on the bus for the same reason i did, just to make me feel less alone, before diving into helping me. my four year old niece asks me every morning if my leg is ok and touches it very gently. my parents drive me to every appointment they canso i don't have to pay for an uber. my overseas friend messaged her friend—a med student in a different country from both of us—for what i might have to look forward to when it comes to healing, because i havent gotten medical advice on that yet, and knowing more makes me feel less anxious and out of control. the med student replied, and offered to help me decode my MRI results if i need to.

My name is Mahmoud, and today I am writing about my family

I’m husband and father of two children we evacuated at the beginning of the war. but my family is still suffering inside Gaza

My family was a beautiful, cheerful family that loved life and they love each other.

We have children are make fun and they the source of happiness for home

Until one day, the sounds of explosions overtook them. Days passed, and these days were very difficult for everyone in the family. Suddenly, my father fell ill, and it was determined that he was suffering with cancer, and needed surgery outside the Gaza Strip. But, because of the situation, he was unable to leave Gaza for treatment — eventually, due to lack of medical care and after suffering with his symptoms, he died. Five days after my father death, his children (my brothers- and sisters) were injured after their home was targeted. My brother suffered a double amputation of his feet and one hand, and his other siblings were injured as well, including a severe back injury.

My family suffers under these difficult situation and they have been displaced several times in more than one place.

I'm Eman. I’m 17 years old, and until the start of this war I lived a happy life in Gaza with my mother.

We’re currently residing in Khan Younis and living in a tent as a result of the brutalities committed by Israel since October 7th.

My father was martyred in the 2014 aggression.

My mother has been suffering from increase blood pressure and heart problems for more than four years and needs lifelong treatment now that her condition has worsened since the beginning of the aggression

We struggle daily to survive in an environment full of threats and risks.

The occupation destroyed my dreams and my future.

My school has also been destroyed, and I'm now a year behind other students my age.

I’m trying to collect the necessary funds to evacuate me and my mother, 49 years old, and start a new life after reaching Egypt.

I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.

I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:

Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)

Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)

Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often

Eat dessert first

Celebrate well, and often

Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)

Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.

Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate

Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)

Walk without having a specific destination or goal

Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.

I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.
