chapter one — RESEARCH & EXPERIMENTS

maybe this is your first time diving into the world of aesthetic styles and fashion! or maybe you’re looking to start fresh with your look, but you aren’t sure where to begin! well, allow me to help guide you in taking your first steps into a whole new you! … fashion-wise, of course. this first chapter will discuss how to get started in your style journey, so let’s get right into it!

୨ৎ — style & aesthetic options

there’s a large variety of aesthetics to choose from, and it’s so wonderful knowing that there are so many different styles to look into! that’s the beauty of having options, you get to see all that’s available to you!

of course there’s plenty more out there that you can look at! pinterest will be your best friend when it comes to looking at all the different aesthetics!

୨ৎ — research

once you’ve looked over all the different aesthetics and styles that are available to you, start making a list of the ones that interest you the most! once you’ve compiled that list, start taking a deep dive into them. look at the color schemes, make note of key pieces of clothing that follow the specific style, notice what accessories are typically used!

color schemes: soft pinks/creams/pastels, light colors

key pieces: skirts & dresses, form fitting tops

accessories: bows, dainty/minimal jewelry, lace

color schemes: any color pallet will do! (neutrals, monochromatic, cherry reds, blues, etc.)

key pieces: skirts/dresses, dress pants, statement cardigans/coats/sweaters, loafers

accessories: pearls, handbags/purses, headbands

academia

color schemes: neutral colors (light academia focuses on those lighter neutrals while dark academia focuses on the darker tones)

key pieces: sweaters, cardigans, sweater vests, button ups, turtlenecks

accessories: minimal to no jewelry, leather bags (backpacks), fabric tote bags

୨ৎ — vision boards

after doing some research, start creating vision boards for outfit inspiration! this will help just organize what exactly you’re looking for in whatever aesthetic/style you chose! and, it’ll help when you start to play around with different outfits!

again, pinterest will help with this a lot! see what outfits you really love and might want to recreate and save them into a board. there also might be some creators out there on different social media platforms that you might want to take inspiration from, so feel free to include their outfits as well into your vision board!

doing this will also help you see different trends within each style. you’ll see how different outfits have similarities in key pieces, accessories, and even color schemes while also seeing that even though there are tons of similarities, there’s still a wide variety of ways to style the clothes into different kinds of outfits!

୨ৎ — experimenting

this is the fun part: trying out different outfits based on the aesthetics you chose! this might take some time, but sort through your closet and see what you already have.

what to look for:

basics: simple t-shirts, tops, & bottoms

key pieces: statement tops, dresses, coats/cardigans/sweaters, shoes

accessories: jewelry, hats, scarves, bags

play around with different outfits & try out layering! work with what you’ve currently got and make note of what other pieces you might want for your outfits. maybe you’ve got on a super cute pleated skirt with a simple long-sleeve as your top! you might want to add a pair of sheer tights, but you might not have any, so make a note of adding tights to your shopping list! you might also feel like your outfit could go well with a super cute statement cardigan to bring some life into your look, but all your sweaters and cardigans are pretty basic, so add a new cardigan to your list as well!

it’s important to sift through your current wardrobe and figure out what you want to keep and what needs to go. you might have a lot of pieces that just don’t spark any joy anymore, so maybe you’ll create a donate pile. or maybe it turns out you’ve got all the right basics and accessories for a certain aesthetic you want to try, so you’d want to bring those items forward in your closet for easier access to them.

୨ৎ — take pictures

whenever i put on an outfit that i am really proud of, i’ll snap a quick pic of it so that i can save it for later inspiration! sometimes i’ll even lay out the outfit on my bed and take a picture that way too!

it’s good to save those ideas in your phone to look back on them for future reference or to figure out what else that outfit still needs to make it perfect.

final notes —

curating your perfect and ideal wardrobe takes time, but i personally think doing all the research and trying out new looks makes the process go by a lot faster in a fun and exciting way! it’s also important to know that your style is going to change a lot as you grow. as our minds and bodies change, so do our styles! and that’s okay! back in high school, i definitely sported that “abg” aesthetic, but as i got into college i started leaning more towards light academia and then in later years i experimented and felt more comfortable in more alternative fashion! that’s what i love about fashion, the fact that it’s always changing and there’s so many new looks and pieces to try out makes it that much more exciting! so always feel free to explore and try out new things! you might discover some really great things.

The central gold disc has a green stone. More blue fabric wraps around her chest, either pleated or wrappings. Over this is a painted vest, primarily decorated with blue, green, and white. On her upper arm is an armband with an illustration of a horse galloping in grass. She has leather wrappings on her wrist and opposite upper arm. She wears one visible ring. She wears a leather necklace with a triangular gold pendant and gold triangular earrings. Her hair is in at least three braids, tied off with gold beads. She has bangs. Jhiqui also wears Dothraki clothes, although hers do not look practical for riding. Her clothes are primarily fabric of a deep raspberry color. chapter two — LEARNING THE LAYERS

a key aspect of creating the perfect outfit is by layering! layers create depth in your style, adding more to your outfit can create a whole new & unique piece of art on your body! there’s a whole variety of ways to layer your clothes, and this chapter will be all about how to do so!

୨ৎ — why add layers?

as mentioned above, layers create so much more for your outfit. they even help with curating the exact aesthetic you want to follow! each aesthetic mentioned in the previous chapter have various ways of layering different pieces that make it unique to that specific style, so having those layers can really emphasize the kind of look you’re going for.

as we know, layers are also great during colder seasons. but, during those colder months, sometimes we find it a bit more difficult to create outfits that are pleasing to the eye or we might find ourselves disappointed by having to cover up such a cute outfit with a large winter coat. layers can be added to not only keep you warm, but also so that your outfit doesn’t have to be obstructed by a big, puffy coat! (but please keep yourselves warm if it’s disturbingly cold outside!)

୨ৎ — how to layer

there’s so many different ways to layer! whether it’s throwing an oversized knit sweater over a collared top, putting leg warmers on top of lace tights, or wearing a form fitted turtleneck underneath a cute maxi dress, the world of layering is full of options!

your foundation of the fit

your outfit needs to have a foundation; a base. so you can start with a simple top paired with simple bottoms! you can get even more basic by starting with base layers like a camisole tank top/under shirt and tights (if you plan on wearing a skirt/dress)!

your base also doesn’t have to be the bare minimum of the outfit, it could be specific articles of clothing like a shirt, skirt, pants, dress, sweater, or even a cardigan that you want to center your outfit around!

key pieces

when i say “key pieces”, i don’t mean that clothes that stand out in your outfit. key pieces aren’t necessarily your statement clothes or the “centerpiece” of your look. key pieces could be anything! shirts, sweaters, skirts, a dress, a coat; anything at all!

let’s say your base is a white button-up collared shirt paired with a dark brown corduroy skirt and black tights. simple start, right? well, adding in things like a beige/tan/cream colored sweater vest on top of the button-up and cream colored leg warmers could be your “key pieces”. they’re essentially what pulls your entire outfit together! again, they don’t have to be anything that really stands out, they could also be what you might consider your clothing basics.

accessories

yes, accessories are a part of layering! people always layer their jewelry, but jewelry can also be layers to your outfit!

alright, so imagine that outfit i talked about in the previous point and think of the jewelry that could go well with it! from that outfit, we can get a light academia vibe to it, and with light academia there isn’t much layering of jewelry; it’s all pretty minimal when it comes to those kinds of accessories. but! adding a simple necklace with a dainty charm could be a perfect layer to your outfit! maybe you might throw in a subtle charm bracelet as well with a couple rings!

୨ৎ — layering examples

you can get as simple or intricate as you’d like!

simple layering

doing simple layers consists of things like a cardigan over a basic top or a statement jacket over a crop top! the layers usually consist of 1-3 layers. simple layering can help dress up an outfit by just a basic touch!

intricate layering

multiple layers take your outfit to the next level! it helps when you’re looking to add in various textures or more volume to your outfit. more ruffled skirts underneath simplistic textured skirts add to your top skirt layer’s volume! long sleeve collared button-ups underneath chunky, knit sweaters give your outfit a little more of a sleeker and more put-together look!

final notes —

layering can be tricky, but once you get the hang of what works best for your body and what textures work well together, layering can come naturally to you and it can become easier for you to spice up your outfits!

My Guide to Patch/Crust DIY Pants That No One Asked For:

(If you see this guide go through changes, you’re not crazy, I update it all the time)

I’ve noticed that my DIY pants had been noticed on here, so I’d thought I make a guide for new punks getting into the scene 💖

I’ve been in the punk scene for a little over two years now, so don’t take everything I say to heart, I’ve got lots to learn.

Typically, you want to start out with a good base. For instance, the pants you choose can make or break your project. I don’t suggest buying super expensive pants, but don’t buy them super low quality either. You want something that lasts, as crust or patch pants are meant to be your only pair.

EDIT: Before I start any new project, I look around my stuff to see if I can repurpose anything. Old T shirts, bed sheets, bags, you name it. It’s so much easier to repurpose your stuff before buying new things, and you save money doing it. Before you buy pants, see if you can find a pair you already own! I had to buy new ones because I only had one other pair of jeans that I wear to work.

I’ve seen some tutorials floating around for DIY can spikes. Please be very careful doing this. If you’re moshing in a vest made with cut up aluminum, you can seriously hurt someone if you’re not careful. Be on the safe side and either borrow/buy pre made studs and spikes or save the DIY can spikes for non-moshing vests/pants/cuffs.

If you’re moshing with any studs or spikes at ALL, they should be blunt!!!

Good places to buy pants

Thrift (it’s a bit of a crapshoot if you have a hard time finding sizes, but if they’ve lasted long enough to end up in a thrift store, then it means they’re more likely good quality. Check the tags!!)

ASOS (I recommend if you have a hard time finding your size. I can’t guarantee the sustainability of this site though.)

Mercari (Like an online goodwill. I find a lot of awesome clothes on here. You can download the app.)

Depop (I seldom shop on here, but similar to Mercari with a wider range of brands.)

How the Pants Should Fit

The fit of your pants can also affect how they lay on you. I suggest buying pants slightly larger on you, if you’re covering them in patches. When you start sewing, you’re going to find that they’re going to shrink a little bit. So please avoid tight fitting jeans if you can! Straight or relaxed fit are the best.

EDIT: If skinny/fitting pants are all you got, sometimes making relief cuts at the knees help when you try to bend down.

Patches

Patches are going to be what makes your pants unique! There’s quite a few you can choose from: plain patches, band patches, politics patches, etcetera. If you’re going to cover the entirety of your pants, I suggest going to Joann’s or Michaels (fuck Hobby Lobby) for fabric. Buy a yard or two canvas or pleather (or both). Otherwise, I usually cut up old T-shirts for my fabric.

How to Make Your Own Patches

Stencil (very straightforward, here’s a guide) (please check out Anarchostensilism on insta/Tiktok/Deviantart)

Paint (Buy white/black stencil fabric paint. I don’t suggest acrylic, since it’s not made to move with fabric)

Etsy (While I hate them for the way they treat their sellers, unfortunately this can be a main source of income for some.)

If you’re going to make crust pants, it’s imperative that you have crust bands on your patches, that’s what makes them crust! (Apart from never washing them)

Edit: I would do your own research on the crust punk subculture, there’s a lot of discourse out there on what makes punks crust punks and so on.

Washing your pants is not a black and white rule, but you can ruin the integrity of your work if you carelessly throw them in the washer. Like if you were to throw a suede jacket into the washer, there’s certain steps to take!

Things to Add to Your Pants

Buttons (you can buy or make your own. Here’s a guide for DIY bottle cap buttons)

Pockets (easy to monkey wrench with a few spare patches, but here’s a pattern)

Handkerchiefs (the hankey code, much like the lace code, is pretty much dead. But it’s up to you if you want to signal something with it.)

Wallet chains (here’s a cool guide to making your own!)

Bum flap (by far the coolest thing on this list. Makes your ass not hurt when you sit on the sidewalk. Here’s a video)

Make them convertible (I made mine into zip off shorts. Here’s a video)

I made this up, but I added removable knee pads to mine.
