I got curious, so I did a bit of “research”
The most popular fic in English is an NSFW (incredibly raunchy, wow) Guardians of the Galaxy fic with 128.179 kudos.
In Mandarin, it is a mature RPF fic of the actors from The Untamed that resulted in AO3 being blocked in Mainland China. It currently has 26.916 kudos
For Spanish, the prize goes to an explicit omegaverse & mpreg The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System fic with  3.245 kudos
Indonesian gives us a BTS college AU with 1.569 kudos and French stays on the bandom vibes by giving us an explicit One Direction dystopian story. But the band rpf award goes to Tagalog* ***, with their first page (sorted by kudos) being all Kpop (ENHYPEN, EXO & SEVENTEEN) and no-fandom.
(For those curious, Korean has a low amount of Kpop rpf on their first page. I assume they publish it somewhere else)
Egyptian Hieroglyphics (which, yes, is an option on AO3) gives us a beautiful song translation with an impressive 495 kudos. I really recommend everyone check it out; it is incredible. Welsh** (160) and Old English (222)  also had their most popular work have an English translation. Latin (124), on the other hand, is just fully in Latin. There are a few translations, but they are provided by other people and not the original author.
Greek has a lot of Greek political RPF. Like, a lot.
I was incredibly surprised by the fact that you can write fanfiction in Quebecois sign language. I was not surprised at all by the fact that Sindarin was an option.
.
A few of the languages had their most popular stories not be in that language and just be a case of mislabelling (or, in some cases, people using less-used languages on AO3 as dumping grounds for tests or personal notes.) Also, there were a couple of languages with no stories at all.
If you have been thinking about writing fic in a language other than English, take this as a call for action. There are a lot of people out there reading in all sorts of languages. Even in languages with only a couple kudos, those are a couple of people who are incredibly happy to find a story of a media they love in a language they love too.
. Edits from 7/12/2022:
* Filipino*** is the standardized version of Tagalog and the way Ao3 refers to the language, which is why that is the word used instead of Tagalog. Feel free to reach out if there is a better way to word that sentence.
** Welsh was included next to Old English as they both had English translations, and not as an implication that it is a dead language. Welsh is a living, thriving language with more than half a million speakers.
.
Edits from 26/12/2022:
*** More Tagalog speakers reached out asking me to change the language name to Tagalog. I did. The original note is left for those looking at the notes/asks and wondering what is going on.

Hi, I'm Michael [he/they], born in '99, and this is my side blog for all things MaDD (Maladaptive Daydreaming). I've had MaDD since I was young, and likely multiple other mental disorders, but have yet to be diagnosed for various reasons.
This blog is at least five years old and has been inactive for most of that time. I want to bring it back and post more about my paras and also general posts about MaDD.
Tumblr media
Brief Overview of My Paracosms and Paras
My daydreams and paras have changed many times over the years depending on what my hyperfocuses are at the time. So, I have multiple Paracosms, with multiple different AUs within them.
Transcendent - This blog's namesake, though it is not currently my main Paracosm. A punk band made up of five trans members. Miché Valentino - Parame Singer, Songwriter, Pianist. Ashley Nolans - Paraship. Backing Vocalist, Leading Guitarist, Producer. Nikki Archer - Bass Guitarist, Composure. Lex Woods - Rhythm Guitarist, Violinist.
The Lost Ones - When two aliens come to Earth, the upset the balance of the cosmos and the King and Queen Deities by managing to find the one person meant to be hidden. Does not have a Parame. Alexandria Lee - A College student majoring in Dance. Ashe Leroy - Alien Prince rebelling from his cruel parents. Feliks Bellator - The Prince's servant that came with him.
Amethyst - No posts yet. A 4th Gen Kpop girl group with six members who debuted July 1st, 2021. Known for having Two Leaders, an 'East' and a 'West' Leader, to promote the same music in both Korean and the USA, with all songs having two versions, Korean and English. [Similar to EXO's original concept but the band is not split up] Oonagh - Western Leader, Lead Rapper, Main Dancer. 00er. EVER - Eastern Leder. Main Rapper, Visual. 00er. Yuka - Main Vocalist. 01er. Step by step [pt.2]
Chapters: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7
Genre: fluff, comedy, romcom, haters to lovers
Main Characters: Park Chanyeol; Kang Yushin (OC); Kwon Soonyoung; Byun Baekhyun; Kim Jongdae; Do Kyungsoo
Setting: college AU; art college AU; dance class AU; college band AU
„We take a dance class together and our next routine calls for partnership, and we got put togeth−STop standing on my foot!” AU
Tumblr media
A day later, I found myself in the university’s practice room with a sly Soonyoung and a never-been-clumsier Chanyeol.
Actually, let me tell you that this class was for amateurs only. If it hadn’t been for Soonyoung’s internship, he wouldn’t have to teach classes for people who were – to be honest – quite analphabetic when it came to dancing. Not to mention that if it weren’t for my best friend and for the extra credits, I wouldn’t have joined his class, let alone let him tease me with my non-existent dance skills, no matter how much I enjoyed it. Dancing wasn’t my field, I just loved doing it from time to time but I guess we were all there for such reasons. We were all art students but keen on expressing ourselves in a different way. For example, Jungkook was at the Fine Arts departure as a photographer prodigy, Soonyoung was – if it wasn’t obvious enough – at the Dance departure as a soon-to-be choreographer and I… well, I was just an ordinary student majoring in Critical Writing in Art and Design. According to my best friend, even the name of my major tells a lot about me. Well, decide it for yourself.
You can easily see that we weren’t professionals, therefore I didn’t even expect Chanyeol to be any different. He was talented in singing and writing lyrics but he wasn’t particularly good at dance. What now? The thing was that he wasn’t just bad, he was literally the worst amateur that I had ever met. I know we had exactly 2 classes together so far but that 3 hours that I had to spend with him – as his partner! – were the definition of Hell. The epitome of wasted time.
Small wonder why I continued on my rampage when after another terrific dance class with my absolutely “flawless” dance partner, I heard Soonyoung’s plan – or to be precise, it was more of a demand coated with sweet, friendly words.
“Guys, you’ve been doing great since I put you in pairs, so now, I want you to do something without my guidance,” he announced energetically and some guys even hollered in joy while others clapped enthusiastically. On the other hand, Chanyeol became like a living statue beside me, his features firm and his smile replaced with a worried flinch.
“I want you to find yourselves a choreography that you think would fit both of your personalities – or even better, you can come up with a choreo on your own – and show it to us,” he not-so-obviously winked at me while I glared at him like I wanted to eat him alive. “I know you are probably busy, so you can perform your dance anytime until the end of the semester. Of course, I want you to challenge yourself, so you can also dance with chairs or blind-folded, you can dress up as your favourite kpop member. Whatever. Just work together and enjoy yourselves!”
A wave of undeniable bafflement and ecstatic euphoria filled the room, leaving students bouncing up and down like two-year-old kids, flinging their arms in the air in disbelief or standing in bewilderment with their mouth agape. Needless to say but I was the member of the last group.
“What?” Chanyeol snickered, apparently unable to process what he had just heard and I soon joined in, too.
“What?” I exclaimed frantically, my voice higher than usual. I was seriously struggling to keep my rage at bay because I didn’t want to look offended or anything but… I was undeniably offended! How could that Soonyoung guy come up with such a gruesome idea? How could he think that we would be able to learn choreographies without his guidance? How could he do this to us? To his best friend?
“If you have any questions, you know where to find me. But for now, let’s call it a day! See you next Monday!” he waved to us with his trademark grin and made an attempt to scamper away. Of course, I couldn’t let him run away without being scolded.
“What were you thinking, Kwon Soonyoung?” I spat fervently but all the rage that I had accumulated lately decided to come to surface right then and there. The blonde guy’s tiny eyes widened in shock, probably more because of my way to express my anger, rather than my accusing tone. He knew just as well as I did that I only called him by his full name when I was pissed off. When I was really, really mad. Utterly mad.
“I was thinking that you would see it as an opportunity to finally get to know your partner a little bit better.”
“Why on Earth I would want to know him better?” I cried out in annoyance and flailed my arms around wildly. From the corner of my eyes, I saw as Chanyeol flinched but I couldn’t care less. Not when my life was falling apart thanks to the on-going divorce of my parents and the significant decrease in my grades. I had far worse things to deal with, so I didn’t need anything else to make me lose my mind.
“Yushin…” he let out a tired sigh and looked at me dearly. It was that kind of best friend look that you get before the huge life lesson comes. “Dance is about so much more than just moves after moves and beats after beats. It’s about exploring the deepest parts of your soul. Without exploring it, you can’t express your feelings, let it be joy, hatred or disappointment. The same goes when you dance with someone else. If you don’t know them, you can’t work with them,” he pronounced with the utmost care and his wide words cut into my soul a bit.
Honestly, I couldn’t agree more with what he had said. Dance was a way of expressing our feelings just like any other forms of art. For me, writing was the one which turned out to be the most accurate way to voice out my opinion but dance was also another compass of my emotions. Not until Soonyoung actually made me remember why I had initially enjoyed dance so much, did I actually realise why I found it so hard to indulge in it lately. Because I was afraid of my own feelings. I was terrified to present them to others. I didn’t want anyone to know about them since I always tried to prove that I was so strong and invincible. Yet, I wasn’t. I was a fragile human being and I wanted someone to figure that out. Just that someone still hadn’t come and I was trapped in an ice castle built up by my own worries.
“I know,” I whispered with wavering lips and immersed into toying with my fingers. I had already told him what was going on with my parents because he noticed my mood swings and rebellious behaviour but he couldn’t help me. He was there as a shoulder to lean on but I also had to learn how to overcome hardships on my own.
“I know you are going through a really hard time but that’s exactly why I think that Chanyeol and his usual optimism would do good to you,” Soonyoung added gently, letting the words sink in. Due to the fact that I was looking down at my own hands rather than his mesmerizing orbs and I got caught up in my worrisome thoughts, I didn’t even notice when he bid his goodbye and left the practice room. That meant that I was left alone. Or not really…
Luckily, there was no soul in sight, except Park Chanyeol. I wouldn’t want anyone else to hear the conversation that I had with my best friend. Not like they would know what kind of hardships I had to face lately but still, I needed a little more privacy in my life. It’s so upsetting that Soonyoung had to choose this period of my life to come up with the idea of having a group project. Dance should be a fun free-time activity but now… it seemed like it would turn into an irritating burden.
“So, I guess it means that we have to work together even more…” Chanyeol started vaguely and glanced around instead of looking into my eyes. I couldn’t really detect what was going on with him because he was uncharacteristically shy but hey, maybe he had a rough day! Or, worse than the fact that the happy virus Chanyeol had his first bad day during the semester was that he had heard something from our little chat with Soonyoung and he didn’t know how to act in order to avoid being too obvious. I seriously hoped it wasn’t the latter.
“Yep,” I nodded in agreement.
“So, I guess it also means that we have to see each other more often.”
“That’s right,” I bobbed my head again because I had no idea what else to do. I tried my best to keep my deadly serious face on but it was so hard when Chanyeol’s eyes suddenly lit up at the thought of us spending more time together. His Oreo-like eyes were immediately filled with blossoming joy and overflowing excitement, he became radiant in an instant. He glowed like a shooting star hovering on the pitch-black sky.
“Wow, I’m so happy! I can finally learn something from you!” he beamed excitedly while I directed a suspicious glare at him. He caught sight of the doubt written all over my face, so he made an attempt to clarify himself. “I mean, as far as I could see, you are probably the most passionate and most talented dancer in our team, so I’m sure you could teach me a thing or two. I know I have a lot to learn, so you would be an excellent teacher for me,” he giggled a bit at this part and I just stood there, cursing the whole universe (and especially my beloved best friend) for putting us in a pair. I predicted a serious outburst in the near future. There was no way that I could be with him without shouting his head off.
“Please take good care of me!” he bowed as a sign of respect but I didn’t know what it was for. I didn’t do anything to earn such a behaviour from him. I was seriously taken aback. My deadpan expression must have not leave an impact on him since he acted just like his usual self. Weird. Really weird. This guy could never get angry?
After pondering for a thought, I cleared my throat in an attempt to get his attention.
“How about we meet on Friday and watch some choreographies together, so that we can decide what we will choose?” I suggested with a mediocre friendly smile and his reaction couldn’t have been better. The guy clapped his hands and I swear he could have won the award for the widest grin ever. There was no other like him and his trademark grin.
“Amazing! I can’t wait to see you! I’ll be sure to check out some choreographies, even before our encounter, so that I can be prepared for Friday,” he promised gleefully and fished a post-it note out of his pocket. He looked at it for a mere second and then, he reached his hand out and motioned me to get it. “Here’s my number if you want to decide on the time and location. I’m usually available, so look at your schedule and call, okay?” he glanced at me and sputtered so rapidly that he had to catch his breath at the end. I assumed that he finally shut up for a minute and I had the chance to say anything but no, he casually started speaking again. “But now, I’ll have a band practice, so see you on Friday! Have a nice afternoon!” he hollered like he was in the 7th heaven and left the room while humming a funky song and dancing his way past the door.
I couldn’t quite process what I had just seen. Did Chanyeol really get on cloud 9 after realising that we would get to spend more time together? Like, what was wrong with him? Did he – perhaps – like me?
Oh, no way! Why would he? We hadn’t even talked to each other before Soonyoung’s dance classes. Oh no, that’s totally and absolutely impossible. There was no way that he liked me. No, not at all. Plus, why would I be appealing to him? There was nothing lovable about me. So why was he so hyped up?
Gosh, he was weird. Guys were weird.

Saturday had finally arrived. It was 6am when you woke up, but you were far too excited to go back to sleep. You tossed and turned for a little while, trying to convince your body to give you a few more minutes of rest just so you wouldn’t get tired early but it was no use. The last time you’d felt like this was when you were a kid and there was a big class field trip coming up, or on Christmas morning. That sense of child-like excitement was something you didn’t even realize you’d missed so much. As an adult waking up in the mornings was almost always shitty, but today you were so excited the idea of sleep didn’t even sound appealing anymore. God. Maybe you were just as whipped as him.
After giving in to your excitement you got up, and started making breakfast. You were worried that you’d be tired or groggy on the date so you made sure to add an extra shot of espresso to your morning latte. Falling asleep hadn’t been easy either. You kept thinking about all the different possibilities of where he might take you, and you had been especially distracted by Baekhyun’s promise of what would come after.
You had put a great deal of effort into looking nice for the club last week, but this week you didn’t even know where to start. Getting ready for a real date was very different than getting ready for the club. At the club you could cover yourself in glitter and body oil and do the most extra makeup looks one could imagine, and there wasn’t much to the outfits anyway. But what the hell were you supposed to do for a date where all you knew was that it was outside? You wanted to put in effort still, of course, but doing too much might be weird if it’s more of a casual thing. But Baekhyun wouldn’t just do something casual right? It would be something fancy for sure. But then what were you supposed to wear that was relatively fancy but worked for being outdoors?
You still wanted to be able to be comfortable so after some time and careful deliberation, you decided on a sundress and simple makeup. The sundress also had the advantage of allowing you to forego wearing a bra, and it was remarkably easy to remove. You had a feeling Baekhyun would appreciate that later on.
As the morning went on you tried your best to keep your mind occupied and prolong the process of getting ready in order to leave as little time as possible to get anxious, you knew as soon as you would get bored the nervousness would start. So you kept yourself busy.
3:00pm drew closer and closer and despite your best efforts you felt yourself becoming restless. You internally cursed Mia for being busy all day so she wouldn’t be there to help you not freak out.
Unfortunately you were ready by 2:00, leaving you an entire hour to mull over your thoughts as they made you more and more antsy.
After an hour of pacing around the house and checking your hair and makeup way too many times, you finally heard a knock on the door. You basically sprinted across the house at the sound.
To your relief Baekhyun wasn’t dressed very fancy, just a white short sleeved button down tucked into black shorts. But oh did the sight of him still make your heart flutter. His hair was perfectly styled and he just looked so good.
“Hi, you look beautiful,” He said as his eyes traveled up and down your body. “You ready to go?” You responded with a nod and threw your arms around him for a hug, which he happily returned. “Come on then.”
As you approached his Audi he opened the door for you to get in, and it somehow looked even fancier than you had remembered, although you had been slightly drunk when you’d last been in his car.
You stayed quiet, and Baekhyun put on some music as he pulled out and started driving. After a few minutes you heard him softly singing along, and you wondered why he didn’t tell you sooner that he could sing so well.
“You have a really nice voice.” You spoke softly, and he turned to look at you briefly.
“You think so? I was in a band in high school, and I think I was pretty good but I never kept up with it, although I do still like singing.”
“You should do it more if you like it, or you can at least sing to me anytime.”
He shot you a smile and continued singing along to the music, but now with more confidence.
Everything about him just seemed to get more and more perfect. No man had ever impressed you this much, had made you feel this lucky and special. It made you even more scared that you would do or say something that would mess everything up.
“Nervous?” He asked, noticing how quiet you were being.
“Yeah, I just, I don’t know. I don’t wanna make things weird and mess everything up.”
He placed a hand on your thigh, and once the car was stopped at a light his eyes met yours. “Don’t be, I promise there’s nothing you can do that will make today any less magical, the fact that I’m getting to take you out at all is enough for me.”
The warmth in the way he looked at you then helped melt away some of your worries. He was right of course, you knew he liked you too much for you to really be able to mess this up, but the mystery of where he was taking you made you worry nonetheless.
For about another 30 minutes Baekhyun drove the two of you further and further out of the city, until eventually he parked at the bottom of a large hill, seemingly in the middle of nowhere.
‘Um, Baekhyun, where are we? You’re not about to murder me are you?”
“No” he chucked, “definitely not, just follow me.”
He took your hand and started walking you up the hill until you were about halfway up and you could almost see to the other side.
“I need you to close your eyes.”
You did as you were told, and he kept guiding you by your hand as you blindly followed. Your heart rate had gone up significantly, still not having any clue what he had in store for you. Especially now that you were out here seemingly with nothing and nobody else around.
A few shaky steps later he told you to open your eyes, and with your heartbeat loudly thumping in your ears, you finally did.
What you saw had not been what you were expecting at all, though you hadn’t had a clue what to expect in the first place.
On the other side of the hill was an enormous balloon that was slowly being inflated.
He was taking you on a hot air balloon.
You could feel his eyes on you, waiting for some sort of reaction, but all you could do was stare in awe at the giant colorful mass in front of you. In your mind you started to think about how the hell he even pulled this off, how he even had the resources for something so extra, and for a first date. The longer you looked the more you felt the guilt start to set in. He had probably spent a ridiculous amount of time and money setting this up, and you had pestered him about the secret like some ungrateful child. Eventually the whole situation had tears brimming in your eyes from pure disbelief.
Baekhyun quickly took notice and pulled you forwards to face him.
“What’s wrong? Do you not like it? We can leave and do something else if-”
You grabbed his face and cut him off with a kiss, as you felt a tear escape.
“You’re fucking insane. I can’t believe this is what you were planning, how the hell did you even get a hot air balloon?” You said as you wiped away another tear, but the smile that had made its way onto your face let Baekhyun let out a sigh of relief.
“It wasn’t that big of a deal, really. Jongdae, I don’t know if you remember him from the club, but he’s got all kinds of connections and he did this for him and his wife last year so I got him to help me out.”
You still just shook your head in disbelief. “You’re crazy.”
“Crazy about you,” he grinned, “now come on.”
He grabbed your hand again and started pulling you towards the balloon again, which was now almost upright. As you got closer you noticed the picnic set and bottle of champagne that were sitting on a small table in the center of the basket, with a bench on either side for each of you to sit on.
The man who was operating the balloon gave the two of you a quick safety briefing before you stepped into the basket and he closed the small door behind you.
After a few moments you felt yourself lift off, and slowly the balloon lifted the two of you up towards the clouds.
“Um, Baekhyun?”
“Yes sweetheart?”
“What if I’m afraid of heights.”
“I’m right here,” He grabbed your hand between his own, “You know I won’t let anything bad happen to you. I’ve also been told it’s not so bad as long as you don’t look down.”
Luckily when you were seated you could only see the view off in the distance, so it wasn’t too frightening. As the balloon ascended further and further you started to realize how beautiful it was. The scenery from this angle was breathtaking and this high up in the sky there was a pleasant cool breeze as well.
You were torn out of your train of thought when you saw Baekhyun grab the bottle of champagne along with two glasses. He popped the cork out, which went flying out of the confines of the basket, plummeting down to earth.
“Oops.”
You giggled and he poured both of you a glass before reaching for the picnic basket. He pulled out two black boxes, and he opened yours and set it down in front of you revealing one of the most beautiful arrangements of sushi you’d ever seen.
“God you are unreal.” You breathed out as you examined the meal in front of you more closely.
“You like it?”
“Yes, of course, I love it. I love all this, I- I don’t even know what to say. Nobody’s ever done something like this for me before.”
“As long as you’re enjoying yourself.” He grinned back at you. "I wanted to do something that was different, something that you would hopefully be able to look back at later as a nice memory for us to share together. I know this technically is our first date but we’ve known each other a while so it really didn’t feel that way to me.”
The way he treated you, spoke to you, touched you, still seemed too good to be true. The question used to plague you, but now you wanted to know more out of the selfish need for validation more than anything else.
“Baekhyun, why do you like me so much? You’re around pretty girls all the time, why me?”
He let out a small breathy laugh, took a drink of his champagne and met your gaze. “You make me feel like a kid again.”
“What do you mean?”
“When I first saw you that night at your work, I remember thinking you were so sexy, so beautiful, so way out of my league, talking to you made me feel like a silly teenager with a crush on a girl who wouldn’t show him the light of day anyway. I hadn’t felt like that in almost a decade, but just in that one night you made me feel it again. That’s why I knew I had to come back, too. The more I talked to you the more I felt we actually had a connection too, although I didn’t think it was really real, I thought you were just good at talking to me, but it made me feel so good I didn’t really care. I never thought you’d end up actually liking me this much. Two weeks ago at the club when you were drunk and started to get more touchy with me I thought I was going insane, I couldn’t believe that you might actually be attracted to me like that. I’m 30 now and I spent basically all of my 20′s trying to please other people and make those around me happy, even if it meant I had to settle. I would let coworkers or my family set me up with people who seemed, I don’t know, proper. But it was never fun or exciting, always just one boring dinner date after the next, with people I felt nothing for. I regret it a lot now, but I’m so thankful I got to meet you, cause I feel like now thanks to you I can finally experience those parts of my youth that I missed out on.”
You were speechless. Your mind was in overdrive, trying to find some words that would live up to what he had said, to properly express what you were feeling, but they just didn’t exist. He stared at you as you stared back, desperately trying to get something to come out of your mouth but it felt impossible.
“Sorry, I know that was a lot at once, but I’ve wanted to tell you for a while now. Meeting you is the best thing that’s happened to me in a very long time.”
His words had you flustered and cheeks tinted pink. “Meeting you is the best thing that’s happened to me in a very long time too. Maybe ever.”
Baekhyun felt like his heart was about to burst. “When did you realize you liked me as more than just a customer?”
You had thought about this a lot, trying to decipher when in your own mind you had come to the realization, because you had fought it so vehemently.
“When I let you touch me. I never allowed anyone to do that before you, and I wouldn’t admit it to myself until later but it was that night.”
“Why were you scared to admit it to yourself?”
“I think I was still worried about letting you into my life, since I never do that with people from work. I don’t even hang out with the other girls there, I want to keep that part of my life separate. And once you were my professor I was even more scared because I knew in the back of my mind that I did like you but now there was even more to worry about because I didn’t want to get you in trouble. That still worries me a lot.”
“You don’t need to worry about that, I know what I’m getting myself into and I know the risks. I wouldn’t be serious about this if I wasn’t willing to take that risk. But I think things will end up fine. As long as nobody finds out while you’re my student, nothing can happen. We just have to be a bit careful. That’s actually another reason I chose this for the date, I didn’t want to risk somebody seeing us, as much as I would love to be able to show you off.”
“This is perfect, really. I can’t think of anything more magical.” You said as you took a bite of your sushi and looked around at the view surrounding you. “I’m definitely going to remember this for a long time.”
The date went on and the two of you laughed together while enjoying the view, the food, and the champagne. It really was magical, you felt like you were in your own little fairytale world up in the sky with him, you were convinced nothing could beat this feeling. The way Baekhyun spoke to you always made you feel so comfortable and he could make you laugh so easily. Whenever the two of you were together, things just felt right.
Eventually you finished your meals, and it was time to make your way back down to earth. As you watched the slow descent you started to think about what was coming next. The thoughts had plagued you the night before as well. You were getting closer and closer to Baekhyun finally having you, and now it was almost time.
You worried that you might disappoint him. Men tended to think that strippers were always the most wild, the most experienced in bed, but you were still quite shy and inexperienced. At your job you could easily fake confidence to strangers, but actually having sex with someone you cared for wasn’t something you’d done often. The thought made your palms sweat in anticipation as you and Baekhyun finally landed and got back to his car.
“Where do you want me to take you?” He was making sure you still wanted this, still wanted him.
“Take me home with you.”
He only nodded, and pulled out to get the both of you on your way.
The car ride back was silent. You could feel the tension hanging thick in the air, both of you had your minds on what was coming next. He placed his hand back on your thigh, but this time higher up, slightly pushing up the fabric of your sundress. The action alone was enough to make your breath uneven, and with the deafening silence surrounding you, you knew he noticed.
By the time he was pulling up to his place, your heart was hammering in your chest and you felt warm all over.
He stepped out of the car and came to your door to open it for you. When he extended a hand for you to hold as you stepped out your eyes met his. The look on his face was blank; completely unreadable. You wondered if he was feeling just as anxious as you, if he was just hiding it better. You knew with the way you looked up at him in that moment that he could see right through you, that he could see all the tension and desire that had been building within you clearly on your face.
Your thoughts were confirmed when a small smirk formed on his lips and he was soon pulling you through the entry way and into his home.
His house was beautiful. It wasn’t anything extremely flashy, though it felt comfortable and so much like him. The walls were lined with bookshelves, he had a large leather couch in his living room along with a marble coffee table, and everything was perfectly clean and well kept. It felt elegant and high-class but not in a way that was intimidating, it felt homely.
As lovely as it was, you were far more focused on the man occupying it now. Once you’d had a chance to take off your shoes and look around for a bit you felt Baekhyun’s hand on yours once again as he pulled you into his chest. He gazed down at you and you could see it in his eyes this time. Both of you had been waiting for this moment, him even longer than you. You saw the want, the lust, and you felt it as well. When you felt his lips finally press against your own, you knew there was no going back.
The kiss started slow, but you could tell he was holding back. His hands shook slightly as they made contact with your waist to pull you against him tighter, and you felt how his heart was racing when you placed a hand onto his chest. It was you who deepened the kiss, letting it become more and more lust driven as the both of you let yourselves give in to the feeling. His hands started to wander across your body. First they went down to your ass, giving it a squeeze before traveling upwards to grope your chest.
“Fuck, are you not wearing a bra?” He breathed out between kisses as he felt a nipple harden under his touch.
“Undress me and find out.”
Baekhyun didn’t respond, instead you felt his hands on the backs of your thighs, prompting you to jump, so you did, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and your legs around his waist.
You were surprised how easily he lifted you up and carried you into his bedroom. The whole time you clung on to him, leaving kisses on his neck as he walked you through the house.
When you entered his bedroom he sat down on the edge of his bed with you on his lap and continued to kiss you, now moving his way down to your neck. The marks he had left on you before had faded through time, and he missed the sight of them. Something about seeing marks on you, knowing he was the one who left them there, drove him crazy. Although he wasn’t able to go show you off publicly, he was still able to claim you as his own that way. His self control was quickly leaving him as he once again started to suck and bite at the smooth skin, leaving splotches of purple in his wake.
He pulled away and lifted you off his lap making you whine at first, but once you were standing before him between his parted legs his hands found the hem of your dress, and your heart rate picked up even more. He lifted the fabric slowly, and you allowed him to pull it all the way over your head before being discarded on his bedroom floor, leaving you standing in nothing but your lacy underwear.
Despite the fact that Baekhyun had seen you like this more times than you could count, you felt the need to cover yourself, crossing your arms over your chest. This felt so different from the club. Being naked there just felt natural, normal to you, it was the whole point of your job, and you didn’t care what the men there thought of you. But here and now, with nobody but you and Baekhyun and his eyes running up and down your body intently, you were shaking.
When he noticed you try and cover yourself, he quickly grabbed your arm and moved it aside. “Am I making you nervous? You don’t have to be so tense, you know how beautiful I think you are.” You felt your cheeks start to tingle as he grabbed you and laid you on his bed before instructing you to lay on your stomach. “Let me help you relax.”
His expert hands started to work the muscles in your back, and you realized he was right, you had been extremely tense. After a few seconds you let your eyes flutter closed and melted into the feeling of his hands massaging you. Your breathing and heart rate slowed down and you were overwhelmed with bliss as your muscles relaxed under his touches. Your arousal combined with the feeling made you feel high, and you couldn’t help but let out soft moans whenever he would work on a particularly stiff area.
Baekhyun felt like he was going insane. Your skin felt so soft and smooth beneath his palms as he caressed you, and the sounds you let out made him twitch beneath his shorts. You looked exquisite like this, bare aside from the barely-there lace thong and your backside on full display. He leaned down to kiss your neck, leaving you shuddering at the sensation of his breath on your ear. “Can I touch you?” he whispered, and all you could do was nod, your mind too foggy with lust to form real words.
His hand made its way down to your ass, touching you so close to where you wanted him, but not quite. “Let me hear you.”
You took a deep breath, and forced out the words, “Yes, Baekhyun, please.”
You felt him smile against the skin of your neck as he kept showering it with kisses, and his hand finally moved between your legs to where you needed him most. He made you gasp as he slowly began rubbing your clit through the thin lace of your underwear. “Turn around for me princess.”
Once you were facing him, and your eyes met, your arousal was amplified even further. He was laying on top of you now between your spread legs, and you felt annoyed at how much he was still wearing.
The first thing to go was his shirt, as you impatiently fumbled with the buttons before pulling it off of him completely. You knew that he was in pretty good shape but you still weren’t prepared when you finally saw him bare, and you knew that he saw how you stared by the pleased smirk on his face.
Next he moved off of you to remove his pants, leaving him in only his briefs. He soon moved back over you and resumed the motions of his hands between your legs, making you whine. He pulled you into a kiss so heart shattering you could feel yourself shaking with desire as he continued his ministrations. He was smothering you, pressed against you completely but you still wrapped your arms around his back in an effort to bring him even closer.
His kisses started to make their way down your jaw and towards your neck, and then slowly to your chest. He took one sensitive bud between his lips and your back arched off his mattress and your hands found his soft hair. He used his fingers to tease the other side as well, enjoying the feeling of your hands running through his hair and the soft sounds falling from your lips.
As much as Baekhyun had been looking forward to this, he still wanted to hear you beg for him, even if that meant having to be patient. Luckily, however, you were just as impatient as he was.
“I n-need more, please.” You gasped, the sensation of his hand on your pussy and his lips on your breasts edging you on without giving you the relief you craved.
“Say it again for me.”
“Baekhyun, please.”
“Mmmh,” he smiled down at you, “good girl.”
His kisses moved down to your ribcage and stomach, leaving marks on the way until he was hooking his fingers into the waistband or your underwear and dragging them down your legs. He soon positioned himself between your thighs, and you felt hyper aware of his eyes on the last part of you he’d had yet to see.
Instead of giving you what you wanted, Baekhyun started to kiss your inner thighs, leaving marks there as well, slowly creeping closer and closer to your waiting pussy. The feeling of him sucking and biting on the skin so close to where you wanted him was maddening. You let out another impatient whine, and finally, you felt his lips press against your clit. He was still taking his time, leaving soft kisses at first, but eventually he let his tongue lick a stripe all the way up your folds, making you shudder. You knew you wouldn’t last long with how tightly wound up you already were. When he started to quicken his motions, licking and sucking at your most sensitive spot, you started to crumble. Your hands abandoned his hair, instead opting to grab at the pillow behind you, out of fear that you might yank his hair out otherwise. A lewd moan slipped out from between your lips as your back arched and you started to move your hips against his face, prompting him to push you down to keep you in place. The feeling was overwhelming your senses and the only thoughts left in your mind were of his lips and tongue on you as you chased your high.
When you felt one of his slender fingers enter you, you knew you were gone. Only a few pumps later you felt the damn break and you moaned his name unabashedly and the pleasure flooded your body. Your vision went white and you felt yourself twitch against him as he kept licking and kissing you through your climax. Eventually he pulled away, and you went limp, closing your eyes and relaxing into the post-orgasmic haze.
“Don’t fall asleep sweetheart, I’m not done with you yet.”
A few moments later he was on top of you again, kissing you, only this time you could feel his hard member against you separated only by the fabric of his briefs. You reached down to try to pull the fabric away, but he stopped you before you could have any success. “So impatient.” He whispered before taking your hands and lacing them between his own and pinning them to the bed on either side of you as he continued to cover your face and neck with deep heated kisses.
You couldn’t stop whining and squirming beneath him, trying to get some sort of relief, but Baekhyun wouldn’t do anything until you asked for it. “What do you want baby?” He breathed in your ear and placed more kisses on the sensitive spot on the side of your neck, sending jolts of pleasure down your spine.
“I-I want you.”
“You want me to what?”
“I want you to fuck me, p-please.”
Baekhyun ginned and leaned back to admire you, relishing the way you were panting for him, chest heaving up and down, cheeks flushed. “So beautiful.”
He got up to remove his last remaining piece of clothing before finding his way back between your spread legs. One hand moved downwards and you felt two fingers enter you, testing your readiness. You moaned out at the intrusion, but just as quickly as they entered you his fingers left you as well. “So wet for me.” You heard him mutter.
When you finally felt his tip press against your folds you threw your head back and wrapped your legs around his waist in an effort to pull him further into you, but to no avail.
“Y/n, look at me.” He said as one of his hands cupped your face and you opened your eyes, immediately meeting his. “You ready?”
You nodded frantically and felt him position himself. The anticipation was killing you, but finally he brought his face down to yours to press a kiss to your lips as he sunk himself into you. He was larger than you had expected, making you gasp against his lips as he stretched you out. Once his length was fully inside you he waited for a moment to let you adjust, despite the urge to just let go and fuck you senseless. You opened your eyes and saw his squeezed shut, jaw clenched as he held himself back. Baekhyun had wanted this for so long, had waited for months and now that he finally had you underneath and around him, it felt too good to be true.
When he felt your hips shift to take him even deeper, he took it as a sign to start moving. He pulled out almost completely before sinking himself back into you, starting a slow and steady pace that had you whimpering and clutching at his shoulders, trying to bring him impossibly closer.
He continued to kiss you as he slowly fucked you, and you couldn’t help but think how sweet and romantic it still felt. As cheesy as it sounds, he wasn’t just fucking you, you felt like he was truly making love to you. You let your body melt into his movements, rolling your body up against his to push him even deeper inside of you with every thrust.
His lips traveled from yours down to your ear, “So, so, perfect, such a good girl for me.”
His words sent shockwaves down your spine and through your limbs, exciting you even further as you lost yourself to his expert thrusts. Your mind was blank, unable to form any coherent thoughts aside from how good he was making you feel. Every time he sank back into you you could feel him hit that special spot that had your eyes rolling to the back of your head and your toes curling.
You were enjoying his slow, calculated, movements, but the knot in the pit of your stomach was building and you knew you’d need more to be pushed over the edge.
“F-faster.” You breathed out in desperation.
Instead of giving you what you wanted Baekhyun stopped his movements completely, leaning up to look you in the eyes. “What was that sweetheart?”
“Faster, Baekhyun please.”
He smirked at your plea, “Since you asked so nicely.”
He resumed his motions, this time picking up the pace while one hand moved to knead and pinch at the sensitive skin of your breasts.
Your legs had wrapped themselves tightly around his waist and your hands were gripping onto his back so tightly it would probably leave marks. The sensation was completely overwhelming, and you were reduced to a whining, moaning mess beneath him as you felt your high getting close again. With him drilling in and out of you at a faster pace, and the ministrations of his hands on your chest, you knew the pressure would soon snap.
“Are you gonna cum for me baby?” He could tell by how tightly you were clenching around him, you were close.
All you could do was nod and let out a series of lewd noises, and the hand on your chest moved down to your clit. “Let go, let me feel you.”
A few seconds later you felt the pressure release, waves of euphoria flooding your body sending jolts of electricity through your limbs, making you twitch uncontrollably as he kept thrusting into you. You clamped down on him so tightly you heard him let out a pained grunt as he chased his high as well, losing control as his movements got less consistent.
“Fuck, no condom.”
You felt him start to pull out but locked your legs around him before he could do so, “I’m on the pill, please don’t stop.”
He let out a guttural moan and a few thrusts later he was emptying himself inside you, pressing his lips to yours once again, this time with so much force you felt yourself being pushed further into the mattress.
Once you had both come down from your highs he all but collapsed on top of you, and you unhooked your legs from his waist. Your arms stayed wrapped around him and the both of you laid there, sweating and panting against one another as you slowly came back to reality.
“Worth the wait?” He asked breathily.
“Fuck yes.”
He laughed, and you felt his chest vibrating on top of you. “Glad to hear it. I didn’t hurt you, did I?”
You shook your head before cupping his face and bringing it down to yours for a kiss. “It was perfect.”
He smiled back at you with that smile that felt like it could single handedly melt every glacier on earth and then some. Despite the fact that his weight was starting to make it difficult for you to breathe, you still whined when he pushed off the bed and slipped out of you to get the both of you cleaned up. He disappeared into the master bathroom, eventually returning with a wet washcloth to rid you of the sticky mess between your thighs.
Neither of you bothered putting any clothes on when he returned to bed and pulled you close, resting your head on his chest as the rest of your limbs tangled together under the sheets.
You lifted your head from his chest, meeting his eyes, “Can I stay the night?”
“Of course baby, get some rest.” He said and pressed a kiss to your forehead. You laid your head back down, closing your eyes.
You hummed at the feeling of his hands drawing circles on your bare back, and you dozed off to the sweet feeling and the steady sound of his heartbeat in your ear.
With Baekhyun, you felt like you had found your own little slice of heaven. This was the definition of bliss.

for @rhodeslabs‘ prompt: "OK I HAD AN IDEA A FEW DAYS AGO FOR SAMTONY THAT I THOUGHT YOU'D LOVE. Ok so teacher!Sam with single parent!Tony AU where Sam is the best teacher for Tony kid of your choice :)". major shout-out to @omg-just-peachy for the beta and @warmachinesocks for sensitivity reading!!
i’m super proud of this fic, i put a lot into it, so please consider reblogging, and leaving a comment if you liked it!!
//
There isn’t a specific rule against having opinions on your kid’s parents, but Sam knows that it’s not the done thing.
As a teacher, he may know a lot about his kids, but he learns next to nothing about the people raising them. He doesn’t know their work schedules, or what goes on in their private lives, hell - sometimes he doesn’t even know their names until he meets them at a PTA meeting. It’s bad form to judge people you don’t know, and it’s even worse to judge them through the very biased lens of their kids.
There’s exceptions of course, like the kinds of folks who leave bruises on their kids - but for the most part, passing judgement on parents isn’t standard procedure.
That doesn’t stop Sam from fiercely hating Lila Rhodes’ old man with every fiber of his being.
//
Sam never imagined himself as an elementary school teacher.
His father was Air Force right up until the day he died, just like his father before him, and there was never any question about whether Sam would follow in the family tradition. He enlisted right before college, because if he was going to give away the rest of his life to the military, the least they could do is pay for the next four years of his life. He picks an English degree, because it’s easy enough that he’ll actually be able to enjoy college and not find himself holed up in a library - but not too obscure that he can’t do anything with it after.
Not that Sam ever plans on using his degree, but his Ma mentioned that it was good to have a back-up plan. Just in case.
He graduates Summa Cum Laude on a Friday morning, and catches the evening train to Texas for Basic Military Training. There’s no break, no pause, no hesitation about who he’s going to be or what he’s going to do. He has his orders by the end of the year, and only has time to make a quick phone call to his sister to let her know where he’s gonna go and make her promise that she’ll tell the family before he’s on the first flight out.
In truth, Sam enlisted because it was the thing to do. There was never a time in his life when he considered another path, when he was allowed to consider another path. But now that he’s here, he finds that he loves it. All that bullshit they say about the military giving you a sense of purpose? It’s true.
Still, there’s an itch under his skin, something that keeps tugging at him that’s telling him he can do more, be more - so when it trickles down the pipeline that the Brass is looking for two flyboys to test out the experimental EXO flight-suits, Sam jumps at the chance.
It takes about six months for him to retrain as a paramedic, which is more than enough time for him to get to know his new partner, Riley Evans - but when Sam puts on the EXO-1 FALCON and kicks off the ground; everything in him settles.
It’s a stupid way to describe the feeling - but it feels like everything in his life has been leading up to this very moment, Sam in the sky with honest to god wings, Riley on his left, and nothing but the open sky around them.
There’s others in their unit - in total, there’s about 8 members of the 58th Squadron, but Sam knows that he and Riley are the best. The others are good, there’s no doubt about it, but they don’t come close to the kind of stats that Sam and Riley have.
It’s exhilarating work, saving people instead of killing them, and it makes the blood in Sam’s veins thrum. He can’t write home about it, because the 58th is shrouded under all sorts of covert operations and need-to-know missions, but he tries his best to let his family know that he’s happy.
That he's more than happy, that he’s found his purpose, he’s found himself a brother, that he finally gets what his father meant when he said there’s nothing like a life in the service, son.
It’s the best three years of his life, and then everything goes to shit.
It’s a routine training session, not even an operation, and Riley’s doing loop-de-loops around Sam and generally being a dumbass. The wings have been upgraded recently, more manoeuvrability and decreased weight, and Riley’s making sure he gets his promised full range of motion.
He shoots up, yelling something that gets lost in the wind, and Sam watches as he goes up, and up and up - and then just as abruptly, he goes down.
It takes a couple of seconds for Sam to realise that Riley isn’t slowing down, that he isn’t flying down - he’s falling down; and those precious seconds cost Riley his life.
Later, he’ll hear people say that it wasn’t his fault. That there was some sort of malfunction in the wings, that Riley went too high too fast and the shift in altitude caused something to break.
Sam knows the truth though.
He catches Riley’s arm just as Riley hits the ground, his head lolled back and body limp, and rushes him to the med-camp, screaming so loud his voice goes hoarse. They rush him inside, a large burly man stopping Sam from following, and Sam stands there for five hours, in the blazing sun, catching glimpses of the doctors working as the wind moves the tent.
He stands there, un-moving, until someone steps out of the tent, caked in blood, and solemnly tells Sam that they’re very sorry, and they did everything they could.
Sam files his discharge papers the very next day.
Sarah picks him up at the airport.
//
She’s waiting for him outside, leaning against her car and furiously texting someone, so Sam sees her before she sees him. He’s split between being grateful that he doesn’t have to hail a cab, because those are next to impossible to catch from Louis Armstrong Intl Airport to Delacroix and he does not feel like renting a car - and being annoyed because he thought he had a couple of hours before someone was going to start asking him questions.
“You didn’t have to do this y’know,” Sam says when he’s close enough, and Sarah looks up with wide eyes, expression softening into a smile when she sees him, “I could’ve caught myself a cab.”
“That’s what I told Mama, but you think she listened?” Sam steps into his sister’s arms to accept the proffered hug, “Her baby boy coming home on his own? Like the fully grown man he is? Perish the thought.”
“You know I’m her favourite,” Sam wiggles his eyebrows, throwing his bags into the trunk of the car and making his way over to the passenger side, “I don’t get why you gotta be so mad about it.”
“Trust me, everybody and their mother in Delacroix knows you’re our mother’s favourite. There’s a little shrine for you next to the cash register. Any day now she’s gonna start leaving out candles next to your photo like you’re the second Jesus.”
Sam rubs at his chin, “You know - there’s been a couple of girls, and guys who’ve made that mistake before.”
The only reason Sarah doesn’t reach out and slap him upside on his head is because she’s driving, and Sam’s never been more thankful for his sister’s hyper-focus on road safety. She packs a mean punch.
They fall into a companionable silence, the kind cultivated by knowing each other for their whole lives, but Sam knows she’s biting back her questions.
“It’s okay,” he says finally, because you have to rip the band-aid off fast to lessen the pain and all that jazz, “You can ask.”
“I don’t got nothing to ask,” Sarah says immediately, like it’s a rehearsed answer, “but Mama thinks you’ve been hiding some major injury from us. Like a missing leg or something.”
Sam huffs at the non-question, “I got all my limbs Sarah. All ten fingers and toes I promise.”
There’s a beat and then - “My partner died on my watch. Fell out of the sky during a training exercise. I couldn’t stay there after that.”
Sarah hums, “You know what you’re going to do now you’re back home?”
Sam shakes his head, even though Sarah isn’t looking at him, “I have no idea.”

Scarlet Moon
Tumblr media
Genre: Scarlet Heart Ryeo!AU, Time Travel!AU, Alternate History, Royalty!AU
Pairing: OC x EXO OT9
Summary:  This isn’t Gwen’s time. She was from the modern era, with technology and electricity. But during a solar eclipse, she’s transported back into a previous life in a time and place she does not know. Now, as the foreign daughter of a merchant living in a prince’s household, she must tread carefully, watch her back, and guard her heart. But with the princes locked in a battle over the throne, the chances of her making it out alive might disappear.
Part: 1 I 2 I 3
                                            ********
The paper sliced across the skin before any action could be taken to avoid it. A high pitched hiss followed by a short whine. The flap of skin that had been separated was being dyed red.
Gwen stuck her index finger in her mouth to sooth the stinging. It helped a little bit. Still sucking on the appendage, Gwen stumbled over to the supply closet and opened the thin metal doors with the other hand. She kept this feat up as she opened the first aid kit and pushed around the different types of bandages, trying to decide which one to use. The cut was right on the tip, right where you never want it to be. It was hard to get a band aid on that kind of cut. Eventually, she found a smaller version of a standard design and ripped the paper covering opening. She wrapped the band aid around her index finger before heading for her desk. It was back to the files that had injured her in the first place.
The pile was tall; by her standards, at least. Gwen had been dealing with it for the past hour. The dates on the files needed sorting, separating the ones could be sent to long-term storage. She almost gave out another whine, but she didn’t want the others to hear and start the relentless teasing. Her coworkers were quick and very witty.
It was a friendly floor. Everyone joked and played around without the fear of feelings being hurt. If Gwen didn’t have to do the actual work that came with the office space, she wouldn’t mind staying here forever. But dealing with these files and demanding customers and meeting quotas was not what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Not that Gwen knew exactly what it was that she did want to do. She’d tried a lot of things over the last few years in her slow going college years. Marketing, history, education - hell, she even took several makeup courses and skincare lessons that focused on natural resources. None of it stuck, none of it held her interest, though the information could be recalled if needed.
“You alright there, Gwen?”
Drudging up from the bowels of her thoughts, Gwen looked up at Kimberly, who had stopped at her desk on the way back from the printer.
“Yeah,” Gwen nodded with a sigh. “Just… ready for the week to be over.”
“Ain’t that the consensus,” Kimberly laughed.
“How are the dogs?” Gwen was seizing the opportunity to distract herself from work. Kimberly owned two dogs with opposite personalities. One was the well-mannered older brother, the other was the skittish, hyper younger brother. She loved to talk about them and there was never a shortage of entertaining stories.
Kimberly rolled her eyes. “Kurt is back to back to demanding his breakfast at five a.m. Oh, but Kent now does this thing where he walks backwards. Whenever he starts doing that, we’ll beep at him. You know, like the garbage trucks? Then he gets all shy and hides his head.”
Gwen couldn’t stop giggling at the thought. “Oh, the poor thing!”
“You’ll have to see it next time you come over.”
“I can’t wait.”
As Kimberly walked away, Gwen sighed. She didn’t get out too much and the humor that most of her socializing outside of work was with one of her coworkers wasn’t lost on her. Just another dart to throw at the board that was Gwen Sinclair.
It wasn’t like her life was a complete disaster. Really, it could have been worse. She could imagine a thousand different scenarios that she could be living right now that were worse off then her current situation. Truthfully, if glanced at from the outside, Gwen’s life was simply... mediocre. She was blessed with tolerable roommates, an okay job that provided a nice paycheck for a twenty-three-year-old who had yet to finish college. But… the loneliness was killing her and overall, she was craving for something more.
She was exhausted from obligation and responsibility. She wished to go back to the days where she read about adventure and intrigue and imagined some day living that out herself. After having those words in her hands, she felt empty in her reality. Somehow, each day felt even more draining.
With the end of another workday, Gwen packed up the files that still needed to be sorted, locked up her cabinets and tugged on her coat as she waved goodbye to Kimberly and the others. A few other coworkers were chatting excitedly about the solar eclipse happening in a few minutes. Gwen, however, was annoyed. Annoyed at the fact that all anyone - online or in person - could talk about was the solar eclipse, as if it was the only one that had ever been seen in this generation. When one person mentioned the eclipse, it was fine. When it was every post and every comment and every conversation, it felt a little ridiculous. Gwen couldn’t care less about the event. Getting home was her current priority. But escaping wasn’t that easy.
For the millionth time, Gwen rolled her eyes as she scrolled through the newsfeed, waiting for her car to warm up in the parking garage. The weather was cold and dreary, slowing down her progress on getting home. Puffs of steam escaped her lips in the below freezing temperature. Other employees hurried past the back of her car to get to their own tiny sanctuaries. An alert for a new email popped up at the top of the phone screen. From the quick scan of the notification, she saw that it was from her eastern history professor. He wanted to go over the latest paper from class. Oh, no. That was never a good sign.
Gwen huffed, threw her car into reverse, and pulled out of the parking space. First the papercut, now this.
Since all her classes were online, Gwen had the minor luxury to not be forced to talk to her professor face to face, which surely would have been humiliating. But it couldn’t be avoided completely. She’d email him back once she arrived home. Or maybe she’d put it off until tomorrow. Dealing with this was the last thing she wanted to do. Stress was already causing her skin to revert back to puberty, she didn’t need this as well.
Her phone rang and she struggled to answer it while carefully winding down the levels of the garage. It was Jaynie, the favorite of the roommates.
“Hey, Janie, what’s up?”
“Oh, nothing, I was just wondering if you were coming straight home today.”
Gwen smirked, knowing exactly where this was going.
Over the past several months, a bit of an obsession had developed with Korean dramas. The shows the two of them consumed were different from the same old, boring American television and there were years worth of stories to choose from. Currently, they were in the middle of another romantic comedy. While Gwen loved the storyline and was in a constant state of swoon, as soon as the credits started rolling, she was reminded how pathetically uninteresting her life was. But those sixty plus minutes of pure escapism made it all worth the crash that came afterwards.
Gwen tried to wait patiently in the line to leave the parking garage, but her frustration was getting the better of her. It was stop and go, stop and go, stop and go.
“I’m planning on it. That is, if people decide any day now to not drive idiotically.”
“Ugh, I had the same problem on my way home.”
Curious. Both of them worked in the downtown area. “How did you get home so fast?” Gwen asked.
“I got off a little early today.”
“Lucky.” Her accounting job often led to flexible hours. Gwen was jealous of that level of freedom.
The road was slick from the freezing rain. Weather like this brought out all the stupid drivers as if this wasn’t a yearly occurrence. She was careful to look both ways before exiting the garage and inching into the street. What she didn’t account for was the other emptying lot across the street. A large black SUV pulled out right at the same time, but went too fast, hitting the water that was slowly turning to ice on the asphalt.
With no time to react, the SUV slammed into the side of Gwen’s compact car. Glass from the driver’s side window shattered and sprayed her face. Her phone flew out of her hand. The crunch of metal hit her ears before she could fully process what had happened. With the force of the collision, her forehead slammed against the steering wheel before the airbag deployed. The sound of screams echoed around her, but the words were unintelligible. Slumped over in her seat, a shadow creeped over the scene. Through the slits of her barely open eyes, Gwen watched as the sun disappeared behind the moon. Then all went black.
                                           ********
The water was what brought her back. It filled her lungs and surrounded her on all sides. She flailed her limbs, desperate for traction that couldn’t be found. Her clothing weighed her down, the hems being pulled as if hands had gripped tight on them. She needed a miracle. And a miracle she got. Two hands held onto one of her wrists and pulled her to the surface.
She gasped for air as her rescuer struggled to bring her to shore. The cloth that covered her felt as if it weighed a hundred pounds, making it nearly impossible to move. Water made its way up her throat, spilling over her lips. Her lungs were finally clear. They took in as much oxygen as they were allowed, burning with each brath.
“Lady Gwen! Lady Gwen!”
A young girl blocked out the bright sun. She shook Gwen’s shoulders desperately.
Gwen’s brain processed that the girl was not speaking English, but… she could understand her. The girl’s damp, dark hair was pulled into halves on either side of her face held in place by wide red straps. She looked at Gwen with deep concern, like a lifelong friend. But Gwen was sure she had never seen this girl before in her life.
“My Lady, can you hear me?” she asked frantically.
“Who are you?” Gwen finally choked out.
That made the girl pause in her panic. “What?”
Slowly regaining her strength, Gwen pushed herself up to her knees. As her eyesight cleared, she took in her surroundings. Gone were the tall metal and glass buildings, traffic lights, and speeding cars of her modern home. Now all that surrounded her were trees and a sandy beach of a large, calm lake. In the distance, wooden houses with curved rooftops, painted in bright reds and greens dotted the horizon. The heaviness that weighed her down was a dress made of too many layers and of no western fashion that she’d ever experienced before.
Whispers bounced around the rocky shore. All the faces that were looking on with concern around were unfamiliar. Gwen grabbed the hair cascading down her back, but it was still the red she knew, darker from the dampness of being pulled out of the water but still her hair.
“Where am I?” she asked in a quiet, gasping voice.
“My Lady, don’t you remember?” The girl panicked. “You’re in Songak. Goryeo.”
“Goryeo?” Gwen screeched. All the minor details she could summon up of the country came rushing to the forefront of her mind. It was information overload and her brain couldn’t handle it. Her lungs tried desperately to keep up, breathing in as much air as they could, but her throat was closing up from the panic. The landscape blurred and she fell to the ground.
                                          ********
She was in a bed this time when she regained consciousness. The room was cold and dimly lit with soft, orange candlelight. A man, Caucasian unlike the others, sat beside the bed on a stool, worry etched into every facet of his face.
“Gwen, sweet, are you all right?”
English. He was speaking English. But that was a footnote of comfort to the bigger problem. She still didn’t know what had happened to her or how she got here or who these people were that seemed to know her. The man, who was about in his mid-forties with salt and pepper hair, smiled down at her, though his eyes were confused. “Gwen, does it hurt anywhere? Can you tell me if you hit your head?”
Gwen took a moment, to calm down and to evaluate what she was feeling physically. Her head didn’t hurt, nor did any other part of her body. Wordlessly, she shook her head. The man seemed relieved.
“Are you all right?” He asked again, a different meaning under the question this time. “Chae Ryung said you couldn’t remember her or that we were in Goryeo? Do you at least remember your papa?”
Gwen weighed the choices in her mind. There wasn’t a mirror around, but she started to wonder if she had taken the place of someone else. Someone who knew these strangers. She could say that she didn’t know any of them - the truth - but would they think her mad if she spilled too much? Perhaps she could say she remembered a few things. Like him, if he is this poor girl’s father. Why am I here? In this time?
Choosing to comprise with herself, she gave the smallest of nods. “Papa.” Sitting up, she pulled him into a hug and there was something comforting about his embrace. This body remembered him, at least.
“What happened?” she asked after she let go.
“Chae Ryung said that you’d wandered off again and she found you, you’d been the water a long time.” The man, Papa, sucked in a breath, his eyes beginning to water. His genuine concern over her wellbeing made Gwen choke up as well. “The doctor said you stopped breathing. That could explain your lost memories.”
Good. The excuse was already in her hands. That should make it easy enough to play along while being forgiven for any missteps. But they shouldn’t be in Goryeo. That didn’t make any sense, historically. If anything, they might have been in Joseon – late Joseon. Was this some sort of alternate timeline? Or maybe she hit her head really hard in the car crash and this is really all a dream from the stress of her paper and too much K-drama.
Yes. Too much K-drama.
That had to be the explanation. This was all a strange dream. Which meant, she could play along and not be afraid. She could ask questions and live out the day until she woke back up in her own time, most likely in a hospital with a bandage on her head and her mother fretting over her.
She glanced around the room, taking in the architecture that she had only ever seen in pictures. In person, it was even more stunning and intricate. This wasn’t an ordinary citizen’s home. Interesting. What else could her brain come up with? “Why are we in Goryeo?”
“Your father’s a merchant, remember?” He spoke slowly. Each word was deliberate, giving Gwen time to process. Good filler for her mind. “I made a large fortune here and planned on taking you back home, but… your mother is buried here. We couldn’t leave her behind.”
A wave of emotion hit out of nowhere. Though her mother was alive and well, it didn’t stop a tear from escaping. “Mama.”
Papa wiped it away with a coarse finger. Gwen gasped back, surprised by the realness of the touch. Her dreams were never this intricate. The blanket strone across her lap scrunched in her fingers. It was cold and soft… and very real.
She wasn't dreaming, was she?
Confused by her reaction, Papa paused for a moment before continuing his explanation. “The eighth prince is graciously letting us stay with him while we wait on the construction of our home to be complete.”
The eighth prince?
Panic grew tenfold. If this wasn’t a dream, then she was in very big trouble. If history told her one thing, it was that proximity to royalty was the most dangerous place to be. Gwen might possibly have been able to skate by if they were simply staying in some unknown village far from the capital, but they were in a prince’s home. Which meant they were in… Songak, the capital city, just like that girl – Chae Ryung – had said. Right under the King’s nose. Breathing became difficult again. Each one was shallow, barely letting in any oxygen. Gwen could feel her chest tighten and her vision blurred.
“Gwen!” Papa jumped up and tried to keep her straight to give her lungs as much room as possible. He switched to Korean as he called out over his shoulder, “Someone, get the doctor! Now!” Shuffling sounds echoed off the floor on the other side of the sliding door and then faded away.
A minute later, breathing no better, two men and a woman rushed inside along with Chae Ryung. The older man stepped in front of Papa and took his place. He pushed Gwen’s shoulders gently until she was lying down. Two cold fingers against her wrist checked her pulse. The other, much younger man stepped up to Papa.
“What happened?”
Papa frowned. “It seems she’s lost some of her memories. I was explaining why we were here when suddenly she had trouble breathing.” He stopped, struggling with his own breath. “I’m sorry we’ve become a burden to you, Your Highness.”
Gwen’s breathing was regaining strength and she was able to concentrate on the conversation. So that was the eighth prince. He was younger than she would have guessed, handsome even, if she had to focus on something other than her lack of breath.
“Do not think such a thing,” the Eighth Prince replied. “Your presence has greatly improved the household. Lady Gwen will get better with time.”
Papa bowed, obviously grateful at the response. He turned to the woman. “Lady Hae, may I enquire after your own health?”
“Today is a better day,” she smiled, though her pale, drained complexion said otherwise. “Please, don’t worry about me. Keep your thoughts for your daughter.”
The doctor released Gwen’s wrist, satisfied with the improvement of her pulse and breathing. He stood up.
“It was a mild panic attack,” the doctor said calmly to Papa. “If it happens again, she should lie down and focus on her breathing. The incident at the lake seems to have taken a toll on her body. She simply needs rest. In time, her memories and her body will recover.”
Gwen didn’t agree with that statement fully. This body might get better in time, but there was no way memories that didn’t exist would ever return. One by one, the occupants left the room until it was only Gwen and Papa remaining behind. Silence hung in the air. After a moment, Papa sat down on the stool and took Gwen’s hand.
“I was worried I had lost you,” he whispered.
Gwen’s eyes fell down to the blanket covering her legs. Things were becoming clearer to her now. This was not a dream and she was no longer Gwen Sinclair from the twenty-first century. Something must have happened. She didn’t know what exactly had occurred or what would happen now, but she was here. And little did this man – known only to her as “Papa” – know that he had indeed lost his daughter. The face may be the same, but the Gwen inside was different. She would try her best to be good to him, at least until she found a way to get back to her own family. She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.
                                          ********
The next morning, the doctor, along with the Eighth Prince, came back to check on Gwen. The doctor commented that her pulse was stronger and that she seemed well on the road to full health. However, he still insisted on keeping her on bedrest.
Bored with these same walls and too curious about her temporary home, Gwen sat up. If she was going to be here for a while, she might as well get to know it. “I’m fine. Please, don’t make me stay in here all day. The sun and air is good for you, isn’t it?”
The sudden rebelliousness against the doctor’s suggestion did not seem to sit well with any of them. Gwen gave Papa a pleading look. A father couldn’t resist those eyes. He sighed, turning to the doctor. “Perhaps, a little exercise in walking around the grounds would be all right?”
The doctor looked reluctant, but he agreed. “But she shouldn’t overexert herself.”
“Chae Ryung will stay with her,” the Eighth prince ordered. “If you’ll please excuse me, I must meet with my brothers.” He bowed and left, followed by the doctor.
Having heard her name from the hallway, Chae Ryung shuffled quickly inside and over to Gwen, holding out her arms for the latter to balance on as she slid off of the bed. “Are you sure you want to go outside?”
Gwen nodded. “Yes. Perhaps seeing more of this place will help jog my memory.”
Chae Ryung tilted her head. “How can your memory jog?”
Gwen snorted, both at Chae Ryung’s confusion and at herself for the slip of the modern phrase. “Sorry, I just meant, maybe my memories will come back.”
“Oh.” The look on her face was enough to make Gwen laugh again.
Gwen scolded herself internally. She had to be more careful with her words. Every step was one on thin ice. She couldn’t change who she was, not completely, but she would have to pull back. Chae Ryung, however, felt safe, like a shelter from the rain. With her, Gwen could find answers that might be dangerous to seek elsewhere. Straightening her shoulders, Gwen smiled broadly and took her newest friend’s hand. Chase Ryung grinned brightly at her and guided her out of the room.

Step by step [pt.7]
Chapters: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7
Genre: fluff, comedy, romcom, haters to lovers
Main Characters: Park Chanyeol; Kang Yushin (OC); Kwon Soonyoung; Byun Baekhyun; Kim Jongdae; Do Kyungsoo
Setting: college AU; art college AU; dance class AU; college band AU
„We take a dance class together and our next routine calls for partnership, and we got put togeth−STop standing on my foot!” AU
Tumblr media
Even if I wished to slow down time, I couldn’t really do anything. That Monday arrived sooner than I had wanted. We were waiting for Soonyoung to arrive and announce that Chanyeol and I would like to show the others what we were working on for more than a month.
I didn’t know how Chanyeol felt but I was actually way more nervous than I would have admitted. I was never anxious, to be honest. Not even during exam periods, not even when I took my CSATs, not even before my graduation. Soonyoung liked to tease me about having the stress level of a dead cockroach when it came to important things that make most people freak out. Yet, I was still on the edge this time. Gosh, what did really change?
“We will do great, Yushin,” Chanyeol put a sympathetic hand on my shoulder and my legs became weaker by his touch. He looked me in the eyes and his stare seemed to pierce into my soul. I knew I was totally lost but to be frank with you, I didn’t want to be found. “We’ve practiced a lot and if someone messes up the choreography that would be me and not you.”
“You are not making me feel better,” I chuckled half-heartedly, secretly glancing at the door, hoping that Soonyoung would arrive.
“Okay, then I’ll put it this way,” he chortled but became serious in the next second. “Neither of us would mess up the dance because you are a great dancer and I had the best teacher ever, so I’m not going to make any mistakes either. I’m not going to let you down,” he whispered quietly rather than shouting it into the crazy hustle-bustle in the room, making my little heart pound crazier than ever. He said it like it was a secret that only we were able to share and I tried to embrace his words like they were my source of warmth and reassurance. His support was constant like Venus that never actually left the sky and shone at its brightest right after the sunset and it was the first that rose in the morning just before the Sun.
My legs turned into jelly after his soothing words and I almost opened my mouth to respond but Soonyoung chose this exact moment to arrive and begin his class. He immediately started babbling about the importance of pair work (just like he did when any of the pairs gave a performance) and let us present what we had been preparing.
I squealed inside. The pressure was rising, pulsing mad in my bloodstreams. It was now or never. It wasn’t like we were dancing in front of the president of Korea but still, I was shaking like a leaf falling from the tree. Nevertheless, Chanyeol was right, we had practiced a lot and I couldn’t let him down either. It was his time to shine and show how significantly he had improved.
Before the first beat, someone gently pressed my hand and I felt like I had been electrocuted the second Chanyeol touched me. I couldn’t bring myself to look at him because I knew I would be more emotional than ever, so I waited for the song to start and muttered a pray for the Gods above to help us survive this performance in one piece.
The first few seconds were a bit confusing, I was certain that I had forgotten everything. However, as the song went on, I became more and more confident and it wasn’t even that hard to enjoy myself. With the second song and its impressive choreography, I loosened up for good and the whole experience became a blur after that. I made little snapshots of our dance in my mind, so that I could remember for every single moment. It was truly a joy to be able to dance with him, without worrying, without reluctance and without barriers. I wish I had trusted him earlier to show more sides of me and let him break down my walls a bit earlier but I was actually thankful that he even made an attempt to get to know me.
The dance ended sooner than I had expected and I found myself sweeping Chanyeol into a big bear hug after our performance had ended.
“You see?” Soonyoung clapped his hands in excitement and his usual teasing tone was the only thing that could snap me back to my senses. Oh my gosh, did I really hug Park Chanyeol? No way! I must have been under the effect of some medicine. Odd behaviour was one of the symptoms of an inappropriately used drug, right?
I didn’t know how to back out of this awkward situation, so I immediately took a step back but Soonyoung couldn’t shut his mouth. Of course, he had to continue on rambling nonsense.
“I’ve told you that you really have to know your partner in order to show a good performance. And as you can see, this is how close you can get with your partner after one and a half month,” he pointed at us, his brassy grin plastered on his face.
I felt a need to facepalm because I was so devastatingly embarrassed and Soonyoung was so devastatingly annoying that I just wanted to curl up and die. I didn’t even dare to look at Chanyeol, he must have felt more uncomfortable than me. After all, I was the one who gave him a bone-breaking huge instead of him giving me one. Honestly, I was so damn proud of him and I wanted to demonstrate it somehow but I was never good with words, so body language was my only option. Well… I obviously got a bit carried away.
When the laughs and the ‘they are so cute together’ comments died away, Soonyoung took the lead and taught all of us how to dance in synchronization, not only in pairs but in little groups as well. The rest of the lesson was undeniably fun but I couldn’t enjoy it whole-heartedly because a spike of shame never left my side in the next approximately one hour.
However, as even your worst nightmare eventually ends, Soonyoung soon called it a day and dismissed his pupils. I was ready to walk up to him and tell him off for teasing his best friend after such an embarrassing situation and humiliating me in front of his group when Chanyeol literally jumped in front of me, making me stop dead in my tracks. From the corner of my eyes, I caught sight of an approving wink from my best friend but he didn’t let time for me to respond, he swiftly left the room. It was only Chanyeol and me, just like after Soonyoung had announced that we would have to work together to perform a choreography in front of the rest of the group.
My cheeks flamed up at the sight of the boy and my heart was already hammering away rapidly thanks to the intimacy of our previous situation, small wonder why I didn’t want to talk to him right after our little incident. Well, it was intentional but not intentional at the same time, so it was better to define it as an incident rather than something else. It was an act out of overflowing happiness, nothing else.
“Can I hug you, too?” Chanyeol inquired abruptly while I almost choked on my saliva.
“What?” I squeaked in return. I found heat crawling up my skin at the thought of being in his arms again.
“I asked if I could hug you, too.”
“No,” I retorted fervently because I had no idea whether he was being serious or he was merely being his usual carefree and childish self. If he wanted to hug me, I wanted it to be for real, not something that he felt he was being forced to do because he wanted to emulate me.
“Why not?” he pouted woefully.
I opened my mouth to say something but clasped it close the moment it dawned on me that I didn’t know how to voice out my feelings. Telling him that I actually liked him and wait, what? Like him? What on Earth, Kang Yushin? You really said that? Okay, let’s figure it out then. I didn’t hate him, that was certain. I was used to his whole-hearted, deep laugh so much that I didn’t want a day to pass by without hearing him laugh. I was actually convinced that his smile was beyond words but what I really liked about him was his cute little dimples when he smiled like an angel. Oh and wait! His eyes were also one of my favourites; I was sure that I could see another universe in those big doe eyes. Oh man, yes, and his touch! He had a quite rough skin due to playing his drums for hours every single day but his touch was so gentle yet so searing like he was afraid to touch me but something in his guts still motivated him to do so.
So I actually liked him? Okay, let’s face it. I did. But who knew if he liked me back? It was impossible to tell with guys like him.
“Because I don’t know whether you would take it seriously or not,” I whimpered, my voice trailing off at the end. Although I tried my best, a quiver in my voice was unmistakable.
Chanyeol’s jaw literally dropped upon hearing my answer and it must have been a comical sight if we hadn’t been in such a confusing situation. His expression was unfathomable and it drove me crazy because it seemed that he didn’t know it either. We merely stood there, waiting for the other to tell something and my nerves were already beginning to fray.
I don’t know how much time had passed when I had enough and decided to leave the room. As I was walking towards the door, Chanyeol ran after me and gently grabbed my elbow, spinning me around to face him. When he made sure that I had no intention of scampering away, he let out an aghast sigh and started speaking.
“Look, I know I’m not the most serious guy on Earth but my intention is serious.”
“Which is?” I asked reluctantly, with no hint of annoyance or mockery this time. I was hoping that he would say something similar to my internal monologue a minute ago but I shouldn’t have had my hopes up.
“I need to tell you something first,” he announced and although all I wanted was to hear whether he liked me or not, I nodded my head in submission. He shot a thankful smile at me but he could have put me on the world’s fastest rollercoaster, it would have left the same dozen of excitement and anxiety.
He cleared his throat and finally started his speech. The more he talked, the more I couldn’t believe my ears.
“I had a crush on you since we were at Jinyoung’s birthday party and yes, it’s been more than two years now but I never had the courage to tell you. I saw you dancing for the first time there and I immediately knew that I was hooked. I did everything to find out your name, I bought all the campus magazines that you’ve contributed to and I even visited places that you recommended. I always hoped that we would meet at one of those museums or exhibitions because otherwise it seemed silly to start a conversation with you,” he stopped for a moment and let out another sigh. I was already at the verge of fainting but he continued on.
“I don’t know if you know Min Yoongi but we attend almost all the lectures together and he told me one day that one of his friends got put up with you for a dance project and he’s the shyest guy he had ever met, so he didn’t know how that friend would survive this challenge. You can easily guess that this friend was Jungkook and even though I had previously said that my sudden interest in dancing and Jungkook’s absence was a mere coincidence, it wasn’t. There was actually no bet with the guys, it was all because of this sudden opportunity which I took without hesitation. I asked Jungkook if I could replace him and he was more than willing to give in. I’m surprised that Soonyoung hasn’t blurted it out yet because he also knew about my little plan.”
My tongue was completely tied. The words were stuck in my throat while my heart was doing its best to leave my ribcage. I was beyond surprised, I was literally out of my mind. Despite the fact that I really wanted to hear something like this from Chanyeol, I would never assume that he joined Soonyoung’s dance classes on purpose, nor did I know that my one and only best friend was actually a part of his plan. I should have sensed his sudden interest in my love life because he had never tried to give me relationship advices before.
“So I’m absolutely serious and I know I made a fool out of myself for trying to be your dance partner when I obviously dance like a dying whale and I know it sounds silly but since I met you, I wrote more songs than ever but I did it all because I like spending time with you and I really like you,” he summed it up and glanced around the room in an attempt to hide his bewilderment.
I honestly didn’t know how to react since my mind was preoccupied with crazily tangled thoughts but before giving it much thought, I found myself saying:
“Don’t you dare to call yourself a fool for being my dance partner!” I reprimanded Chanyeol like he was a badly behaved kid and the sudden change in my mood apparently startled him. He averted his eyes back to me and I saw that his russet-brown orbs were filled with doubt. It seemed that I needed to clarify myself before he would start crying. “No boy has ever done something like this for me before. I just wish I had known earlier that you wanted to get to know me. I wouldn’t bite if you wanted to talk to me. Okay, I can be cold sometimes but you know what I mean,” I giggled sheepishly but it still didn’t set him at ease.
“I’m actually thankful that you were my dance partner. You taught me how to enjoy dancing again and I’m not sure anyone else would have been capable of that,” I admitted unashamedly because he was really an anchor when I wanted nothing else but to sail away from all of my problems. He fought against the storm with me and provided a shelter for me. Thanks to him, I realised that there were people who cared about me and I wasn’t alone with my problems. He was such a good listener and being the mood maker he was, he could literally brighten up my days.
“Really?”
“Really,” I nodded with probably my widest smile ever. “And yes, you can hug me now,” I added cheekily but all I wanted was to be in his masculine arms and listen to the sound of his heartbeat. My favourite sound of all time.
It didn’t take him long to seize the opportunity and I soon found myself in one of his award-winning hugs. I assumed that it was probably the start for us but to be honest, I didn’t really mind because I wanted more of those hugs. And in general, I wanted more.

chapter 2
The final bell rang throughout the room, signalling the end of the last subject for the day. However, your professor seems to have a different schedule as he continued discussing the human anatomy all over again. You stared at his powerpoint presentation, trying to keep awake and take notes of what he was saying.
You can hear some of your schoolmates already buzzing and getting ready to pack their things. After ten minutes, your professor finally ended his lecture, but not before leaving a hundred pages of lessons to review for a short quiz on the next meeting. You just let out a sigh as you hear groans of complaints among your schoolmates.
"Do you guys wanna hang out?" You hear someone ask around. "I hear that there is a newly opened pizza place near the bookstore by the street!"
"Yeah! I want to go!"
"I'm in for the food!"
"As long as Irene would go, I will too!"
You didn't bother looking at the crowd forming at the back of the room, and continued packing your things. You never went to any group gatherings anyway, not that they made efforts to invite you in any. You were invisible in their eyes.
You stood up from your seat and quickly went out of the room without a sound. It was just half of the first week of your 3rd year college life, and it was the same as ever. As soon as you saw the lockers by the hallway, you brought out your key. Since it was nearing weekend, you'll start bringing home your books to read.
"You skipped practice on the last two days, man!"
"I was busy—"
"Busy with what?! What is more important than practice?!"
"Sex, man. I'm betting he did—"
"Shut up, Sehun."
That was the last thing you heard before your locker door hit you in the face.
You groaned in pain as you pushed the small locker door away from your sight, looking down at your feet. You cursed in your mind while your hand caressed your reddening cheek.
"Oh shit! I'm so sorry!" You felt a hand touching your shoulder, urging you to turn around. You just waved your other hand without bothering to look back at the person. "I'm so sorry, miss. I-I wasn't looking where I was going—"
"It's okay." You said, just so he will stop talking to you. You flinched as you became aware of his warm slender fingers on top of your shoulder. You moved away from him, closing your locker quickly after getting your books. You locked your locker and silently nodded your head at his direction, being respectful enough to acknowledge his presence and apology.
You held onto your left cheek with a frown as you waited for the bus in the waiting shed. You heard noisy teenagers hanging around the shed, making your eyebrow furrow in annoyance. Your eyes couldn't stop looking at them as you waited.
You saw how much fun they were having.
Their smiles, laughs, and teasings that they share within their circle of friends, you kind of envy their bond. You looked away as you gripped on the straps of your backpack tighter.
How fun.
"I'm home." You said as you entered your apartment. You hear the radio's noise in the kitchen, making you smile. You quickly placed your shoes on the rack, and running to the kitchen. As you saw your roommate by the stove, you grinned in delight.
"My girl is home!" She exclaimed as she noticed your presence by the counter. She's in her baby blue apron with her hair in a messy bun.
"Jiwon-ah." You greeted her as you sat on the tall stool chair by the kitchen island. "You got out of campus early today, huh?"
"Yep! Our prof for the last class was absent, and she just sent us an email for the upcoming quiz." Jiwon shrugged as she looked at the ramen she was cooking. When you met her two years ago, you didn't expect she will be a bubbly person. She's so pretty to the point you got intimidated of her dashing looks. You were not prepared to have someone bright as her to be your roommate in college. "I cannot accept the fact that we're having quizzes in the first week!"
But she was more than her looks. She was talkative, never letting you hear a pin dropping on the floor with her loud voice. She was also outgoing, becoming friends with people from different courses. You won't be surprised if she knows everyone in the campus. Even Irene's group knows her despite being in a different building.
"Me too." You frowned as you remember the hundred pages you need to read this weekend. You might start reading them later if there are no disturbances like Jiwon's loud voice. You were so deep into your thoughts that you didn't notice Jiwon was done cooking and was already beside you as she place a bowl of ramen in front of you.
"Ooh, what the hell happened to your cheek, girl?" She pointed at your cheek, where a small bruise was forming. Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion before realizing that that locker door has probably damaged your face more than you thought it did. "Did someone punch you?!"
"No, no. It's an accident." You placed your hand on your cheek and tried pressing it, only to grunt in pain. "Damn, that locker door is harder than it seems."
"What? Someone hit you with a locker door?!"
"It's an accident, Jiwon." You shook your head as you sighed, picking up the chopsticks on your bowl to start eating. "Thanks for cooking ramen."
"Who was it?" She continued questioning you, picking her chopsticks up as well. "Did that person apologize?"
"I don't know who was it. Yes, he did."
"Well, that's good. If he didn't, I would have to find him and kick him where it hurts the most." Jiwon smirked as she munched on her noodles. You just chuckled at her protectiveness and ignored her incoming threats to anyone who tries to hurt her roommate. "I don't like how your batchmates do not want to get close to you. Like you're one of the best people I've ever met, and they're just treating you as an invisible woman."
You felt better chatting with your best friend slash roommate. She was the only one who appreciated you, and treated you as her own sister. She may be clingy most of the time, but she makes you feel accepted in this new environment you are living in.
"Oh! I forgot to ask you if you're interested in working part-time in my aunt's new coffee shop?"
Your eyes widened as you turned to her, full of excitement and curiosity. Jiwon glanced at you and laughed as she shook her head.
"Why did I even ask, you love coffee." She said with a smile, making you nod in agreement.
"I would love to work in a coffee shop, Jiwon!" You responded after you slurped down the soup from your bowl. You worked at the library last year, until you got too busy with school and ended up quitting in the summer. "I was about to seek for part-time jobs around the campus. Thank goodness you asked me."
"Welp, I'm your fairy godmother! It's my responsibility to make your life easier!"
You spent the whole night listening to your best friend's stories and gossips, which you aren't really interested but chose to listen. You enjoyed her company anyway. You looked at your biology book resting on the table in front of you, deciding that you can start reading tomorrow.
"Are you going on Friday?" Jiwon asked you, making you look back at her in confusion. She raised her eyebrows in disbelief. "Of course you don't know about the first football game of the term!"
"Oh, that. What?"
"You're not going as usual? Oh come on! Come with me on Friday!" She pouted while shaking your arm in persuasion. "I'll introduce you to nicer people!"
"I've met your friends, you know. They're not that interested to be—"
"Not Krystal and her entourage! I said nicer people!" She emphasized, her eyes widening as if to prove a point. "I'm certain you will like them!"
"Will they like me though?" You rebutted her, raising your eyebrow. Jiwon huffed, shoulders deflating in defeat. She looks so sad that you almost gave in her favor.
"I'll buy you two corn dogs, extra large fries, and mocha frappe if you go—"
"I will go." You said in a heartbeat as you heard food involved in the deal. "You should have said earlier that you'll provide those."
"You bitch." She laughed as she pinched your cheek. "EXO will be playing, so we need to get there as early as possible or else we won't find any seats."
"EXO?" You mumbled as you tried remembering what or who was that. You just remember hearing the name a year ago when the music festival arrived.
"You don't know them too?!" Your best friend shrieked as she looked at you in disbelief for the nth time tonight. "You've been in the university for two damn years and you don't know them?!"
"Stop screaming, our neighbors will totally report us tomorrow." You rolled your eyes at her. "I've heard of them before, I just can't recall who are they."
Jiwon just sighed in dismay as she leaned her back on the bean bag. You looked at her in expectation, waiting for her long ass explanation. And that is what you get.
"EXO is a group of hot guys, coming from the Engineering, Advertising, Art, and Music departments. Most of them are scholars, and not only they are intelligent, they are also talented. Some participates in dance competitions internationally, and some in band festivals. If not performing arts, intellectual competitions are what they join into!" Jiwon narrated like a storyteller, hands going up in the air as she enthusiastically emphasize her admiration to the said people.
You nodded as you listened to her introduction. Sounds like a popular group.
"They also represent our university's football team!" She exclaimed excitedly, looking at you with a smile. "That's why they are so well-known everywhere. They are just so amazing!"
"I see." You replied to her long explanation, with a serious face as if you were indeed interested in the so-called group of hot guys.
"That's all you can say?"
You shrugged at her dismayed question. She scoffed at your indifference.
"Well, we still need to get on the field real early!"
"Then you need to buy my food as soon as you get out of your class then." You smiled innocently at her frowning face. "I'll head to the field as early as I can and save us seats."
"Hmp, fine!"
You are so looking forward to that most anticipated game.
Really.

The more time we spent together, the more I let myself loosen up beside Chanyeol.
It was so easy to talk to him about almost everything, small wonder why I soon found myself talking to him about the divorce of my parents. He was the second person (the first was Soonyoung) to say that he was proud of me for staying strong and not letting myself fall into the depths of self-hatred and blaming myself for the whole situation to cope with their divorce. I didn’t know that he knew about such horrific things! I initially thought that he lived in a perfect pink bubble world and he didn’t let any negativity in. I couldn’t have been more wrong. He saw the hidden part of the world, the one that we wouldn’t like to involve in our every-day conversations but he decided to choose positivity and happiness over groom and hopelessness. He didn’t have an easy life either – he used to be bullied in elementary school for his baby cheeks and rounded glasses and he had a difficult time adjusting to the constant mockery – but he used song writing and playing the drums as a way to handle his overflowing emotions.
Clearly, I realised that he wasn’t even that annoying. He was more like… you know, a bit eccentric. By this I mean that he could talk a bit too much and about things that I didn’t even get - mostly about music which I wasn’t an expert of –, therefore he could have been speaking Chinese, I wouldn’t have understood him better. It was a whole new world to me. Yet, as much as I was fond of writing, he adored music like no one else. It was a part of him; it was the blood that was rushing through his veins; it was his crazily beating heart that couldn’t be pacified; it was the sultry fire that was glistening in his russet-brown eyes. It was his soul, his mind and his body.
He was a form of music. That kind that started as something unexpected; it was a fragile voice that echoed through an abandoned desert. As time went by, it turned into something rather magical; like the flowers blooming after the most terrific storm of the year that left nothing else but the mere flower itself. Then, it became a bit mysterious; it was like he was trying to dissolve into the shadows and become one with darkness. Yet again, I realised that it was only the facade. There was so much more to him and a lifetime of listening to the melody of his life wouldn’t be sufficient to fully get to know him.
He was a phenomena himself. Not only did I witness when he started screaming at the top of his lungs when he got a move wrong for the tenth time already but I was also there when he burst into laughter a moment later and started turning on his side on the floor, his childish giggle filling the slightly awkward silence of the room. He was predictably unpredictable. Whenever I thought that I knew what he was going to say, how he was going to react, he did the opposite. There was so much sides to him, it was a challenge to keep up with all of them. Whereas, I was eager to get to know them all.
Additionally, with his new sides, his dance skills also improved a lot. I was flabbergasted when he showed up at our practice one day and perfectly memorised his parts which we had discussed the day before, without making any mistakes. I repeat – without any mistakes!
“You know, you are not even that bad of a dancer,” I admitted casually while I let myself slide down to sit on the floor, Chanyeol following my actions.
It was the last practice before our performance on Monday and I think it was time I admitted that I had changed my mind concerning his dance skills.
“Oh really?” he raised his eyebrows in question, his eyes filled with doubt. I may have said things to him that I didn’t think through but why would I joke about his dance skills? It was the first time that I really complimented him for his efforts and although I had initially reckoned that it would be hard to tell him how I felt, it didn’t turn out as embarrassing as I thought that it would be.
“Thanks,” he shot me a gentle yet tired smile. His weariness was written all over his face thanks to those three hours that we had spent practising. It was definitely a tiring one but we were closer than ever to the day of our performance.
“I’ve never asked you but it always crossed my mind when I saw you dancing,” I started reluctantly while I was trying to gather up my courage to ask the question. The question that I had been dying to ask since day 1. The question whose answer would probably even piqued Soonyoung’s curiosity. “How did you end up at Soonyoung’s classes? You didn’t replace Jungkook because he has some business to do, did you?”
“Oh no, it was a mere coincidence.” he stretched the back of his neck. A sheepish smile was slowly forming on his thick lips that he liked to bite so much, especially while playing the drums. Oh no, there was no way that I had spent numerous hours listening to their songs and watching their videos which they had uploaded on their band’s site. Never. I didn’t even know whether they had a website or not.
“I wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to see if I can do it. On top of that, I lost a bet to Baekhyun and this was his way of revenge. He gave me this challenge and I had to accept it. That’s why I didn’t start coming to Soonyoung’s classes right away but only in the middle of October,” he explained unashamedly and stole a curious glance at me. I looked back at him and immediately found myself smiling.
“Hah, what a challenge!” I snorted. I never got boys but honestly, what kind of girl could really understand the other gender? I think it was just like how boys couldn’t get our girlish things. Furthermore, with friends like the “I-was-a-woman-in-my-previous-life” Baekhyun, the one and only Jongdae who always looked like he was high on something and the living teenage angst Kyungsoo, I didn’t even know why I was surprised to learn about their little bet.
A moment of silence filled the room and I was actually thankful for the momentary silence. It felt more and more natural to talk to him but it wasn’t always like this. In the beginning, we were quite okay with having a conversation but we had no clue how to break the awkward atmosphere after our little quarrels.
Even so, with more hours spent together and more topics discussed, it became easier and easier to not feel awkward while merely sitting next to each other like this, quite short of breath due to the hours behind us, getting lost in the cacophony of our heartbeats and breaths.
“And you?” Chanyeol’s hushed voice sent pleasant shivers down my spine. “Why did you start dancing? It seems to me that you really enjoy it.”
“Yeah, I do,” I nodded and let out a thick, shaking breath. My story wasn’t extraordinary, neither coincidental. The way I see it, it was more like the butterfly effect when one action followed another, the first leading to the last with consistency and unpredictability. “Although I’m not a professional and I would never wish to be one, it’s the only activity that makes me feel confident. I’m quite body-conscious and I always had troubles with my body image but dancing helped me to overcome that fear of mine. Instead of falling into self-hate, I wanted to find something that would help be accept how I look and when I first saw Soonyoung dancing, the first word that came to mind was confident. He was really confident and I envied him. I wondered how I could be like him?” I came to a halt to gasp for some air. My lungs demanded for oxygen and it felt undeniably refreshing to both breathe again properly and share my story with him.
To be honest, the words felt quite unfamiliar after such a long time. It must have been ages since I had last spoken about my body image issues with someone. It seemed so long when I used to struggle with my body and my thoughts. Some days I still found it hard to accept the girl I saw in the mirror but life was about so much more than that, right? It was about constantly working towards a bigger goal and whenever you reached another milestone, there was the next one waiting for you and the next and so on. Life was a series of lessons, leaving us with only two choices; either we accept the message of the lessons and practice what we had learned or we don’t take it seriously and destroy ourselves. I opted for the first version.
“In the end, Soonyoung managed to convince me to go to a dance class with him and after that, there was no turning back,” I finished my story as a nostalgic smile was creeping onto my face.
I could still vividly remember for that iconic dance class. I would never forget Soonyoung’s face when he realised that I didn’t lie to him when I said that I had learned the choreography for Catch me if you can by Girls’ Generation. Not to mention the time when it finally dawned on him that I wasn’t that boyish girl anymore who wore baggy clothes all the time and enjoyed singing some hardcore rap parts in her favourite boy bands’ songs. I was a grown-up, feminine young lady who actually enjoyed learning some badass choreos.
“Why would anyone like you deal with body image issues?” he flung his arms in the air, apparently unable to understand why I was so body-conscious. People could never tell when they looked at me that I used to deal with poor self-esteem when I was younger but I guess that’s why we have a hard time realising that we need help. Others wouldn’t assume that we keep our worries and emotions to ourselves until we burst like a volcano and spread everything with burning lava. “You are so pretty,” he declared naturally, making my cheeks heat up like a freaking fireplace. I tried my best to hide my tomato-red face but to no avail. His smug smirk proved that I was doing a ridiculously bad job.
“Ah, shut up!” I nudged his shoulder to motion him to get back to his senses and regain my usual self. He raised his arms in defeat and made an attempt to suppress his amused grin.
“But I’m serious,” he huffed slightly but the corners of his lips started to raise. I knew he wasn’t mad but I really sucked at receiving compliments. My only solution was ignoring them as much as possible but with Chanyeol looking at me with his russet-brown eyes that kept unexplored planets in their depths, it was hard to swallow back what I really wanted to say.
“Alright, let’s go back to our performance, shall we?” I clapped my hands and swiftly stood up, leaving him with no choice but to emulate me.
I turned away, pretending that I was looking for my water bottle but I was actually trying to hide my face. I knew my cheeks were burning but I didn’t know why. I wasn’t that mushy kind of girl and I had already heard guys telling me that I was pretty but I was sure that this time, I probably resembled a burning torch.
Oh man, guys could really make girls feel all sorts of inexplicable emotions. Chanyeol was no exception. He could make me blush, he could make me smile and he could make my heart beat faster, just by looking at his puppy face or feeling his heat beside my body when we were too close to each other during practice.
Maybe I didn’t want the day of our performance to come so fast. Maybe I wanted to spend more time with my dance partner.
