There isn’t a specific rule against having opinions on your kid’s parents, but Sam knows that it’s not the done thing.

As a teacher, he may know a lot about his kids, but he learns next to nothing about the people raising them. He doesn’t know their work schedules, or what goes on in their private lives, hell - sometimes he doesn’t even know their names until he meets them at a PTA meeting. It’s bad form to judge people you don’t know, and it’s even worse to judge them through the very biased lens of their kids.

There’s exceptions of course, like the kinds of folks who leave bruises on their kids - but for the most part, passing judgement on parents isn’t standard procedure.

That doesn’t stop Sam from fiercely hating Lila Rhodes’ old man with every fiber of his being.

Sam never imagined himself as an elementary school teacher.

His father was Air Force right up until the day he died, just like his father before him, and there was never any question about whether Sam would follow in the family tradition. He enlisted right before college, because if he was going to give away the rest of his life to the military, the least they could do is pay for the next four years of his life. He picks an English degree, because it’s easy enough that he’ll actually be able to enjoy college and not find himself holed up in a library - but not too obscure that he can’t do anything with it after.

Not that Sam ever plans on using his degree, but his Ma mentioned that it was good to have a back-up plan. Just in case.

He graduates Summa Cum Laude on a Friday morning, and catches the evening train to Texas for Basic Military Training. There’s no break, no pause, no hesitation about who he’s going to be or what he’s going to do. He has his orders by the end of the year, and only has time to make a quick phone call to his sister to let her know where he’s gonna go and make her promise that she’ll tell the family before he’s on the first flight out.

In truth, Sam enlisted because it was the thing to do. There was never a time in his life when he considered another path, when he was allowed to consider another path. But now that he’s here, he finds that he loves it. All that bullshit they say about the military giving you a sense of purpose? It’s true.

Still, there’s an itch under his skin, something that keeps tugging at him that’s telling him he can do more, be more - so when it trickles down the pipeline that the Brass is looking for two flyboys to test out the experimental EXO flight-suits, Sam jumps at the chance.

It takes about six months for him to retrain as a paramedic, which is more than enough time for him to get to know his new partner, Riley Evans - but when Sam puts on the EXO-1 FALCON and kicks off the ground; everything in him settles.

It’s a stupid way to describe the feeling - but it feels like everything in his life has been leading up to this very moment, Sam in the sky with honest to god wings, Riley on his left, and nothing but the open sky around them.

There’s others in their unit - in total, there’s about 8 members of the 58th Squadron, but Sam knows that he and Riley are the best. The others are good, there’s no doubt about it, but they don’t come close to the kind of stats that Sam and Riley have.

It’s exhilarating work, saving people instead of killing them, and it makes the blood in Sam’s veins thrum. He can’t write home about it, because the 58th is shrouded under all sorts of covert operations and need-to-know missions, but he tries his best to let his family know that he’s happy.

That he's more than happy, that he’s found his purpose, he’s found himself a brother, that he finally gets what his father meant when he said there’s nothing like a life in the service, son.

It’s the best three years of his life, and then everything goes to shit.

It’s a routine training session, not even an operation, and Riley’s doing loop-de-loops around Sam and generally being a dumbass. The wings have been upgraded recently, more manoeuvrability and decreased weight, and Riley’s making sure he gets his promised full range of motion.

He shoots up, yelling something that gets lost in the wind, and Sam watches as he goes up, and up and up - and then just as abruptly, he goes down.

It takes a couple of seconds for Sam to realise that Riley isn’t slowing down, that he isn’t flying down - he’s falling down; and those precious seconds cost Riley his life.

Later, he’ll hear people say that it wasn’t his fault. That there was some sort of malfunction in the wings, that Riley went too high too fast and the shift in altitude caused something to break.

Sam knows the truth though.

He catches Riley’s arm just as Riley hits the ground, his head lolled back and body limp, and rushes him to the med-camp, screaming so loud his voice goes hoarse. They rush him inside, a large burly man stopping Sam from following, and Sam stands there for five hours, in the blazing sun, catching glimpses of the doctors working as the wind moves the tent.

He stands there, un-moving, until someone steps out of the tent, caked in blood, and solemnly tells Sam that they’re very sorry, and they did everything they could.

Sam files his discharge papers the very next day.

Sarah picks him up at the airport.

She’s waiting for him outside, leaning against her car and furiously texting someone, so Sam sees her before she sees him. He’s split between being grateful that he doesn’t have to hail a cab, because those are next to impossible to catch from Louis Armstrong Intl Airport to Delacroix and he does not feel like renting a car - and being annoyed because he thought he had a couple of hours before someone was going to start asking him questions.

“You didn’t have to do this y’know,” Sam says when he’s close enough, and Sarah looks up with wide eyes, expression softening into a smile when she sees him, “I could’ve caught myself a cab.”

“That’s what I told Mama, but you think she listened?” Sam steps into his sister’s arms to accept the proffered hug, “Her baby boy coming home on his own? Like the fully grown man he is? Perish the thought.”

“You know I’m her favourite,” Sam wiggles his eyebrows, throwing his bags into the trunk of the car and making his way over to the passenger side, “I don’t get why you gotta be so mad about it.”

“Trust me, everybody and their mother in Delacroix knows you’re our mother’s favourite. There’s a little shrine for you next to the cash register. Any day now she’s gonna start leaving out candles next to your photo like you’re the second Jesus.”

Sam rubs at his chin, “You know - there’s been a couple of girls, and guys who’ve made that mistake before.”

The only reason Sarah doesn’t reach out and slap him upside on his head is because she’s driving, and Sam’s never been more thankful for his sister’s hyper-focus on road safety. She packs a mean punch.

They fall into a companionable silence, the kind cultivated by knowing each other for their whole lives, but Sam knows she’s biting back her questions.

“It’s okay,” he says finally, because you have to rip the band-aid off fast to lessen the pain and all that jazz, “You can ask.”

“I don’t got nothing to ask,” Sarah says immediately, like it’s a rehearsed answer, “but Mama thinks you’ve been hiding some major injury from us. Like a missing leg or something.”

Sam huffs at the non-question, “I got all my limbs Sarah. All ten fingers and toes I promise.”

There’s a beat and then - “My partner died on my watch. Fell out of the sky during a training exercise. I couldn’t stay there after that.”

Sarah hums, “You know what you’re going to do now you’re back home?”

Sam shakes his head, even though Sarah isn’t looking at him, “I have no idea.”

James Rhodes Headcanons

Rhodey is a lightweight drinker. He might not have been one in college, when he had time to go to parties and drink every weekend, but he certainly became one after enlisting. His job entailed lots of long nights and years away from home and alcohol, so Rhodey only ever got to drink when he got leave. Two beers in and he has a headache, he’s giggly and ready to sky dive off a plane. Tony absolutely takes advantage of it, which is why Rhodey always needs a little persuation before drinking with him.

Rhodey is also very affectionate when he’s drunk. He’d drape himself all over you like a cat and start saying things he secretly thinks. Small little compliments like how Tony had expressive eyes or how Sam had a pretty smile.

Ever since he was little, Rhodey loved superheroes. He liked fictional ones, like Superman, and real ones, like Captain America. He also loved flying. Which is why Rhodey wanted to be a pilot growing up, and then why he loved being War Machine so much. His superhero obsession is also why he absolutely thought way too much about why Steve should’ve jumped from the plane.

Rhodey is a master at board games. Jeanette, who is a very sore loser, hates him for it, but Tony is delighted by finally finding a worthy opponent. He changes his mind after a few years, when he still hasn’t beat Rhodey at any game. Rhodey is so good at it, that he finds obscure board games online and orders them, and once he even made his own board game (he’s not so good at that). 

Rhodey has different nickname for every environment. With his family its Jimmy, with his ROTC and Air-Force friends its Jim or Rhodes, and with Tony (and SI) its Rhodey (and a myriad of other nicknames, of course). But if anyone calls him James, under anything less than professional, he’d never talk to that person again. 

Rhodey’s hobby is designing planes. Sometimes he does it absentmindedly, just sketching, his fingers used to the shape, but sometimes he designs it seriously. He makes every kind of plane: fighter jets, passenger planes, crop duster planes, etc. He doesn’t really show it to anyone, besides his family, Pepper and maybe Tony, but he was delighted when Lila has taken the same interest and he could teach her his knowledge. 

Pepper and him bond over a shared interests in drawing. Sure, Rhodey draws sketches and Pepper paints abstract drawings, but it’s a common ground they both have and they like sharing resources and inspiration pictures.

Rhodey knew he was gay since he was a kid. He didn’t much mind it at first, thinking it didn’t matter anyway because his career was the most important thing. As Rhodey grew up and enlisted, it became harder to ignore crushes or just indulge fantasies no strings attached. So he started to convince himself he didn’t have a crush, and even if he did, he couldn’t be in a relationship. Eventually, Rhodey repressed all his loves and crushes and convinced himself a relationship with him was unattainable. 

Rhodey keeps all of his old letters from when he first went to tours, and from years after of course. He reads them when he needs a little pick me up. Not to mention he likes to pull sections of the letters and read them to his family and Tony, just to embarrass them. 

Rhodey is very much a  Philadelphian mama’s boy. He loathes all the army food and loves all his mama’s dishes. He loves his hometown and the neighbourhood he grew up in. The things that calms him the most are his mama’s hugs and gentle soothing words. Rhodey loves traveling, has longed to do it growing up, but Philly is the one place that feels like home.

Rhodey knows how to braid braids and paint nail polish. He grew up with a younger sister, and has a niece, so of course he’d know. Lila doesn’t really like nail polish, but she loves how much time and care Rhodey puts into braiding her hair. Tony is the opposite; nothing much to braid really, but he loves it when Rhodey paints his nails. Not that he’d ever admit it.

Rhodey loved ferrets as a kid. Yes, you heard that right. It’s a very popular pet in Pennsylvania, and everyone wanted one when he was a kid. It sort of caught onto him.  He changed his mind pretty quickly, when Tony bought him a ferret on his birthday, and the pet immediately bit him. Now, all he wants is a fish. Fish are low maintenance and they won’t hurt you. 

Rhodey loves a uniform. He fell in love with it in choir, when he felt like dressing like everyone else made him fit in. He felt like he finally had friends when he dressed in the same clothes in them. Like he had people who understood him. Not to mention, it saved Rhodey from his terrible sense of fashion (”no, Rhodey, give up, just wear a t-shirt and jeans please.”). He feels the same way when he wears his dress blues, when he gained ranks, felt like he had people with him and people like him. War Machine is also a uniform of sorts. But this time, it reminds him that he’s a superhero, that he’s special and that Tony has his back. 

Rhodey would never admit it but he loves cheesy rom-coms. His sister used to have a phase of watching them, but while she grew out of it, Rhodey found he missed the habit of sitting on the sofa and being filled with hope. He knows they’re stupid. He knows there’s no way his best friend could love him back. It’s his guilty pleasure, alright? 

Rhodey doesn’t follow any sports, except the MIT football team and tennis. The first one because it’s his and Tony’s tradition, and because Lila wanted to join the girl’s football team, and the second one because… Rhodey likes the uniform, and the colors, and the hypnotising movements of the ball, and the quietness of the crowd. His whole life is filled with chaos, and it’s just calming to him. Relaxing. Also, you can’t go wrong polo shirts. 

Rhodey is so smart. Like blow-away-your-teachers, win-every-science-fair, person-in-the-yearbook-most-likely-to-win-a-noble-prize smart. He’s a prodigy child in MIT at 16. Tony thought Rhodey was the first genius close to his age, when they saw each other in MIT. Rhodey knows he’s not a genius. But that doesn’t mean he can’t hack over Tony’s codes sometimes to mess with JARVIS. It doesn’t mean he isn’t astonishingly smart. 

Rhodey is a tech genius, but he doesn’t trust tech like at all. Between a choice of a GPS and a map, he’d choose a map. He prefers to count on himself. He knows the dangers of technology and what people would do for money. 

Rhodey volunteers at soup kitchens. He’s sort of a regular in one, every time when he comes back from leave, he visits it.  Everyone there knows his name, and they laugh at his stories. Rhodey doesn’t tell anyone. Well, maybe Tony knows, because he keeps donating money to the soup kitchen. 

Sam and Rhodey are really good friends. They don’t really agree on much but they don’t mind. It’s nice to keep each other on their toes. Rhodey and Sam regularly roast Steve and Tony too. They have a running gag of making up random Air-Force Things™️ to confuse their army and civilian friends.

Note: I have altered Marinette's age for this fanfic. She's a year younger than in the show. So, when she gets the Ladybug Miraculous, Marinette is only 12. In Befana, Marinette was turning 13 instead of 14.

Super Genius Marinette Ch. 1

So, I read Marinette: Iron Man Rising & Ladybug: Young Avenger by @unmaskedagain and total loved them. Then I got the idea, what if Marinette was Ironman’s kid. I know there’s been a lot of BioDad ideas for Marinette and I wanted to try this one out. Hope you guys love it!

I stare down at my classmates over the top of my iPad. They were all chatting away about random things they would be doing during the summer and their pool party celebration after final exams. There were a few pointed jabs at me by Alya and Lila, but I simply ignored them. They’d gotten worse this year after it was revealed that I supposedly forced Lila to lie about having a lying disease to get out my expulsion the year previous. I simply rolled my eyes at their naivety. Coming next fall, this entire class would crash and burn. 

My class had a lot of potential, however, they never really did anything with it. It didn’t help that this entire room ran itself off of my scheduling, reminders, and fundraising due to my class representative job. I was still kind of angry at myself for taking the job. I was already juggling a lot of work. Being Ladybug was time-consuming enough, adding on class representative duties put me behind in my real studies. That was one secret I had been harboring for years. I am a child genius and the daughter of the famous Tony Stark.

When my mother was young she had a brief one night stand with my biological father, Tony Stark, while on vacation. When my mother was just a few months pregnant, she met my Papa at baking class. They started dating and ended up opening a store together. When I was just 1, they married. Now, shortly after my birth, my Mama called my Dad to inform him that she was pregnant. A DNA test was done on the sly. My father never revealed that he had a child and my existence was kept a secret. So secret that only my Father, Mama, Papa, Aunt Pepper, Uncle Rhodes, Uncle Happy, my Papa’s parents, and my Mama’s parents knew about it. A small circle that somehow remained small. 

My father sent birthday gifts, called and video chatted, and he even attended a ceremony in Paris when I was a child. However, all three of my parents wanted me to have a normal life. It was slightly more difficult when I managed to trick-out a computer at four and fix household appliances at six. They ended up sending me to a specialized école élémentarie. I was put on a fast-tracked schedule that had a lot of self-studying and online learning. If I kept to the schedule, I would graduate from Lycée at 14 and started University at 15. A few months younger than my father. 

I, however, insisted on attending normal school to keep up with kids my age. I didn’t care as much about starting university at an unusual age. I did skip a grade, however, as I couldn’t hide all of my knowledge. So, I started at a regular école élémentarie. Classes were general alright, I enjoyed the literature classes and speed through the science and math classes. I mostly did my advanced work in class. As long as I turned in my homework and wasn’t bothering people, my teachers didn’t care. Chloe did put a bit of a damper on friendships, as no one wanted to anger the Mayor’s daughter. However, I still enjoyed regular school. 

When I started Collége Françoise Dupont, at age 10, I was already through the first year of the materials. It got easier with me being in Madame Bustier’s class. She was a nice teacher but didn’t control her classroom very well. For two years I managed to do my advanced work without her ever knowing. Frankly, her relaxed environment made it easier for me to work ahead. When I started my third year of Collége, I had done all of the materials already. A year and a ½ of studying in a year’s worth of time. 

Of course, this is when it got messy. I received the Ladybug miraculous and made some real friends, or so I thought. All of this was fun and great, but it made working ahead more difficult. Adding on Ladybug work and class representative work made it possible for me to only do a year’s worth of Lycée work in a year. 

Father called, a little worried, but I easily calmed him down. I was still three years ahead of everyone else, plus adding on all of my design work and my class representative duties would make my college application even better. Less studying gave me more time to do independent work. My pseudonym, Maria, created several green energy products, three different popular apps, and an extremely lightweight, flame-resistant, and shrapnel resistant line for firefighters. I was a success, and I would continue to be, despite all of Lila’s mechanisms. Either way, I was in the last few hours of class with these idiots. Starting next fall, I’d be attending MIT in Massachusetts. 

I had a small, personal graduation from my specialized Lycée a week ago. I sent my transcripts from both my specialized Lycée and one from Lycée Françoise Dupont. I did get Madame Mandeleiev to help me get video footage of Lila framing me for my expulsion and write a letter explaining the issue of my rescinded expulsion on my record. A brief phone call and an email containing the Ladyblog link told MIT everything they needed to know about my classroom. I did get asked why I stayed. Truthfully, I wanted to see this through. After Lila’s return in the second half of my Troisieme year, I started collecting evidence against the Collége and Lycée Françoise Dupont for enabling bullies, extreme favoritism, and incompetence. 

“Marinette?” I glance up from my iPad to see Madame Bustier looking at me. The entire class is now looking at me. Lila is smirking next to Bustier. “Can you apologize to Lila?”

I raise one eyebrow. “What am I apologizing to Lila about?”

“For your rude and threatening words earlier, before class started, in the locker room.” Madame Buster speaks to me as if I am a small child. She’d done that to me for a while because I skipped a year. She seemed to think that because I was a year younger than everyone else, I need to be treated like a child. After Lila’s arrival, she became even more condescending. 

I glance at the clock really quickly. 2 minutes until the bell and just a few hours until I would be flying first class to New York. “I didn’t go to the locker room this morning Madame Bustier.”

Mrs. Bustier sighs. Lila smirks before sobbing loudly. It sounded horrible and fake, like some cheap amateur actress. “Oh, Marinette. I didn’t want to make a big deal about this. I just wanted you to apologize for your mean words and for stealing my iPad-I mean, oops!” Lila’s shirk is back, but the entire class misses it to turn to glare at me. Then the comments started.

“Dude, stealing is not cool!”

“Stop being such a bully!”

“I thought we could trust you!”

“I can’t believe this! I used to think you were such a good person.”

“Just give Lila back the iPad, Marinette.”

I roll my eyes, putting the iPad in my hand into my bag. “File a report.”

There’s silence. “What?” Lila looks at me in confusion. 

“File a report. If I really stole this iPad from you, go to the police. Have them do an investigation.” The bell rings above us and I stand from my seat. Everyone is still in the same spots, too stunted by my declaration to do anything. 

I walk down the stairs until I’m in front of Mrs. Bustier. I pull out a file and hand it to her. “I’m unable to be Class Representative next year. This is everything I need to hand over for my successor. All of the money earned for the Graduation trip in two years is in the class savings account. I left a page detailing how much was earned at each event this year.”

I move to leave the room, but Mrs. Bustier steps in front of me. “Marinette, we talked about this. The Marinette of the world, setting an example.” 

I met Mrs. Bustier’s eyes with a flat look. “Mrs. Bustier, I have a flight to catch, please move.”

“Marinette!” She sighs, but I had already moved around her.

Chaos starts to erupt behind me in the classroom. Students yelling about me being childish, some saying Lila should press charges, and others saying that they should just enjoy me being gone. Either way, it was no longer my problem. I didn’t have time for stupid people.

A one-shot idea that I'm trying to make into a book.

*This is a random book based on my imagination of 'Wonder what would've happened if Tony had a friend who didn't turn their back on him (No offense to Rhodey and Pepper, but they did do that at least once).* This is also after I've watched all of the Iron man movies and Avenger movies including Civil War, Infinity War, and End Game.

Eira (pronounced Air-ah or like Era) Roman is a 35-year-old woman who was taken by an unknown organization. She was injected with unknown substances and can appear before a man she doesn't know. Although she isn't exactly physically there, they can keep each other company.

Yea, this description sucks but the book might be better?????

The first chapter is the One-shot I wrote! The book actually begins in the second chapter!

Then he gets a visit from a not so dead God and the God has other plans. He needs Tony for his future plans to work. So, Loki helps the genius out. And it might be the best thing that happened to Tony, like ever.

Tony got the Arc reactor after Siberia. SM:HC- didn't happen but Tony and Peter still got closer. T'challa told the UN that he has the rogues. Peter is 17. Harley is 15.

Clint and Laura are finally having a wedding! Everyone returns their RSVPs in record time- that may be because only close family was invited, or maybe because this was a long time coming. Unfortunately for one genius and his prodigy, misunderstanding who got an invitation requires quick thinking on their part when they're asked for a date's name.

 ** I bring this up in the fic, but Civil War happened on a much smaller scale, Steve, Wanda, Pietro, and Clint are the only 2 people who didn't sign the accords at the end of the day, but there was no huge fight- just disagreements. Bucky was sent to Wakanda and Shuri and Tony helped him with his arm and brain. Once he returned Sam was assigned to help him with recovery. winteriron winter stocking exchange fill for the prompt: Tall beefy broody vampire Bucky is soft for his human boyfriend Tony

this fic is special to me for multiple reasons. for one, it’s my first ever actual participation in a fandom event, which i’m quite proud of because i usually chicken out when it comes to fandom events. secondly, i managed to completely steer away from angst and keep this completely cutesy and fluffy, which is kinda remarkable for me. third, but definitely not last, vampire AUs have a very special place in my heart and i finally managed to write one that im proud of!

2. and now my heart’s been stolen - samtony, mcu, post tws, pre-slash to slash, 5k, G

Post TWS - Sam finds out that HYDRA bombed his apartment in retaliation for helping Captain America, and accepts Tony Stark's generous offer to move into Avengers Tower in New York. He slots in effortlessly with the team, except for one glaring problem: Tony Stark hates him.

It makes Sam's growing crush on the genius extremely inconvenient.

samtony is actually a ship that’s super special to me, but ive only ever written tiny drabble on tumblr for, so this fic was a big surprise for me. it was one of those fics that just poured out of me, continuously, and i didn't even know i could write that much until i wrote that much, and i was rly lucky that it was well received and that this was the fic that introduced some people to samtony!

3. the memories bring back (you) - buckytony, mcu, soulmates AU, 1000 lives ‘verse 6.5k, T

“Mission: Extraction and Execution. Primary Target: Super-soldier serum,” the Asset intones, “Secondary Target: Howard Stark. Collateral: Maria Stark.”

Tony inhales a sharp breath, exhaling in a splutter like he’s being choked, but the Handler pays him no mind, so the Asset continues.

“Serum extracted at 0200 hours. Secondary target neutralised. Collateral neutralised. Return to base at 0500 hours. Mission successful.”

The Handler nods, once at the Asset, and another time, more firmly, at Tony.

“Like I said,” the Handler says to Tony, “you never know what you have until it’s gone.” Tony doesn’t seem to be paying the Handler any mind, instead glaring at the Asset, and doesn’t even notice when the Handler leaves the room. There’s an outwardly calm that’s overtaken Tony that it is stark contrast to the way he was shivering with anger, and yet, the Asset does not think he is actually calm, not in the slightest.

“You killed my mother, you son of a bitch,” Tony finally murmurs, “I’m gonna rip your heart out and feed it to you.”

i feel kinda guilty adding this knowing that there’s a sequel that ive promised that i haven’t delivered on yet (im working on it guys i really am) but i really got the opportunity to delve into bucky’s psyche here a bit and flesh out little details i had dropped into 1000 lives so i rly enjoyed writing it

4. begin again - samtony, modern AU, single dad tony, teacher sam, pre-slash to slash, 9.9k, G

Sam never imagined himself as an elementary school teacher.

(Or, after the Air Force, after Riley, Sam becomes a teacher. And then he meets Lila Rhodes. And Lila Rhodes' Dad. And Stuff Happens.)

this fic is another fic that just snuck up on me, because i really just was going to write a tiny drabble to answer the prompt, but basically what happened was i got rly worked up about racism. the thing is right, in modern AU fics, there’s always this deep nuanced explanation for why bucky is working the night shift as a guard for SI or how tony quit his job and became a dancer or when steve opened his flower-shop and its always rly fun to read and helps the reader get into the universe - but then sam and rhodey just fit into the universe because ✨ reasons ✨. and yeah, a part of that is because those fics aren’t centred around sam and rhodey, but even characters like peter and natasha and wanda get these deep in-universe backstories, but ned and mj and kamala are just, slotted in. 

i dont think its intentional, but a lot of authors are happy to write poc characters into their AUs for the sake of a character, without actually bothering to delve into why that character is there. like  steve owns a flowershop because his mother taught him flower language when he was a kid and he hated violence and sam works the counter because he is (checks notes) steve’s friend. i’m not saying that sam can’t work the counter, but it would be nice if some nuance was given to why he’s working the counter instead of just being a therapist like he canonically is. and thats how you arrive at the conclusion that sam is working the counter because if he’s a therapist with his own life then he can’t serve his narrative purpose of being steve’s bestfriend - which if you think about it, is basically just the black bestfriend type deal. 

and when i started writing this fic, i realized i was doing the same thing. it was conveniently narratively for sam to be a teacher, but where i was giving tony a proper backstory on how he became a single dad, i wasnt giving sam the same nuance. and it was important to me that i didnt fall into this pitfall, so i reworked the fic to build a narrative around sam the school teacher, and it became this massive piece, and im truly so proud of this fic i can’t even explain it

5. just let the feeling grow - mcdanno, hawaii 5 o, established relationship, 1.4k, T

Danny finds the ring three days after Steve buys it.

for those who haven’t watched hawaii 5 0 (btw please go watch h50, it’s so worth it), one of the major running themes is danny’s relationship with his ex wife, rachel. even though they never officially get back together, she’s someone he frequently falls into bed with, and they even have two kids together. in typical fandom fashion, this means that in most mcdanno fics, she’s quite villainized. even though i dont agree with everything she’s done, i have always found rachel to be a refreshingly complex character and always had a bit of a soft spot for her. another major recurring theme is, due to the tumultuous nature of his relationship with rachel, danny is a bit of a commitment-phobe.

i was going to do a character study type fic where i looked into what the breakdown of his marriage had meant for how danny views relationship and views marriage in general (in the light of a possible second marriage with steve), but then, as you can see from the wordcount, i got a bit lazy and just wrapped it all up in a thousand or so words. despite that, i am still proud of this fic, bc i think i touched on a couple important things, and most importantly - i get to say i added some good vibes into a fandom that is so quick to demonize its female characters

The Rhodes family are extremely smart. Roberta Rhodes is a talented lawyer who has won even trials people thought were a closed case. Terrance Rhodes was an amazing paramedic who saved more lives than thought possible before he retired. Rhodey and Jeanette? Geniuses. To add to their sibling rivalry, however, one of them (Rhodey) in STEM and the other (Jeanette) in Humanities. Rhodey has a PhD in rocket science and designs planes for the Air Force. Jeanette is a gifted writer of short stories, and her family is wearing her down about publishing (well, except Rhodey, who teases her about how a younger Jeanette would throw caution to the wind and publish her collection), her day job is being a seamstress (she always liked fashion as a kid).

Lila Rhodes is a genius, a prodigy child, talented at engineering and inventing but loving rockets enough to grow up at NASA. Due to her interests, Rhodey is her favorite. Jeanette hates it. Rhodey is smug about it.

Thanos's decimation wiped out most of the resistance against him. The Avengers' most powerful and iconic members are gone. Tony Stark turned to dust on Titan in the hands of his protege, while Steve Rogers and Thor disappeared from Wakanda following the battle. Now, Peter Parker is trapped on a ship far from home with only Nebula for company. Waiting for him back on Earth are a confused people with no one able to answer their questions.

Peter must utilise the help of the few that survived in order to move on from their loss. Utilising the full might of Stark Industries, as well as his own political capital, Peter becomes the world's foremost spokesman for the enhanced, and uses his influence to help the world move on. Eventually having a peaceful existence, his life is thrown into disarray with the arrival of Scott Lang, and his insane plan to save the dusted.
