I got in a discussion the other day about investing, because someone wanted to know why I had no investments and wouldn't stop till I answered them. I told them I cared about ethics, and they were like, "Well then you'll never be able to invest in anything!! And you'll be poor forever!!"

Is ethical investment (not just investing in greenwashed companies) possible, at all? or should i resign myself to 'being poor forever'?

if your friends are all graduating, but you aren't even close, or planning to? that's okay.

if your friends are all getting married, but you aren't in a situation or place for that to happen? that's okay.

if your friends are in a better place financially? that's okay.

don't get me wrong, it sucks fat balls watching the people around you have something you've been working really hard for/ something that you really want- but their success has no relation to yours. it doesn't mean that you did anything wrong, or that they did anything right. it's two separate stories that really have no relation to each other except for the fact that they live in the same dimension.

stop beating yourself up for shit like that. i promise you are doing a great job, and you're where you are meant to be.

I work in tertiary education. I get sent to lectures in just about any discipline, and I see what gets taught to students.

I need you to understand this very clearly:

The sciences teach critical thinking as well.

Sometimes critical thinking requires mathematical concepts. At times like that, the sciences do better than the humanities.

Anyone can say "Correlation is not the same as causation", but it's statisticians who can tell you why not and what that means.

Don't get me wrong. The arts are vital knowledge and it is a travesty that they are chronically under-funded. Literature and art history study meaning and how it is communicated -- an urgently relevant field in these days of burgeoning AI.

But the arts are not what they have (defensively) set themselves up to be, i.e. the sole bulwark of critical thinking against nonsense.

In my experience, the war between the sciences and the humanities is entirely one-sided. Most of the sciences are barely aware it's even a thing.

Your enemy isn't science. It's economics and finance.
