Ok, I had the most mind breaking realization about WYFILWMA yesterday and I can't believe I haven't seen anyone else talk about it.

So, lets take it all the way back to the Troy Saga, with Full Speed Ahead. In the first (chorus?) where we hear 'waiting' for the first time, the third waiting ("Penelope's waiting for me") the word waiting has the same melody as the second waiting in Anticlea's/Penelope's waiting ( I cannot believe I didn't notice it with how many times I listened to the underworld), and it is their 'waiting' that Odysseus sings in WYFILWMA.

So what he sings in the last song both lyrically and melodically mirrors the waiting in full speed ahead back before he became the monster (again, the waiting thing has been here from the beginning AND I MISSED IT), but this time instead of 'for me' it is 'for love', because Ody no longer believe that he is the man Penelope is waiting for, that she is waiting for the idea of the man he used to be.

So when Penelope responds with her own chorus of waitings that ends with "for you" the 'for' being the same melody as 'Odysseus' in Different Beast, which is her acknowledging and accepting the monster he's become, and then 'for you' solidifying that it wasn't just love that she was waiting for, she could have found love somewhere else, she's been waiting for her husband, for Odysseus.

and THATS what makes the Just a Man reprise so powerful, because at the end of the day that is all he is, that is all he has ever been, is just a man who would (and did) trade the world to see his son and wife.

Like what? The longing, the excitement, the emotion. It always gets me.

During "Full Speed Ahead", Odysseus goes: "Ithaca is waiting. My Kingdoom is waiting. Penelope is waiting for me." Whilst the chorus goes: "Ithaca's waiting. The Kingdoom is waiting. ....waiting." Do you think that little space where they don't repeat Penelope's name, they're saying to themselves their own loved ones names. For example, Eurylochus would go: "Ithaca's waiting. The Kingdoom is waiting. Ctimene is waiting."

And then they never make it home.

Full Speed Ahead comic I made months ago that's been sitting in my drive. I was really proud of it at the time and I owe it to past me to still acknowledge it now (even if every single part of it makes me mad). This was my final for a comics class I took a while ago and my professor made working on this thing absolute hell.

Anyway, glad I'm not a comics artist anymore lmao, mad respect to everyone who can sustain the workflow because I certainly cannot.

Epictober Day 3: Full Speed Ahead

POLITES: (pointing) Look! There in the distance, I see an island! I see a light that faintly glows. Maybe they’re people lighting a fire. Maybe they’ll share some food, who knows?

EURYLOCHUS: (stops peering into the distance to stare at POLITES) “Share?” Is that what we’re calling it now? (pretending to be an islander) “Oh gee, we have so much food, what do we do with it all? If only six hundred starving soldiers would turn up to help us eat it!” (drops act) They “share” because we have 600 swords, you delusional fool!

ODYSSEUS: (ignoring them both) Something feels off here. I see fire, but there’s no smoke.

EURYLOCHUS: I say we strike first! We don’t have time to waste, so let’s raid the place and—

ODYSSEUS: (cutting him off) No. Polites, gear up. You and I’ll go ahead. We should try to find a way that no one ends up dead.

EURYLOCHUS: (incredulous) Assuming for some reason these island people just willingly hand over what’s probably a whole month’s supply of food for their entire village…you and Polites are just going to bring it back enough food for six hundred men? By yourselves?

POLITES: (looking admiringly at ODYSSEUS) He’s very strong.

EURYLOCHUS: (to POLITES) Remind me… How did you survive a whole decade as a soldier in a siege?

POLITES: (without shame) I stayed behind Odysseus, mostly.

EURYLOCHUS: Right. And you killed how man Trojans, doing that?

POLITES: (earnestly) Oh, I don’t like killing. I’m a pacifist. Greet the world with open arms!

EURYLOCHUS: …

POLITES: …

EURYLOCHUS: What the f*ck, dude.

The following exchange just came to mind, this happens between Full Speed Ahead and Open Arms

Polites: Friend! What's up with the long face?

Odysseus: Astyanax was trying to say his first words this morning

Polites: but that's great! I don't see the problem

Odyssey: he was saying "oopeet", I thought he was trying to say "full speed"...

Polites: and?

Odysseus: when he finally was able to pronounce it better, it became obvious he was just calling me "stupid"

Polites: ...

OPEN ARMS- The timeline is a bit messy here :') cause Scar convinced Bdubs to go and search for their father and now, at the time they sing this song, they are already on the ship with Lizzie, Jimmy, Joel, Mumbo, Bigb, Impulse, Tango, Skizz, Ren and Gem. The first verse is Scar talking to Bdubs and telling him to chill out, but the moment the 'lotus eaters' (aka any mob) approaches, Scar becomes Odysseus and Bdubs becomes Polites, mocking Scar of his hypocricy but also telling him to relax, sooo yeah! Open arms!

FULL SPEED AHEAD- Mainly a song to get to know the crew better, nothing much, the crew runs down of food for mysterious reasons and have to do a stop on a nearby island, but Lizzie seems weirdly... Tense?

Yeah, so I have to rant abt this: I made an epic the musical x traffic life smp story. It is not done. I don't know if I will end it. If someone sees this pls pls pls pick it upppp!!!

A few notes: The clockers are a canon family in here, the mother is Cleo, the father is Etho and the children are Bdubs and Scar, Cletho is canon but 'divorced' (it's complicated) and it will mostly remain neutral about ships. Jimmy and Lizzie are blood Seablings, with Grian and Pearl is complicated Skyblings. (Not in any incestuous way.)

Y'know the part of The Vengeance Saga that really got me emotional?

Like obviously several parts made me feel things, but only one part in particular made my heart truly ache.

In the beginning of Dangerous, Odysseus sings "'Cause I had one goal in mind" in the same way he once sang "With only one goal in mind" back in the beginning of "Full Speed Ahead." In "Full Speed Ahead", this line is immediately followed by the crew singing "Make it back alive to our homeland."

But when he says it in "Dangerous", there is no response. It is just silence. For five seconds, there is nothing.

Odysseus isn't like the gods, able to summon a chorus of voices at will. He is only supported by real, living—or once living—people. When there are none left, it is quiet.

He is truly, utterly, completely alone.

To follow up on this post, it would be so freaking funny if when Annabeth is telling Percy about Odysseus/the Odyssey, the screen cuts to an actual depiction of the narration, and Jay Herrans as Ody is like standing at the bow of the ship and pointing ahead and stuff and they're singing Full Speed Ahead. Cut back to Percabeth, and Percy's like, "...why are they singing?" I would p e r i s h
