I've been doing a lot of thinking about my family and how I was treated as a child, and honestly, my father has never seemed more amazing in my eyes.

I used to love Luigi(Mario's brother) when I was little. Like, he was my favorite character ever, and I had multiple plushies of him. Didn't give a fuck about Mario, vaguely tolerated Peach, but I loved Luigi.

On my first day of kindergarten, my dad gave me the number for his work phone and said it was Luigi's phone number. "If anything happens at school, call Luigi."And not even twenty minutes into my first day, I was having a panic attack. So I went down to the principal's office and called "Luigi."

Now, at the time, my father was in a meeting with his manager and his supervisor, along with most of his coworkers. And when I called, he picked up before he even left the room.

And he put on a very awful Italian accent and said, "Itsa me, Luigi! Whatsa the matter?"In front of his boss and coworkers. Without telling them what was going on. So they were absolutely bewildered, and he carried on like they didn't even exist. He only explained what was happening after I had calmed down and hung up, to which most of them responded with "Aww, cute."

I continued to call him whenever I got upset at school, and eventually his coworkers got in on it. I distinctly remember one of them impersonating Toad. I don't know why I'm telling you this, I just thought it might make you smile :)

This hits extra hard today. A close friend of mine’s husband was rushed to the ER a few weeks ago because of a mass on his brain. They removed it successfully, sent him home, sent the tumor out for biopsy. They had no results, heard virtually nothing, for three weeks.

Then yesterday he found out VIA HIS PATIENT PORTAL ONLINE that the biopsy finally came back and it’s one of the worst types of tumors. The usual prognosis is a few years to live. He tries calling the offices of every doctor he’s beeb involved with. All closed for national holiday. Starts calling everyone again first thing this morning. Left messages. Has yet to have anyone with expertise even talk to him to let him know whether or not he’s dying. And it’s Friday afternoon now, so they’ll probably spend the whole weekend in uncertainty. I can’t imagine. Cannot even fucking imagine.

I’m quite sure I don’t need to say what country we live in. You already know.

The next time they tell you Americans are “happy” with their employer provided health insurance remember that that “happiness” is fueled by willful ignorance of what the alternatives are really like and fear of losing what little crappy health care they currently have.

Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.

have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.

and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.

black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.

if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.

iIt doesn’t stop me from writing, but it does kill me a little bit inside when I see the hit count going up but not the kudos. Because it’s probably someone reading every chapter and forgetting to leave kudos, but what if it’s 15 people just taking one look at it and going “no thanks?”

I just saw a comment saying that authors who get 300 hits and only six kudos would assume 294 people didn't like their story, and it prompted me to make this poll to get an indication of whether that was an accurate line of reasoning or not.
