Justice Division sues Virginia for its voter purge over nonexistent ‘noncitizen voting’
The Justice Division is suing Virginia election officers over their latest efforts to cancel voter registrations, alleging their actions violate a federal regulation that bars the purging of voter rolls so near the election. Filed on Friday, the lawsuit accuses the Virginia State Board of Elections and the Virginia commissioner of elections of violating the Nationwide Voter Registration Act’s…

GOP-controlled House passes performative and nonsensical SAVE Act 221-198 to ban noncitizens from voting in federal elections (in which they already barred from)
RAFAEL BERNAL AND MYCHAEL SCHNELL at The Hill:
House Republicans and a handful of Democrats on Wednesday approved a bill that seeks to expand proof-of-citizenship requirements to vote in federal elections and impose voter roll purge requirements on states, legislation that has been touted by former President Trump. The legislation — formally titled the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act — cleared the chamber in a 221-198 vote, with five Democrats voting yes. It now heads to the Senate, where it is all but certain to be ignored amid opposition from Democrats.
President Biden has vowed to veto the measure. Opponents of the bill say its core idea — establishing noncitizen voting as illegal — is redundant, and argue that its provisions will more likely lead to U.S. citizens being denied their right to vote than to preventing votes by foreign nationals. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), meanwhile, argued on the House floor Wednesday that the legislation is necessary because noncitizens have voted in U.S. elections despite it being illegal to do so. “Even though it’s already illegal, this is happening,” Johnson said. In May, Johnson told reporters, “we all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections. But it’s not been something that is easily provable. We don’t have that number. “This legislation will allow us to do exactly that — it will prevent that from happening. And if someone tries to do it, it will now be unlawful within the states,” he added.
[...] The claim that noncitizens are voting — and that Democrats are willfully importing undocumented immigrants to vote — is the bill’s raison d’être.
The US House voted passes performative and nonsensical SAVE Act 221-198 to ban noncitizens from voting in federal elections (in which they already barred from). The bill will rightfully die in the Senate, and if it does manage to pass that body, President Biden will veto it.

I had a dream last night where Trump came to speak on my campus* and It Did Not Go Well.
There were a bunch of banners advertising his visit and they were all defaced--there was a specific slogan spray-painted on them, but I don't remember what it was--and then when the time came for his speech, the lecture hall was about 1/4 full, with mostly old White people, plus a couple of rows of hecklers who managed to get in. There were about five times as many counter-protesters outside as there were people in the audience, and when he came on stage they (we?**) started chanting--again, I don't remember the slogan--loudly enough to drown out his voice inside, and eventually he just gave up and left.
Anyway, hear me, Apollo, god of the red dodge ball.
(*It was a sort of amalgam of various ones where I've worked and studied; the building where he spoke dream never specified what my role was there. The building where he spoke was a specific one at Penn State, tho.)
(**Part of the dream it was like I was there in the crowd, and part of it I was seeing it in the news.)
#now that I think about it it was a lot like that one scene in the new season of Fargo#but I was initially thinking about it as a metaphor for the election#I was just reading the other day about how eligible gen-Z voters now outnumber boomers

I for real need to stop politicsposting on social media for my own health and that of those around me but before I do that I just want to say that a Safe Blue State is not eternal, it is not static, is is not a guaranteed fact of the universe, it is only as safe as we make it. And that means paying attention to state and local politics and voting every single chance we get.
#william francis drop the official voter turnout statistics. if the rough math i just did is right oooooooh.......don't piss me off.#you all want the protections and prosperity of a Safe Blue State but you can't do the simplest thing in the world to keep it that way#i am going to toss you into the harbor. have myself a little tea party how about that.#like. they make it so fucking easy to vote here dude i almost feel guilty talking about it.#you give your info to the rmv to prove you're real and eligible they mail you your very own special ballot you fill it out in the comfort#of your own home in your pajamas drinking coffee and then you either mail it back or drop it off at city hall. like there's no excuse.

I have to admit that it has been WILD to see what comes out of the contingent of people who have decided to put all their eggs in the electoral basket as they seek to explain their logic to others. I keep seeing statements in these posts that I am absolutely sure people are just saying without recognizing the implications because they're scared but my god
#the amount of cruelty in how these posts are phrased#'if I can do [thing that is frankly fucking obscene to have felt compelled to do to exercise a basic right] to vote than so can you!!'#but like#we do remember that we've agreed not to victim blame people unable to overcome systemic oppression and disenfranchisement#i thought that if 'your legislators are restricting your vote' we felt empathy and responsibility not disdain and shame#my district has voter id laws that had me and wifey scrambling until literally TODAY to make sure at least one of us could legally vote#while on a technical level i am an 'eligible voter' legally even if i try to show up to vote I WILL BE SENT AWAY WITHOUT PROVISIONAL BALLOT#and i really think people's only concept of 'can't vote' is literally 'explicutly legally prohibited from voting' as opposed to#the understanding of voter suppression we have had literally since women and poc started seeking suffrage#you know the one where selectively applied laws and restrictions with asymetrical gatekeeping explicitly create plausible deniability

every day i become more and more and more worried about this goddamn fucking election. im not even living in the us anymore n its giving me migraines. first a failed assassination attempt on trump which will only boost support for him among his backers, then biden finally succumbs to all the cries for him to step down. hes the presidential incumbant who has stepped down from the race the latest out of any other, and his backing of harris is expected but also cause for some worry. if she does become the official democratic nominee, we might just have another hillary vs trump situation, and any kind of credit harris might get for being vp would be offset by the fact that she isnt white. the democratic party needs to get its act together and actually rally around a single nominee now, cause if any kind of further splintering happens now, it could spell very very bad news for november
#us politics#will all of u eligible voters vote now then?#now that u got what u wanted n bidens out#or will u just replace his name w harris' in ur declarations to not vote if she becomes the official candidate?#im so tired yall

A reminder that if you are an American citizen you can vote even if you live outside of the US (voting abroad is not just for the military!) so if you or someone you know is going to be living elsewhere on Election Day (expats, semesters abroad, in some cases even American citizens born abroad who have never lived in the US) You can vote!!!! Go to votefromabroad.org and they will walk you through the process based on the state you vote in! (your last state of residence)
My fellow leftists, do NOT give in to defeatism.
Things are already turning around.
#seriously there are millions of eligible voters living abroad#and most of them lean blue#but only like 2% actually send in a ballot#In 2016 there were more Michigan voters living in Canada alone than the number of votes that Trump won the state by#if you’re a non-American watching the American elections with ever increasing frustrations#one thing you can actually do if encourage any Americans in your circle to figure out thier absentee ballots#especially if you live somewhere with a high number of expats like Canada or the UK

is it a psyop or is it just a common sentiment shared by most people in the country
#you have to imagine that these people are so chronically online that they have forgotten what the opinions of real people in real life are#something like half of all eligible voters do not cast a ballot why do you think that is#maybe is something to do with a general trend towards disillusionment and lack of trust in the government coupled with an increasing number#of laws being passed that make it harder for anyone who isnt a white Republican to vote idk. what do i tell black ppl in the south#who have to wait 5 hours to cast a ballot just for their gerrymandered district to come out red anyway

The election doesn’t start tomorrow, it ends tomorrow.
If you haven’t already, please make sure you are registered to vote and know where your polling place is (vote.org is a great and easy way to get that information). Additionally, please make sure you have a way to get to your polling place. Uber and Lyft often give free or discounted rides to the polls, and this year the car rental company, Hertz, is allowing free one-day rentals to get to the polls. More information on that here.
EDIT: NAACP has a discount code to use for Lyft, valid for two rides up to $20 ($40 total). Use code: NAACPVOTE24
The following states allow same day registration for general elections, ie: the presidential election:
California
Colorado
Washington DC
Hawaii
Idaho
Illinois
Iowa
Maine
Maryland
Michigan
Minnesota
Montana
Nevada
New Hampshire
New Mexico
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin
Wyoming
Note: North Dakota does not require formal voter registration, and upon presenting valid identification at a polling place, eligible citizens receive their ballot to vote.
all info here
The following states are required by law to give you time off to vote (between one and three hours):
Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Georgia
Illinois
Iowa
Kansas
Kentucky
Maryland
Massachusetts
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
Nevada
New Mexico
New York
Ohio
Oklahoma
South Dakota
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
West Virginia
Wisconsin
Wyoming
*Most states requiring employers to permit voting leave also require that this time is paid. Among the above, the following do not: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Dakota. (info here)
Again, it is your right to vote. If you are in line when the polls close, stay in line. It is your legal right to vote.
If you are turned away at the polls, say the following verbatim: “Give me a provisional ballot with a receipt as required by law.”
If you make a mistake on your ballot, you have the right to ask for a new ballot. Don’t cross anything out, simply ask for a new one.
Poll workers are required to make reasonable accommodations for voters who need, including ballots in other languages or translators.
Canvassing is not allowed at polling places, and no one is allowed to threaten or intimidate voters. You have the right to report anything of the like.
All info taken from here
Some tips:
Don’t wear political merch to the polls.
Don’t engage with anyone about your politics at the polls.
Don’t take phone calls inside your polling place — it can wait, please be respectful.
Research who is running locally and see what their policies are. Additionally, research any local propositions that may be on the ballot. The language on ballots is made to be purposefully confusing, so make sure you read everything carefully in addition to your research.
If you’re able to get up early on Election Day, go right when your polling place opens to beat the line.
REMEMBER: IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE!
Here are a list of state-by-state voter protection hotlines, as well as hotlines in various other languages:
Please vote tomorrow if you have not already. It’s so important, and choosing not to vote or voting for a third party is a vote for extremist measures. Vote down the ballot, and do not let anyone bully you into voting one certain way.
What we are seeing throughout this election cycle (and the last two election cycles) is entirely abnormal. The bullying we see from a certain side and its supporters is childish and dangerous. They spew false information, make racist remarks, and sexualize and discriminate fellow candidates. No single presidential candidate is completely and wholly good, so criticize accordingly.
Vote with those you love in mind, vote with your safety in mind, and vote for those who will be affected for decades to come. Vote for someone who speaks coherently, not for someone who is, let’s be honest, not cognitively alright — and that is the bare minimum of the issue.
If you have anything to add to this post, please do. If anything is incorrect, please let me know and I will gladly change it.
Vote. Vote. Vote.

Hey, US citizens who are eligible to vote, today is National Voter Registration Day!
As someone unable to vote in the country I live in, I’d like to take a moment to encourage everyone who is eligible to vote to check their voter registration.
Deadlines are coming up fast in many states, and many states have been purging their voter rolls to try and suppress the vote. Don’t let them take it from you.
You can use this link below to check your voting status, and remind your friends/family/followers to do the same; it only takes a couple minutes.
And remember, if you’re vote didn't matter, the bastards wouldn’t be working so hard to take it from you.
