“It’s not that I don’t want to, I just don’t want to, you know?” Regulus tells James.

“Yeah, I know.” James says. “But hey… you wanted to try things outside your comfort zone—"

“I meant things like sky diving or bungee jumping. Not this.” Regulus drops his head in his hands.

“You don’t have to if you really don’t want to.” James tells him.

“Yes, I do!” Regulus grumbles. “Plus… I want to...” He whispers after a moment. “I just don’t want to.” He adds after another beat of silence.

James chuckles beside him and Regulus lifts his head up with a glare.

“This is not funny.” He tries to snap but it comes out as more of a pout.

“I’m sorry.” James smiles sweetly. “But I do think you’re overthinking it a little. It’s just my mum.”

“Just your mum!?” Regulus repeats. “Your mum who I have never met, I’ve never even talked to, and now I’m going to call her on the phone, and I hate talking on the phone. I think I can overthink that a little!”

“It won’t be that bad. You’ll call, thank her for the gift, and that’s it. It’ll take five minutes then you’re done.” James tries to tell him. “Do you want me to call her first then I can hand it over to you?” He asks.

“No.” Regulus says firmly after thinking about it for a moment. “I want to. It means more if I call her.” He explains. “I just don’t want to.” He mumbles.

James chuckles again and Regulus glares at him. He holds his hands up in mock surrender, holding his phone in one of his hands.

“Ugh, you know what?” Regulus snaps then grabs the phone. “Just give me that.”

Regulus stands up, takes a deep breath and hits call before he has a chance to change his mind.

Two hours later

“Hey Reg?” James walks into the living room. “Do you think I can have my phone back?”

“Shush!” Regulus waves him off. “Sorry Effie, keep going.”

it would be funny if Effie’s name was Persephone instead of Euphemia, because her sister’s name is Proserpina —which is the Roman version for Persephone— and i totally see their parents going like “yeah, give them the same name, it’s fancy” and then effie has to use the shorter version of her name for the rest of her life, because she doesn’t like the idea of her and her sister’s having the same name.

Regulus is sitting on the couch trying to keep his knee from bouncing up and down. His palms are sweaty, there’s a knot in his stomach and a lump in his throat. He tries to take a deep breath and his shoulders slump forward slightly, until he hears the sound of heels approaching and his back snaps up straight.

She enters the room and takes a seat in the chair across from him.

“So…?” She asks.

He takes another deep breath and looks her right in the eye.

“I want to marry your son.” He tells her.

Effie is on her feet in less than a second pulling him into a tight hug.

“Monty, get in here!” She yells excitedly without loosening her grip on him. She turns her head and kisses his cheek, and all the nerves leave his body as he melts into her hug.
