On her fingers, Chicago’s Chief Sustainability Officer Angela Tovar counted the city buildings that will soon source all of their power from renewable energy: O’Hare International Airport, Midway International Airport, City Hall.

[Note: This is an even huger deal than it sounds like. Chicago O'Hare International Airport is, as of 2023, the 9th busiest airport in the world.]

Chicago’s real estate portfolio is massive. It includes 98 fire stations, 81 library locations, 25 police stations and two of the largest water treatment plants on the planet — in all, more than 400 municipal buildings.

It takes approximately 700,000 megawatt hours per year to keep the wheels turning in the third largest city in the country. Beginning Jan. 1, every single one of them will come solely from clean, renewable energy, mostly sourced from Illinois’ newest and largest solar farm. The move is projected to cut the Windy City’s carbon footprint by approximately 290,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, the equivalent of taking 62,000 cars off the road, the city said.

Chicago is one of several cities across the country that are not only shaking up their energy mix but also taking advantage of their bulk-buying power to spur new clean energy development.

The city — and much of Illinois — already has one of the cleanest energy mixes in the country, with over 50% of the state’s electricity coming from nuclear power. But while nuclear energy is considered “clean,” carbon-free energy, it is not considered renewable.

Chicago’s move toward renewable energy has been years in the making. The goal of sourcing the city’s energy purely from renewable sources was first established by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2017. In 2022, Mayor Lori Lightfoot struck a deal with electricity supplier Constellation to purchase renewable energy from developer Swift Current Energy for the city, beginning in 2025.

Swift Current began construction on the 3,800-acre, 593-megawatt solar farm in central Illinois as part of the same five-year, $422 million agreement. Straddling two counties in central Illinois, the Double Black Diamond Solar project is now the largest solar installation east of the Mississippi River. It can produce enough electricity to power more than 100,000 homes, according to Swift Current’s vice president of origination, Caroline Mann.

Chicago alone has agreed to purchase approximately half the installation’s total output, which will cover about 70 percent of its municipal electricity needs. City officials plan to cover the remaining 30 percent through the purchase of renewable energy credits.

“That’s really a feature and not a bug of our plan,” said deputy chief sustainability officer Jared Policicchio. He added that he hopes the built-in market will help encourage additional clean energy development locally, albeit on a much smaller scale: “Our goal over the next several years is that we reach a point where we’re not buying renewable energy credits.”

Los Angeles, Houston, Seattle, Orlando, Florida, and more than 700 other U.S. cities and towns have signed similar purchasing agreements since 2015, according to a 2022 study from World Resources Institute, but none of their plans mandate nearly as much new renewable energy production as Chicago’s.

“Part of Chicago’s goal was what’s called additionality, bringing new resources into the market and onto the grid here,” said Popkin. “They were the largest municipal deal to do this.”

Chicago also secured a $400,000 annual commitment from Constellation and Swift Current for clean energy workforce training, including training via Chicago Women in Trades, a nonprofit aiming to increase the number of women in union construction and manufacturing jobs.

The economic benefits extend past the city’s limits: According to Swift Current, approximately $100 million in new tax revenue is projected to flow into Sangamon County and Morgan County, which are home to the Double Black Diamond Solar site, over the project’s operational life.

“Cities and other local governments just don’t appreciate their ability to not just support their residents but also shape markets,” said Popkin. “Chicago is demonstrating directly how cities can lead by example, implement ambitious goals amidst evolving state and federal policy changes, and leverage their purchasing power to support a more equitable renewable energy future.” ...

Chicago will meet its goal of transitioning all its municipal buildings to renewable energy by 2025, the first step in a broader goal to source energy for all buildings in the city from renewables by 2035 — making it the largest city in the country to do so, according to the Sierra Club.

With the incoming Trump administration promising to decrease federal support for decarbonizing the economy, Dane says it will be increasingly important for cities, towns and states to drive their own efforts to reduce emissions, build greener economies and meet local climate goals. He says moves like Chicago’s prove that they are capable.

“That is an imperative thing to know, that state, city, county action is a durable pathway, even under the next administration, and [it] needs to happen,” said Dane. “The juice is definitely still worth the squeeze.”

Direction of your spouse

With this technique you can find out from which direction your future spouse will come from. This means in which direction they are located/living as compared to where you are living.

For this method you look which planet rules over your 7th house in your D1 chart and you can also include your Darakaraka in this technique, I have seen that it work as well.

Your 7th lord planet and your Darakaraka planet will tell you the direction of your spouse. Each planet stands for a specific direction. And you basically find the mutual point of those directions or the mutual direction of which these two planets tell you. I hope you know what I mean by that.

Do not include Venus and Jupiter as traditional wife and husband planets because that would mean for everyone that their wife or husband comes from the same direction as everyone else's wife/husband. Only take Venus or Jupiter if they are your actual D1 7th lord or Darakaraka.

With your 7th lord and Darakaraka if you end up getting all directions or completely opposing directions in the end, because some planets give mid-directions, it will be either one or the other of those planets that will be significant (that's the tricky part there). You also look at the house number where your 7th lord and Darakaraka is placed in.

The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th house indicate that you will/need to initiate some sort of movement to meet your spouse, like when you go to another city for work or family/friends trips, visiting relatives in a different city or whatever the circumstances are.

The 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th house indicate that your spouse is fixed to your location, so they will be local to you, from the same place as you live and you could basically bump into them randomly at a bank/school/restaurant/cinema/club/social meetings and such.

The 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th house indicate that you have to travel (truly travel) to foreign places in order to find your spouse, crossing boundaries of land, seas and even borders. The 3rd and 6th houses typically indicates short-distance travel, while the 9th and 12th houses indicate long-distance travel, journeys to faraway places involving cultural/religious and geographical differences.

In most cases you will end up getting two different houses, one where the 7th lord is placed and one where the Darakaraka is placed. This means that universe will offer you two different possibilities for meeting your future spouse, you will have choices and free will. It can be either in the ways of one house or the other house.

Now the directions of each planets:

She was traveling to the North-West direction compared to her local place. And her husband was from the same city as her relatives, who were living 2 hours away from her. The husband was a work colleague of the relatives son. So she was the one who initiated movement and it happened with her family and through the connections of her family.

Let's do a predictive example:

Before I get hundreds of requests on him let's take Jungkook straight forward. His 7th Lord is Mercury and his Darakaraka is Moon. Mercury is North and Moon is North-West that combined makes North-West. Both planets are placed in his 9th house. So he will have to travel to culturally/religiously/geographically foreign places and cross borders in order to meet his future spouse. And compared to his current location he has to travel to the North-West direction.

The Ainu people are an indigenous ethnic group residing in the northern parts of the Japanese archipelago, including what is today known as Hokkaido and the Tōhoku region of Honshu. Their ancestors date back to the Paleolithic (35,000 – 13,500 BCE) and Jomon periods (13,500 – 400 BCE).

This accordion style album is a copy of Ishūretsuzō (夷酋列像), also known as A Series of Paintings of Ainu Chieftains. It is a series of twelve painted portraits of Ainu elders who helped suppress the Menashi–Kunashiri rebellion in 1789 by siding with the Wajin (ethnic Japanese people, also called Yamato people). The original portraits were completed in 1790 by the Japanese artist Kakizaki Hakyō (1764–1826) and was received by the imperial court in Kyoto in 1791. The album includes a portrait of an elderly woman named Chikiriashikai, the mother of the chieftain Ikotoi, also pictured in the album.

Tan Yi-Ern Samuel, Ph.D. student in the Department of History of Art and Architecture, is looking at this album for his paper in Professor Yukio Lippit’s seminar on East Asian Portraiture, taught with curator of Chinese painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Joseph Scheier-Dolberg. Today, we opened the album to look at it in its standing accordion style. The clothing worn and other accoutrements including animal fur depicted in the portraits show the connections between the Ainu, the Wajin, China, and Russia during that time.

The Ainu people are one of the few ethnic minorities native to the Japanese islands. They have been subjected to forced assimilation and colonization by the Japanese since at least the 18th century or earlier. Their ancestors, referred to as Emishi, were pushed to the northern islands by Wajin since the 9th century. The portraits of Ainu elders in this album reveal how they might have been fashioned in the imagination of the Wajin in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Battle of Edington

The Battle of Edington, fought in May 878 in southwest England, saw Alfred the Great, King of Wessex (r. 871-899), win a decisive victory over the Viking leader Guthrum (d. 890). Two weeks later, under the terms of the Treaty of Wedmore, Guthrum surrendered, agreeing to both convert to Christianity and leave Wessex.

In the months leading up to the battle, the Vikings had overrun much of England, and with Guthrum's invasion of Wessex in January 878, the last Anglo-Saxon kingdom stood on the brink of collapse. After being forced into hiding in the Somerset marshes, Alfred eventually regathered his army and defeated the invaders. His triumph compelled Guthrum to retreat to East Anglia, where he ruled as king.

In the years that followed, the two kings worked to establish a more peaceful coexistence between the Norse settlers and the Anglo-Saxons. However, Alfred's successors eventually embarked upon the reconquest of the lost Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and Edington would, in time, be marked as the first of many great victories in their quest to unify England under a single ruler.

The Vikings' Arrival

The Viking raids in Britain started in 788, when three ships of Norse pirates landed at Portland, Dorset, where they killed a local reeve (royal official). However, the raid that truly horrified the Anglo-Saxons came five years later when a group of Vikings attacked the monastery of Lindisfarne near the Anglo-Scottish border, which housed the relics of Saint Cuthbert, one of England's most revered saints. The famous scholar Alcuin (d. 804) lamented, "Behold, the church of St Cuthbert spattered with the blood of the priests of God, despoiled of all its ornaments; a place more venerable than all in Britain is given as a prey to pagan peoples" (Whitelock, 899).

Emboldened by their early success, by the mid-9th century, the Vikings were targeting the wealthy towns of Canterbury and London and defeating kings in battle. Alfred was born into this turbulent and unstable world in 849. England as we know it today did not yet exist and was divided into four kingdoms: East Anglia, Mercia (the Midlands), Northumbria (northern England), and the southern kingdom of Wessex, which was ruled by Alfred's father, King Aethelwulf (r. 839-858).

By 865, the Viking threat escalated as Ivar the Boneless, the Viking ruler of Dublin (r. 857-873), assembled a coalition of fleets – known to contemporaries as the 'Great Army' – from Norse bases in Francia, Frisia, Scandinavia, and the Hebrides. Backed by perhaps as many as 5,000 warriors, Ivar and his allies achieved swift success, conquering York, the capital of Northumbria, in 866. Three years later, in 869, they turned south to East Anglia, defeating its ruler, King Edmund (r. 855-869). After refusing to surrender to pagans, Edmund was rewarded with a martyr's death – tied to a tree, he was fired at with spears and beheaded.
