Under a readmore because we gonna ramble. and it will likely be incoherent but yknow.

so walk with me here.

pre time skip boyo being obsessed with being like his dad, a strong man, warrior of the sea, pretending he was strong and brave. and luckily (to him), he was naturally small chested, so it was easy to pass off as a boy for the most part. at the time, only Kayah and the older people in the village knew he was afab, but they didn't really mind when he started correcting people not long before his mother passed away.

her death further cemented the idea on his head that he had to be a big, strong, brave boy so that he could grow up and be as cool as his pirate dad.

and at some point, it turned into the whole brave warrior of the sea thing. east blue usopp really do be giving awkward baby transman energy at times. obsessed with being strong and cool and manly, struggling to fit in his skin.

it wasnt until after Water 7 that he really started to get introspective on himself, which lead to him getting incredibly insecure. thus leading to the, yknow, shenanigans that happened there. but after spending a lot of time with franky, a guy who Literally built himself, and getting some genuinely good words of wisdom, it helped him to think about things in a healthier way and come to his senses about how awful he's been on top of that.

being at his most unsure, he dons Sogeking, an attempt to be the type of man he admires. and while it sort of works for awhile, he still defaults back to his true self. and i don't mean gender wise, i mean the real type of person he is. supportive, anxious, crafty, a worry wart and a big ol baby. but above all that, he _is_ brave. brave enough to shoot down the flag. brave enough to use his talents to save robin. brave enough to scream for luffy, to give luffy the courage to get up at fight despite being entirely drained.

he also learns a bit of what his worth is to the crew. that it never mattered how physically strong he was, or how confident, or how cool he was. what mattered was him, plain and simple. and i feel since then he'd really been working on himself behind the scenes. and with the addition of franky and brook, it was becoming painfully obvious that his idea of a brave warrior of the sea was all wrong. or at the very least, a bit skewed and misdirected.

post time skip usopp finds himself much more confident, much more comfortable in his skin. acutely aware of his strengths and weaknesses, and an unbreaking trust in his crew and his place with them. sure, anxiety will have him wavering from time to time, but ultimately, he knows who he is, and where he belongs.

long nights of introspection for two years straight brought him a sense of peace with himself, mentally, physically, emotionally, etc. he had very long talks with himself, both current and younger. and it brought a million revelations and a mountain of relief.

how he got top surgery dont ask me idk. but damn does he feel like a million bucks.

he probably didnt feel the need to completely change his body, happy with a masc leaning in between physically.

Hi!! I (girl i guess?15) am a demon! I became one when i almost died when i was a lot younger. Typical stuff, your dad tries to kill you to avoid a prediction from this hack medium but ends up fulfilling the prophecy anyways because he didn't realize the one gift he bought for me in my isolation was a mirror with Levi (demon, probably like 3000 yrs old) chilling inside and it liked me so it saved me :p

But back to the whole souls thing! I'm picky about what i eat!! I dont like, just go about the town murdering!

I seek out people that are evil, like my dad was. Its easy with the help of the folks that watch over me now - especially River (M 20somethin). He isn't magical at all, he's unassuming and kind, so people tend to trust him! And he's very serious about picking me the food i like to eat.

We seek people that suck - people that abuse others, hurt innocents and stuff like that. Usually I warn them to change once or twice, because i feel bad about this sort of thing, but River doesn't think i should starve myself like that or whatever :p i still like to give chances to redeem.

And if they don't do it, then they die! Usually River kills them for me. But he's had lots of close calls. He almost dies a lot, and he's only human. Honestly, most my friends are very mortal, and I worry if this diet of mine might be dangerous in the long run - especially if... certain angels come looking for me. Still can't believe that jerk, i thought he was supposed to be my friend...

But on the souls! It's also the only thing that gives me the nutrients to survive. I don't know what to do, or even if there's a way not to eat souls anymore :(

And also? Levi is still up there in my brain. He talks to me sometimes, and I try to let him have some out time and hold the reins to my body so to speak, but he only likes to if i almost die again. He gets scary. He's not picky about what he eats, and he hates how sweet bad souls taste. So i worry if i starve myself trying to find a cure, he might hurt my friends. He already doesn't like that River doesn't think i am a traditional demon. I don't know why it bothers him so much.

Oh - another plus to the demony thing, provided enough energy, i can grant wishes! And the powers come into the shape of these pretty gemstones. For example, though i didn't get to do this one, my best friend December (boyo, 16) has a wish stone that prevents him from being killed. As long as it's intact, wether you cut him, drown him or do whatever, he can't die! But he still can be hurt and incapacitated and I'm not good at healing magic, so if you do that to him, I'll kill you. Violently. He already needs mobility help, he doesnt need more!! I wanna make him another wish stone to help that, but he insists its okay. I hope these stones don't take physical tolls, now that i think of it...

Anyways back to the topic at hand!!! Is it bad that i eat souls? I'm trying super hard to be careful!! And if you have any suggestions of what i could do about this (that dont hurt Levi he's just sad and crusty and in my brain :( dont be mean), please lmk!

-11. Is there a specific physical feature or item that holds special significance to your character? Why is it important to them?

For my twili group: they have a special tree! its a secluded spot where the 4 of them hang out a lot. its in the middle of a field, out of the way of major roads and towns. they found it one day while just wandering around, and decided that it was Their Tree. if one of them isnt around their usual spots, they are probably relaxing at the tree. I'll probably draw it sometime!

adding a hobic option as well because its funny, his staff is probably a very significant item for him. i think he wouldve gotten it when he became a full fledged wizard, which was also around the time he transitioned and came out as gay, meaning its the first magical item he earned, and he earned it as his true self. thats significant to him, even if most other wizards dont get it.

-12. How does your character react to change or unexpected situations? Are they adaptable or resistant?

raide is probably pretty adaptable! shes a very "fuck it, we ball" type guy. whatever happens, he'll probably be fine with it, as long as nobody is hurt by it. they would probably just shrug the change off and continue on with their day.

calen on the other hand.. he would be more resistant. dont get me wrong, he's willing to accept change, eventually, but its Scary! he gets anxious about it! he wont admit that though, at least not to anyone other than raide. unexpected situations are generally Not Welcome when it comes to this boyo. he Will panic about it. (unless its one of his friends asking for help with something. he would give the world for them, even to his detriment.)

kalt.. hm. i feel like he'd be slightly anxious aboutt change and unexpected situations, but he trusts the people around them so they'd accept it. itll probably be okay, right?

vang would probably be very calm and collected about all of it. change? alright, give her a day to plan things around it and everythings fine. she can figure it out. unexpected situations? she can probably work out what to do about it, if you give her a moment. (she's most of the reason kalt is fine woth change.) shes very reliable when it comes to most things.

hobic would rather live in a house that actively hates who he is on a fundamental level than face change or unexpected situations. this is a very literal example. his house hates him, but he's lived there so long that he would rather just Not leave actually. at least the house is predictable about it, you know?

-14. What is your character's preferred method of self-expression? Do they have any artistic talents or creative outlets?

raide loves so many forms of art! if you took a peek into his house, you would find art supplies of every type all over. sewing and instrument playing and drawing and painting and crocheting and embroidery and sculpting and- (his fav is just regular old drawing though.)

calen prefers to play music or write stories! both are very calming and in the moment things, and he can just get absolutely lost in them. his preffered method of self expression is probably his music specifically. he loves how music can explain things without the need for words at all.

kalt likes painting! hes not very good at it, but they dont care. they'll paint whatever the hell they want and if someone doesnt like it? thats their problem, not his. (its usually landscapes.)

vang likes to sing, she loves all sorts of music, but if it has lyrics? you bet she's going to be humming or singing it around the castle randomly. she does write her own lyrics sometimes, and then asks calen or raide to help her add a tune to it. (or vice versa, where one of them makes a song and then asks vang for some good lyrics for it!)

do spells count as a form of art? because if so, thats hobics choice. he also writes but he really just likes casting spells. or coming up with new spells. or fucking up spells-

okay so firstly- i agree, buuuuuuuut i do have just a few lil notes. just a few. because while i do love lizzard da bomb, i am a hardcore gregor/ripred father/son duo shipper (nonromantically) and just also have some thoughts :p

i agree with a lot of your points and im going to start with the one where gregor doesnt think ripred deserves sympathy because hes an adult and has his shit together. a) we all know ripred do not have his shit together, although we pick that up more through reading between the lines than what gregor tells us anyway the point- yes gregor thinks ripred does not require his "care" if you will, because he is an adult. now, i dont think this is wrong on gregors part- he was thrust into a very adult role at a very young age and not only has to defend his two year old sister who he is very close to from this dangerous and unfamiliar land, but also this bat that he is slowly growing fond of and is bonded to and also the queen and her bat as well that he thinks of as friends and also does not want harm to come to. boyo has enough on his plate as is, and considers ripred to be someone he can count on to take care of himself, and on some occasions him and his friends. B) gregor defo has nothing against offering ripred sympathy, when they first meet he remarks on the pain in the rats eyes and how hardened he seems. gregor has no issues giving ripred sympathy, but he knows the rat will not accept it because he is, like said before, an adult and yknow he and gregor arent on those sorts of terms where he can be sympathetic without ripred biting his head off. again(i mean this with no hate im just like debating your point but sometimes things get lost in typing instead of actually being spoken so just adding this in) when gregor first meets ripred- their first ever interaction- gregor has no idea who this dude is or what he means to them or anything and his first thought when ripred looks at him is "the intelligence, the deadliness, and, most surprisingly, the pain.. he was much more complicated and much more dangerous." (205) he sees ripred as complex and intruiging before they even have their first convo together

then we move onto the convo- firstly- while i can see your point of view, i disagree that gregors stories of ripred would be negative. yes the rat berates him and they dont get along too well at this point in the series, but he still appreciates him. they have been on their quest through the jungle, ripred has been gentle and kind with him, and he trusts the rat. he no longer thinks ripred is going to eat him, except maybe in passing as a joke. of course, in addition to this, i dont think gregor would ever say something too horrible about ripred, even if it is true, because hes telling it to his little sister and he doesnt want her to have more fear than she already does. second- i agree that lizzie choses to see the underland(specifically ripred) with kindness, but thats not to say gregor doesnt either. (and she also has never been there up until this point so its not as hard for her to view it in a positive light, even with everything that happened to her family nothing directly happened to her [im not trying to discredit her trauma or anything but she doesnt have as clear of an image of the underland as gregor or boots or his father do]) gregor has lived among these people, he has fought with these people, he has almost died with these people- he has very many rights to view it in a bad light, but instead he finds the good, choosing to go down there over and over not just to visit his mother but to help his friends, to meet up and play ball games etc etc.

and OMG i loveeeeee this part of your argument yessss with lizzie reading between the lines of gregors stories about ripred/the underland and picking up on stuff that gregor himself doesnt while saying the freaking stories, understanding how her brother and the rat are similar, how she and the rat are similar, how ripred is just trying to protect gregor by teaching him life skills "quick to hide his vulnerabilities from the people he considers himself responsible for" love this quote

also- lizzie is very sweet in giving food and all that- but gregor has a very valid reason for not wanting to give ripred food- the reason being that ripred belittles him and beats him during their lessons and when he feeds him he feels like hes rewarding him for bad behavior (ahhh sorry that sounds too much like a dog and i was reminded of luxa and her goat ripred anyway)

now on the last bit imma be honest you lost me a little bit. "Where Gregor rarely shows any gratefulness for his help and, in fact, rarely views him through a lens unclouded by a deeply ingrained bias against Gnawers, Lizzie is kind. Ripred notices." okay so- the first half yeah okay i understand, gregor doesnt really show active appreciation for ripred. but, he does immediately dig through his pockets for a fortune cookie when ripred complains about hunger, even though he himself isnt that well off with food wise. and ripred complains about it, and gregor apologizes. (of course ripred is just mocking him, but it is gregor showing connection, acknowledging he is hungry and trying to help, apologizing that he doesnt have more. they are connected through their lack thereof) now the second to last sentence i am completely lost on- no offense- 'lense clouded by judgement and bias against rats' umm sorry which? gregor is kind to lapblood, mange, twitchtip, all of which tried to(or almost got him) killed. he brushes lapbloods fur and comforts her over her pups. he(yes he makes a badly timed comment but they had just been mocking his sister and he is nothing if not loyal) he opens the water for mange and makes sure they drink enough. he offers a hand of friendship to twitchtip, even when ripred mocks him and even when she herself snarls back. if gregor has any bias or judgement against ripred, it is purely because of things ripred has done to him(i just realized in defending gregor im really ragging on ripred but honestly until the last book or so he was an unjustifiable dick[well not unjustifiable trauma and all that but still])

now, personally i have absolutely no isses against ripred opening up to lizzie about his family. do i think that maybe he shouldve done that with gregor? yeah definitely. but gregor and ripreds relationship is complex and the point of it is that it grows over the series, and maybe when lizzie arrives they arent at that point in their relationship yet. when ripred tells gregor he can beat the bane and fuck sandwich, do i wish gregor would have said some little gentle comment about his pups and for ripred to reveal a little piece of himself? yes yes i do. but i am ultimately satisfied with the arc gregor/ripred shared together because it is just that; an arc. (also i saw someone post once that ripred purposefully shared it with lizzie so that gregor could hear because he needs to explain himself to the pup, to his pup, and is a trained fighter and master echolocation expert, he knew gregor was awake and he purposefully kept talking, made eye contact with him and made sure he heard him.)

anyways thats all my thoughts sorry you had to read this really long rant but uh yeah :)

Love Is Stored in the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

On Lizzie & Ripred

The newest take I’m seeing right now, both in the TUC tags and on my “controversial TUC takes” post, is that Lizzie’s relationship with Ripred is unfounded and that the inclusion of it “robbed” us of a softer moment between Gregor and Ripred. I disagree with this take so much that I decided to write an entire essay about my thoughts on the subject. The most common argument I see against Lizzie is that she received Ripred’s affection, as well as his tragic backstory, after being present for a very short period of time, while Gregor has known Ripred for months. At a surface level, this may seem counterintuitive, but when we dig deeper into the characters and their behaviors, motivations, and allegiances, the thematic significance of Lizzie’s role in the story becomes apparent.

First and foremost, let’s take a look at Gregor. I love this kid so much, but I do believe that the core of this argument hinges on his more subtle flaws as a character. Consider this: the entirety of The Underland Chronicles is narrated from Gregor’s point-of-view. What does this mean for our perception of the story? We receive only the context that Gregor has, and we only receive the details that Gregor notices and finds important. Across the series, his understanding of the Underland and its denizens expands, grows, and solidifies. He is twelve by Code of Claw and very much still learning and growing, but some of beliefs have settled by this point.

This is where Ripred comes in. Gregor has more or less made up his mind about Ripred by the end of Curse of the Warmbloods. He wants to lead the Gnawers and will achieve that goal by any means necessary. He’s an ally, but probably not a friend, grumpy and abrasive and untouchable. Definitely not worthy of sympathy, because he can take care of himself. In short, Gregor doesn’t see Ripred as a multidimensional person, as someone with emotions outside of anger and self-importance.

In direct opposition, we have Lizzie. Upon first glance, she might seem inconsequential until Code of Claw, because her character arc is quiet and mostly happens off-screen. She’s anxious about almost everything, and the Underland puts her through a lot of trauma in the earlier books without having ever set foot down there. It took her dad from her when she was only four years old, and when he returned years later, he was ill and severely traumatized. His absence and then his inability to work meant that she grew up in poverty, spending a large portion of her childhood food insecure and without a stable home life. Similarly, the Underland suddenly took Gregor, who by that point had undertaken a parental role in the household, and Boots away on more than one occasion. These traumas were then compounded on in Curse of the Warmbloods, first when her family’s apartment was swarmed by rats and then when Grace, the stable parent and breadwinner, contracted the plague and was unable to return home.

Lizzie’s role in both Marks of Secret and Code of Claw directly opposes the effect that Gregor—and by direct extension, we as readers—expects this trauma to have on her. Lizzie is afraid of almost everything, and the Underland has harmed her directly in the past. She should approach it with fear, maybe even hostility, like Gregor does in portions of the book. Lizzie is not Gregor, though, and her key trait as a character is that she is able to see the world as a whole through different eyes. So she chooses kindness, instead.

This is where the excerpt above comes in. Lizzie has never met Ripred personally at this point, and she really only knows anything about him from Gregor’s stories—which almost certainly don’t paint Ripred in the kindest light. Lizzie sees beyond the surface of these stories, though, and considers Ripred as an entire person, with depth and emotions. What she sees between the lines is up for individual interpretation. Maybe she latches onto Ripred’s insistence that Gregor learn echolocation, a skill that might save her brother’s life. She does pester Gregor about practicing. Maybe she sees pieces of Gregor reflected in those stories about Ripred. A rager who doesn’t quite fit in where he’s from or where he’s fighting for, who can be stubborn and short-tempered and quick to hide his vulnerabilities from the people he considers himself responsible for. Maybe she sees pieces of herself reflected in those stories. Maybe, as someone who has lost pieces of her family, who has only one friend, who has likely eaten less than her share so that others could be full, she finds it easy to spot the humanity, for lack of a better word, in Ripred, like light through the crack under a locked door.

Whatever her reasons—and maybe there are no reasons beyond “he’s a person, too”—Lizzie goes out of her way to treat Ripred with kindness before she ever meets him. She sends some of her own food with Gregor so that Ripred doesn’t have to go completely hungry. She makes sure Gregor knows to share that plate of oatmeal raisin cookies with Ripred. Where Gregor rarely shows any gratefulness for his help and, in fact, rarely views him through a lens unclouded by a deeply ingrained bias against Gnawers, Lizzie is kind. Ripred notices.

This is not a matter of Ripred suddenly opening up to Lizzie for little reason after bonding with Gregor across the entire series. Ripred treats Lizzie differently because she acted differently. Their relationship is not built only on Lizzie’s similarities to Silksharp, but on a history of compassion and respect. It isn’t shoehorned in, it’s a necessary relationship that supports the central themes of The Underland Chronicles—violence, war, and colonialism are cyclical, but the refusal to continue living life based on the biases of the past can break that cycle and bring about a brighter future for everyone.

• speaking of, you lads met at an animal shelter. there had been a dog that was astray in the neighbourhood of his home, so Natsuo, being a responsible boyo, took it to the local shelter.

• later he volunteered to help you look for good homes for the animals you'd both found. during this project the two of you got to know each other quite well and ended up hanging out together afterwards!

• and from that point on, everything fell into place naturally. the growing spark between you was undeniable and you both knew it. Natsuo definitely liked you longer, he was just a lil dense about it . . .

• you're nothing short of a hero in his eyes but dear lord he worries for you. when he's attending lectures he sometimes can't help but wonder if you're all right and not getting involved in anything violent.

— despite Natsuo's best efforts to distance himself from Endeavor, it wasn't quite as easy and everyone was very much aware of the Todoroki family. and now the son of the number 1 hero had a lover.

— it wasn't actually that troublesome at first. some newpaper paparazzi occasionally annoyed you but you didn't care for them. most of the time Natsuo and you had your peace during dates aside from a few casual fans.

— but of course there are all sorts of people out there, some out for revenge, some for money, and being desperate means using even the lowest of methods to get what you want.

— so one time it happened, and it was all that took. several bitter villains thought they'd get their revenge through you, silly as it may sound. they made a big show of kidnapping you and demanding Endeavor to 'make up' for his wrongdoing. but all got resolved thanks to heroes, the only casualty being Natsuo's heart from almost exploding from worry and his deepening hatred for his father.

— later on, it wasn't that Natsuo was worried about you not being able to handle yourself, he feared what might happen if more of powerful villains came after you.

— so, after some debate, you agreed not to meet up for a short while to let the fuse of the incident settle down. it would be safer once the media forgot about it. you still texted and chatter over phone though!

— but then a week turned into two weeks, then into a month. you were wondering what was taking Natsuo to say the coast was clear and did a straight-up inquiry through a video chat.

— you could see he was restless the entire time. he said you should wait longer just to be sure everything was calm before meeting up. you became irritated because he was obviously lying and not being his normal, brutally honest self.

— why was he giving you this crap straight to your face?

— truthfully, Natsuo hadn't been sleeping all right recently. ever since that day he had reoccurring nightmares about something awful happening to you. they were just dreams, he knew. yet considering his ruffled up past and the frequency of those horrible visions, it would have been lie to say he was unaffected.

— paranoia just wouldn't leave him alone, and no matter how much he wanted to hold you in his arms again and hated making up stupid excuses, the voice at the back of his mind whispered this was for the best.

— after a month and a half had passed you've had just about enough, however. whatever reason he was keeping you in the dark for did no longer stop you from crashing into his house and demanding the truth.

— Natsuo knew you and expected this to eventually happen. after you made such a powerful entrance though he also knew there was no getting around it this time. really, it was comforting knowing you cared so deeply.

— he told you exactly what had been happening and you resisted the urge to punch him in the arm for having such a mindset. but the look in his beautiful grey eyes was so heartbreaking you threw yourself to embrace him instead. your touch was everything Natsuo had craved for for all this time.

— you skillfully assured him for the next couple of hours while keeping the talk light-hearted (he had obviously been overthinking way too much already). soon enough the issue was resolved and you had a sleepover right there to make uo for the lost time (Shoto and Fuyumi kept eavesdropping on you because y'all were being way too loud in a cute way).

— "i love you, Natsu, but if you ever keep something like this a secret from me again, i can't guarantee the safety of your arm or your front door."
