GAY ICONS: DIRK BOGARDE
Dirk Bogarde became a matinee idol when he was cast as medical student Simon Sparrow in “Doctor in the House” (1954). Bogarde’s on screen charm and sex appeal made him one of the most popular British stars of the 1950s. He went on to appear in four sequels of the film series.
Bogarde didn’t want to be typecast, so he accepted a role in “Victim” (1961), playing a lawyer who initially refused to help a young man that was being blackmailed for being a homosexual (then illegal in Britain). When the boy commits suicide while in jail, Bogarde’s character decides to go after the blackmailers even though it may jeopardize his career.
If asked, Bogarde would denied he was a homosexual. But he never married. He had a long term relationship with Anthony Forwood (former husband to actress Glynis Johns). They met in 1939 when Bogarde was 18 and Forwood was 24. They would eventually move in together in 1968. In the 1970s, they bought a 15th-century farmhouse near Grasse in Provence which they restored.
Perhaps Bogarde’s most famous role was in “Death in Venice” (1971). It Based on the novel by Thomas Mann and directed by Luchino Visconti. Bodarde played Gustav von Aschenbach, an aging gentleman in poor health who becomes obsessed with the “stunning beauty” adolescent Tadzio.
During his 51 year film career, Bogarde appeared in 66 films, and 5 productions for television. He was nominated 5 for BAFTA awards (winning twice). And he received a knighthood in 1992.
Bogarde was also a prolific writer, publishing 9 memoirs between 1977 and 1998.
In 1983 Bogarde and Forwood moved back to Britain… the reason? Forwood had been diagnosed with liver cancer and they sought better treatment back in London. In 1987, while nursing Forwood, Bogarde suffered a minor stroke. Forwood succumbed to the disease in May 1988.
In 1996, Bogarde suffered another stroke while having angioplasty to unblock arteries leading to his heart. This resulted in paralysis on one side and slurred speech. Dirk Bogarde died in May 1999, his ashes were scattered at his former estate in in Southern France.

What Are the Advantages of Having a Doctor on Call?
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, “doctor on call” or “doctors in the house” has been widely used in Malaysia. With this service, sufferers can have health care in their homes. Why it is an attractive option for patients over traditional clinic or hospital visits. This trend is rising because of its many benefits.
Convenience and Comfort
The first great benefit of a doctor on call is its convenience. And patients do not need to commute to a clinic or hospital. This is especially good for the elderly, people with mobility issues, or anyone at risk of severe health problems. They can be treated by healthcare professionals without the added stress of physically traveling.
Additionally, it can be more comfortable for patients to receive care in their homes. They are in a homely environment that reduces anxiety and stress. This is helpful with children and the elderly, to name a few. The house is a place of safety and relaxation for them.
Reduced Waiting Times
Clinics and hospitals in Malaysia can have long waiting times. The doctors in the house can save patients waiting hours at the emergency semblance. They can get medical treatment faster. Timeliness is critical in cases where treatment is time-dependent.
On top of that, you don’t have to bend around the surgery or hospital timings with just a doctor on the phone. Patients can instead schedule a convenient appointment. This makes it ideal for people and families that live busy lifestyles.
Personalized Care:
However, doctors on call provide more individualized treatment than office-based physicians. They can then spend more time with each patient. As a result, they can then better make sense of the patient’s state and provide a more customized treatment. In a home setting rather than in a hospital. It can also offer a clue on other indicators that could impact their health in some respect.
In addition, they can concentrate more on patients than in a hectic clinic or hospital. This results in better diagnosis and therapy effects. This makes patients feel they are appreciated and receive more care.
Better Infection Control:
Hospitals and clinics are the easiest places for infection to snag them from. Through tele-consultation from home, the patient can decrease exposure to infectious diseases, especially for people with compromised immune systems (such as the elderly or those battling chronic diseases).
Since we have just been through a deadly pandemic (COVID-19), limiting exposure to what could be potentially infectious is at the top. This risk is mitigated by allowing doctors to come home for visits so that the patients are not exposed to such a high risk of infections wandering in hospitals.
Medical Care in Remote Areas:
Healthcare is severely lacking in remote or rural areas where many live. These are hard-to-access areas on which, in case of a medical emergency, doctors on call can reach these places to dispense those who would otherwise go without. This service has been created to bridge that gap, making healthcare more accessible.
A doctor on call can be the only help available in such areas. The nearest hospital or clinic is a long way away, and they can be able to access timely medical attention.
Continuity of Care:
An on-call physician can also help with continuity of care. The face they see during every visit may be the same doctor. This will give the doctor a complete snapshot of your health history. It also contributes to a proper relationship between the patient and the doctor that encourages them to use marijuana for their treatment.
Doctors can make better decisions by understanding a patient’s medical history and personal circumstances. While it is easier to ask this of services treating chronic illness or disease, for which the expected duration is long-term and ongoing. Ideally, patients who develop other health issues will also have some form of continuity.
Emergency Situations:
Access to a doctor on call can save your life when an emergency arises. Medical assistance can be a life-saving factor in such cases. An emergency medical professional may stabilize a patient with supportive care, allowing transportation to a hospital for definitive diagnostic and therapeutic management. This is especially useful for little emergencies, which do not necessitate complete clinic resources. This enables patients to get immediate treatment and stop the condition from worsening.
Cost-Effectiveness:
The in-home service might sound more expensive, but it can be cost-effective for some. Cutting travel costs & time for the patients Furthermore, one can save a lot on medical bills by not spending days at the hospital. These savings can really add up for families with children or elderly members. Immediate care from a doctor by call must be convenient to avoid minor ailments developing into major ones that require deeper pockets.
Timely Monitoring and Follow-Up:-
The calls are easier to monitor and follow up with when the doctors are on call. Also, since the staff is closer to your home, they can visit more often to monitor and include patient improvement information. This is especially helpful for people recovering from surgery or managing chronic conditions. Frequent home visits help to track the patient’s condition better. This could result in faster identification of any problem and appropriate modification of the treatments. Top-notch preventive care can drastically improve health consequences.
Psychological Benefits:
This is where the psychological aspects of having doctors on call, buried so long by a mountain of paperwork and calculations, come rushing to the foreground. In their own homes, patients are more at ease and less anxious. This benefits their health and rehabilitation. The less stress a patient has traveling to and from clinics while waiting for labs, the more apt they are to follow recommendations. It may improve someone’s compliance with treatment and improve health and quality of life.
Family Involvement:
The family is more involved in the care process as a doctor visits home. They can ask questions, give extra information, and support the patient during the consultation. This can enhance treatment efficacy and promote patient adherence to the health advice. It also increases the understanding of their condition and needs by other family members. Having this knowledge can help them provide better support and care at home, leading to a patient who is hopefully healthier in both mind and body.
Conclusion:
There are multiple benefits of house doctors in Malaysia. This delivers considerable benefits ranging from convenience and comfort to improved infection control and personalized care. It is a great way to facilitate implying for timely medical care, especially in underserved areas, and for continuous care concept. Both the cheapness and psychological advantages further illustrate the benefits of this practice.

Doom hardcover books in the US!
I have been waiting ages for the hardcover of Extraction Point, and at some point when I wasn't looking, it showed up. You can get it from Thriftbooks new cheaper than Amazon.
Apparently you can also get the two Doom's Day comics, A Doctor in the House - featuring our beloved Missy!Master, bound in hardcover. (At 64 pages that sounds like all of them?)
I've ordered both and will update when they arrive.
