anyway the main interesting thing about the masked empire is that it looks like felassan needed like a special herbs and spices blend to meditate deeply enough to actually contact solas? and even then the impression seemed rather murky and vague (perhaps just bc they hadn't decided what solas' personality was ingame at that time), and solas was pretty detached and still on his "this world is garbage and full of tranquil" mindset prior to dai. i feel like if solas had been regularly able to talk to felassan, he'd 1. be more moved by his argument, 2. be aware that felassan's resolve was waning even before being told, and 3. be less likely to kill him point-blank without even a conversation, since he'd be more confident in his ability to talk him back into loyalty

so i think it makes sense if solas was genuinely Asleep a lot of the time, with some phases of more lucid dreaming where he was able to look at the fade/talk to felassan. so his experience would be vaguely stirring in his uthenera every few centuries, getting a fresh batch of bizarre mortal nightmares, and disconnected updates from felassan that went kind of like this:

"hey boss sooo... we lost all the eluvians and floating cities and stuff, and a lot of people just starved, and the veil is really fucking us. but we're ok! actually some round eared little guys showed up. uhhh actually arlathan's gone now and the population got enslaved by the round eared ones. their mages broke one of the seals on the black city and released a blight. oh the humans got into a new religion :) it's anti-slavery, but it DOES hate spirits. but the people have the dales now! another blight. actually another blight again. ohh the humans really got into their new religion... remember the dales i mentioned? yeah those are gone actually. also the survivors are evanuris loyalists and hate you specifically. two more blights. this last one went by super fast, i barely noticed it! hey actually i trained this mortal girl a bit and she's kind of fun, i think we should rethink the plan, and give her the eluvians and let her cook-"

and presumably solas goes "what the FUCK is felassan talking about. he must be going mad, he could easily foil the whole plan if he's lost it like this. goodbye old friend"

ok so I know I’ve talked about something like this before but I’m gonna do it again because it’s about my sweetest Tartnell and I can!

so I was thinking about that scene in ep3 when he gives Silna her father’s things and I realised that it’s actually one of the three (3) most important scenes in understanding him (the others being the dead room scene in ep5 and when he’s talking to Hickey in ep6 but we’ll get to those). in the ep3 scene he pretty obviously nearly calls her a slur but changes his mind at the last second, as if he has some sort of gut feeling that he really shouldn’t be calling her that (which it must be due to how much and how casually that term was used back then). after that, when Silna grabs his arm, he does try to pull away right up until the moment that Hodgson reminds him that her father is dead. then he just stops. like up until that point, he’s been pretty guarded and hesitant but as soon as Hodge says that, he softens, crouches down to her level, looks her dead in the eye and tries to explain to her that there wasn’t anything else. he also says he put some supper in the bag for her, which I think it said in the script was a can of Goldner’s food so even if she did know what it was, she likely wouldn’t have been able to open it. (tbh he missed the mark a bit with that but his heart’s in the right place). and finally, the fact that he calls her Lady Silence. I’ve seen someone on here talk about this before and that it’s pushing the british class system onto Silna. and while it’s a complete dismissal of her culture, strangely it’s also simultaneously a mark of respect bc of the title. and if you add that to Dave K saying that Tom’s davechella playlist is heavily influenced by the women in his life (therefore implying a deep respect for women 🥰), it makes that mark of respect seem deliberate.

but that’s only one part of him. (rest under the cut bc I’m nice to your dash and this goes on for a while)

that’s pre-lashing Tom: guarded, quiet and reserved and more or less blending into the background. post-lashing Tom is completely different, and that is the Tom we see in the ep6 scene. but he still retains all of the kindness and respectfulness that we see in the early episodes and that is what is showcased in ep5.

so let’s focus on ep5 first. as we see in ep3, he’s always doing his best to help people and this time it’s Magnus that he offers that help to when he says he can get Mr Hornby on his shoulder. I don’t know about you but to me this seems like he’s trying really hard to keep Magnus from going into the hold and becoming even more scared than he already was. unless he’s actually serious and he can carry the dead weight of a fully grown man on his shoulder alone, in which case 🥵 (what? who said that? 👀). but seriously tho, it’s so obvious how much he cares about Magnus here and how much he hates seeing him frightened simply by how calm and patient his voice is when he’s talking to him. the next thing is with Hickey. as they’re carrying Hornby to the dead room, Tom warns Hickey that there’s a beam he needs to step over, then (again, patiently) instructs him to put the body on top of the others, and then he watches to make sure Hickey gets out of the door alright. and honestly, after the fact that it was Hickey’s plan that got him lashed, still being generally nice to him is such a testament to his character (despite the fact that he does later sell out Armitage in an attempt to derail anything Hickey was planning, but I don’t hold that against him).

finally, the ep6 scene. this is where we see another side to him. he’s standing up to Hickey and he gets a bit sassy (“what about you Mr Hickey, did you always want to be a caulker?”). he fights his corner and stands his ground and when he’s fed up with Hickey questioning him, he questions him right back. the way he does this is so interesting to me because he grabs Hickey’s attention, then moves the box onto the sled like what he’s about to say isn’t that important, crouches back down, leans forward and looks Hickey dead in the eye as he asks him, in a very accusatory tone: “why didn’t you turn Armitage in?” (and there’s definitely something in Hickey not answering any of Tom’s questions, but this isn’t about him). there’s also a bit of his trademark kindness in this scene too when he says that he didn’t see the point in turning Armitage in. now, ik there are loads of different ways you could interpret that, but to me, I think he means that turning him in would only bring it all back up again, and so by letting it lie, he’s saving Armitage from going through the lashing at all, which is pretty generous if you add that to the fact that Tom believes he himself “deserved to be flogged”. bc by that he’s effectively saying that Armitage didn’t admit to what he did, so he probably doesn’t believe that he deserves the same punishment, so what right do I have to say that he does?

in short, Tom (like most characters in this show) is an extremely fleshed-out character with a fucking compelling character arc and I love him
