there’s something so vicious about goodsir’s kindness. the world must be as he expects. he finds the arctic beautiful, yes, but when he wishes to communicate with silna he does so with the intent to make a dictionary. take, and document. he wishes to ensure silna’s father’s body is treated well—in a manner he is familiar with, a more anglicised version, where you keep everything on his body—ultimately ensuring that silna loses control of tuunbaq. he deliberately and on purpose poisons jacko because he considers her life to be worth less than the men. he gives david young his death sentence as kindly as possible, but doesn’t bother doing the same for billy gibson, because he perceives gibson as having crossed a line. he derides hickey for his low social class but it’s okay because hickey is doing awful things. right? the person they threaten to make goodsir cooperate is hodgson, the person there with the highest social status. and ultimately he dies with deliberate violent, murderous intent: poison which is seen to mostly target someone young and lower class and misguided, magnus manson. hickey seems perfectly fine. and even in his death, where he looks upon the natural world and sees its beauty, he sees it isolated and scientific and removed from its habitat. wonder within the frame of a museum, of science.

he is the perfect paragon of morality you could champion without harming the empire behind it. funny, that

The Terror (2018) reincarnation AU where Crozier is desperate to find his crew if he can but doesn't know where to begin

by sheer chance he glimpses a social media post with a photograph of DJ Dolleyes and he'd know those eyes anywhere

he goes to the rave (feeling incredibly awkward and out-of-place, it's not his scene, everyone here is twenty years younger than him if not thirty) again and again trying to catch the DJ's notice and find out if he actually remembers everything they went through or if he's just a victim of vivid delusions of watching over a hundred men in his care perish in the Arctic

finally as DJ Dolleyes finishes a set and slips away Crozier catches him on his way out of the venue

cries out "Jopson!" before he can stop himself

DJ Dolleyes halts. waits. slowly turns.

Crozier looks into the face of a young man he'd thought lost to him forever. and sees recognition spark in those pale eyes.

even after all these years of wondering if his crew might also be alive again, Crozier can't find the words to explain how he knows him but is compelled to ask, "Do you remember me?"

as Jopson replies, his tone clipped, "I do, sir."

because he does remember his captain.

I don’t know how I’ve only just noticed this but the commentator during the Alcaraz v Norrie Wimbledon quarterfinal saying that if Norrie makes 50 or 60 more good shots “he might just stand a chance” of beating Carlos is the same energy as Dave K saying that Ned is “quite a good officer when not in a massive tragedy” and I just think that’s very funny

i think a lot about how crozier doesn't care about silna until she leaves him

she rescues him and he immediately tells her we should not be so far north, we must find my men. he doesn't ask. he doesn't even act whatsoever like it's a suggestion. he just expects that she will help him. and then he barely speaks to her until she leaves, at which point he's desperate to go after her— why? because she's the only one who understands what happened to him. still, he wants something from her—now, just her company, but regardless. he doesn't stop to think that she might rather never see him again.

he orders her around like she's one of his crew and she doesn't refuse but that doesn't mean it's right. (besides, kind of hard to refuse or negotiate when you can't speak. she could walk away, but then he would obviously chase after her, and she can't explain herself. easier to just help him, i suppose. what's one more thing, for this man who ruined her life?)
