• kittens born on Terror shown to Ross on warmed plate
• Jopson was captain's steward aboard Terror during Ross expedition
• stewards wait on captains and officers at dinner aboard ships
• ... did Jopson get to be the guy to whip the cloche off the warmed plate and be like "tah dah, kittens for captain!"

ok let's get down to the important questions
this is exam conditions, folks, so show your working out in the tags. also yes, I'm aware there are other members of the crew to consider but these are definitely the top contenders imho; very willing to be proven wrong in the reblogs.

what if i told you his eyes just are Like That all the time
yknow i think about this tiny little scene so much it's probably criminal
Tumblr media
because for one, i read this scene as like, a glimpse into who jopson is off duty, when he isn't tending to his captain. he's hunched over, eating directly out of the can, not particularly concerned with appearances. it's a side of him crozier has probably never seen.
and on top of that, the way jopson and little exchange this knowing glance with each other when that bell rings—because jopson is needed again, and they've all probably heard this bell ring dozens or hundreds of times by now. a steward's duty is never quite done, and jopson just scoops a last bite of mystery meat into his mouth and rushes off to his captain's side without hesitation. his expression seems to say "welp, here we go again," but there's no malice in it. if anything, he looks fond.
it just lives in my brain rent-free because it's such a different jopson than we get for the rest of the series: relaxed, casual, easygoing. when he's around crozier, which he is in nearly every other scene he's in, he's more alert and caring and gentle, consumed by crozier's presence. and between crozier's jopson and hickey's jopson ("my aim's fine, mr. hickey") and this unclaimed jopson, he just drives me insane. i don't even know how to express the point i'm trying to make really, i just think the genuine thomas jopson underneath his rank and role is so interesting to look at. and also how eager and willing he is to come running to crozier at any moment's notice.

It's no secret that I am obsessed with Jopzier. I find the age difference, the servant/master thing, and the power dynamic incredibly hot. Jopson's complete and utter devotion to Crozier is also very fun to play with and drag out and hone to a razor sharp edge. This ship is all about unspoken feelings, social propriety covering up animalistic longings and forbidden love. It's just so much and so good.
Then there's the absolute heart wrenching way the show kills Jopson off. He dies (as all us Terrors are familiar with), lost in a hallucination, dragging himself down a long, imaginary table, stacked with delicious food. Even though he is starving, he shoves the food carelessly out of the way so that he can reach Crozier, who sits at the head of the table, talking with someone out of Jopson's sight. He doesn't appear to notice Jopson is there, and does not look at him or acknowledge him in any way.
This would seem to imply that Jopson wants Crozier's attention and approval (and probably love) more than he wants to eat. More than he wants to live. The message is pretty clear, whether you see it as a parent/child relationship or a searing hot May/December unrequited sexual obsession, it's made obvious that Crozier is vitally important to Jopson's feeling of self worth.
Jopson is so relatable in this, as he is in many things. He's clearly a bit socially off, a bit sycophantic, a rigid perfectionist, and the sort of people pleaser who will almost die to help others. He's so tightly wound and so intense, and virtually all of his tightly wound intensity is focused on serving Crozier. If you have autism or OCPD, Jopson feels intimately familiar.
His death scene brings home to many of us what it was like to grow up in a family where we didn't feel heard, where we were ignored, or where we strove endlessly for approval that was withheld from us. I know what Jopson is feeling in that final scene, and I think many of us do. The yearning to be acknowledged by a parental figure or authority figure that we love or idolize.
To have that person blindly look past us, or turn their head and withhold acknowledgement of us, to essentially abandon us and leave us to proverbially die... and Jopson embodies this fear for many people. We're social creatures. Being left behind by our parent, or our tribe to fend for ourselves in the cold darkness of the void, is a fear I think most of us share.
The writers knew what they were doing when they built Jopson's character around the service of one man, only to make that one man abandon him in his ultimate time of need. They pulled at the deepest, darkest feelings we all have of abandonment, and that was fucked up and impressive of them as horror writers. It also makes for fantastic fic writing, so hats off to The Terror. You hurt me and it made me pound out 500K + of tortured Jopzier fic.

„Not if it’s you.“
Gaaahhhhh this took way too long and I wish I’d gone with a colder color scheme but here we are
Anyways I’m participating in the Terror Bingo btw!! This is for the prompt „Mental Health Issues“ and I know Collins would’ve been the obvious choice but I’m a „edward little gets seasonal depression as soon as the sun is gone for 3 days (maybe also just regular depression during croziers withdrawal when things start going south, please get him out of there)“ truther
I like the thought of Jopson being ever the Steward and looking after his 1st Lieutenant who hasn’t left the bed in several days
(Btw please ignore Joppers hand I’m really trying to improve on that)

This is just gonna be a "brief" little ficlet of the soft Jopkey idea i had, cuz i don't have the energy to write it super detailed and drawn out. Anyway, soft Jopkey coming in!!! (Gonna tag a few people who seemed interested at the end! Hope that's okay!)
❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
It takes place during Crozier's sobering up. I'm thinking about a week in. Maybe longer. Jopson hasn't slept. Has barely been eating. Just small dozing off here and there before jumping back into caring for his Captain.
He's exhausted. Goes down below to grab something. More towels and clean linen probably. He's leaning down, grabbing new sheets, and as he stands he feels dizzy and then he's out like a light. Fainted. Down there in the dark.
He wakes to something soft and warm beneath his head and water being gently pressed to his lips. He swallows greedily, a soft hand wipes at the side of his mouth where the water overflows and drips down his cheek.
"That's it. Slowly." A soft voice above him says. And he knows that voice. His throat clenches and he chokes, dragging himself away from Mr. Hickey, and his... wandering hands. His... warm lap.
He chokes, coughing and hacking til his eyes are watering. He's so tired and disoriented he can't fight Hickey's hands away. One rubbing at his back as he chokes, the other holding his shoulder, attempting to steady him.
He chokes some more, trying to shove Hickey away for a few more moments before giving up. Hickey smiles, softly, the hand from his shoulder moves to his chest.
"Breath, Mr. Jopson. Deep." He instructs gently, his hand still rubbing between Jopson's shoulder. Jopson tries to do as he's told, sucking in air through his nose, deep, his back straightening, his chest puffing, filling with air. He coughs it out, but just twice, before he's breathing again.
"One more." Hickey says, eyes widening. Jopson does as he's told. No coughing this time. He levels Hickey with what he hopes is a glare, frowning and then gasping as pain blooms in his face with the effort.
"Here." Hickey says, tugs him down, places Jopson's head in his lap again.
"What do you think you're-"
"Relax. You need rest." Hickey huffs, cutting him off rudely. But his hands are gentle against Jopson's head, his fingers moving slowly over his skin, pushing his hair out of his face.
"I don't-"
"Shh." Hickey's finger pressed to his lips, briefly, just a touch to cut him off and then gone again, hand back in Jopson's hair.
"You can't care for our beloved captain without taking care of yourself as well." His voice is barely above a whisper, doesn't need to be in such an empty ship. Jopson notes the condescension in Hickey's voice when he speaks about the captain. He ignores it. Flashes of Hickey bent over a table, holding back screams, float through his thoughts and drift away again.
"Just take a moment. For yourself." Hickey sighs, fingers moving gently through his hair now. Jopson can feel his eyelids drooping, getting heavier and heavier.
"I'll wake you if you're needed." Hickey whispers, nails dragging slowly, deftly, against Jopson's scalp. He drifts. Into darkness. No dreams. No nothing. Still vaguely aware of Hickey's hands, warm agaisnt his skin.
"You're being beckoned Thomas."
Hickey's words in his ear have him nearly jumping out of his skin. He hears the bell. Tries to scurry to his feet and the ship tilts before his eyes. But Hickey is there, after a brief struggle of his own to get up, catches him round the waist and keeps him on his feet.
"Don't." Jopson shoves his hands away, Hickey steps back, hands out in front of him in surrender, but he stays close, eyeing Jopson with what might be worry, on another man. He takes a step and wobbles, pushes away the feeling of missing Hickey's hands on his waist, in his hair.
He steadies himself, grabs the linens he came for, offered to him by Hickey. Their hands brush when he hands them over, Hickey's eyes stay on the floor. Jopson nearly makes it to the ladder when Hickey's fingers curl gently around his elbow.
"Oh Jopson?" He turns, and Hickey is close. Much closer than he expects, he stumbles back a step, to the side of the ladder, Hickey follows, his eyes locked on Jopson now. His face, he thinks, no, his mouth.
"You've got some blood. Just... there." His voice sounds far away, like Hickey has drifted off somewhere. He moves fast, his lips pressing to Jopson's top one quick as a flash, and warm, his skin almost burning. And then he's gone again, back where he was, about three feet away. It seems so far.
"You should get cleaned up. For your Captain." Hickey says, nods stiffly, and then he stomps up the ladder, his movements slower than before, his wounds still ailing him.
But his speed doesn't matter. Jopson doesn't move. Just stands there, leaning against the ladder, heart pounding. He raises his fingers to his lips, feels the dried blood under his fingers, must have hit his nose on the way down, and tells himself that's what he's feeling for. The blood.
Tells himself he's certainly not chasing the warmth of Mr. Hickey's skin against his. His lips. Against his. He suppresses a shiver, rubs at his lip til it's clean. Til it hurts. Ignoring the burning he feels behind his eyes.
The bell rings out again. Sharp and loud. Insistent. He hugs the linens to his chest, squeezes them tightly once, and climbs back up out of the dark.

area x is not a place for chit chat
————
nobody asked for this but im sure a few people this will resonate with it. have a The Terror x Southern Reach AU. as a treat. and because it’s eating me alive. partially inspired by this infographic and partially because i recently started rereading these until i can get my hands on absolution. these are some of my all time novels so yeahh the brain rot collided in a big way
anyways
edward little = john “control” rodriguez (because a man naming himself control in a desperate attempt to have any control of his life? yeah that’s neddie af)
thomas jopson = the biologist/ghost bird (yes because i wanted this deranged joplittle au but also bc he’s neurotic enough to pull it off)

TERROR CAMP JOPFACTS
-Jopson feels as though he has to prove himself to Francis and tries to be the very best steward one could possibly be
-Jopson finds comfort in order and a clear hierarchy and felt terrified when he was promoted to lieutenant
-Due to his proximity to Crozier and taking care of him through the withdrawal Liam considers him to be the most isolated crewmember on the whole expedition
-The cow story Francis tells Jopson to comfort him was improvised
-Jopson was nonverbally trying to convey to Little that everything will be fine during his "eating straight from the can" scene during the withdrawal
-He smiles as a coping mechanism when he's distressed in order to hide vulnerability
-He has never told the story of his mothers death before and him telling it to Francis is the first time he truly confides in him
-Jopson sees Hickey as a force of chaos and dislikes him, but still considered his flogging to be gruesome
