crozier doesn’t answer as little is too far gone to understand. he will die within a day or two. instead, crozier sits beside little and puts edward's head on his shoulder. he’ll wait with him, as long as it takes. this is the end of the line. lady silence watches this grim western spectacle a moment, and then turns away.

crozier looks through the camp and comes across an alarming sight: a man is actually sitting up inside one of the halfdowned tents. crozier crawls in to see who it is. it’s little. and he’s alive, his lap full of cold, greasy rags. crozier gently lifts up little’s chin so he can see his face. inexplicably, little’s been pierced with gold chains from various pocket watches. they connect parts of his body to his head. his eyes are open, but he does not recognize crozier.

he says a word, but he is so hoarse, crozier doesn’t understand. little asks his word again and this time crozier understands. crozier sees in all the details how this once handsome, earnest man has been rendered almost inhuman by the disaster. he has fingers missing. several teeth are out. he’s mottled with scurvy bruises. and his eyes stare out of their sockets as if already staring out of death.
