#do I think Bruce took Jason to replace Dick? absolutely not

In his new room - in his new house - Jason searches up for a circus performances and stares at them for hours. First, he watches at them mindlessly, unconsciously curious, and then, he starts to take notes.
He is a street kid, and everything about him screams of that. So, he is nowhere near the grace of these performers on the screen. His arms are not that strong, too, but he is agile, and his legs are much stronger - he can think of something.
He can be just as good as the boy he is replacing.
It is not like someone tells him to match Richard Grayson, and it is not like someone admits that Jason is here to replace the first Wonder Boy, but Jason heard Bruce's conversation with Dick earlier. It was meant not for his ears, but it doesn't matter now.
"So, now what, you exile me, and bring a boy to replace me?!"
Jason is not mad. All of it ‐ adoption papers, the manor, the school - is much more than he ever thought he would get in his life. Being replacement doesn't sound as bad anyway; especially, if his brother is so cool.
So, he makes notes on circus performances and slightly chopes his hair. They are much curlier than Dick's - he has more of a wavy ones, and the only ever look that way, when they get long; his childhood photos with short hair looks too straight - but the cut does its magic.
The next day, Bruce compliments his hair absentmindedly and is positively surprised by his new moves on the patrol, asking where he learnt it from. Jason lies about not remembering, but his cheeks are flashed, and his smile is all about teeth. He can't wait to show it to Dick once they finally get on a mission together.
Expect, when they do, Dick just nods and mutters a light-hearted "good job" before leaving to talk with his team. And Jason knows Dick doesn't want to be mean - he gets it; no one feels good about having a replacement, especially the one that seems so cheap in comparison - but he still cries that night in his pillow, feeling himself a little kid, even if he isn't one. Even if he never was.
Jason wonders if his own replacement would make him understand Dick.
But Jason never gets replaced.
No matter the taunting voice of the Lazarus Pit in the back of his head - that sometimes sounds suspiciously like Talia's; you remain unavenged and replaced - and his own intrusive thoughts that spiral in uneven lines, Jason doesn't think Tim was ever meant to be his replacement. Being replaced means to match the person that was meant to be left behind. And no one asked Tim to be like Jason.
If anything, memory of Jason was thrown under the rag, hidden and locked securely in heads of those who survived. And if they brought Jason up, then it was always an example of what Robin shouldn't do: run away, disobey, and allow emotions to consume you. So, not much of an exemplary original. More like an opposite.
Jason feels an urge to explain that to Tim once; when they sit together on the rooftop, almost like a proper family, instead of broken pieces of someone's idea of a one.
'You could never replace me,' he says, and the instant it leaves his mouth, he knows it came out wrong.
Tim rolls his eyes.
'Yeah, dude. Whatever.'
'No, I mean—' He grits his teeth, scrapping slightly the back of his hand. 'I mean... You could never replace me, because... Because you were always better.'
Tim freezes. His big blue eyes shift in something more confused, and it is almost as if he is not sure how he needs to react — to protest? To agree? To thank him?
Jason doesn't know what to do, too.
He wants to say: it is easy as that, babybird. They wanted to have someone who would have nothing in common with me — someone who could help them to forget about my existence, about the existence of the failed Robin.
But he can't make himself speak again. And he is not sure he wants to stay any longer to hear Tin manging to put his thoughts in the words; he is better than him at this, too, and he almost always sounds convincing.
So, he leaves.
In his room - in the building he owns now - he ruffles his outgrown hair, fluffs up the white streak, and passes by his only remaining photo with Bruce in the frame, on the shelf under the stolen tire.
He still does this semi-circus move in his fights - almost frozen in the air, with his back arched - but he doesn't expect anyone to compliment him anymore.

Bruce can't wake up alone. AKA the batkids prefer sleeping in their dad's bed cuz of various reasons:
Dick started the trend cuz he was a little kid, he was scared, and he was desperate for the connections he had lost. The first time he found himself in Bruce's bed was after a nightmare. He had tugged on Bruce's sheets, sniffling and asking for any comfort the man could give. It was awkward and sad but eventually Dick would crawl into the bed and Bruce would instictivly hold him.
Then Jason showed up and filled that void that older Dick left when the boy grew into a man. Even more hesitant than before, but little sunshine Jason was so warm in his new dad's arms and Bruce was more than happy to shield him from the night. Post death/revival, those nights stopped. The bed was cold again and all those hours of trying to protect his little boy had been wasted.
Tim was different. He was a replacement, a coping mechanism, a mimicry of what Jason once was. Bruce had to be forcibly reminded that Tim was just a kid, too, a traumatized kid who wanted more than anything to be that perfect fit in his arms. When Bruce finally opened up again, Tim was more than happy to fall into his bed at night and feel safe in his embrace.
Damian took months before he willingly let Bruce touch him, let alone nighttime cuddles. Like with Dick, it was nightmares that pushed Damian into his fathers room. Relentless horrible dreams fueled by paranoia. Bruce's bed was his safe space after that, a place he could retreat to for queit and comfort away from his own fears.
Cass never fully expressed why she would climb into Bruce's bed, but it wasn't hard to imagine that a traumatized girl wanted someone to protect her. Even if it's hard to say out loud or even put on a page, warmth and safety is important to her and Bruce is the epitome of that to 90% of Gotham. Even if she's gone by morning, Bruce is glad she's doing what makes her comfortable.
Barbara never really needed Bruce, she has her own father she loves thank you very much, but post patrol sleed deprived delirium does a number on the body and so what if Bruce's bed is the biggest and the comfiest in the manor? Plus, Bruce is a massive heated pillow. He'll never argue with her or send her off because what's he's supposed to say to one of his kids? No? Absolutely not.
Stephanie's own dad wasn't too great of a dad, and Bruce isn't exactly perfect either, but she doesn't hate him. When guilt and anxiety get too much, when thoughts of what could have been swamp her, he's been pretty reliable. A dead asleep Bruce can't complain about her sleep habits anyways.
Sadly Duke is the only mainstream bat kid that i can't think of anything for. He just doesn't seen like the type to ever engage with Bruce as familial-ly as that. Perhaps I need to read more...

Hiii, how are you? I’m new in the Batman fandom, but i saw a lot of people saying that Jason is actually Batman’s favorite child, and when i was reading the comics, i really though that Dick is Bruce absolute favorite, but i saw a lot of posts here on tumblr of the fandom saying is actually Jason and that the batkids all know its Jason, but i don’t know what is canon and what is fanon (quite honestly when it comes about the batfam i don’t like a lot about the fanon version 😭), so i wanted to ask you about it
And sorry if i said something wrong, english is not my first language
Hi and no worries at all!!
Yeah, canonically Dick is Bruce's favorite by a LONG shot and canonically the batkids all know this.
Tumblr media
Infinite Crisis Issue #3
It's says right here in the comics. Really explicitly. But not only that, time and time again, there is clear evidence of Bruce's preferential treatment of Dick over the rest of the batkids.
One time the batboys and Bruce are searching for a guy that kinda is using the Gotham criminals as his subjects. So what they decide to do is split up to narrow him down.

Detective Comics (2016) Issue #1057
But they run into issues because the villains chose a 'divide and conquer strategy"

BRUCE LITERALLY WENT: "I love Dick and all the other not-Dicks equally" !!!!!
As if that's not enough, Bruce's biggest fear is that he's not good enough for Dick.
Bruce's fear about Dick-

Reminder: Joe Chill is Martha and Thomas Wayne's killer. Enough said.
If you want to be even more explicit about Bruce's preference for Dick over Jason it can't be clearer than here:
Bruce reflects on Jason's Robin tenure -
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #428
Something a lot of people don't know/refuse to acknowledge is that Jason canonically did have anger issues. There aren't a lot of parallels between Jason and Dick but one particular thing that DC points out is that Jason and Dick both lost their beloved fathers. The difference is that Dick was able to move on and become cheerful even if he didn't get revenge. Jason wasn't able to get over the loss of his father and became angry. UTRH makes a specific point of talking about this too.

Batman (1940) Issue #645 "He knew that Jason Todd was NOT Dick Grayson."
Do you remember why Jason became Robin?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #416
Bruce wanted Dick. He took in Jason in replacement for Dick. But Jason was not Dick and even on the day he died, all Bruce could think of was that taking in Jason was a mistake.
The batkids are well aware of this. Damian actually calls Jason Bruce's mistake too when he's recounting the story of the robins.
Here's what he says -
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #713
That's Damian's retelling. Tim's is even worse -
Tumblr media
A Lonely Place of Dying
Ouch.
Truthfully Jason is like Bruce's 4th favorite. In order of how much Bruce loves his kids it goes:
Dick
Damian
Cass
Jason/Tim (tie)
Tim/Jason (tie)
Steph
I think there's so much confusion about Jason supposedly being the favorite because Bruce grieved over Jason's that but I think a lot of people are conflating grief and self-blame with love. There have been two significant deaths in the family: Jason and Damian. If you look at how Bruce reacted in each aftermath, it becomes clear that he loves Damian more than he loved Jason.
After Jason's death:
Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #429
Tumblr media
Batman (1940) Issue #431
After Damian's death:
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2011) Issue #21
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2011) Issue #20
He would forcefully make Jason relive the worst day of his life so that his other son could enjoy his.
Bruce's behavior after Jason's death was self-destructive and isolative but his behavior after Damian's death was to beat bloodly every single criminal. His reasoning for beating Dick after Jason's death was "Jason was your replacement. If you hadn't left I wouldn't have had to take him in and he wouldn't have died." His reason for beating Jason after Damian's death was "Your trauma matters so little to mean that all I want is Damian to live again and I couldn't care less about how you feel."
In summary, Jason wasn't Bruce's favorite either as Robin or as an adult. But even if it's not Dick, claiming that Jason is the favorite is so far off that no one is DC would remotely believe it. You would think there would be more analysis on Damian's death in comparison to Jason's because they were two big official deaths but I guess not for some reason. I ran out of image space but yeah there's more than just this overall. This isn't to say that Bruce doesn't love Jason. NO! He very much loves him. But he just doesn't love him the most.
On a different note - coming from someone who went from TT show to YJ to fanfic AND THEN reading comics, I've had relearn a lot about each of the characters. But for people still in the process of transitioning from fanfic to comics or just in the fanfic stage, general rule of thumb when it comes to batfamily content - NEVER trust what people say if they don't provide the evidence for it. People in this fandom are so wild that they'll have you believing the earth is the center of the universe, that you'll fall off the world if you go too far left or right, and that pigs can fly.

Dead on Main Part 12
Masterpost
Jason blinks and his perspective changes. He’s looking down at Danny’s body, he is momentarily overcome by a strange sense of familiarity. He is in his own body again. He sighs deeply and then grins. “Nice to finally meet you.” Jason actually shakes the hand in his before letting go and stretching.
Danny smiles brightly as he watches him. “Great to meet you too!” Danny goes ghost and back in a short burst of flashes, then shakes out his limbs.
“Yeah, you’ve really got to tell me about that.” Jason tells him, waving a hand at his body. The Waynes at the table all watch the exchange in silence. Jazz has joined them fully, sitting down at the table.
“More important things, real fast, we’ll get back to it.” Danny turns to Jazz. “Are Mom and Dad here?”
Jazz shakes her head. “They went out to the store. They repurposed our appliances again, so they went to get replacements.” Danny nods.
“Jason texted that you ran into Vlad, what happened to him? Where is he now?” Danny looked between Jazz and Jason. Jason shrugged.
“We took care of him for the moment. You can deal with him later; I’ll bring him to you.” Danny nods at her.
“Yeah, that creep. I don’t think you should be near him.” Jason advises as Danny goes to sit on a kitchen counter.
All the chairs at the table are taken, so Jason goes in and leans against the doorframe.
“Believe me, I don’t want to be. He’s always trying to kill my dad and marry my mom and adopt me.” Danny makes a gagging sound. “Absolute fruitloop, but he’s my dad’s best friend, so.” Danny shrugs.
“That’s not okay. That is not normal, what is happening here?” All the newcomers look confused. Danny just rolls his eyes and shares a commiserating look with Jazz.
“Well, it’s pretty normal for us. And we’ve been handling it just fine.” Jazz gives Danny a hard look. “Mostly fine.” He amends. “Besides, we both have a lot to discuss. You need ectoplasm, like immediately. In fact, wait here.”
Danny leaves, going down to the basement to grab a vial full of pure ectoplasm from the ghost portal and brings it back to the kitchen. Jason starts when he sees the glowing green liquid.
“Drink this.” Danny says, handing it to him.
Jason just stares at him. Danny groans. “This is going to make you feel so much better you’ll feel bad for doubting me in the first place. You need it or you’ll die. You are dying."
Jason gives him a side eye but drinks the liquid under his family’s watchful eyes.
He does immediately feel so much better. He can feel something in his chest ease that he didn’t realize was tight and strained, but now that it is able to relax it feels like his entire body has dropped a huge weight, a large portion of stress is gone, and he has a sudden surplus of energy. The pit that he can usually feel in the corner of his mind and churning in his gut and gone still and silent.
He smiles wider than he has since he came back from the dead. His family seems overjoyed just looking at him. Nobody else would be able to tell, but even Bruce seems so happy he could cry. Dick is crying.
Jason turns to Danny and just engulfs him in a hug. “I don’t know what you did.” Jason mutters into Danny’s ear. “But thank you.”
Danny hugs back, a smile taking up his entire face. “Anytime.”
Jason lets go and pulls back. “You going to explain?”
Danny lets out a laugh that Jason thinks he could listen to forever.
“Yeah.” He chuckles out. “We have a lot of getting to know each other to do.”
“Can’t wait.”
His family is in the background, excited for him, and Jason is glad that they’re here. Jazz is at the table, giving them both soft smiles. Danny’s smile this time isn’t as large, it’s almost shy. And Jason is looking forward to getting to know him, getting to see every smile Danny has, and hopes he can be the reason for a lot of them.
He has his family, his life back. He can learn to be a better brother. Try and do better with Bruce. He can get to know Jazz, and he has Danny. He has so many possibilities in front of him. And until that moment, Jason had never been so happy to still be alive.

Hi, this is a bit long, but I was just wondering if you would consider posting a thingamajig about a ‘Jason’s attack on titans tower’ AU where Jason says something like “You took my place, took my family, and took my hero name. You’re nothing but a worthless replacement” And Tim is just like “Yea, I thought that was fucking obvious? Did you really have to rub it in though? Also no, you misunderstand, I’m not part of your family in any way shape or form.”
He has that mentality now because in this one Bruce is just really non-communicative with Tim and distant, to the point where Tim has not even a hint of a thought anymore that Bruce might even care a tiny bit. Well Bruce does care, but he’s just so fucking terrible with emotions and worried about Tim’s boundaries that he comes off as not wanting anything to do with him.
Yes. 100%. I'll get to the TT attack in a sec, but what I think would be hilarious is if we had Bruce's POV.
Bruce is researching wikihow guides and reddit posts for how to be a good mentor. He's "spending time" with Tim by patrolling and training him. He's "reassuring him" by giving shoulder pats and "meaningful" eye contact. He's expressing content with Tim by saying "good job" after missions or saying, "You're doing well for someone at your skill level."
Bruce is out here checking off all these boxes for "good parenting," and Tim is thinking that Bruce doesn't approve nor want Tim, only Robin.
So we get Bruce's POV, and then we get Tim's at the Tower. Jason is attacking Tim and Tim is all like, "the fuck you trying to do stating these words as if it's new information? Of course Bruce only sees me as a soldier and replacement."
Jason, in this AU, gets hella confused and concerned. We then get the stereotypical trope of Jason trying to adopt Tim.
Key word there: "trying"
Jason's all like, "I'm your brother. I'll be here for you."
Tim is one, absolutely not on board. Two, thinking this is a weird form of manipulation (since Jason tried attacking him first). And three, just straight up misunderstanding Jason.
Jason also keeps trying to attack Bruce, which isn't helping anybody.
Eventually, Dick ends up getting involved. Both Bruce and Jason are astonished when Dick walks up to Tim and says, "You're my little brother," and Tim accepts those words as is.

18 & 19 for the ask game!!
For the terrifying 🔥 choose violence ask game 🔥… thanks for asking me easy questions.
18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
Really, the fandom is sleeping on Knightfall (including KnightQuest and KnightsEnd) as a whole. So much good material here. I do understand why—it’s a long story from a time when the comics didn’t have their new polished look. So it can be pretty inaccessible. But it represents a significant chunk of time and I feel like it has so many of the things the fandom craves.
You (not you specifically, general fandom you) think Tim should have stayed Robin after Dick took over as Batman? Well, Tim has already been Dick’s Robin! Seriously. After Bruce’s back was broken and Replacement Batman 1 didn’t work out, Dick became Replacement Batman 2. (Oh and he has a huge complex about not being the first choice for Replacement Batman.) So there’s a period of time where Dick is Batman and Tim is Robin, and I feel like it’s really underexplored.
Or, you want Tim to feel trapped into holding a violent Batman back, to the point of being injured by Batman? Knightfall has that for you too, no need to make Bruce worse than he was. Before Dick was Replacement Batman 2, Jean-Paul Valley was Replacement Batman 1. But JPV had brainwashing in place known as The System, resulting in him growing too violent against criminals and choking Tim when Tim tried to stop him.
Tumblr media
Tim cared about Jean-Paul Valley. Trained him. Trusted him. And it’s not entirely Jean-Paul’s fault—there’s brainwashing involved. But Tim got attacked very violently by his friend. Who was wearing the Batman suit. There’s this progression as JPV gets worse and worse. And Tim knows it’s his responsibility to hold down the fort, so he tries so hard to keep his Batman under control. But it doesn’t work.
He’s got to develop some form of trauma from that. And yet, I struggle so much to find any fanfiction addressing this era.
(Speaking of which, if anyone has any reccs for Tim as Jason or JPV’s Robin I’d be super grateful!)
19. you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like...
I am ashamed to admit I have read a decent amount of Nothing Butt Nightwing and will probably read more.
It’s horrifically out of character. It’s DC’s problems with sexualization in a nutshell. The plotlines make no sense.
But something in me finds it really, really funny. I saw a few bizarre panels from it, looked it up, and…yeah.

Summary:
They still hadn't looked at each other. It was starting to get a bit creepy.
"So you are satisfied, living like this?" She asked, with the slightest twitch of displeasure.
Quickly, Drake's eyes flashed over each of them, and he nodded. "Enough."
"Are you necessary?" She followed immediately, something dangerous in her tone, and there was the quickest flash of fear in Drake's eyes.
"Enough." He repeated firmly. She scoffed, but didn't say anything.

Summary:
“You’re crying.”
That’s the Red Hood, standing in the doorway into the hall, a hulking figure filling the frame, head tilted in question and hands on a gun that’s pointed to the floor. He looks uncertain, head tilted to the side like a goddamn bird.
“What?” Tim asks, because Tim is confused– he knows this is Jason Todd, kinda hard to miss with the red helmet and when the dude tried to blow up Dick and Bruce about a week earlier in the same outfit, but what the actual fuck is he doing in San Francisco–
“You’re crying.” Red Hood repeats, forgoing a one handed grip on his weapon to gesture to his– well– his everything.
Tim moves his hand up to his cheeks because he is definitely not crying over something as stupid as his dinn–
Huh.
Okay.
Maybe he is.

He took a second to look down at his coffee mournfully.

Summary:
“Replacement.”
Tim freezes, gaze still locked on Jack’s prone, silent form sprawled out on the floor, and pulls the phone back to look at the number.
It’s kind of funny, he thinks hazily. Of course he would accidentally kill his dad and then mistakenly call Jason, of all people.

If anyone asked the Batfamily which Robin had the funniest ’joining the family’ story? Well, everyone would start with, “Well it seemed like Jason had the spot taken for good after having the audacity to try and jack the Batmobile’s tires and hit Bruce with his tire iron.” And then they’d say, “But then tiny Tim decided to try and steal the whole thing.”
Or: When Tim is 11 he figures it’s not hurting anyone if he. Ya know. Takes a picture in the Batmobile. But then the power goes to his head and all of a sudden he’s hacking the Batmobile and tearing through Gotham on a rescue mission.

“I stole fifteen before Clark told me to stop,” Tim said. “I did not stop. Those aren’t even all of them, I have more upstairs.”
“How many Superboy shirts is too many Superboy shirts?” Jason pondered.

Bruce had told him to take a break from Robin in order to spend some time at home with his dad, and Tim can’t say no to that. He knows Bruce is probably glad to be rid of him for a short while.
And he can handle discipline. This is a Tim Drake problem, not a Robin problem anyway. There’s no need for Bruce to know anything.

A idea- Tim ideas?
I feel like Tim has the normal photos he shows others and the ones he took of the bats then there's just the ones he never shows anyone or is just random.
----
Dick: aw Tim this is such a good photo
Tim: really you like it?
Dick: yeah I do- oh what's this?
Tim: oh probably just another photo- wait no don't look at that!
Dick: is this younger me in my room?! How did you get this?! How did you get past the security?!
------
Jason: hey what's this picture of?
Tim: what picture?
Jason: this one
Tim: ohh that's from the time I fell off a fire escape, took a photo mid air.
------
I fully believe Tim would break in and sneak around the manor even before he was Robin, no one caught him and he'd have very close calls with Alfred.
Alfred definitely knew someone was breaking into the manor but never figured it out but he had some suspicions especially since it stopped once Tim became Robin.
And there's just a bunch of random blurred photos of every time Tim would have to run, hide or whenever he would fall.
------- little rant down here can skip if you want-----
I honestly loved the idea of Tim having some kind of imposter syndrome in the batman like not feeling part of the family and being a replacement for Jason, like from another post I've seen which you probably seen where they speak about Bruce calling Tim Jason which is a brilliant thought that I honestly wished I thought of earlier but I never really thought about it much. (Forgot who was the creator of this post I'm talking about)
I feel like Tim wouldn't tell anyone about this that he probably sees it as normal until it happens in front of someone like Bruce calling him Jason during a mission on the coms or maybe both Jason and Tim are in trouble and instead of Tim everyone goes for Jason. (I always thought it was a nice idea for Tim fics to focus around this idea and I always liked watching them go through the process)
I could see Tim being absolutely overjoyed having his own team and friend group I think he'd probably be super protective over them especially with the bats like he wouldn't like then to meet the other bats he would ban them from talking to any of the other bats if it's not for a mission or anything. (I'll probably make a continued post about the YJ and Tim later)

Something has been bugging me recently. Do you ever notice how people (particularly Jason stans) go on about how Tim victim blame's Jason for his own death, but fail to mention how Alfred and Bruce are guilty of doing the same thing in the past? Why do these two (especially Alfred) get a pass?
LMAO LIKE... EVERYONES DONE IT. BRUCE ALFRED DICK BABS *SELINA* OF ALL PEOPLE ONE TIME... actually id have to double check that one idr exactly what she said about jason it might have just been that hes unhinged (<- also a thing everyones said at some point) but like. everyones freakin done it. or at least *implied* it.
tim is a special case for a reason though--and ill come back to bruce and alfred later--and its not just bc fandom wants a scapegoat to pin All The Victim-Blaming on. on a meta level tim was specifically created to be jasons opposite, and to ~rehabilitate the robin role and make robin palatable again to modern readers. (and to be clear this wasnt bc readers didn't like jason specifically--it was the idea of robin at all, and to a lesser extent just replacing the orig. jason just took on the mantle at a really unfortunate period in comics culture.) so the comparisons to jason are baked in right off the bat. and tim has to be "better". tim had to prove that a robin was necessary so that dc could keep having one, he had to justify it so that the blame didnt fall on bruce for getting a child killed (or yk even just out there fighting crime at all). theres also an element of class dynamics thats. i mean. jason was a homeless street kid and tims this fancy little distinctly upper middle class kid who replaces him, without derailing to get too deep into that the optics already arent fucking great.
but tims creation aside, just as far as how often it comes up... tim also takes the role of robin really seriously, and its everything to him, so he spends a lot of time thinking about it, what it means to wear the uniform & fulfil the role. so hes the one whos most frequently in the position to be thinking about jason, after bruce. so tim winds up being the one pushing the bulk of the bad/angry/impulsive robin narrative retcon dc wanted to push bc... its the most directly relevant to him. bruce doesnt have much narrative need to think about jason "failing" or not being good enough until under the red hood... except to be like "i dont have to worry about tim bc hes not like jason." lmao. and then you have tim who does not want to get killed, like jason did, so he spends time thinking about how to not end up like jason. which is a fundamental misunderstanding of how being a victim of murder works but i think understandable thing for a child replacement of another dead child to latch onto (particularly one as prone to arrogance & god-complex-itude as Our Timmy, lol). and both on a meta level and in-universe this is about shifting the blame off of bruce and onto the victim because tim needs to keep filling the role hes filling without it being bruces fault that jason died in the first place, bc reckoning with batman and child endangerment is not smth the comics had ever really planned on doing in a serious way.
but as for why singling tim out over bruce and alfred-- the kind of ppl who do this already generally think bruce sucks past the point of being interested in ~holding him accountable~ for absolutely anything... like "bruce sucks, everyone knows he sucks, enough said." i think the logic is generally like "if tims not a total shithead like bruce, then why is he doing shithead stuff like bruce does :/" and then pinning it all on tim as opposed to considering like "hey uhhh do you think maybe hearing stories about jason from bruce influences how tim thinks of jason over the years." if that makes sense
as for alfred. people do not want alfred to have any interiority or to ever have been mean or wrong bc then theyd have to actually think about the fact that bruce has a 24/7 domestic servant in his employ, which is just the. tip of the iceberg when you start thinking about alfred as a full character and not a convenient cardboard cutout to prop up whoever the narrative needs him to. also alfreds role in almost every batman narrative is strictly as support, almost no agency within the story to have a meaningful impact, and people generally respond to the character in kind.
finally i think tim mmmmight be the only character at least as of the reboot who ever talked *to jason* outloud style about certain things relating to jasons death... this answer is already getting too long so i dont want to get into depth about titans tower. but tt 2003 #29 is a great example of the comics pitting tim and jason against each other to make Jason look worse by comparison--for all that tim doesn't actually *say* anything victim blaming jason for his death, *and* for all that jason totally kicks tims ass in the fight and its not even close, on a meta level the story is 100% presenting jason as the bad robin, the robin who failed, Unlike Tim Drake, A *Good* Robin. (i accidentally reread the issue ... im going to make a post about it later probably. god i wish this fucking issue had been good)
but yeah i could probably go on and on even further but yeah, i think thats where people are coming from when they single timmy out. tim only exists at all bc of jason n would be fundamentally unrecognizable without having been crafted to be the anti-jason. and on top of that he has repeatedly been used by dc to make jason look worse (or rather jason was used to make tim look better), and a lot of my fellow jason stans understandably resent tim for it. i however am built different, and want them to kiss.

Disproportionate Retribution Poll Round 4 Side B:
Jason Todd's (Batman/DC comics) Disproportionate Retribution:
"Crime 1: (metatextually it was being a child/boring/annoying/not Dick Grayson/whatever) being suspected of murder, running away, naivety/disobedience (in an attempt to save his surprise mother)
Punishment: (metatextually: vote to kill) fired, sold out by his mother, tortured by the Joker, blown up, and eventual death via smoke inhalation
Out of proportion: it is sooooo likely that he didn't even kill that guy in the first place. He was also like. A 15 year old boy at the time. Also just out of proportion on account of being child death and torture. He comes back later, which later leads to.
Crime 2: non-fatally shooting a crime boss, but being suspected of murder about it AGAIN
Punishment: getting the brakes beat off of him by his dad
Out of proportion: A: he was following the rules. B: Batman should have verified what was going on BEFORE doing anything. C: That's his DAD
Crime 3: at least he actually killed people
Punishment: (basically a) lobotomy via fear toxin
Out of proportion: it's non-consensual body/function modification. Any spike in adrenaline lead to a panic attack (you know what also causes adrenaline spikes? Fear/panic.). Comic book science was the only thing saving him from a heart attack. Even outside of that, being unable to properly fight or flee nearly got him killed again anyway. Not to mention it was Bruce back at it (in an altered state, but still)
Yes he committed actual crimes/did bad shit but literally some of the worst stuff happens when he does the LEAST. Worse people also get less for more."
Jonathan Sims' (The Magnus Archives) Disproportionate Retribution:
"He took a job as an Archivist with absolutely no qualifications and was mean to his coworkers.
Then he got eaten by worms, stabbed by the incarnation of madness, chased by a monster that had replaced his friend, framed for murder, burnt to third degree, sent plummeting for a 20 minutes long fall, almost got his throat slit by a police officer who kidnapped him, was kidnapped again by mannequins for a month, was later kidnapped a third time by two serial killers, exploded, had two of his ribs removed, went into a coffin of endless terror, saw a sun that would have made blind and mad any other, was made evil and forced to kickstart the apocalypse against his will.
I think that speaks for itself.
Poor Jon."

So recently on tiktok I saw that one scene from the Titans show where Rachel accuses Jason of drawing crucifixes on her mirror and the others essentially start adding on to it when HE DIDN'T DO IT BY THE WAY and I was reminded of why I have a love hate relationship with the show.
And one part of that is Kory and Rachel's characters. The show really took two badass besties, made them have a mother/daughter relationship and then have them be absolute assholes to any and everyone they didn't vibe with. When in the comics or other shows they're calm and collected and nice and bubbly.
And yeah Kory's beautiful and to this day I'd die for Anna Diop, but wow I hated her character when she interacted with Jason. She was always so patient with Gar and Rachel but never Jason. Did you really decide to stop being a mentor after two kids? And no one else was there. Hank was the being the bitch he is, Dawn was just there and Donna was just like "why Jason?😕" and Dick was well a dick.
I mean I get it, not a fan of his replacement, got the issues with Bruce, figuring out his relationship with the team yada yada yada. But you mean to tell me Jason had no one's support on that team?? (Aside from Gar theire little bestie moments were so cute). And when strange things happen when Rose shows up why are we looking at Jason? Why aren't we using critical thinking and looking at the new person? The daughter of Deathstroke?? Did we loose all ability to use common sense?
But the one that actually made me stop watching for a couple weeks was when Kory was talking about Jason's death and was like "this is an example of what not to do" knowing goddamn well if anyone said such a thing about Rachel she'd go ballistic. And nobody said anything? Like hey, let's maybe not indirectly call the dead KID incompetent right after his death, I know you're new to earth but its called decency.
And then to AUDACITY for all of them to act surprised when he comes back as Red Hood and wants to kill them? Hell I would've gone to Bruce, grabbed his contingency plans and put them to use because ain't no way I'm the bad guy after you assholes assholed a little too close to the sun.
Like the show really ran with "we made him the villain but its still his fault". Part of the reason Jason's death was a tragedy was because he was HAPPY, and I think the show forgot that.
Like I would've killed to see Rachel, Gar and Jason as a little trio doing shit together, perfect opportunity to be besties. And then see them mourning him when he dies and Dick would have to convince them not to go after the Joker, yeah I'd love to see that. Not this.
In conclusion, Titans Jason deserved better, I hope Kory slips down the stairs, I'm praying Rachel has a migraine and I'm still pissed they didn't even apologize when they found out it wasn't Jason messing with them. AND THEY DID IN FACT FIND OUT.

Oh I was absolutely going with them Jason Finds Out During TT route. I think it would be especially funny if he's heard horror stories from Rouges and his own Henchmen that Robin The Third is some kind of demon that Batman summoned on accident. There are some rumors about how the demon feeds off of grief or anger or vengeance because it's illusions of being g a human are stronger when the Bat is there so *clearly* it is taking its power *from* the Bat. Others say that Nightwing summoned it so that it would keep Bruce on a leash without the first Robin having to come back. Some say it was some person in Gothem who did it or that it was the combined form of the many curses on the city.
All Jason knows is that when his replacement turned around, it's head luled to the side just an inch or two, like a puppet on strings that had to much slack on that one string. Jason manages to shoot one of its arms but instead of a spray of blood, it is broken shards of porcelain and sand. His hits feel like he's punching a solid wall but some do leave visible cracks in Tim. This Thing in a Robin Costume could not ever be human. He knows because when he left, he took a handful of sand in a vile to see if he could figure out what it is. Jason still has that vile to this day, the only proof he has that Tim isn't a human. Sometimes he will set it on a flat surface and watch the sand in it make it slowly roll towards whatever direction Tim is in.
As for how he heals, that's to the magic that animates him, all Tim needs to do is hold his pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle and after a few moments the piece he's holding will weld itself back into place. Also his sand will slowly come back to him, attracted like a magnet and he can tell where all his sand in instinctually. He let's Jason keep the vial of it as it's basically an unhacklable Jason Tracker. The sand isn't fast at moving towards him, roughly about the pace of a snail or sloth. It's certainly moving but just getting from downtown to the Batcave could take his sand a week. Also the pull isn't super strong, gaining about as much force as a particularly stubborn ant.
Ras took half a pound of Tim's sand instead of his spleen and Tim would very much like his sand back.
As for Cass knowing, she 100% does. Tim has shown her his true gorm and when she asked why he didn't show the others, Tim replied, "they wouldn't understand. They would worry over things that aren't problems and try to fix things I already fixed and end up breaking those things."
Eventually the Bats must find out though, and when Dick asks if that means they need to do special things to keep Tim from dying to Magic Users, Tim laughs and laughs like Dick has told the funniest joke in the world. When he calms down, he asks a question of his own, "Dick. How could I possibly die if I have never been alive in the first place? I am simply an object enchanted to move and speak. I am no more alive that the AI Babs uses to scan the internet for pictures of us. I am no more alive than a character in a video game. At most, at *most* I can be compared to some of Ivy's plants that she uses to attack us. I can not be killed for I have never been alive. Broken, yes, but that I can fix. I simply have to be put back together like a jigsaw puzzle."
Oof. Poor Dick is going to have to figure out how to feel about that statement. Tim not being alive at all and comparing himself to a video game or AI might fuck with Dick's sense of self, sentience, etc. I would love to see how they all logic, cope, and understand identity after this.
I do love the idea that the sand tries to make its way back to Tim, but he knows where it is at all times. Jason has an estimated location of Tim (N, S, E, W), but Tim has like coordinates.
I wonder if Cass would try dancing with Tim. Since his movements are different, perhaps she would enjoy learning to dance in a way that's similar to how he moves? It could be eerie and fun for her.
I'm curious how Ra's would feel about Tim and his sand in this. Why did he keep the sand? Does it look distinct from other sand? Was it just cause it was part of Tim and Ra's thought he might be able to use it? Also, does he attempt that shit he did with his Nyssa since Tim probably can't reproduce?

"I never hated you." Though Dick could absolutely understand why Jason would think that. He'd been distant at best, refusing to have much if anything to do with the boy Bruce had - at the time apparently - replaced him with. His problems had been with Bruce, never Jason; he'd just been shit at showing it. "I was a stupid kid. I was frustrated and angry at Bruce, and I took it out on you. And I shouldn't have."
And he'd been kicking himself for it for years. Dick had only just started pulling his head out of his ass, making attempts to reach out, and then he'd been called away on that mission by the Titans, and then…well. Then Jason was gone. He sighed and shook his head. "…He didn't even tell me. About what happened. Didn't even try. No voicemail, nothing. I found out by accident. Two weeks late."
Dick's jaw tightened at the memory. He hadn't even known about the damn funeral. "I came back as soon as I knew. Found Bruce going off the rails. Tried to pull him back. Tried to tell him you wouldn't've wanted that. We fought. Over that. Over the fact that fucking clown was still walking free…"
That was beyond anger in Dick's voice then; that was pure hatred, his hand closing into a tight fist on the railing. "After what he'd done to you…to Babs…and Bruce hadn't done a goddamned thing. But he was perfectly fine with hospitalizing petty crooks and purse snatchers." Okay, that was a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. Dick just sighed and shook his head.
"So we fought. And he kicked me out. Told me to give my key to Alfred on my way out the door. So I got a hotel room for two weeks," both because he'd had to arrange a place to live, and because he'd had some unfinished business to tend to here in Gotham, "left for Bludhaven and never looked back. We wouldn't have ever spoken again if it wasn't for Tim, and even then…" He shrugged. "Only when necessary."
And now Bruce was gone. Things unsaid would forever remain unsaid. That was true for all of them, of course, but it was weighing fairly heavily on Dick these days.
Indeed he didn’t need to do anything, that was an option as much as the choice he took of looking for Dick and deciding to keep him company. Jason actively chose to go out of his way to make sure Dick was okay to a reasonable extent, not only for himself, but for the rest of their family.
Was it that hard to figure that he cared? Sure, it was in his own way and it wasn’t always as clear, but Jason thought that his actions were a good indication of that.
He heard Dick talk about what happened and how his relationship with Bruce was tarnished by Jason’s death and Bruce’s poor, it turned what was just okay into a strained relationship. His eyes followed Dick’s gaze and he thought to have seen the scar of his face reflect in Dick’s blue irises, and he shook his head to send away the cold and tingling sensation that settled inside his stomach — there was nothing bad happening, he didn’t have reasons to feel anxious, Jason repeated inside his head again and again to stop stuff from emerging.
“Why?” It was the only question that came out of him once his thoughts were organized again. “You hated me. So why?” Aside from him being just a kid, Dick had nearly no reasons to he upset with Bruce, ir so was what Jason believed in.

Maybe for a Christmas one for night nurse, Jason makes sure the families in her apartment building all get something whether it's like new coats or toys or whatever since she doesn't like taking money herself and likes helping her neighbors? I just think she would enjoy if he made sure people who really need it are taken care of. I absolutely adore your stories
"Why are we doing this?" Tim huffed, tossing a bag down.
"Because, Replacement," Jason said, "Y/N won't take money... So we're gonna spread a little Christmas cheer."
"Coats? Toys?" Steph asked, poking through bags, "Giving up being a crime lord to be fucking Santa, Jay?"
"Got my guys making toys as we speak," he snorted, handing each of them a list, "Where's Dickhead and the Demon? We're running out of-"
"Calm down, Little wing," Dick said strolling across the rooftop with Cass, Damian, and Bruce in tow. "Brought some extra hands."
Jason felt his cheeks burn when Cass patted his arm and took a spot next to Steph to help her haul stuff and Bruce gave him a knowing, slightly smug look. "She won't let me pay her," he explained, feeling stupid.
"It's a nice thing to do, Hood," Bruce said, taking a list.
"He even had his guys make sure not to use lead paint," Steph chirped, giggling with Cass. "Right?"
"Right," he snorted. "The coats aren't even flammable."
"You thought of everything, Little Wing," Dick said grinning.
"But," Cass mused out loud as Jason retreated with his stuff to pass out, "Did he remember a present for Y/N?"
"Shit," Jason muttered. "God damn it."
"Language," Bruce called, suppressing a smile with difficulty.
