as someone who has been scarred for life by experiences at gay bars, i need people to understand it's beyond tacky to mock people who want queer spaces beyond queer bars- it's dangerous.
let me explain. i went to 2 of my local queer bars a lot last year, as much as i was able to despite being poor. i witnessed a fist fight that was so bloody that ended up with a transmisogynistic drag queen getting hit in the head with a metal baton. the sight caused me to uncontrollably throw up in the bathroom of the club because of how gruesome it was. they had to close down the club and forard people out the back door because of how out of hand this person got- he was screaming transmisogynstic slurs and phrases at the bouncers were were transfem.
i was also sexually assaulted at these places, i was repeatedly groped by several people who i was not interacting with in the first place who found me attractive and decided physically grabbing me on numerous occasions was the way to get my attention. being femme in a queer bar is dangerous even if the people groping you are gay men.
i am also a recovering addict who dealt with alcohol issues in the past and could be considered a recovering alcoholic. i don't want to be around alcohol. i don't want to smell it. it triggers awful memories and also sometimes makes me consider getting a drink, but i can't have one, because the medications i take will cause a fatal reaction- i don't want to be tempted to drink, because it will kill me.
it's not right to mock someone or call them childish or whatever for not wanting to go to a club. whenever alcohol is involved, people's inhibitions are gone and they will do whatever. this includes fighting. i witnessed several other fights. just because it's a queer bar doesn't mean there won't be fights. and it especialyl doesn't m ean that you won't get groped or assaulted because, like i said, since alcohol is involved and it's a bar, there's a high chance this can and will happen.
queer people are not inherently safe angels to be around by virtue of being queer. there are still transphobes in queer bars. tranny chasers come to these bars. homophobic lesbians show up and lesbophobic gay men show up. drag queens and performers bring their cishet friends and family to support their shows. these are not perfect havens. they are not safe. we should not force other queers to interact with inherently dangerous spaces if these are supposed to be our safe spaces.
also these spaces are not friendly to people with disabilities; wheelchair users have nowhere to go especially when it's very crowded. other mobility aids get kicked and knocked over. neurodivergent people can get overstimulated by the deafening music very quickly. photosensitive people can have seizures due to the strobing lights. people with emetophobia like me run the risk of running into those types of triggers. people who are overstimulated by intoxicated people have no choice but to deal with it. dancing is one of the only activities to do other than drink and not many disabled (or even abled) people can dance for extended periods of time comfortably.
not to mention these spaces are not geared toward aromantic or asexual people at all, either. there is a long list of reasons why bars should not be our primary venues of interaction with one another. they serve a specific purpose- for people who want to cruise- but for the rest of us, it's really crucial that we have spaces that provide meaningful interactions with other queers on other levels of our identities.
some people just want to hang out with other queers in a quiet environment and craft, or shop, or drink coffee, or read books together, or just about any other activity on planet earth, and that's not "lame" or "cringy" or bad in any way- these are extremely normal and necessary parts of human interaction that we all require and crave and it's normal to want to do healthy, domestic things with other queers. we need this in our lives.
please take it seriously when people attempt to create queer spaces that don't involve alcohol and bars. it's necessary for our survival and well being as a community.

I hope it turns out that Maggie is "just" a human. I hope it turns out that there is absolutely nothing supernatural or occult or celestial or whatnot about her, fuck, I hope it turns out it's NINA instead.
Fuck, I'm trying very hard not to be frustrated and upset, but I am. I am because it's been over a month and people are still taking Maggie's clearly neurodivergent, and more specifically autistic, behaviour and twist it into "oh look no normal human is like this she's so creepy she must be a demon or an angel" like are you LISTENING to yourselves?
YES she talks differently sometimes, yes she's emotional, yes she did ONE FUCKING SPELLING MISTAKE while she was literally sobbing her eyes out. People are like that, you know. People that don't drink and that didn't go to parties and don't socialize well exist. I'm that person.
I had absolutely ZERO thoughts about Maggie being a celestial because to me, she isn't weird. There is nothing off about her. She's like me, I felt SEEN, I felt recognized and acknowledged.
The worst part is that people LOVE headcanoning Muriel or Aziraphale or Crowley as autistic but as soon as it's not something people can either infantilize or twist into something else, they hate it. Muriel gets praised for the same traits that have people calling Maggie a villain.
Can we stop doing that? Can we stop taking people who are weird or visibly disabled or different and shoving them into the non-human box? Do you have any idea how dehumanizing that is for people who are like those characters?
We had canonically non-binary characters this season that are human, so why, and please fucking tell me WHY, is it impossible in your minds to have disabled humans around? Why does anyone slightly weird have to be a supernatural being?
Just because Maggie's behaviour isn't played off as a joke? Because she is allowed to be a middle-aged, lesbian autistic woman? Because you cannot infantilize her like you can with Muriel?
Please tell me because I don't fucking know.

bio & expectations (for me) here.

Happy Lesbian Visibility week! I really wanted to get more than one Vaggie and Charlie drawing done but alas the disability is disabling me and I was only able to produce one, but still!
I used my redesigns for them cause I wanted to give yall a little sneak peak before I put my redesigns out all together (Angel, Vaggie, Charlie are done and Husk is started everyone else is planned I just haven't executed the drawings yet) I also yes I will be redoing people other than just the main cast cause ngl Adam, Lilith and the Seraphims bothered me REALLY badly, I don't HATE their designs I just wish they were a bit more interesting/they have some aspects I don't think are really the best choices. Please don't come for me please I do like Hazbin Hotel I think it's a really interesting concept but some of the ways they've executed things I don't think are exactly the best ways to go about it.
Anyways Redesigns and Hazbin HC's to come, I'm also finishing up a geodshipping drawing since I think they're so silly and I'm also working on something for Pixal because one day I randomly got the urge to draw this loc hairstyle a girl at my school has and I ended up with a Pixal drawing cause of course.
PEACE OUT FOR NOW!

I find it funny how Hazbin Hotel and its stans praise its representation so much but when you truly look it into
The "representation" ain't good on many levels
The main lesbian couple? So little chemistry people prefer the straight ship between a misogynistic villain and his henchwoman
The gay men? They are simply fetishized to please the fujoshi creator and her fans
Chubby people? The only main one we have is written to be annoying and that's it
POC? You can't even tell that some characters are black
Representation of religion? You could change the names of the characters that come from the bible almost all the versions and nothing would change because Christianity is treated more like an aesthetic
People who are victims of SA, Work placement abuse, and even people who harm themselves as a way to cope? It gets downplayed a lot even Angel's whole arc gets diminished when it can already end if Charlie just asks Lucifer to kill Val BUT NOT EVERYONE HAS A FRIEND WITH HIGH STATUS AND POWERS VIVZIE
This is why I end up losing interest in shows when "representation" is a selling point cuz it feels like it never feels about representation but gaining brownie points
I'm actually sitting here trying my legitimate best to think of anything Viv's done a good job of representing.
I'd say adoption, except Loona's physically abusive to Blitzo and it's played for laughs. Maybe disability, kinda sorta, except for those disgusting joke subtitles for the actual hearing impaired.

Some books and stories that I think are worth reading in conversation with Yellowjackets
Shirley Jackson, all works but especially The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Jackson might or might not need any introduction in this fandom. The Sundial is her take on doomsday preppers, Hill House is of course her haunted house novel (one of the classics of that genre), and Castle has a female protagonist who makes Shauna look like a plaster saint.
Flannery O'Connor, The Violent Bear It Away. O'Connor's work has some of the most pervasive darkness and brutality of any major American writer (maybe Ambrose Bierce comes close), and the second of two novels that she completed before her death is no exception. (The first, Wise Blood, is also very good; the intended third, Why Do the Heathen Rage?, only exists as a fragmentary short story.) Francis Marion Tarwater is kidnapped and raised in the woods by his great-uncle, who is convinced that Francis is destined to be a prophet. The great-uncle's death commences a bizarre adventure involving auditory hallucinations, sinister truckers, an evil social worker, arson, developmental disabilities, and baptizing and drowning someone at the same time. Content warnings for all of the above plus rape. O'Connor is also a fairly racist author by today's standards--she was a white Southerner who died in 1964--so keep that in mind as well.
Ruth Ozeki, The Book of Form and Emptiness. Teenage protagonist is schizophrenic and also a channel for a genuinely supernatural force; well-intentioned but poorly-considered efforts to treat one of these issues make the other worse. Sound familiar? There are supporting characters who are affectionate parodies of Slavoj Zizek and Marie Kondo. A minor character is a middle-aged lesbian who cruises dating apps for hookups with much younger women. Some people find this book preachy and overwritten, but I really like it and would plug it even if I didn't because the author is someone whom I've met and who has been supportive of my own writing.
Yukio Mishima, The Decay of the Angel. Can be read in translation or in the original Japanese. This is the fourth and last book in a series called The Sea of Fertility but I wouldn't necessarily recommend the first three as particularly YJ-ish; Decay is because it deals at great length with issues of doubt and ambiguity about whether or not a genuinely held, but personally damaging, spiritual and religious belief is true. There's also more (as Randy Walsh would put it) lezzy stuff than is usual for Mishima, a gay man. Content warnings for elder abuse, sexual abuse of both children and vulnerable adults in previous books in the series, forced abortion in the first book if you decide to read the whole thing from the beginning, and the fact that in addition to being a great novelist the author was also a far-right political personality.
Howard Frank Mosher, Where the Rivers Flow North. An elderly Vermont lumberjack and his Native American common-law wife refuse to sell their land to a development company that wants to build a hydroelectric power plant. Tragedy ensues. I haven't read this one in a long time but some images from the movie stick in my mind as YJ-y. Lots of fire, water, and trees.
Leonard Cohen, Beautiful Losers. Yes, this is the same Leonard Cohen who later transitioned into songwriting and became a household name in that art form. Beautiful Losers is a very weird, very horny novel that he wrote as a young man; it deals with the submerged darkness and internal tension within Canadian and specifically Quebecois society. One of the main characters is Kateri Tekakwitha, a seventeenth-century Iroquois convert to Catholicism who was probably a lesbian in real life (although Cohen unfortunately seems unaware of this). This one actually shows up YJ directly; the song "God Is Alive, Magic Is Afoot" that plays in the season 2 finale takes its lyrics from a particularly strange passage.
Monica Ojeda, Jawbone. Can be read in translation or in the original Spanish. Extremely-online teenage girls at a posh bilingual Catholic high school in Ecuador start their own cult based on such time-honored fodder as Herman Melville novels, internet creepypasta (no, this book does not look or feel anything like Otherside Picnic), and their repressed but increasingly obvious desire for one another. The last part in particular gets the attention of their English teacher, whose own obsessive internalized homophobia grows into one of the most horrifying monstrous versions of itself I've ever read. Content warning for just about everything that could possibly imply, but especially involuntary confinement, religious and medical abuse, and a final chapter that I don't even know how to describe. Many thanks to @maryblackwood for introducing me to this one.
Jorge Luis Borges, lots of his works but especially "The Aleph," "The Cult of the Phoenix," and "The South." Can be read in translation or in the original Spanish. The three works I list are all short stories. The first deals with mystical experiences and the comprehensibility (or lack thereof) of the universe, the second with coded and submerged references to sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular, the third with leaving your well-appointed city home for a ranch in the middle of nowhere and almost immediately dying in a knife fight, which is surely a very YJ series of things to do.
H.P. Lovecraft, "The Colour out of Space," "The Dunwich Horror," "The Dreams in the Witch House," and "The Thing on the Doorstep." Lovecraft in general needs no introduction--the creepiness, the moroseness, the New Englandness, the purple heliotrope prose, his intense racism (recanted late in life but not in time to make any difference in his reception history) and the way his work reflects his fear of the Other. These short stories are noteworthy for having settings that are more woodsy and less maritime than is usual for Lovecraft's New England, for overtones of the supernatural rather than merely the alien, for featuring some of his few interesting female characters, and for their relative lack of obvious racial nastiness. Caveat lector nevertheless.
Herman Melville, Moby-Dick. It's Moby-Dick. Once you realize that Captain Ahab is forming a cult around the whale and his obsession with it you can't unrealize it.

Day 30: Original Pride Flag (Gilbert Baker) Bluntnose Sixgill Shark
ID in alt Click for higher quality
I chose to pair this flag with this shark because the bluntnose sixgill shark belongs to the oldest-known shark lineages. The original pride flag -created by Gilbert Baker in 1978 and commissioned by gay activist Harvey Milk- had 8 stripes (pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo, and violet) instead of 6 (pink was removed for fabric shortages, and turquoise to make an even number). Although the 6-stripe version is the most popular and mainstream, I love this version the most, and like the shark, it is the oldest of it's kind.
🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜
THIS IS IT!!! Thank you all so much for the kind comments and support (especially on discord)! I loved doing this last year and loved it again this year, although I certainly had a lot more fun. Thank you to the goobers (you know who you are) for providing me with sharks (and for making me do this in the first place). Thanks to anyone who gave shark or flag requests! I hope you saw yourself in at least one of these ❤️
Collage of all the sharks is up! [Link]
Check my Instagram highlights (b33viemm) for all the June drawings from this year and last year. They're all also up here on Tumblr if you scroll down to June of 2023. Click this link -> #b33viemm art.

My Thoughts on Representation in the Hazbinverse
!!Warning, huge rant below!!
I enjoy Hazbin Hotel, this is no secret if you've ever seen my blog before. Unfortunately despite my general enjoyment of the show, as well as its spin-off series, Helluva Boss, that does not leave either show immune to criticism in my eyes.
One thing in particular that I find irritating about the show is its approach to diversity and representation. And yes, while I admit body diversity and disabled representation are limited, that isn't the focus of my particular point at the moment. Instead, I'd like to talk about queer representation in Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.
Now you may be thinking "how is the queer representation less than desirable if nearly every character in the show is part of the LGBTQ+ community?" That is what I believed as well, but what shocked me most upon further inspection was the upsetting lack of identities that are represented despite the sheer number of queer characters across the two shows.
From my knowledge, among major characters in the shows, the most commonly represented identities are gay men and pansexuals. Angel Dust, Blitzø, Stolas, Beelzebub, Asmodeus, Fizzerolli and Verosika Mayday are all prominent fan-favourite characters who canonically align with one of these two sexualities.
Of course gay and pansexual representation is important, and part of me is glad to see so much of it, but unfortunately due to the abundance of these two identities in the show, many other identities are comparatively underrepresented in my opinion. For example, despite the prominence of pansexual characters, bisexual characters are few and far between, Charlie Morningstar, Moxxie, and Loona are the only characters who are confirmed to identify as bisexual, as far as I'm aware.
As a lesbian, I feel underrepresented by the characters in Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. As far as I know, only two important characters are confirmed to be or heavily implied to be explicitly lesbian, being Sallie May and Vaggie.
Yes, homosexual representation is rather common in Vivziepop's shows, and yet most of the canonically gay characters are men (ie. Stolas, Andrealphus, Angel Dust).
As a sapphic myself I can't help but feel somewhat disappointed by the lack of not only lesbian characters, but generally sapphic interactions throughout the shows despite the large range of queer female characters. The only real sapphic relationship that is shown between the two series is Charlie and Vaggie from Hazbin Hotel, and I adore them, yes, but it feels strange that they're the only one we get to see. I can't help but wish that in this fictional setting absolutely loaded with LGBTQ+ characters, that I got to see more than that. Especially since there are plenty of male relationships in the series (Fizzerolli x Asmodeus, Stolas x Blitzø, Angel Dust x Husk, etc.)
That's not even mentioning the concerning lack of gender diversity for such a queer-positive series. Sallie May is a trans woman, and she is the only gender nonconforming character in the franchise to be anything but a background character.
At the time of this post, there is not a single character in the series who is referred to with they/them pronouns or stated to be nonbinary in any way aside from Sallie May. Which aside from being a disappointing lack of representation for such a large community, is also a bit unrealistic to me. I consider myself to be a cis woman, yes, but my friend groups are made up primarily of other queer people, many of whom identify as trans or nonbinary or genderfluid, and it's upsetting to see them be underrepresented in a piece of media that focuses so strongly on queer characters.
Of course, I appreciate the representation that we do have, and I appreciate the show's attempts to expose viewers to so many queer characters, but in the end I can't help but be a little disappointed that such an LGBTQ+ driven show (which clearly aims for inclusivity) only really explores a few of the countless sexual and gender identities that exist.
However, these are just my thoughts, though. I mean no hate to the creators or fans of either show, I'm simply sharing my own opinions about Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss and delivering some (hopefully) helpful criticism. As previously stated, I am a casual enjoyer of both shows, but despite this I still feel there's room for improvement, which is the case for all media. I'm curious to know other people's thoughts on the matter as well, though. How do you feel the show has represented your own identity and how do you feel about the overall diversity of the show? Let me know! Or don't. I dunno.

not a silly question at all!! i love to read about this stuff & am always happy to talk about it :) i am however not very experienced with film so other than Bound being on my to-watch list since forever i don’t have any recommendations in that area
all of these recs are definitely at different points along a spectrum of how much i ascribe to or agree with; i avoid language of “safe, sane, & consensual,” for example, because i disagree with the requirement for safety and the positioning of sanity as synonymous with not doing harm. a lot of kink writing falls into the habit of trying to justify itself to normative society through language of health, which i find both useless & offensive lol. as far as content notes it’s also worth mentioning that many if not all of these works discuss stigma & trauma, including hate crimes, rape, and incest.
i have a prior list on my disability blog with recs about sex & disability, i highly recommend checking out my favorites from there! Emma Sheppard’s work in particular was life-changing for me. many of these were accumulated through her sources as well as from @gatheringbones ‘s excerpts
