in case anyone was wondering, my next star trek fic is gonna be a response to how poorly bdsm is represented in the fic sphere
it's also gonna be a love letter to my personal kink and disability communities, and especially the people in my life who exist at the center of that venn diagram with me :)

“I see” (Matt)
Send me “I see” and I’ll tell you how my character perceives yours
"Mr. Murdock is truly an inspiration to look up to! Whoops, I mean... pun totally not intended, but come on! He's an exceptional lawyer, and pro bono? What's not to like about somebody like that?" Kirk can't help but feel a little excited when talking about the man. They might not have shared the same disability but Kirk had always been impressed by how others not only managed to succeed in a world made for those without impairments but thrive. The fact that Matt Murdock was not only an inspirational figure but cared, really cared about his work was impressive. The richest could easily hire him on to get them off the hook but the man did no such instead, instead taking on even the most difficult cases when others were unable to pay for such work. It was hard not to find such qualities admirable after living in Gotham for so many years - the number of times he'd read about the wealthy practically getting away with murder was depressingly common, and the injustice of at all stung. Kirk frowned as he pondered further about the lawyer of Hell's Kitchen. Had Murdock ever sought a cure for blindness? Or was he content to live as he did? Kirk couldn't help but feel a rush of guilt through his admiration, that even without the possibility of a cure, Murdock put everything on the line to bring justice to those unable to seek it themselves. He sighed. To think he once had a low opinion of lawyers but Murdock had proven those negative thoughts wrong. If they ever met, Kirk wouldn't mind buying the man a drink sometime and maybe something more.
Man-Bat can't help but hiss at the man's scent. He knows this one, the one who looks a little like the other bat but without the broken wings. Not having them didn't stop him from seeming like he could almost fly, his body so swift and strong it felt as though he could. The man could hit hard with those sticks of his too, Man-Bat had found to his greatest displeasure upon finding it damn near impossible to sneak up on his foe. This man was no prey but an equal, another hunter of the night who flew without wings.
#defectivexfragmented#memes ;; how my character perceives yours#Thanks for sending this!#And hopefully the answer was okay#Just keeping in mind some things we talked about before with these two#I genuinely think Kirk would find Matt admirable#A lawyer is no easy job and it's damn hard and dirty#But his deeds help make the world seem that little bit brighter#Matt putting his skills forwards not for money but to help those who aren't so well off#That's what the justice system should be about#Equality for all regardless of how wealthy you are or aren't#Matt being blind just makes him a credit really#Stanning people with disabilities being capable and forces for change <3#Man-Bat probably doesn't feel as kindly towards Daredevil haha

makes me a little sad when star trek ignores IDIC. like. vulcans are logical. that is true. But 'logical', for vulcans, does not amount to 'without compassion,' and it definitely doesn't amount to 'racial superiority.' Belief in 'infinite diversity in infinite combinations' should NOT result in the weird racist/speciest stuff we're getting in some of the newer treks. It does make sense that some vulcans are discriminatory. They're still flawed. But that should not be common or expected, like it seems to be in SNW. If it is, then it's a race of hypocrites, which. doesn't seem very true to Star Trek's message.
I think TOS Spock does a pretty good job of embodying this. Not always, it was the 60s, after all, but mostly. He was often trying to find non-violent routes, and get by without killing - even if they were in danger or had already been attacked. (See: the mugato, and the horta (until Kirk was the one in danger, lmao. t'hy'la > IDIC), the Gorn ship). Kirk, in his eulogy, calls him the most human soul he's ever known, and I've always read that as Kirk calling out Spock's overwhelming compassion.
It's just so much more interesting when Vulcans get to be radically compassionate. I want them to believe that everything and everyone has value. I want them to respect all ways of being. I want them to find ways for even very non-humanoid aliens to exist unfettered in society. I want them to see hybrids and think that it's amazing. Also, like, disability rep. I want Vulcans to have The Most Accessible Planet and available resources because they want everyone to feel accepted and valued. It makes for better characters and more interesting stories.
#tbh feels like some weird racist/misogynistic enlightenment-era philosophy coming through when they do that. y'know?#like 'oooh if you're fully logical you're BETTER than those who have EMOTIONS like WOMEN do'.#and the paramount execs are eating it up like 'yesss logic means being an ASS to people LESS LOGICAL than you!'.#like really guys. c'mon#like it makes sense in TAS that spock would get bullied by some kids. kids bully. that's common. makes sense that even vulcan kids bully#but if ADULTS are OFTEN doubting spock because he's half-human? that just kinda sucks. if i may it's even illogical#IDIC for me but not for thee type thing.#i think that being discriminatory should be a source of shame on a vulcan's house.#i think vulcans should adore learning about other cultures#star trek#vulcan#star trek vulcan#vulcans#vulcan culture#spock#star trek tos#tos#star trek the original series#sorry for my lack of mention of other major vulcan characters. I am so so behind in my star trek watching.#from what i've heard tuvok is also a good example. i know next to nothing about t'pol so couldn't say for her.

Tournament Details:
Teams compete in multiple games against other teams and the team with the most overall wins is the tournament winner.
The game is played in a large outdoor area with plenty of cover (trees, hills, etc.) divided in half into “territories” belonging to the two different teams.
The objective of the game is to find and retrieve the other team’s flag (which they have hidden somewhere) and return it to your own team’s base before the other team finds your flag.
Teams can hide their flags anywhere on their territory provided that the flag is visible from at least one angle standing on the ground at average height.
While on the opposing team’s territory, a player can be tagged by an opposing team member, at which point they are then “taken prisoner” to the opposing team’s base and must remain there until a member of their own team comes to free them by tagging them.
Physical combat other than tagging isn’t allowed. Injuring another player is grounds for disqualification.
No phasers, tricorders, communicators, transporters, or any other technology are allowed (with an exception for technology integrated into particular characters such as Seven’s implants or technological disability accommodations like Geordi’s visor).
Cheating teams are disqualified from that game, which is equivalent to a loss (assuming they’re caught cheating, of course).
For the purposes of this tournament, it can be assumed that all characters have all of the knowledge and experience they gained over the course of their respective shows, are reasonably aware of all opposing team member’s abilities, and are all equally motivated to win the tournament.

Why Do Old-School TV Duos Have SUCH MLM Vibes?!
I think there’s something very specific about the formula and writing style of non-serialized/semi-serialized shows from the 60s to 80s that featured two grown men going on wacky dangerous adventures that makes my gay little literary analysis brain go absolutely off the wall bonkers. I’m trying to figure out why!
I’m writing this on my Trek blog because I don’t think this pattern in people actually shipping these types of relationships the way they do if fandom as we know it wasn’t born via TOS in syndication. That being said! I also think it has to do with the way these shows are designed that makes myself and others OBSESSED with a specific character dynamic that feels (to me) damn near impossible to replicate in modern television. In a way that’s more than just fandom, it’s in the way TV like this was written at the time!
Further explanation under the cut!
🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
I think what it usually boils down to is this. There’s a charming protagonist whom without the series could not operate, frequently top billed or the title character! (See: Wild Wild West, Starsky & Hutch) BUT he doesn’t have anyone to play off of! So what do they do pretty much every single time? Give Mr. Idealized Vision of Time-Period Masculinity For Genre a second guy to rhyme with!
See but the other guy has to play opposite but parallel to our hypermasculine protagonist. So what frequently ends up happening is that in order to play off our “normal” guy, even though he’s also a white dude, is that he’s still somehow Other.
They’re always perfect for each other, and they always get into scenarios that would be written, shot and interpreted by conventional audiences as romantic IF either one of those characters were a woman! Especially at the time these shows were made in.
If the one is aggressive, the other is gentle. If the protagonist is violent, his counterpart is intellectual. If the one is stoic, the other is emotional. Which (while one size def doesn’t fit all) usually makes the second guy come off as much more queer-coded (and sometimes other minorities like neurodivergent/disabled etc) than the other because of the traits associated with masculinity vs gayness at the time! Our prime examples in these gifs are Spock, Hutch, Artemus, and also *BJ!
*(M*A*S*H is a bit of a unique case since the show flirts with queerness more openly in ways that people more into the series have explained better than me but I think it still fits the formula I’m discussing.)
Here’s the thing though right? We’ve got two best friends, and the show NEVER really feels right if one of them is missing unless the focus of the story is how A & B operate without each other while trying to find the other one. They stick with and rescue each other unfailingly in scenarios that might destroy a regular friendship.
Hell, there’s often stuff that would emotionally/physically destroy a regular person/character in modern media. But because it’s not serialized they always seem to pull through seemingly through the power of friendship alone or dealing with it off-screen! Emotional consequences? Yuck! (Unless it’s M*A*S*H or Starsky & Hutch, like I said, not monolithic)
Here’s the thing that some people might say throws a wrench into the interpretation I’m discussing. What about the absolutely non-stop parade of conventionally attractive women the main protagonist (and less frequently the supporting man) goes through?
I would reply: how many of those female characters actually emotionally impact our protagonists as characters long term?
The answer is of course, because it’s NOT serialized, almost none! Kirk can watch Edith Keeler get killed by a car accident and still be making eyes at Spock the next episode. Hawkeye can have a “life changing” romance with a Vietnamese humanitarian woman, then share a blanket with BJ next episode like she never existed!
The Doylist explanation of course is not just the fact it wasn’t serialized but also just, constant, blatant 20th century sexism. Which SUCKS!!! As well as not wanting a long term love interest to throw off the character dynamic of our duderagonists. It’s the 20th century tv equivalent of bros before hoes.
However the Watsonian explanation always seems to result in no love interest EVER being more important than what the two protagonists have no matter whether you think they’re queer or not. No attractive woman could make our reputed babe-hound protagonist abandon his buddy. There’s no earnest romance our more queer-coded supporting man doesn’t end (or get ended for him) often for the protagonist’s sake.
Now some of these women are incredibly well written and straight up GOOD matches for our guys. So why wouldn’t they get involved in something long term UNLESS!! They were in love with each other the WHOLE time?
What if protagonist (frequently the babe hound) doesnt know he’s queer, or knows but doesn’t know he’s in love with his bestie, or any number of similar fruity explanations? The supporting man also runs into this explanation but people tend to believe he’s already aware that he’s queer but either also doesn’t know he’s in love or is keeping it to himself because time-period homophobia and/or thinking (probably not unreasonably) that babe hound is straight?
Between the inherent closeness of being narrative foils. The regularly scheduled life or death drama creating sometimes insanely romantic (in the narrative if not a literal sense) drama between the two. The revolving door of weekly women they never seem to get attached to enough to leave one another. The non-serialized nature resulting in sparse personal information/history about the protagonists as a result.
I think between the very NATURE of the way tv shows were written at the time. Plus the way fandom was shaped by a dynamic that has rippled through how media works and is interpreted by fans for decades upon decades. It’s not hard to imagine getting really emotionally invested in the possibility of the protagonists being in love is a fantastic way to enjoy the media!
In conclusion, it’s really fun and easy to go “these bitches gay! Good for them good for them!”

You know what I’m fucking tired of? People assuming Kirk is still on hard drugs or has a disability just because of the way he talks and expresses himself. Any real fan knows Kirk has social anxiety and it shows the most in interviews, especially ones that are vulnerable and require him to reflect on things. It’s harder for him to speak in certain interviews based on the topic and situation he’s put in. He has good days and bad days like everyone else. It’s not the easiest for him and that’s okay! We should be here to support and encourage him. Instead, people were making all kinds of shit jokes and disrespectful comments under the clip they posted on ig from Kirk’s So What interview. (Metallica even turned off the comments now)
Kirk is an extremely emotional person and I’m sick of people making fun of how he naturally is. He’s very sweet and doesn’t deserve this. I’m the same way as Kirk and I relate to him so much about being introverted and awkward when talking to others. It’s stupid that people don’t realize that not everyone speaks well in front of a camera. Plus it is even more nerve wracking for him because he knows this interview will be viewed by LOTS of people. That can lead to him being more anxious too. People need to stop being so damn ignorant and learn to shut their mouths. It’s sad there’s no human decency or kindness. Just because he’s famous doesn’t mean he has no feelings or care about things people say. I’m sure it affects him deeply.
#metallica#kirk hammett#i worded a few things wrong in my original post#i fixed them now#thank you to everyone adding insight in the tags and comments#it helped me word things better#please reread

Why you should take up "Kirk Fu"
Here at TrekBait we may not be experts in martial arts, we all only passed basic self-defence training by a whisker and one of us misread the brief as marital arts and spent 3 weeks studying up on different marriage vows. But one thing we admire is how much Captain James T. Kirk contributed to Starfleet’s training on the matter. Here we’ll run through some of his classic moves that are used throughout the fleet.
Double-fist Punch!
A classic move and guaranteed to fell any (non-Gorn) enemy!
Karate Chop!
Down your enemy in a single chop! Or in the case of these examples, several! This is best performed to the neck.
Body Drop!
Watch how he expertly throws his attacker to disarm him.
Head Bash!
Locked in a tight grip? Disorientate your enemy by bashing their temples in!
Body Throw!
This may look like a chaotic move that disables yourself as much as your enemy, but you can see how shocked and disorientated those officers are! It’s like they’re thinking “where did this madman learn to fight?” (thinking admirably of course, they want to learn too)
Frame Jump!
Watch how Kirk uses his surroundings to disorientate and evade his enemy. So elegant!
Drop Kick!
Take down your enemy with one kick, guaranteed to win your fight!
Thigh Wrestle!
This may look faintly erotic, but I can assure you the attacker is the one feeling faint in the grip of Kirk’s thighs!
Honorary Mention: Palm Strike
This may not be a Kirk move, but it is an evolution of his advanced martial arts expertise that has become a mainstay in Starfleet security.

I was seeing validity the Riker and Kirk comparisons but post Hide and Q…
Nope.
No way.
No freaking way Kirk would just stand there with god like power as dozens of people are suffering, where there’s a dead child in Scotty’s arms, and not use said powers just to keep a promise to Spock or some admiral. And then throw a hissy fit about needing to keep that promise at the cost of said kid’s life.
He’d say to hell with this and go for it.
Kirk values the lives of others over his own happiness. He would 100% sacrifice his own humanity if it was the only and best way he saw to protect/save people’s lives.
Then it would turn into Kirk getting more in tune with these powers, like fixing every mechanical difficulty on the ship, or being able to handle all the controls with his mind. Maybe even disabling an enemy Klingon or Romulan ship before it can attack.
And everyone else would intervene to try and stop him from losing his humanity. Maybe even a mind meld with Spock that snaps him out of it. Then Q could show up to take him to get converted, and Kirk only backs out in part because the job is more observational. He wouldn’t be able to use the powers like he had been, and because his friends convince him even as mere humans they can still make more of a difference.
And maybe as a bonus the Q let the little girl live but undo all the other stuff.
Anyway big picture is Riker is not Kirk.
