I always found that scene underwhelming.

Underwhelming.

Ben's fall to the Dark Side was the most pivotal moment of the Sequel Trilogy's timeline, the event that brought the end of Luke's next generation of Jedi Knight and gave the First Order the power it needed to be a threat...

... and it was because of, for all intents and purposes, a misunderstanding. The type of misunderstanding you may have seen in a mediocre kids movie.

"Luke, overcome with fear, activates his lightsaber. He does stop himself and regains control of his emotions. but... WHOOPS, Ben woke up and sees the lightsaber because Luke didn't turn it off immediately! [BOING-OING-OING-OING-OING!] Don't you just HATE when that happens?" I agree with the idea that Luke should be the one to ultimately push Ben into becoming Kylo Ren, but it should've been a personal failure. It should NOT have been this circumstantial cop-out where the narrative could reasonably try absolving Luke of personal guilt. No. Have Luke ROYALLY fuck up, but have him fuck up in a way that still feels true to his character. Don't give us this "third act misunderstanding" caliber of writing.

Luke should have implored his nephew to turn away from the Dark Side, to warn of its corruptions, to save him the same way he had saved his father. If it worked for Darth Vader, surely it would work for Ben!

But it doesn't work. Perhaps he says the wrong thing, strikes the wrong nerve, or something else happens entirely! Maybe it devolves into a shouting match! Either way, all Luke's efforts end in disaster. Try as he might, he still pushed his nephew into the abyss. It's all his fault.

Ben gives in to the Dark Side, seduces the other Jedi students to join him, and destroys everything Luke Skywalker has built:

I genuinely and deeply apologize for ranting about the Sequel Trilogy in the year of our lord twenty twenty five but I just have to say yet again

They really expected us to buy that Luke “I will not fight you, father” Skywalker, Luke “I would rather die than fight my father who is, I will note, actively trying to kill me rn” Skywalker, tried to murder his nephew who was, and I cannot emphasize this enough, a SLEEPING CHILD????

Like a deer in headlights

Hi! This isn't really an ask, I just want you to know I saw the forest lamp deer creature on my dash recently and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it! I'd saved the photo to use as a background (is that ok?), and did a google image search (my first one!) to find you so I could tell you how instantly I fell in love with that picture. It may be the stark white face surrounded by all that greenery, but it grabbed me instantly ❤️
