#dear season#dear#wait why are ppl reblogging this djfhsjfg#i just wanted to post this over here for myself#its a good metaphor for the internal struggle of a monster hunter in love with a werewolf!!!!#there are two wolves (aggression and fear)#but its not enough to control the deer (nonviolent feelings like empathy and guilt)#those aren’t inherently bad or anything but in excess will lead to harm#combine that with the external pressure to please the ranchers#they want the deer *and* the wolves gone ideally#even though thats more unnatural than anything else and just not realistic#its a good metaphor!!!! to meeeeeee!!#i didnt even tag this as anything#literally just my oc tags

What Measure A Man?
Fandom: Werewolf By Night (MCU)
Gen
Word Count: 3.5k
Summary: Jack and Elsa fight a monster, find a lost child, and talk philosophy, not necessarily in that order. Tw for off-screen child abduction, child in peril, canon-typical violence
(A/N: I hope I haven’t misstepped with my depiction of a cucuy. I am weak for wordplay and actor allusion, but if I’ve crossed a line let me know and I will make it a generic bogeyman instead.
(Also, I do love the film’s monster makeup and the decision to go with a trad wolfman design with an expressive face. I just wanted to have my cake and eat it too, so I wrote this doesn’t-contradict-canon-but-most-probably-wouldn’t-call-it-compliant fic.)
Elsa had been tracking the cucuy for almost a week, and she was getting close. It had been moving steadily south-southeast, and she expected it would likely be slowing down, now that it had found what was surely its ideal habitat – an old forest, whose canopy was so thick that even at high noon the understory was dim twilight, where shadows abounded. Just what a boogeyman needed.
She crept carefully along a deer trail, looking for any signs that the monster was in the immediate area. And because she was paying excruciatingly close attention to her surroundings, she noticed the wolf before it noticed her.
It was nosing through the brush perhaps fifteen metres downhill from her, its reddish coat blending in with the carpet of fallen leaves but the white on its paws and muzzle standing out in the dim light. Elsa took a steadying breath, prepared to stay still and observe from a distance, but she didn’t get the chance - a jay kicked up a fuss just over her head, and the wolf’s head snapped up to look in her direction.
“Elsa?!”
What. the. Fuck.
The wolf - Jack, it had to be Jack - bounded up the hill towards her. She had to stifle every instinct and trained reflex in order to keep her posture loose. Lucky for her, appearing unconcerned was a specialty
"Hi… Jack." Up close he was smaller than she would have expected, about the size of a large alsatian. Otherwise, there was nothing to distinguish him from the mounted specimens of timber wolves she’d seen in lowercase-h hunting lodges. There was nothing to suggest that he was a werewolf at all, or indeed Jack Russell, except she was fairly certain she would recognize those eyes anywhere.
"Elsa! What are you doing here?"
“I’m tracking a cucuy… ” There had to be a way to ask, right? Jack hadn’t said anything about why he was a wolf, but that didn’t mean it would be rude to ask. Jack’s ears flattened against his skull. “A cucuy! Oh no no no, that is not good. A little girl has gone missing; I’m helping the search party looking for her. If a cucuy is involved, we have to hurry! Come on, this way!” He raced back to where she’d first spotted him. Elsa hurried after him, scrambling to keep up with him and her tumbling thoughts, a jolt of adrenalin sending her heartbeat into overdrive. Internally, she was berating herself - if she’d been faster, better, she could have caught up to the cucuy before it found its next child to kidnap. But with Jack’s help, finding the creature responsible would surely go twice as fast.
Elsa’s chest felt tight. A knot formed, just beneath her ribs, that she knew could not be picked apart and untangled with logic. A proper Gordian knot, the only way to get rid of it was to cut it, and the only way to cut it was to find the girl and hope they weren’t too late.
That was the crux of the matter, wasn’t it? Starting now, she wasn’t going to stop looking until the girl was found, and she had no idea how long that would be. Tracking a cucuy alone was one thing; then, hours of tracking could be downright monotonous if there weren’t many signs. It was practically routine, and she could take short breaks knowing the trail would still be there for her to pick up again if she didn’t wait too long.
Now, though, now there was a countdown clock she couldn’t see, and her mind started forecasting the future, unspooling potentialities, imagining still being in the forest, still searching, still feeling this damnable, sustained tension for the next two, three, four hours - the thought of which was its own form of anxiety, compounding her stress.
Stop. Focus. She took a deep breath, then another, and finally a helpful, rational thought was able to penetrate her spiraling thoughts. Cucuy don’t typically eat their victims right away. They try to adopt the children, and when that doesn’t work, they lose their tempers with disastrous consequences… but it takes time to get to that point. And by now the sun had come up; the bogeyman was likely drowsing the day away, with the little girl in thrall. Like many monsters, it was primarily active at night.
She caught up to Jack as he was circling the ground, seeking whatever trail he’d been tracking before. Suddenly, he darted forward, only to slow down after several strides. He then backtracked, snuffled at the ground audibly, then leaped forward on a slightly different heading, only to come to a halt once again.
"Jack, Jack, slow down! We have time, so long as we get there before nightfall. At this rate you’ll just tire yourself out before we even get there."
Panting slightly and looking as abashed as a wolf could, Jack bobbed his head. “Sí, sí, you’re right. I got a bit ahead of myself, didn’t I?”
“You got ahead of the trail, at any rate.” The pace Jack now set, nose to the ground, was more akin to a leisurely amble, and Elsa fell into step beside him. “Can I ask a question?”
“Of course! Anything.”
“Is this what you’re like when you transform without the influence of the bloodstone?”
“Well, no, but yes.”
Elsa rolled her eyes. “Thanks, that cleared everything up.”
Jack glanced up at her, then at the forest around them. “You remember, when I said there is a part of me that is not me? That part came out with the bloodstone, yes, but it is also the part that comes out on full moon nights. That is one kind of transformation; this is another.”
“So if your current transformation is not the ‘part of you that is not you,’ what is it then?”
“Eh? Also me. I’m still myself, still human.” He paused momentarily to scratch behind one ear. Using his foot.
“Think you might need to get your eyes checked, mate.”
“Well – Hang on.” He paused, scenting the ground closely. “Would you mind moving to my other side? The wind’s shifted, your smell is getting in the way.”
“No one’s ever insulted my smell so directly before,” she huffed, mock-offended, but she did comply. “You were going to try to tell me that you are in fact a human right now.”
“Because I am.” He glanced up at her again. Behind his wolfy grin, there was… something. He wasn’t just trying to take the piss out of her. But she didn’t know what he wanted her to say.
"You're literally a wolf. For god's sake you're walking on four legs and covered in fur!"
"So? Most humans have two legs, it is true. But some have one, or none. The number of legs we have does not make us human."
“Yes, fine,” she conceded the point. “Humans are intelligent, is that it? You’re saying it’s your mind that makes you human, that because you can talk and think, you’re human on the inside, where it counts?” She shrugged. “Sure, why not.”
“I wouldn’t say humans are intelligent–”
Elsa snorted, then jerked in surprise when Jack actually nipped her heel.
"I'm being serious! This is important. Being smart, that's not what makes someone human. If that were the case, then there would be a, how you say, a scale. People at the top, the ones with the highest IQ, they would be the most human. And people less smart would be less human. There are already people who think this way, and it is wrong! Ted was born human, raised human. He got three doctorates. Since he was changed, he's not quite so fast at problem-solving. He can't do the quantum what-you-call-it in his head anymore, the way he used to. But he's not less! He's just different. And he hasn't stopped being human just because of an accident."
"An accident!?"
"In a manner of speaking. It was not the intended outcome to become as he is."
Elsa mulled that over, ducking under a low-hanging branch. "What, then, decides whether someone is human? If it's not their body and it's not their intellect?"
"Well, why not let them decide? I think, if someone feels that they are human, that should be enough, yeah?"
Elsa sighed. She’d come here to hunt a monster, not get philosophical, but she supposed this was par for the course when Jack was involved. “Surely it can’t be that easy, but what do I know? Can’t say I’ve given it much thought before. Growing up, I was taught a very black-and-white definition of human and monster.”
Jack hummed. “But something changed your mind, no? You disagreed with Verussa even before we met.”
Elsa waved him off. “You give me too much credit, it wasn’t anything as noble as you make it sound. I just - Wait.” She halted and gestured for him to do the same, crouching down to get a closer look at what she’d spotted. “Look - cucuy tracks, and they’re fresh. We’re close.” Jack was instantly alert, ears twitching and tail partially raised. He partially opened his mouth, scenting the air. "There’s fear-scent, faintly, both human and rabbit. It probably tried to offer her live prey, which she would have refused. I don’t smell any of her blood, so I don’t think the cucuy retaliated. But we are close, now, and we need a plan. You have more experience fighting monsters, how about you go after the cucuy, and I will get the child to safety?"
"And how are you going to do that, the way you are now? Which, you never actually - nevermind, no time now. How about you distract the cucuy while I get the child – what’s her name? Do you know?” “Sylvie.” “Then I’ll come back after I’ve gotten Sylvie to out of there, and cut its head off.” Then she added, more sharply than she intended, “Oh, sorry, unless it counts as human and I should spare it?” She could not say she was a fan of the uncertainty being around Jack brought to monster hunting.
Jack looked at her with eyes far too knowing. “I don’t like killing. But I do not have the luxury to pretend I don’t understand it.”
“Alright then. Glad we’re agreed.” Elsa broke eye contact first.
Moving silently, they crept forward. A broken-necked rabbit lay on the packed earth of a small clearing. There in the rocky hillside beyond was a tall, narrow crevasse, maybe four feet wide, and extending back at least ten feet. Elsa could just make out the small figure of a human child, tucked into the back of the cave. And leaning over her, the cucuy.
She and Jack exchanged one last look, then he charged, hurtling forward like an arrow, teeth bared in a snarl. He covered the distance in less than two seconds, giving the cucuy no time to react before his jaws clamped tightly around one of its legs. Jack heaved his body backward, pulling its spindly limbs tumbling from its shelter, before letting go and darting out of reach of its grasping hands. The cucuy screeched in anger, its deep eye sockets fixed on Jack; Elsa seized the opportunity to break cover and dash to the little girl’s side.
She was young, maybe six or seven, and dressed in Tweety Bird pyjamas. So far as Elsa could tell she was unharmed, though she was sound asleep despite the ruckus - likely still under the cucuy’s thrall. Elsa didn’t envy her the nightmares when she awoke, but at the moment it made her job easier. She slung the girl over her shoulders in a fireman’s carry and booked it, sprinting away from the fight and not stopping until she’d put at least twenty metres between them.
Then she carefully laid the girl down, beneath the overhang of a fallen tree’s roots. No time to catch her breath, Elsa ran back to the fight in time to see Jack, bleeding from one ear, leap forward and slash open the monster’s forelimb with a quick snap of his teeth, before leaping back to resume circling it, growling. Elsa readied her machete and waited until the cucuy, pivoting to keep Jack in its sights, turned its back to her before she leaped forward and lopped its head off with one blow.
She let the blade fall to the ground, and finally, finally, stopped to catch her breath.
Jack trotted up to her, skirting the headless, many-limbed body on the ground. “Sylvie, is she okay?”
“She’s fine, the thrall should break soon now that the cucuy is dead.”
“Good, good, that’s good.”
As they fell into step once more, walking towards the sleeping girl, Elsa figured she would not get another opportunity. "So… can I ask why you’re ‘human’ on four legs today?"
"To help with the search party, of course. My nose is much better, this way. But," he added, flicking one ear at her, "I am thinking that you are wondering how, not why. Simply put, when I transform voluntarily, I keep my mind. I am all of myself, and not caught in-between."
"So you could turn back, now that we’ve found the girl? I have to say, it’s a little distracting, having a conversation with you like this."
He grinned toothily. “Why didn’t you say anything sooner? But I think you will agree that changing back would be more distracting - I haven’t got any clothes with me.”
Elsa raised an unimpressed brow. "So what exactly was your a plan, if you found her? Naked man approaching a young girl in the woods - not a good look."
"I have a Lassie routine I can pull out. No, really!" He raised his tail from where it hung down at rest, pulled his head back so he looked less like he was stalking prey, and grinned a toothy doggy grin, his tongue lolling to one side. He shifted his gait so he trotted as he walked, practically bouncing. Elsa could not suppress a snort - werewolves should not be so goofy - and shortly thereafter Jack relaxed back into his natural wolfy posture. He shook his shoulders lightly like he was shaking off snow. "It is tiring to maintain for long time," he admitted. "Gives me a crick in my neck." The girl, Sylvie, was just where Elsa had left her, asleep between the roots of a wide beech tree. Elsa tried shaking her awake, but Sylvie merely turned over in her sleep. She checked her over for injury, more methodically than before, and beside her Jack did the same with his own senses. It all reaffirmed what Elsa had already determined, that apart from nightmares, Sylvie would be just fine. Still, little kids were resilient. Could be she’d be able to put this bad dream behind her. Jack wuffed softly. “You’ll have to carry her back. I’ll keep out of sight in case she wakes up.” “Except I don’t know the way. C’mon, Lassie, you can take the lead.” “Ay, I already regret saying anything about that.” Elsa lifted the still-sleeping girl onto her back for the trek back towards human habitation. Hopefully the search party wasn’t too far, or the sleeping spell wore off soon, because while seven-year-old wasn’t heavy, she wasn’t exactly light either, and as he was, Jack was no help at all. “So… How is Ted doing? Is he around?” “No, he doesn’t like cold weather; he rarely comes this far north. I am actually on my way to visit him, in Florida." "That’s nice. What brought you to Missouri?" They’d talked for about a quarter mile about places they’d both seen on their travels, when Elsa felt a stirring at her back. Signalling to Jack that he should stop talking, she shifted her grip and lowered Sylvie to the ground. The girl woke up slowly at first, then all at once. She shrieked, ear-piercingly loud and sudden enough that Elsa took a startled step backwards, holding her hands up placatingly. "Hey, hey, it’s okay. You’re safe now. I’ve got you, you’re safe."
"Wh-where am I?! Who are you?! I don’t, I don’t - !" she took great gulping breaths.
Elsa crouched down. "My name is Elsa. I found you in the woods. Your family is looking for you; I’m here to bring you home."
Sylvie latched onto her sleeve with a vice grip. "Why am I in the woods! Why!"
"It’s okay." Elsa soothed, squeezing her shoulder to ground her. "You’re awake, the nightmare is over. You’re safe. You’ll be home soon." Elsa didn’t particularly want to gaslight a seven-year-old with lies; a distraction, on the other hand, could be just the thing to shift her focus and get her moving forward. Physically and metaphorically. "Have you met my friend, Jack?" He trotted over, head held high, and sat down next to Elsa, tail wagging.
"Oh!" Sylvie released her vice-grip on Elsa’s jacket to tentatively reach towards him. Jack obligingly lowered his head so she could rub between his fuzzy ears. "He’s so pretty!"
"You’re so right," Elsa agreed, to appease the child; Jack cocked his head and grinned at her. She sighed and stood up, brushing off dirt and leaves. "C’mon, your family is waiting for you. Let’s get you home." She held out her hand to Sylvie, and together they started walking, Jack trotting along beside, still in Lassie-mode.
"How did I get out here? Do you know? Do you know where my Daddy is? I miss him! I don’t like these woods!" Sylvie stopped abruptly and dug her heels in. "Get my dad!"
"The faster we walk, the faster you’ll get to your dad."
"I don’t want to walk! I hate these woods! I want you to call my Daddy!"
"I don’t have his number." Which was an oversight on their part, admittedly. She should have checked if Jack had gotten a contact number for the search party. "I can’t carry you the whole way, it’s too far. Literally the only way we’re getting out of these woods is if we all walk."
"Why can’t you carry me?"
"I just said. You’re too big."
"But I don’t want to walk."
Elsa pinched the bridge of her nose. Sylvie was scared, and scared kids had the same fear reflexes as anyone else: fight, flight, or fawn. Elsa should consider herself lucky that the girl’s first response wasn’t to bolt into the forest, but the impulse to curl up and lie still wasn’t helpful in this situation.
She tried another tactic. "You know, Jack is scared of the woods, too."
"What, really?" Sylvie looked skeptically at Jack, who gave her his best puppy eyes in response.
"Yep," Elsa said, biting back a grin. "Total scaredy-cat, this one. But it’s good for him to be outside, so I’m trying to get him used to the forest. Do you think you can help me? Can you show him how to be brave?"
Sylvie gave her proposal due consideration, then nodded, steely-eyed. "You don’t have to worry anymore, Jack. I’ll look out for you."
Task in hand, Sylvie had no more issues with walking. She kept up a constant stream of chatter, directed mostly towards Jack in order to reassure him. In the end, it did not take that long to cross paths with the search party. Within half an hour Elsa had returned Sylvie to the grateful arms of her father, Jack hanging back out of sight of the adults, who were all significantly less likely to be fooled by his dog routine.
Elsa extricated herself from their gratitude as quickly as she could, uninterested in tearful reunions. She bummed a map off one of the searchers and plotted the best course back to her car. As soon as the search party was out of sight, Jack fell into step beside her.
"It was good to see you again, Elsa."
"Mm. This was a lot more fun than last time." She chewed her lip, thinking carefully about whether she wanted to make the offer. "Listen," Elsa began. "I was actually on my way to Georgia, this hunt was just a detour. Word is there’s something draining the ley lines. If you’re headed to Florida, do you want to… travel together, for a bit?"
"I’d like that."
"Clothing is required. That’s non-negotiable."
"Of course."
The last vestiges of the knot in her chest loosened, and she took a deep breath of cool autumn air. Some company would be nice for this trip.

Jeonghan (윤정한):
-----------------
“Aroma 4: Purple Rose”
synopsis: Your soulmate is Jeonghan, that's confirmed and unbreakable. Your father is finally accepting Jeonghan's abilities as an overall werewolf, meanwhile, you get more drunk on Jeonghan's scent. - wolves determine their destined soulmate by smell; their soulmate will have a distinct, unique, and strong smell like no other.
parts: 1 - “Aroma 1” | 2 - “Aroma 2” | 3 - “Aroma 3” | 4 - “Aroma 4: Purple Rose”
genre: soulmate au, werewolf au
pairing: werewolf!jeonghan x werewolf!reader
a/n: Anyone who hasn't listened to Jeonghan's song/mixtape “Purple Rose”, y'all better hear it! To make a part 4, I had nothing to go off on, but after hearing “Purple Rose”, which showed a striking similarity in lyrics to this plot, my brain kind of sparked. + I don't know how you're supposed to interpret this- but I hope this imagine was okay???
-----------------
Your eyes and mind were dozing, the only thing keeping you awake was his amazing scent that was drowning you every second.
You were sitting on a log, beside your brothers. What was it, the fourth round? It seemed like it has been over 2 hours since Jeonghan began having brawling tournaments with your brothers.
There were still two left in line, the strongest for the last.
Which, you found that completely unfair. Jeonghan was only one and to have him fight against six of your strong brothers was only going to drain his energy. Since the two strongest brothers were last, Jeonghan, who would then be completely drained of energy, wouldn't even stand a chance!
When you first heard about the brawling from your brother, you thought that Jeonghan wouldn't even last two rounds. If you look at him, he doesn't seem that strong, does he? Well, that is true, but he's not weak either. He's strategic. He spends a lot of time analyzing your brother's moves before he attacks.
Aside from his attractive smell, that was another thing of his that made you sort of like him. Not to mention, he also would pull silly plays that your brothers would consider dirty. He's just smart, you thought.
You were poking a stick in the ground out of boredom. It was fun at first for you, but the more the rounds extended, the more you became exhausted just watching them fight.
“Yay, I win!” Jeonghan shouted, panting.
You looked up to see Jeonghan. Your brother was on the floor struggling to get up and your father had his arms crossed.
Jeonghan walked a little closer to you, his hair and forehead were full of sweat but his smell was still suffocating.
He had a grin on his face but didn't say anything. Jeonghan had simply wanted to get a better sniff of your addictive scent. Even if you didn't look at him while he fought or cheered him on, just your strong scent from a distance could give him strength.
“Father, I think this is good enough,” Your brothers who were waiting at the side said.
You turned to them, a bit surprised. Those two loved to fight and wrestle with each other, what was with the sudden change of heart?
“We could have gone at him all at once.” Your other brother stated, looking away.
Your father rolled his eyes and walked toward you. He had arranged the long brawl so that he could try and prove Jeonghan wasn't good enough. In truth, you knew your father was slowly starting to like Jeonghan, even if he made stupid excuses like “It's only because his pack has good land”.
Jeonghan was your father's ideal son-in-law, strong, intelligent, kind, and thoughtful.
-
“Father,” you said quietly, bringing over a large deer thigh for your father. It was the deer that the Diamond pack hunted that night. “Have some dinner.”
“Thank you,”
Surprisingly, he took the meat and began to feast.
You sat down beside him.
“Dad,” you took a deep breath. “Do you still hate Jeonghan?”
Your father paused. There was a long silence, only the crackling of fire from the burning fireplace could be heard in the dark dark evening.
“Well, he's quite strong, and he's young,” Your father still had his mouth half full. “Smart and calm, romantic and fun, he seems like someone who could bring the ‘you’ out of you.”
You smiled. “So you aren't going to try to kill him with your claws or make my brothers go after him?”
Your father looked away, taking another bite of the savory meat. “His family just left a lot of nice land for him. Plus, he has twelve other brothers who taught him well, that's why they're able to catch and lure so much prey.”
You tried to hold in your laughter. “Dad, he's the second oldest in the pack.”
Your father choked and then shooed you away.
You couldn't help but smile to yourself as you headed back into the den.
-
Jeonghan made sure his brothers were asleep before he crept out of the den.
The secret moon looked down on him.
It was just some time in the middle of the night when he wanted to get drunk off you. He missed the smell and wanted no more but to get another taste.
Jeonghan still wasn't aware of how your father felt about him, so his heart was heavy with worries. Even so, he couldn't get you, your smell, and your beauty, that was like a flower, out of his head.
You were awakened by the smell of Jeonghan. That smell filled your lungs and drowned your nose so that you couldn't smell anything else.
You got out of bed and wondered why the smell was so strong when Jeonghan was so far away. Usually, from his packs' den to yours, you wouldn't be able to smell him, but something was off.
You left the den and looked up to the sky, only seeing the bright moonlight shining down on the dark forest.
There was only chirping of crickets from all directions, making you almost forget where you were standing. The aroma of Jeonghan was fogging up your entire world. It made you want to head out into the forest and search for where the scent was from.
It was dizzying so you could only close your eyes and listen, hoping that you could trace the place of the desired smell.
You walked forward a bit, your eyes still closed.
‘I don't think I should be leaving the den...’ you thought to yourself.
You opened your eyes deciding against leaving the territory. The fragrance of Jeonghan only continued to grow, making you feed yourself off it.
“Why are you up?” You turned to the side to see Jeonghan, sitting on a sturdy brown oak log.
You gulped, feeling yourself get more addicted to his smell. Without a word being slipped from your lips, you took steps toward him, your feet crunching the leaves. Jeonghan's dream-like face was lit by the white moonlight.
Without hesitation, when you got close enough to him, you pulled his face into your hands and leaned down to lock lips with him.
Jeonghan was certainly not expecting that from you but with your fragrance all around, he couldn't help but comply. His hands traveled to the sides of your waist as his lips began to move in accordance with yours.
It was like a purple fire was just ignited around the two of you. Your hands ran through his hair, on the back of his head. It was getting so hard to breathe because it was just like an addiction that was drowning the both of you drunkards.
Both of you grow more immersed in each other as your hands touch each other's bodies and your lips exchange; losing yourselves deeper and deeper into the addictive scents the both of you hold.
-
Jeonghan was sleeping soundly when his blanket was yanked off his body.
“Jeonghan! Wake up! The pack where your soulmate is from just invited us to go hunting together!” Joshua, one of his brothers said.
“Oh really?” Jeonghan asked, half asleep.
His mind processed the words Joshua said again before jolting up in bed.
“What?”
“Hurry up, we're going hunting!” Seungcheol, the leader of the 13-boy pack.
He smiled proudly, realizing that he was now accepted as your soulmate, even though that wasn't what he had his mind on.
Jeonghan ran his fingers through his hair, then to the back of his head, feeling your lingering touch from the night before, where the two of you bloomed beautifully.
He could almost see it again, the white, penetrating moonlight changing into a purple beam.

House Isekai: Shadowbringers Act 2, Part 1 - Withering Flower
House Isekai Shadowbringers AU Masterlist Here
—
“I don’t know if anyone will be seeing this message, whether that be myself or anyone else who comes into this godforsaken tower but...My name is Byleth Eisner. Son of Jeralt Eisner.”
“And my name is Sothis. Goddess of Fodlan...evidently.”
“We’re leaving this here in some hopes that this cycle can be broken, and to fix this mistake before it could ever happen...Our memories will be wiped after this, so we want to say everything we can before...before we forget.”
“And if anyone else besides our future selves sees this message, please give them to Byleth at Garreg Mach Monastery.”
“Now that the pleasantries are out of the way...We need to start at the beginning.”
----
[’Neath Dark Waters - Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers OST]
Byleth looked at the reflection of himself in the tower. It was a floating crystal and after taking a deep breath, began speaking into it.
======
“Our journey-
No.
Your journey.
It is your journey that we are banking our hopes in.
It is your journey that will give you a different experience, and prevent you from committing the worst atrocity this world has ever seen.
And so, it falls to me to tell you how you got here...
Your journey began when you and Sothis woke up from a dream that had been reoccurring. A dream of a battle at Zanado.
You two did not have any memory of partaking in the fight, yet it was clear as day, despite the fact it had happened centuries ago.
Right as Jeralt was ordering you and the other mercs to prepare for another grueling march, is when your fate would change forever.
You, Sothis, and Jeralt saved three students named Edelgard, Claude, and Dimitri.
They were part of Garreg Mach Monastery, and when the Knights of said monastery came to retrieve them, they convinced Jeralt to take up his former role of Captain.
Something he had never told you until then.
On the way, you exchanged some colorful conversations with them and tried to convince you to join their side.
All of them were next in line to their respective lands, the Adrestian Empire, Leicester Alliance, and Kingdom of Faerghus.
After being informed that you would become a professor, you were to choose your class to teach for that year.
Either out of instinct, or a wild guess, you went with the Blue Lions, led by Dimitri.
Throughout the course of the year, you fought and bled with your students as you accompanied them to various locations across Fodlan, doing the tasks of the Church.
According to Sothis and many others, you did not display any emotions whatsoever. Yet, as the year went on, your wall broke little by little.
And by the end of the year with them, your bond with your students was unbreakable.
...But tragedy would soon strike.
No matter how much time has passed, it is a memory that will never leave you. Everything else will be a blur, but this?
It will be the catalyst to your journey.
Your father was killed saving the students from a Demonic Beast attack in Garreg Mach.
Killed by an Agarthan named Kronya.
In the following month, you march for their known location, eager for revenge. With your class right behind you, refusing to let you fight this alone.
Getting caught in a trap set by Solon, you and Sothis had no choice but to fuse together in order to escape.
Although you would not hear her for a very long time, she would never leave your side.
After successfully getting revenge and fusing with your friend, it is then everyone begins to show their true colors.
You journey to the Tomb of the Goddess and sit upon the very throne Sothis once did by orders of Rhea.
When you sat down, nothing happened, confusing everyone in the room.
But it is here when the Flame Emperor ambushes you and your class, and begin to fight Imperial forces.
And it is here where the Flame Emperor’s identity is revealed, alongside Dimitri’s true self.
Upon seeing that Edelgard was the Flame Emperor, he snapped and became unhinged.
Something that was consistent as the month passed on to your next confrontation, when the Adrestian Empire invaded and the battle’s outcome was a stalemate, both sides losing far too many men to occupy the Monastery.
However, during that battle, you fell into the canyon, where you went missing for five years.
It was only thanks to the intervention of Sothis that you were alive when you awoke, though she sent you five years into the future.
And with another year, you singlehandedly turned the war around against the Empire.
And became the saving grace to Dimitri’s grief-fueled madness.
After months of slowly pushing back the relentless tide of Imperial forces, you brought the war to a final showdown at Enbarr.
And it was then that Edelgard had finally met her match, and was killed by Dimitri.
A few days later, you and Dimitri swore to help repair Fodlan and its wartorn lands together.
Although, there was some part of you that wished to fix this outcome. To see if you could do anything different in order to prevent the war from happening.
Sothis had granted you a power known as Divine Pulse, which allowed you to turn back time.
Although it could only be used as a way to restart at most a day back, you called upon her power, and sent yourself back to where it all began.
The day you met Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude.
Instead of choosing the Blue Lions, you taught the Black Eagles.
Although you had knowledge of prior events, such as Jeralt’s death, nothing you said could stop it from happening.
When the fated day arrived at the Tomb, you sided with Edelgard.
To find out why she did what she did in the previous timeline.
To your surprise, you found a much softer side to the brutal dictator.
She held compassion and love for her fellow man.
And unending loyalty to you.
The same could not be said for Rhea, who had shown her colors as a ruthless and hellbent on getting her lost mother back, Sothis.
After defeating Claude and Dimitri, you and Edelgard killed Rhea in a burning city.
When that battle was over, you began to question who was right or wrong.
Who held the moral high ground in this conflict?
Calling upon Sothis again, you went back in time once more and sided with the Church to defeat Edelgard.
What had driven Rhea to similar madness like Dimitri?
You were confident about the answer until you finally found the real side to Rhea. A side she dared not show anyone but family.
Rhea harbored similar feelings, though it came after a near fatal conflict between you and Church forces.
She was nothing more than a daughter wishing to see her mother again.
Feelings you could sympathize with.
Rhea was alive but broken, Dimitri and Edelgard were dead, and Claude was missing.
This was not the ideal outcome you had wished for either.
That meant going back to the beginning.
Although this next attempt would only be your fourth time going back, you and Sothis had lost track of how many years had come and gone since you first met the students.
Going back this time and choosing the Golden Deer class, something new happened.
You met the Ashen Wolves, the secret Fourth House of Garreg Mach.
You discovered what happened to your mother, Sitri, and what Rhea was doing to get her mother back at any cost.
After saving the class, they went their separate ways and the year went on as normal, powerless to stop the events that had already been set in motion.
The journey with Claude did not have the outcome you desired either, although at the very least you now knew what he was doing the entire time in all the previous timelines.
You had put an end to the Agarthan agenda together and worked together to unite Fodlan under the banner of the Leicester Alliance, with Edelgard and Dimitri dead, with Rhea broken.
This had happened again.
And again.
And again.
Nothing you were doing could stop their deaths.
It was beginning to drive you mad.
So mad, you went back one final time.
[The Decision - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 OST]
Choosing the Black Eagles once more, you did everything you could to change anything. Even the smallest thing.
But by the time Jeralt’s death had occurred for the fifth time, you had chosen the final option.
You would unite all four against you, by becoming something far worse than the Empire and Church.
You would destroy this cruel world by forming the Knights of Nemesis.
Recruiting the help of Alois, Leonie, and Shamir, and your original mercenary group, you escaped the Battle of Garreg Mach Monastery and pursued your own agenda.
Little by little, you destroyed the bases of Those Who Slither and stole their technology.
Finally avenging Jeralt by killing Thales, you had become the most dangerous group in Fodlan.
And it was there, where you made your biggest mistake.
Creating the Javelin of Liberation.
Many years would pass in your war against Edelgard and Rhea as your Knights built the Javelin, and you had forced the entire war to a standstill.
But due to your brutal tactics and unforgiving nature, forged by four timelines worth of loss and death, you would alienate your very own allies.
Leonie was the first one to act by revealing your plans to the Leicester Alliance, calling a summit to Derdriu.
And when you and your escort reached Gronder Field on the way to the Monastery...
---
(Edelgard) “Years ago we fought here as classmates…”
(Dimitri) “And now, we stand together against someone who was once a friend.”
(Claude) “As far as big class reunions go, this one’s got to be the worst one in history…”
(Rhea) “There is to be no mercy for these heretics. Do I make myself clear?”
(Catherine) “Crystal.”
(Seteth) “Loud and clear.”
---
After a bloody battle with heavy casualties on both sides, you retreated back to the Monastery, with all three nations hot on your heels.
Rhea was killed by having the Javelin fired prematurely, and as a result, you had lost your connection to Sothis...For a time.
The final battle approached and you stood near the top, awaiting your fate.
If you won, then everything would be blasted into oblivion. Your struggle would finally end.
And if you didn’t, well then your goal was mostly accomplished. To have everyone alive and united.
But things didn’t go as planned either way...
---
(Claude) “Think about this! Do you think blowing us all to hell is going to solve every problem that we have?!”
(Byleth) “Do you not think I haven’t thought of this? I don’t know the answer, nor will I ever. But, we’ll just have to have faith in the next generation once it fires.”
(Dimitri) “Are you hearing yourself right now?! What about the hundreds of innocents you’ve put down to get here?! And the millions you’re about to kill today!”
(Byleth) “It’s for the greater good.”
(Claude) “The greater good?! What do you think Jeralt would have to say about this greater good?! The people and students you swore to protect?!”
(Byleth) “You will not lecture to me of what he would have wanted! Us as a species are a blight! We will never have the will to move forward and change things for the better!-”
(Edelgard) “PROFESSOR!”
Everyone turned to Edelgard, who was stepping closer to Byleth.
(Edelgard) “Professor I’m…I’m so sorry for what I have done.”
(Byleth) “…!”
(Edelgard) “I…I understand where you’re coming from. I do. All my family is dead, and I wanted to destroy everything the Church stood for because of the crests, Rhea, everything…But…
I never wanted this war to happen. I never wanted any of us to fight each other! I never wanted to fight you, my dear professor! 5 years ago, you showed me just how beautiful and how tragic this world is!
I’m sorry for all the pain I must have caused you back then. Please, stop this madness and…and we can find a way together to make the world a better place!”
(Byleth) “Edelgard…”
(Edelgard) “Yes?”
(Byleth) “…Nothing would make me happier than to accept your hand, and leave this all behind but…I can never be forgiven for what I’ve done to everyone…To you.”
(Edelgard) “…I understand.”
She unsheathed her axe, Dimitri and Claude moving to her side.
The battle was one sided since you no longer could properly wield the Sword of the Creator.
However, you did not care.
The battle was decided when the Javelin of Liberation finally deployed.
(Edelgard) “Professor…It’s over.”
Byleth looked up to the spell that was displaying the status of the Javelin of Liberation, and smiled.
(Byleth) “You’re right…it is.”
The three looked up to the spell, and saw the meter was full.
(Dimitri) “SHIT!-”
...
(Leonie) “D-Don’t worry about us, the core…!”
They all looked to the core which was pulsating faster and faster.
(Shamir) “Shit, it’s about to activate!”
(Alois) “Y-you-agh! N-Need to overload it with magic! HURRY!”
Dorothea, Linhardt, Lysithea, and Annette all started to cast their strongest spells and aimed it at the core.
(Shamir) “NOW!”
Right as they aimed their hands at the core, it was too late. It was flashing a bright white that enveloped the entire room.
And in the distance, the Javelin fired into the air, and made contact with the ground.
Dimitri, Edelgard, Claude, and you were sent flying backwards.
You had expected nothing would be alive after that hit, but you were wrong.
You looked back to the world, and it was still very much alive.
Although, the skies had darkened to a sickening white and grey hue, the temperature dropping fast.
It would not be long before the world turned into a frozen hellscape.
And much to your horror, the Javelin had not killed everyone in one fell swoop.
You just ensured everyone would die a slow and painful death.
You had overestimated what the technology of the Agarthans were capable of. Not even they could create a world ending device, and your carelessness and overconfidence costed you the world, and those you called friends...
When you turned around, Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude were killed from the fall, while the forces under your command were engaged in a civil war.
Several hours later, you did not see any of your former students or faculty member which meant one thing: they were killed too.
It was just you and the men under your command.
Not having the option to turn back time, you and the Knights of Nemesis did everything they could to find any device to turn back time with the technology you had.
The Knights carried the technology back to the area with the most magical readings: Zanado.
And there, you all had created the tower, half out of the materials you had brought, and the materials there. It was crude, but it would get the job done.
And...It was here you could finally reunite with an old friend. And gave a final message to yourself.
I don’t know when or how you’ll see this message but...Find us. Before it’s too late. Don’t do what I did. And forge yourself a path that can save everyone, truly.”
======
[’Neath Dark Waters - Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers OST]
Byleth put the crystal down and took a deep breath.
This would be the last thing he would record before the timeline was reset yet again.
But this time, he had no idea what was going to happen. Sothis was here, yes, but her power had greatly diminished by now.
She was only visible thanks to the Zanado Tower.
He looked outside an opening out the tower, and stared at the graves he had made for the Knights of Nemesis.
They stayed with him until the end, whether out of pure loyalty, or wanting to reset what they had done.
Byleth would never know the answer.
(Byleth) “...WIth the tower restoring your power, you should be able to reset time once more with your Divine Pulse.”
(Sothis) “Hm...”
Sothis raised her hand and began drawing energy as Byleth sat down.
(Byleth) “...Thank you. I don’t expect forgiveness for my actions-”
(Sothis) “Don’t apologize to me. I said I’d be with you no matter what. And this is no exception. Apologize to those we have lost.”
(Byleth) “...”
(Sothis) “Do you think it was a good idea leaving that message? Perhaps this is something your...next self needs to know.”
(Byleth) “It isn’t but he will have to. Otherwise we’re doomed to repeat these exact mistakes. And maybe they won’t be so lucky to get the technology we have right now.”
(Sothis) “I suppose that’s true.”
They both remained in silence before Sothis finally lowered her hand and turned to Byleth.
(Sothis) “Child. My powers in combination with Agarthan, Goddess, and manmade magic...This could be a catastrophic reset.”
(Byleth) “I know-”
(Sothis) “There is no telling the amount of damage we can cause.”
(Byleth) “I know!”-
(Sothis) “And we could possibly tear apart reality itsel-”
(Byleth) “I KNOW!...I know, Sothis...”
Byleth’s back slid down the wall and his head looked up at the ceiling.
(Byleth) “I know. But I have to try something...Hah, even though I had the hindsight of how Dimitri and Rhea acted, I ended up becoming exactly like them...”
Sothis floated over to Byleth and attempted to hold his hand.
To both of their surprise, they actually managed to feel something, and it was then Sothis held his hand tightly and took a deep breath.
(Sothis) “...Goodbye, Byleth. And thank you, for everything.”
(Byleth) “...See you around, Sothis.”
Byleth closed his eyes as Sothis invoked the Zanado Tower.
...
...
...
...
Byleth slowly opened his eyes and saw Jeralt standing over him.
Sothis yawned obnoxiously, and Byleth tried to do his best to ignore her and not weird his father out.
(Jeralt) “Were you having that dream again?”
(Byleth) “Yeah...something about a war.”
(Jeralt) “Massive armies clashing on a vast field, right? There hasn’t been a battle like that in over three centuries. In any case, just put that out of your mind for right now-”
As Jeralt began to explain how dangerous it was to let your mind wander, Sothis as if on cue yawned even louder as she floated over to Byleth.
(Sothis) “Ugh, we’re up already?”
(Byleth) Not now, Sothis.
(Sothis) “Why? What’s he explaining to you that you don’t already know?”
Even though Byleth couldn’t express much, he was certainly feeling annoyed.
SLAM!
(Mercenary) “Jeralt! Sir! Sorry to barge in but your presence is needed!”
(Jeralt) “What’s happened?”
Outside...
(Dimitri) “Please, forgive our intrusion! We would not bother you were our situation not dire!”
(Jeralt) “What do a bunch of kids like you want at this hour?-”
FWOOM!
A black and purple portal appeared behind them, spitting out four screaming people as they landed with a violent thud.
(Sothis) “Woah.”
(Jeralt) “Oh, what now?!”
(Byleth) “Hm?”
(Boy in green cloak) “Ack, get the hell off me!”
(Girl with blue hair) “S-SHUT UP! YOU LANDED ON ME!”
(Girl in red) “I...hurk! Might be sick from that!”
(Girl in yellow) “P-People!”
(Edelgard) “What in the?”
(Claude) “Today just keeps getting interesting, doesn’t it?”
The four of them quickly got up in a panicked manner.
(Boy in green) “WHO THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS?!”
(Girl with blue hair) “Hey, don’t piss them off, you idiot!”
(Girl in yellow) “H-Hello there! We are adventurers and...We appear to be lost!”
(Jeralt) “Clearly.”
(Byleth) “Who are you?”
(Boy in green) “...Well uh...That’s Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness. And I’m Kazuma, I guess.”
...
[More than Truth - Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers OST]
(Byleth) “And that was our first contact with someone from another universe...”
Sothis nodded.
(Sothis) “So then...Six years later, they help us end the war in Fodlan, then we send the four of them home.”
Byleth looked at the nearby crystal walls.
They were replaying memories when Kazuma and his group first arrived in Fodlan.
Kazuma and Darkness went with the Blue Lions, while Megumin and Aqua had gone to the Black Eagles and Golden Deer respectively.
They caused some chaos in Fodlan with their stupidity, but they saved lives. And when they finally went home, Byleth went to sleep that night, and when he woke up...
...
(Byleth) “D-Dad...?”
When Byleth turned to his left, his eyes became wider.
(Sothis) “...W-wha...?!”
(Jeralt) “Where’d that come from, kid?”
(Byleth) “You’re both alive?!”
Jeralt was taken aback by how suddenly expressive his son was.
(Jeralt) “Clearly you’re still out of it. Come on, get up.”
(Sothis) “B-But we’re fused together aren’t we? How am I-”
FWOOM!
A black and purple portal appeared behind them, spitting out at least a dozen people with a violent thud.
As it finished, a massive iron golem was teleported behind them.
(Boy in red) “What in the world...?!”
(Woman in yellow and blue) “Crap, is everyone okay?!”
(Small girl in green) “Y-Yes, Instructor Sara!”
Byleth and Sothis looked at each other.
(Byleth) “Doesn’t this seem like-”
(Sothis) “Kazuma and his group!”
After a wave of confusion among the group, they got around to introducing themselves.
(Boy in red) “My name is Rean Schwarzer of Class VII.”
...
(Sothis) “Then came Class VII.”
Byleth nodded as their memories were displayed on the crystal wall.
They could both hear their words almost clear as day as they walked down the hallway, but did their best to ignore it.
(Byleth) “After Class VII was sent home, we were reset back to the beginning yet again...”
(Sothis) “Then it was...The Phantom Thieves.”
(Byleth) “Right. Then, Megumi, S.E.E.S, the Investigation Team, Denizens of Nazarick, Slayer, and lastly the School-Living Club.”
They reached the end of the hallway.
Each time they had finished their journey with the newcomers, they were reset back when they first woken up by Jeralt, and the following group would take their place until last time.
Before the reset could happen, they chose to reset time themselves with Divine Pulse.
They had no idea if it would work, but they had to try something to break out of this loop.
It resulted in the creation of House Isekai.
Instead of the groups appearing one at a time, they all showed up at once.
And it was now that they all went back to their respective homes together, but Sothis and Byleth could already feel the timeline about to reset once more.
And it was only now they discovered a tower had formed in Zanado.
They had no idea what was inside, but after walking through it, they were starting to get an idea.
Byleth saw at the end of the hallway, a small crystal laying on the ground.
(Byleth) “What is...?”
The crystal displayed a small window, showing the two the contents.
(Byleth) “Is...this a mirror or something?-”
(Crystal) “I don’t know if anyone will be seeing this message, whether that be myself or anyone else who comes into this godforsaken tower but...My name is Byleth Eisner. Son of Jeralt Eisner.”
Byleth and Sothis looked at the Crystal that was playing the recording, and let it play all the way.
Once it was done, they were speechless.
(Byleth) “I...I caused all this?”
Byleth was absolutely horrified by this revelation. He looked at the tower and the crystal mirrors around him, struggling to get his mind wrapped around it.
And it was then the crystal mirrors began to display the routes he had taken prior.
Before the memories of his past were wiped.
(Sothis) “So, this tower is why we keep getting sent back and brought the others in?”
(Byleth) “There’s...There’s no way I would do this! I wouldn’t do any of this!”
(Sothis) “I do not think we can deny what is in front of us. How do we prevent this? No, no. How do we prevent being sent back in time again?!”
(Byleth) “They reset time with Divine Pulse while also using the tower. Perhaps we could try-”
(Sothis) “What?! Child, you heard what that caused, it caused us to lose our memories and rip apart dimensions!”
(Byleth) “Well we have to try something! We did EVERYTHING we were given, fought and bled with our students! WE EVEN HAD OUR DAMN PERFECT ENDING! AND STILL! STILL WE’RE GOING TO LOSE EVERYTHING!”
The memories began to overwhelm the two, hearing echoes of their past finally catch up to them after so many years and timelines.
(Byleth) “...Sothis. We have to. We have to do things right and save everyone.”
(Sothis) “This is a terrible idea.”
Sothis sighed as she began to draw energy into herself from the tower.
(Sothis) “It could barely handle one time, I’m not sure if a second time will-”
KABOOOOOOM!
The entire tower shook violently, forcing Sothis to stop.
(Byleth) “What the hell?!”
The tower began emitting an almost ear piercing screech as everyone’s voices became too much to bear.
(Byleth) “SOTHIS, DO IT NOW!”
(Sothis) “R-RIGHT, HANG ON!”
Sothis raised her hand once more and everything began to turn back in time.
All they had done was reset once again.
Byleth opened his eyes and reached for his head, it pounding in pain.
(Byleth) “Ugh...”
When he looked around, he noticed that everything around them was still the same.
(Sothis) “Did...Did we do anything?”
(Byleth) “I’m not sure. We’re not back at Jeralt’s so maybe we need to-”
Before he could finish his sentence, they heard someone break into the tower.
The reflections in the crystal walls showed multiple men in black robes walking into the tower, seemingly examining it.
(Sothis) “Agarthans?”
(Byleth) “Wait a second isn’t that...?”
The Flame Emperor teleported in and looked around the area with the Agarthans.
(Byleth) “Edelgard?”
(Sothis) “She isn’t supposed to be here! We resolved everything with House Isekai so does that mean?-”
(Byleth) “We’re back in time again. But if we’re here then...who’s in our place?”
One of the Agarthans made their way up to the tower and was completely alone, getting closer to Byleth’s location.
Byleth and Sothis hid near the stairs as they heard the Agarthan walk up.
When the Agarthan made their way down the hall, Byleth stabbed him in the back with the Sword of the Creator and took his robes.
(Sothis) “What are you doing?”
(Byleth) “Improvising. We don’t know what’s going on, and I’ll be damned if I’m getting us caught.”
After Byleth finished getting dressed, he took the mask off the Agarthan and put it on himself.
(Byleth) “We’re gonna need a name as we figure this out.”
(Sothis) “Hm...I think I know one.”
...
Lahabrea made his way to Remire village and saw Dimitri, Edelgard, and Claude run to the entrance.
(Lahabrea) “So that seems to be correct, so all that’s left is-”
The gate opened, revealing Jeralt, Byleth, and Sothis.
(Lahabrea) “What in the hell...?”
And as if on cue, Kazuma and his group emerged from a portal behind the students.
(Sothis) “Why are there two of us?”
(Lahabrea) “We must have done something to the tower and we used it for the second time...”
Kazuma’s voice echoed through both of their heads, slowly joined in by the rest of his group.
(Lahabrea) “...We need to go back to the tower and figure out what’s going on.”
(Sothis) “Right.”
Sothis disappeared and before Lahabrea started moving, he took one last look at the Byleth in his place.

So it’s kinda like my thing now that whenever I enjoy something with an ensemble cast, I gotta assign each character a song by The Mountain Goats, so welcome to Fire Emblem: Three Houses as Mountain Goats songs.
Black Eagles
Edelgard: Going Invisible 2 “I'm gonna burn it all down today and sweep all the ashes away.” This song feels like her mantra for defiantly destroying everything corrupt no matter the cost. Also the slow and increasingly intense performance of the song just feels exactly how her plan unfolds.
Hubert: Genesis 30:3 “Open up the promise of the day, drive the dark things away. I will do what you ask me to do because of how I feel about you.” I know this song is about having a baby, but the absolute yet tender loyalty feels perfect for Hubert.
Ferdinand: Sicilian Crest “Look to the West, look to the man bearing the Sicilian crest.” This song captures the exuberance of Ferdinand while also being about blinding overconfidence and hey! It has the word crest! Fun!
Bernadetta: In the Craters of the Moon “If the strain proves too much, give up right away. If the light hurts your eyes, stay in your room all day.” Honestly, TMG is a very Bernie band what with all the paranoid isolation and abusive fathers, but I like that this one captures her sense of epic-level dread over even small interactions.
Dorothea: Linda Blair was Born Innocent “Hungry for love, ready to drown, so tie down the sails, we're going downtown.” For a girl who just wants love, a song named after a movie about the exploitation of teen girls.
Linhardt: Sourdoire Valley Song “Dream the pleasant dreams that people dream when they grow up down here.” A weird song about peaceful Paleolithic life that seems to align with the peaceful, sleepy world Linhardt prefers.
Caspar: For Charles Bronson “Set you sights on good fortune, concentrate, pull back the hammer, try to hold the gun straight.” A song about giving your all, earning your place, and having the heart of a champion despite everything.
Petra: Deuteronomy 2:10 “I have no fear of anyone, I'm dumb and wild and free. I am a flightless bird and there'll be no more after me.” This ode to a captured animal who is the last of its kind seems to align with Petra’s existence as a sort of exotic hostage in the empire.
Blue Lions
Dimitri: Maybe Sprout Wings “I thought of old friends, the one's who'd gone missing, said all their names three times. Phantoms in the early dark, canaries in the mines.” This is just the most heartrending song about waking at night from a dream of people who are now dead, just as Dimitri is haunted by his own ghosts.
Dedue: Sax Rohmer #1 “I am coming home to you, with my own blood in my mouth.” Loyalty, but this time with Dedue’s penchant for having to fight through literal hell for Dimitri in every route.
Felix: Spent Gladiator 2 “Stay alive. Maybe spit some blood at the camera. Just stay alive, stay forever alive.” Since Felix is committed to fighting for survival rather than heroic sacrifice, this furiously defiant song about continuing to live despite terrible odds seems appropriate.
Ashe: Sept 15 1983 “Try try your whole life to be righteous and be good. Wind up on your own floor, choking on blood.” A song about an unjust killing for Ashe who has to reconcile his noble ideals with the unjust death of his adoptive father.
Sylvain: No Children “And I hope when you think of me years down the line you can't find one good thing to say. And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out, you'd stay the hell out of my way.” I mean come on! The title, No CREST BABIES, also its like the ultimate anti-love song for the ultimate anti-love guy.
Mercedes: Unmasked! “And by way of honoring the things we once both held dear. I will reveal you. I will reveal you.” I imagine this being sung both to Jeritza, masked both literally and metaphorically, with all the kindness mixed with brutal honesty that is Mercedes.
Annette: Genesis 3:23 “Living room to bedroom to kitchen, familiar and warm. Hours we spent starving within these walls, sounds of a distant storm.” A song about breaking in to your old house aligns with Annette’s own troubled memories of a childhood marred by paternal abandonment.
Ingrid: Age of Kings “Wolves in the hallway gaining ground. Reach down to the moment when I should have said something true. Shadows and their sources now stealing away with you.” A song about the loss of a heroic past for the idealistic girl who lost her fiancé and watched her own father try to marry her off for money.
Golden Deer
Claude: Heel Turn 2 “Spent too much of my life now trying to play fair. Throw my better self overboard, shoot at him when he comes up for air.” Claude is so interesting as both a brutal pragmatist but also a dreamer. I really like how he can always survive the game if you let him, despite the compromises he has to make.
Hilda: Riches and Wonders “I am healthy, I am whole, but I have poor impulse control. And I want to go home, but I am home.” This one is hard since Hilda is a pretty low angst character, but I feel like this song walks the line between her love of the finer things in life versus her eventually learning to stand on her own.
Leonie: The Legend of Chavo Guerrero “And I need justice in my life: here it comes. Look high, it's my last hope. Chavo Guerrero, coming off the top rope.” Replace Chavo with Jeralt and we have a perfect song about hero-worship and how it can get us through hardship.
Lorenz: The Mess Inside “Tried to find the creeping sense of dread with temporal things, most of the time I guess I felt alright.” This was another hard one, but given Lorenz’s persistent failure as a lady’s man it seems right that he would just be enjoying luxuries to distract himself from his lack of love.
Raphael: Animal Mask “That was when we were young and green, in the dawning hours of our team. Some things you will remember, some things stay sweet forever.” One of the few genuinely sweet and happy TMG songs for a sweet and good boy. I am conceptualizing this as being about his childhood friendship with Ignatz and his role as a protector to his sister.
Ignatz: Unicorn Tolerance “Get a momentary chance to see the thing I've been trying to beat to death, the soft creature that I used to be.” A song about forcing yourself to seem tough when you actually love unicorns, just as Ignatz tries to be a knight for his family, but he just loves art and semi-horny religious iconography.
Marianne: In the Hidden Places “I turned my face away and I shut my eyes tight. Dreamed about the flowers that hide from the light, on dark hillsides, in the hidden places.” A song to sum up Marianne’s desire to keep herself away from anyone she might endanger.
Lysithea: The Autopsy Garland “You don't wanna see these guys without their masks on, or their gloves.” This is more metaphorical, but the song is about the abuse of Judy Garland throughout her childhood, which parallels Lysithea’s experience with TWSITD.
Ashen Wolves
Yuri: Fire Editorial “Lord of the hidden pocket knife. Tawdry dreams all come to life. Save yourselves, save this town, save everything not nailed down.” If anyone deserves to be called the lord of the hidden pocket knife, it’s Yuri. Also, the repeated chorus to save the town aligns with his savage defense of Abyss.
Balthus: Color in Your Cheeks “Come on in, we haven't slept for weeks, drink some of this, it'll put color in your cheeks.” A welcoming yet rowdy song for the rowdiest of boys. Also he is like an actual adult so he can serve liquor.
Hapi: Possum by Night “All your pack dogs have your say. Let me just find my own way. Moon in the trees my guide. Walk with my jaw hinged wide.” Hapi with her prickly attitude and forced loneliness seems right for this heroic little possum.
Constance: Game Shows Touch Our Lives “Our house sinking into disrepair, Ah, but look at this showroom filled with fabulous prizes.” The feeling of a little brightness in the despair of something fallen makes sense for Constance’s efforts to reclaim the glory of her house.

Hunters of Flesh and Money: Part 3
Trelawny has another job for you, but this job comes with a familiar comrade.
Arthur Morgan x Reader
“Shit,” You sighed as you dropped the corpse back down to the ground. Nine cents was all the poor bastard had. With a wipe of the brow you lifted the body and threw it into Flat Iron Lake, it will wash ashore in a couple of days but by then it would be impossible to track down the culprit. If there was one constant in your work it was your thoroughness.
With a sharp whistle, Garbanzo flew around the bend. When you reached into your pocket for your handkerchief you audibly cursed. It was lost somewhere between here and Roanoak Ridge so you washed your gloves and arms best you could in the lake. The water was warm and murky, not ideal for cleaning.
Garbanzo rested his head against your shoulder and you dried your hands to give him a pat. “Sun’s still high,” You said to the big horse. “Think we got time to go visit our old friend?”
The horse did not respond, but it really wasn’t up to him. Lemoyne was hot as ever, your clothes stuck to every inch of skin they touched and left you feeling sticky and uncomfortable. The smell of body odor was wafting into your nostrils with every gallop, maybe it was time for a bath. As you approached the center of town, you paused. Trelawny was still staying in his caravan north of Rhodes, it wouldn’t take long to meet him.
As you entered the saloon, you were greeted by the same old saloon gals, they were always happy to see you- it wasnt often they were paid in money and pleasure. Your favorite girl, a young blond waved at your from atop the spiral staircase. “Hey honey,” she called. “You here for me?”
You laughed, “not tonight sweetheart,” you placed a coin on the bar and slid it to the owner. “Just a bath today.”
The man behind the counter nodded, “Sylvia will have it ready for ya, you know where to go.”
You nodded, “Thanks Pete.”
Rhodes had become your semi-permanent home, as much as it bothered you to stay in once place for too long Sadie’s company was enough to keep you grounded. You would meet her at the saloon regularly, she would tell you about he people she rode with and you would tell her about the jobs you had been taking. She would bring up Arthur often, you tried not to linger on the subject. You hadn’t seen him since the night he came and checked on you and Trelawny after the whole kidnapping incident. You had made the mistake of admitting to Sadie he was a handsome man and she wouldn’t let you live it down since. She seemed to think you were a perfect match but the thought of being intimate with another person was scary. You had only loved once, and it ended with her being put six feet under because of you. When you needed a fix, saloon girls and random strangers at the bar were enough. It was safer for the men and women you slept with to remain anonymous, for their own good.
You couldn’t help the sigh of pleasure as you slipped your body into the warm water. The bubbles tickled your nostrils as you submerged yourself. It had been far too long since your last bath, you made a mental note to do this more often. As you began scrubbing your head, there was a gentle knock on the door. “Need some help, darlin’?”
You smiled at the beautiful blonde headed woman. “Well now, you know I cain’t deny you Ms. Sylvia.”
She giggled as she dipped her hands into the water, “it’s been so long since you called for me I reckoned you forgot bout me.”
“Forget bout you? Never.” Her hands glided across your arms and you melted under her touch. “I just been busy, you know me always gettin’ into somethin’.”
“Well, at least make an effort to come in for a bath every once ‘n a while, you’re covered in dirt head to toe!” Her hands moved down your back and rubbed slowly. Her lips were close to your ear now as she whispered, “you’re mighty tense honey, you sure you don’t want a bed for the night? No charge.”
She placed the softest of kisses behind your ear and you inhaled sharply. “No charge, huh?”
“That’s right.” Her lips were moving down your neck now.
“Well, who could deny that? I think I’m all clean now.”
You started to pull yourself from the tub and she pushed you back down with a soft chuckle, “not yet you ain’t, no need to be impatient, we got all night.”
You couldn’t refuse that, so you relaxed under her nimble fingers. Trelawny could wait until tomorrow.
The beams from the morning sun poured in the window and woke you. Sylvia was already gone, slipped out after you passed out. It was better this way, it was too dangerous to get attached. You stared at the ceiling as you puffed a cigarette, in your twenties these flings were nothing, but now? Now you just felt tired. Strangers and night women didn’t fill the void like they used to, with age the hole in your chest grew wider and wider. But this life doesn’t allow a family, doesn’t allow the deeper vulnerability that comes with love. Not without a price, and you had already paid it once.
You stretched and pulled yourself from the bed. Your clothes were scattered about the floor and you yawned as you retrieved them. “Shit,” you whispered as you fummed with the buttons on your shirt; the last button had popped off in the frenzy of lusting hands. You examined yourself in the mirror, your clothes were worn and dusty. Little holes were beginning to wear in the arm pits of your shirt. The closest tailor was in Saint Denis, and god did you hate it there. It would almost be worth the ride all the way to Blackwater just to avoid the congested city. But that would have to wait, you needed money.
The downside to staying so close to town for the sake of your old friend was the lack of animals around Rhodes. Sure there were plenty of deer- whitetails and pronghorn a plenty but you lived for big game. Elk, bears, cougars- that was what gave you the thrill and most importantly they were the big money makers. Maybe after you get done with Trelawny you would write to Sadie and let her know you were heading North West for a couple of weeks. Surely she would be safe with the others. You felt silly, of course she would be safe they saved her when she needed them most. This gave you a pang of guilt, had you been there for her when she needed you, maybe Jake would still be alive right now and maybe she wouldn’t look like a dead woman walking. A part of you wanted to stick around, but you couldn’t revolve your life around her and she wouldn’t want you to.
When you exited the saloon, you headed for the stable. Garbanzo whinnied excitedly when he saw you enter. The man working the stable looked up from grooming his horse. “Take it you’re here for pick up?”
You nodded. He pointed lazily towards the stall. “It’s unlocked, you can go ahead and grab ‘em.” He stood. “That’s one well behaved horse ya got there.”
You gave him a pat, “that’s my beanie boy.” You turned to the stable hand. “You damn right, best horse I ever had.”
You paid the stable hand well and led the hulking horse outside. The morning sun was rising steadily and the heat rose by the minute. As you rode to the bundle of caravans, you tried to remain in as much shade as possible; the midsummer heat was damn near unbearable.
When you approached, Trelawny was in his same spot reading his same book. He looked up as you dismounted. “Ah, hello old friend!”
“Hey there Trelawny. Looks like yer bout done with that book there.”
“Ah yes,” he folded down the page and closed it. “I assume you aren’t here to discuss literature.”
You chuckled and rubbed your neck, “naw, but I’ll always listen. Used to be a reader myself before I got in knee deep with the law.”
He extended the book to you, “here take it, that is if you’re still literate.”
You waved your hands in denial, “You ain’t gotta do that, I could pick up a book next time I find one.”
“But I insist! I’ve read this one so many times I know what the next word is before I read it.” His tone turned solemn. “Please, take it. Think of it as a small payment for my eternal debt to you.”
You scratched your nose as you took the book. “Thank you, Josiah. I’ll be sure to read it.” You leaned against the railing of the small porch. “You got anything for me to do today?”
“Ah yes, he straightened in his seat. “You’re an avid hunter, yes?”
You looked at the pile of furs on your horse and turned back to Trelawny with a smirk. “Guess you could say that.”
“Well how do you feel about hunting down some wolves?”
You spat on the ground. “Shit, I’ll kill anything worth killin’.”
He nodded, “good, good. A farmer down at Bolger Glade is paying well for the skins of the wolves who have taken a liking to his farm. Says they’ve been eating up his livestock.”
With a nod you mounted your horse. “Sounds like my kinda job. Ain’t far from here neither. I’ll come back when I get done if it ain’t too late.”
“I look forward to your return.”
You tipped your hat to him and you were off. Trelawny watched you disappear over the horizon. Something was nagging him, he immediately felt uneasy about sending you by yourself.
You frowned at the bloodied corpse. He sure looked like a farmer, with a grimace you wondered if there would be anyone to pay you. Well, if anything the butch will pay well for the furs. The tracks were a winding mess and the farther you followed, the more evident it was this was more than a couple of lone wolves. You clutches your rifle tight, a wolf can be taken down easily with one shot but with this many you were beginning to feel uneasy.
You followed the tracks to a pile of bones, covered in teeth marks. You counted at least four sets of tracks. Nothing you hadn’t dealt with before, you inhaled then exhaled deeply. As you stood, the hairs on the back of your neck stood on end. As you turned you heard the snarl. Coming on you fast we’re three big grey wolves. You backed away as you put a bullet in the skull of the first. As you reloaded, you whistled for your horse. The second wolf was almost on you when you shot it clean between the eyes. The third followed right behind, hardly giving you time to reload. It knocked you to the ground, but not before you pressed the gun to its chest and fired. Luckily it only knocked you to the ground, no blood was shed. Your eyes studied the woods around you, one more wolf was left, that you were certain. You whistled again, where was Garbanzo?
You turned around to search, the big animal didn’t scare easily but wolves were one of the few exceptions. He was on the far side of the field, trotting wearily towards you. Another growl from behind you drew your attention back to the woods. It was fast, but not fast enough. You had already reloaded and the wolf was making a beeline straight for you, an easy kill. A single bullet and the wolf fell forward. With another look around, you finally allowed yourself to relax. As you began skinning the first wolf, Garbanzo trotted up behind you. When you loaded the skin, you gave him a pat. Most of the pelts were quite perfect, except the one that knocked you to your feet. You frowned at the poor pelt as you examined it before stowing it.
The last wolf was the farthest away, lying just on the edge of the wood. You wiped the sweat from your brow and skinned the wolf quickly. It was afternoon now and the heat was sweltering. As you slid your knife along the spine of the wolf, Garbanzo whinnied. “I’m bout done, ‘Banzo just hold on.”
A branch snapped behind you, you looked up in time to see the huge black wolf mid-jump. Before you could react, it’s claws were in your back. You threw your elbow back hard and knocked it to the ground. Your rifle was back on the horse, you drew your knife. In order to time it right, you would have to make a risky move and allow yourself to act as bait. You crouched low to the ground as the wolf circled you, you circled with it so it couldn’t pounce your back again. With a snarl and a bark it charged. Lightning fast, the wolf was on top of you, one arm held up above your body to protect yourself, the other plunged the knife through the wolf’s jaw. You winced as you pushed the dead weight off you. When you touched your back, you could feel where the wolf’s claws tore through your shirt. Your hand was covered in blood. It’s hind claws tore through your pant leg on your thigh, leaving angry red scratches. Luckily for you, it didn’t break skin.
You quickly loaded the big black wolf into your horse, better to find a safe place to skin it than risk a run in with another wolf. Mounting Garbanzo, you pushed him hard back to Trelawny’s caravan.
You arrived back early evening, you couldn’t feel the blood trickling down your back anymore so you assumed it had stopped bleeding. You had used all your bandaging last week, you prayed Trelawny had some. As you approached, you saw another man standing on the porch talking with Trelawny. Those broad shoulders looked familiar, when he turned you recognized him.
“Howdy fellers,” you greeted the men as you hitched your horse.
“Howdy,” Arthur repeated back with a wave.
Trelawny stood, “Ah, hello my dear girl! Seems as though those wolves didn’t give up much a fight.”
You chuckled lightly and turned and pointed to your back. “Well, I wouldn’t say that.”
Trelawny inhaled sharply, Arthur took two long strides and inspected your back thoroughly, “Shit, you okay?”
You weren’t used to physical contact with other people, his soft prodding hands made you feel uncomfortable but you didn’t shift from under them. “I’ll be fine, may need some new clothes though.” You turned back to face them and looked pointedly down at the gashes in your pants. “I’d say these are done for.”
Trelawny chuckled. “I would be inclined to agree. It’s about time, I thought you’d be in those rags til the day you died.”
You shrugged, “probably. You got any spare bandage I can borrow? Pretty sure the bleeding stopped, just don’t want it to get infected.”
Trelawny frowned, “I’m afraid not my dear.”
You sighed, “guess I could shred this shirt for bandage-“
Arthur interrupted, pulling a roll of bandage and a bottle of whiskey from his satchel. “I gotcha. Sit on down.”
You sat on the crate in front of the fire, his big hands gently pulled the shirt up above the claw marks without revealing your chest. “This okay?” He asked.
You just nodded, his rough hands were surprisingly gentle. You winced in pain as he poured whiskey in the gashes. “Sorry.” He whispered.
“S’ okay.”
He made quick work dressing the wound. You were glad to be facing away from him, his touch filled your brain with static and sent a wave of heat across your face. It was very strange, you didn’t know how to feel about it. When he finished, he pulled your shirt back down and gave you a pat on the shoulder. “Yer good.”
You stood and nodded to him, “Thanks.”
Trelawny cleared his throat, “You wouldn’t happen to be feeling up for another job would you?”
You scratched your head, “depends, does it involve wolves?”
Trelawny laughed heartily. “No, not at all. It should be very easy for you, I just need you and Mr. Morgan here to deliver some supplies.” He scratched his nose. “It really needs to be delivered to Emerald Ranch before sun down. I’m sure Arthur here can handle it on his own though if you aren’t-“
“Nah, I can do it.” You said as you stood. “Emerald Ranch ain’t too far from here anyways, long as there ain’t no distractions we should be able to get there ‘fore night fall.”
“Wonderful!” Trelawny exclaimed. “The wagon is just behind that caravan there.” He pointed past the neighboring shack. “Hurry along now, you’re losing time!”
“Yeah, yeah we’re goin’.” You rolled your eyes as you hitched your horse. “Well be back soon now, ya hear?” He responded with a huff.
“You ready?” Arthur asked as you joined him beside the fire. You nodded.
As you turned Trelawny called back, “be careful this time! You won’t get paid if you wreck the wagon again!”
Arthur smirked, “Again?”
You crossed your arms and your lips pulled into a mischievous grin. “Ain’t never quite got the hang of wagons, always try and go too fast around corners.” You scratched your chin, “come to think of it, I don’t think Trelawny’s given me a delivery job in months. Not since I almost killed myself crashin’ a wagon full a dynamite.”
Arthur laughed as he climbed up the wagon. “No offense, but I think I’d be more comfortable if I drove.”
“None taken,” you said as you took your seat beside him. You pulled your shot gun off your shoulder and into your lap. “And no offense to you Mr. Morgan, but I think I’m better suited as the strong arm anyways.”
His brows flew into his hairline as he scoffed, “I dunno bout that one.” His tone went to a more joking manner. “‘Sides, I’d say my arms are stronger than yours.”
With his free arm he flexed with a goofy smile. He did indeed have very nice arms. You cleared your throat and mirrored his flex. “What’s that phrase, bout the size of the ship?”
He laughed, “It ain’t the size of the ship, it’s the motion of the ocean?” Another laugh. “Guess there’s some truth behind that.”
You giggled, “you seem pretty familiar with the phrase, you use it a lot for compensation?”
Arthur’s face turned bright red and he began to stammer when your eyes glanced pointedly at his trousers. “No-“ he started, more defensive than he meant to sound. “No, I don’t think I got much to worry bout in that department.” His tone sounded more smug.
You chuckled, “Good on you, Mr. Morgan.”
“I ain’t never cared for the whole Mr. This and Ms. That, ya know.”
“Sorry, Mr.” You cut yourself off. “Sorry Arthur.” You looked up at the sky. “Ain’t much stuck with me as far as manners go, ain’t quite sure why but that’s just bout the only thing I remember my parents tellin’ me.”
“You ain’t gotta apologize, I understand.” He scratched his chin in thought. “Guess I don’t really remember much a what my ma tried ta teach me. Ma daddy ain’t never taught me much more than to be a thief.” He turned back to you, “Is Fletcher yer real name?”
“Is Tacitus Kilgore yours?”
“Fair enough. But you know my real name.”
You returned his gaze. “Ain’t nothin’ to a name. Just another word people use to talk boutcha behind yer back.”
He nodded, “Ain’t quite thought of it that way.”
You nodded and a silence fell over the ride. The bench seat of the wagon was terribly short. Arthur’s thigh was pressed against yours and with every tremble of the wagon you could feel his body against yours. You kept your eyes forward and tried to ignore the static in your brain. As the sun fell behind the trees, the sky was filled with bright orange and red, the clouds were pink and lilac. As your eyes wandered, you caught Arthur rubbing a bald spot on his chin. “That a scar?”
Your question seemed to pull him from his trance like thoughts. “Huh?”
“On your chin there,” you pointed to it. “Is it a scar?”
“Oh, yeah.” He smoothed the hair around his chin line as he spoke. “Got thrown off a horse one day and got skidded up pretty bad. Took a nice little chunk outta my chin and sprained my wrist.” He nodded to the scar that ran across your right cheek. “What bout you?”
“Cougar, our near Strawberry back in ‘88. First time huntin’ a big cat.” You chuckled, “learned the hard way to never leave your back open, and always pack one of these.” You dug in your satchel and pulled out a mask. Arthur laughed, it wasn’t pretty that’s for sure. It was nothing more than a thick parchment with a crude face and strings that tied in the back. The artwork was terrible, but Arthur would never say it. “What in the hell is that gonna do?”
“Well,” You said as you tied the mask to the back of your head. “Met a man from India years back, he said their cats back home are even bigger than cougars. I didn’t really believe him, but he showed me a picture in a book. Looks like a mean son of a bitch. He said his people made masks to wear on the back of their heads, keeps ‘em from sneakin’ up behind ya.” You turned your head to show Arthur the mask, “don’t even have to be a good lookin’ one, as long as it has a face.”
Arthur was stunned, “and that really works?”
You nodded, “ain’t had one jump me from behind since.”
“Amazing” he whispered.
You nodded and put the mask away. “Learned a lotta tricks of the trade in my years. Makin’ money off the land can be just as deadly as makin’ money off the people.” You lifted your shirt to reveal a round scar above your stomach. “Got too close to a Whitetail Buck during mating season. Always thought I’d get pummeled by a bison or eaten by a bear before I got stabbed by a damn deer.”
Arthur averted his eyes from your skin quickly, even on your stomach you were riddled with scars. It reminded him of his own body, a body he always thought was grotesque and ugly because of his scars. So why didn’t he find your scars so horrible to look at? He didn’t want to find the answer. He coughed, “looks like we’re bout there.” He paused for a moment then brought his spare hand to his brow and squinted towards the horizon. “Hold on a minute, we may have company. You got that shotgun loaded?”
You gave it a solid pump. “Always.”
He kept his eyes on the horsemen ahead. The path went up a small hill and at the very top, two men were stationary on their horse; that’s always a suspicious sign. As the wagon approached, Arthur could clearly see the men were holding guns. “Yep,” he sighed. “Definitely got some company. Keep a level head, if they let us clear we-“
You had also examined the horsemen on the hill, you had also noticed the guns. Whether they were waiting for this wagon or not, their presence was not welcome by you. You stood and pulled the rifle from your back. Arthur’s eyes were trained on the men ahead and he was saying something, but you weren’t listening. You lined up your sights and landed a perfect headshot.
Arthur jumped in surprise to the loud pop of the gun. He watched as the first man fell. “What the hell are you doin’?”
As you lowered your gun to reload, the second man barreled down the trail, accompanied by six other men who appeared from the trees. You lined back up for another shot, “Ambushin’ them before they ambush us.”
“Shit!” Arthur cursed as your gun let out another loud shot. He began to pull out his pistol. You switched your rifle back out for the shot gun as the men approached firing range. “Just keep drivin’! I can take care a these guys you just make sure we get there in time!”
Arthur watched as your slugs blew back one body after another. He nodded and whipped the reins hard. Luckily for you, Arthur was a master driver; he maneuvered the wagon off the path and around trees and shrubs as you tore through the pursuers. Arthur hit a small rock and the bump almost threw you off the side, you let out a small yell before a big hand caught your wrist and pulled you back down on the bench seat. You nodded a quick thanks to Arthur before turning back and delivering the final blow. You kept an eye on your surroundings before finally relaxing and turning back to the front. “Okay, think we’re clear.”
Arthur nodded. “Just in time.” He pointed and just over the rolling hills of the Heartlands you saw the towering windmill of Emerald Ranch. Arthur pulled the wagon into the barn just as the sun was turning to a sliver over the horizon.
“Didn’t think you’d make it.” The man in the barn said as he handed Arthur a stack of cash.
He nodded, “wasn’t quite sure we would.”
“Have a good one!” He farm hand called as the two of you exited the barn.
Arthur silently counted the money and handed you half. He let out a sharp whistle. After a few minutes and a handful of whistles, a beautiful white Arabian came appeared from beyond the horizon. You turned to Arthur, “we not takin’ the wagon back to Trelawny?”
“Naw, it’s their wagon. I take it to load up and bring it back.”
“Shit, I left Banzo with Trelawny. There’s no way he’d hear me if I whistled for him.” You rubbed your neck and cursed again. “Guess I could rob the next unfortunate soul I see of their steed.”
Arthur mounted the horse, “ain’t no need for that,” he offered you his hand. “I can take ya back.”
You eyed the tiny horse suspiciously, Arthur looked huge on the little thing. “I dunno Arthur, that’s one tiny horse ya got there.”
He rolled his eyes, “not all of us ride mammoths, you know.”
You took his arm and he pulled you up, “What did you just call my horse?” You wrapped your arms around his waist and frowned. “Jesus Arthur, this is a child’s pony! Next real horse I see I’ll nab for ya.”
He chuckled, “I thank ya, but this ol’ girl is good enough for me.” He patted her neck. “Strong gal, this one is.” He paused. “Bet she could beat your ol boy in a race any day.”
You scoffed, “I’m sure she could, Garbanzo isn’t meant to be fast, he’s meant to be strong. He’s meant to be fearless.”
“You sure love that horse, don’t ya?”
You rolled your eyes, “course I do, don’t you?”
He smiled, “yeah, I do. They really are somethin’ aren’t they?”
You nodded. “Loyal, beautiful, strong creatures. Everything we’re supposed to be. A horse has never lied to me, or killed someone I love. A horse has never betrayed me or sold me out. A perfect companion.”
Arthur nodded, “couldn’t agree with you more.”
By the time you arrived back to Trelawny’s humble abode, the moon was high and the crickets and cicadas were singing. He was no longer in his usual spot on the porch and the lamp inside was turned off.
“Probably asleep.” Arthur whispered as he peeked inside. “Yep, definitely asleep.”
“Good thing we already got paid.”
He nodded. A strange quiet fell between the two of you, not awkward or uncomfortable but not familiar either. You rubbed your arm uncomfortably and cleared your throat. “I should uh, I should go.”
Arthur stuck his hands in his pockets and nodded. “Me too.”
You unhitched Garbanzo and as you passed Arthur you tipped your hat, he returned the gesture. It wasn’t a long ride back to your camp, when you arrived you crashed into your bedroll immediately. That night you dreamed of a familiar feeling you had long forgotten.

The Top 10 National Parks You Need to Visit This Fall
With the temperatures turned down, nature’s colors turned up, and the kids back in school, fall is the ultimate time to book a trip to national parks. You not only get fewer crowds and even better landscape views, but your trip becomes a little more spontaneous thanks to the unpredictable weather—whether it’s extra-cool nights or a freak snowstorm. The Best Adventure Races You Can Sign Up for Right Now ]] “Fall is my favorite season to visit national parks for a variety of reasons, depending on location,” says Heather Gyselman, REI adventure travel’s North American program manager. “In the west and midwest, the crowds are gone and there’s a hush in the air. You no longer have to jostle for a spot at favored overlooks, and it’s almost like the parks are letting out a deep long sigh. There are pops of colors here and there, which contrast beautifully against bright blue skies, shades of evergreen trees, and jagged peaks. And in the east, parks just show off. It’s nature’s firework show and a finale to the long hot summer.” To help you choose the location that serves up nature’s best scenes, we asked Gyselman and a few other experts their go-to spots for the season. Book a trip, plan your activity of choice, and enjoy the colorful display.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway If you’re chasing expansive autumn views, the Great Smoky Mountains have it covered in some of the country’s brightest hues. And this year, peak time to peep fall landscapes should actually extend from October to November, says Gyselman. She suggests making sure you take a drive over the Blue Ridge Parkway, where you can see a jaw-dropping line-up of leaves. You’ll also get your wildlife fix; there are herds of elk scattered throughout the grounds. ]] For guided backpacking and camping trips through this southern nature escape, check REI’s site for options. Leaders will take you to some of the season’s best viewing spots. Isaiah N Lilly / Shutterstock
Shenandoah National Park East Coasters, this one’s for you—and a fall go-to for Gyselman. Just 75 miles from Washington D.C. and fewer than 300 miles from New York City, you can easily drive to this park, making it easier on the wallet and ideal for a weekend getaway. Choose from more than 500 miles of hiking trails when you arrive—no matter where you stroll, you’ll spot a landscape splattered with orange, yellow, and red throughout the season. Old Rag, which you can access off Route 600, offers the most popular route in the park. (It can also be dangerous, so check out this page to get familiar with what you’re in for before you go.) You also have options to watch waterfalls and trek the Appalachian Trail—two must-dos for many hikers.Scott Wurzel / Shutterstock
]]Yosemite National Park All your friends might have gone to Cali to catch Yosemite in summer, but if you want the inside scoop, fall reaps even more adventurous rewards without the crowds and the intense sun and temperatures. Gyselman suggests hiking around the valley or down into the valley so you can see patches of colors mixed among evergreen trees. Try the Yosemite Valley Loop Trail, an 11.5-mile route, or a quicker jaunt on the Sentinel and Cook’s Meadow Loop that spans 2.25 miles. If you’re looking to camp out for the night (who doesn’t want to wake up to a view of Half Dome or El Capitan come morning?), check whether you need a reservation. And don’t forget extra layers because the nights can get pretty chilly.Bill45 / Shutterstock
]]Mount Rainier An active volcano rising more than 14,000 feet above sea level, this western destination rings in as a must-see for many reasons. “Each time I travel through Rainier in the fall, the park reminds me of what I’d imagine a fairytale land to look like—it’s absolutely gorgeous,” Gyselman says. Her top pick for an area to visit is one appropriately named Paradise, where she suggests checking out the lower part of the Skyline Trail up to Myrtle Falls and the Golden Gate Trail. You’ll catch a breathtaking display of Mount Rainier and Tatoosh Range. On another morning, Gyselman says to opt for an easy walk through the Grove of Patriarchs, surrounded by old evergreens and maple trees. Zion National Park The Observation Point hike gets the rep as the most iconic route in the park for a reason: You see down into the valley with an amazing contrast of colors from the copper sandstone, blue skies, and yellow, orange, and red trees, Gyselman says. You also get a nice mix of cool, but not too cold, temperatures.]]Andy Austin, a photographer and guide for Austin Adventures, suggests watching the sunset from the Canyon Junction Bridge, which crosses over the Virgin River. If you’re up early, aim to spot the sunrise at the Towers of the Virgins, located behind the museum. Because it’s at a lower altitude than other parks, autumn also tends to hit Zion a little later in the year, around November—in other words, you still have time to get there and see the changing leaves.Julius L. Zahn / Shutterstock
Glacier National Park Austin calls out Glacier for a few next-level viewing areas, including Bowman Lake. It features a background painted with larch trees—the ones that turn a bright yellow come fall and offer a pretty breathtaking landscape against the glassy water. Another area to check out: Many Glacier, swept with Aspen trees and snow peaks. It also houses two of the most popular hikes in the park: Grinnell Glacier Trail and Iceberg Lake Trail. According to the National Park Service, you could take a different route every day for a week in Many Glacier and still not cover the entire area. That means there’s plenty of room to explore, especially with a shuttle going right from Glacier National Park Lodge to Many Glacier.Expect erratic weather in Glacier this season, which is one reason the crowds typically clear out. It already got two big snowstorms this year, so you’ll want to check the forecast before packing.EB Adventure Photography / Shutterstock]]
Yellowstone National Park Typically teeming with wildlife, you’re likely to see bison throughout most parts of Yellowstone, as well as elk, bears, wolves, antelope, deer, and big-horn sheep. “Elk bugling in Yellowstone is surreal—you’ll never hear anything like it and the noise travels for miles and miles,” says Dan Austin, founder of Austin Adventures. If you want to watch the elk, Andy Austin suggests Mammoth Hot Springs. The landscape here also offers its own outstanding view, courtesy of the limestone formations and thermal pools (a unique staple of Yellowstone).Want to catch the fall colors? Andy suggests heading to the Lamar River in Lamar Valley. To see the park from a different point of view, try a horseback ride, a popular activity in Yellowstone. Many lodges and stores in the park close come mid-October, so make sure you plan where you want to go and what you need to make it happen before you visit.Harry Beugelink / Shutterstock ]]
Grand Teton National Park If you love the outdoors for its snowy, insanely picturesque mountain ranges, put Grand Teton on your must-visit list right now. Austin suggests waking up early to catch the sunrise at Schwabacher Landing, where it reflects over the Snake River, an Instagrammer's dream. Hit the hiking trail after or set out to raft on the river before it freezes over. You have easy access to both at the landing. If you prefer pedaling to strolling, Grand Teton has plenty of options for getting your cycling fix satisfied. Leave from Jackson and a paved pathway leads you to Antelopes Flats Road. You can spin past beautiful Aspen groves through Moran Junction (another of Andy’s favorite areas), complete with a grand view of the Grand Teton Mountains.Tom Tietz / Shutterstock
]]Bryce Canyon National Park Red rocks and hoodoos (or tall, irregular spires of rock) fill this western park, giving you a new, fantastic view every time you turn around. Fall offers the perfect time to check out Scenic Byway 12, a 37-mile round-trip drive that cuts through the limestone amphitheaters of the park. You can also access portions of the 50 miles of hiking trails Bryce Canyon has to offer from this road. One of the top-rated paths to hike on All Trails is the Navajo Loop and Queen’s Garden Trail, stretching 2.6 miles in a loop with amazing panoramas of the park. To hike longer and climb higher, reviewers also love the Fairyland Loop Trail, spanning 7.4 miles and reaching more than 1,500 feet as it stretches along the rim and down into the canyon. Just beware, it can get challenging.Natali Glado / Shutterstock
Death Valley National Park While the temperatures spike well over 100 degrees in the summer at this park, which straddles two states, autumn brings cooler, much more comfortable temperatures. A stand-out spot according to Tyler Drake, founder of The Outbound Collective, the land sits below sea level. Because of its location, you get a big blend of landscapes from sand dunes and rock formations to occasional greenery and this colorful view at Artist’s Drive.]]Drake suggests checking out the panoramic views at Zabriskie Point. The out-and-back trail spans just under a half mile, so it’s doable for any level and offers an ideal place to watch the sunrise or set, according to All Trails.VIKVAD / Shutterstock Read the full article

Hi Michael,
I have recently stumbled onto your site and have been enjoying it very much. My husband and I are planning a trip to Yellowstone in a few weeks. We’d like to take in a few short hikes. We are both in our late 60s and in decent shape. We spent a few days in Arches this spring and took a few five-mile hikes through the park and enjoyed it thoroughly. What hike could you recommend for us? We are thinking about limiting our hikes to fives miles because of the change in elevation/terrain and weather conditions we may encounter there.
Thank you.

Hi Jeanne,
Thanks for writing and finding The Big Outside. You are heading to a fantastic park for short walks and hikes any time of year, although I think autumn is ideal because of good weather and fewer people; some of the photos in this story were shot on an October trip I took.
You should read my “Ultimate Family Tour of Yellowstone” for ideas on the best spots to visit and take very short walks while driving through the park, including the Midway Geyser Basin and America’s largest hot spring, Grand Prismatic.
Grand Prismatic Spring, Midway Geyser Basin, Yellowstone.
As for hikes of five miles and under, here are the ones I’d suggest, listed in no particular order.
Bunsen Peak
The summit of 8,564-foot Bunsen Peak, about five miles south of Mammoth Hot Springs, overlooks a huge swath of the park, from the Gallatin Range to the west, across the high plateau that comprises much of Yellowstone, to the Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains. The round-trip hike on the Bunsen Peak Trail is four miles.
Lamar River Valley
The Lamar River Valley in the park’s northeast corner is a great area for seeing wildlife like bison and elk and occasionally wolves. Hike out and back as far as you want on the Lamar River Trail, which is pretty flat and passes through open terrain with big views.

View from near the summit of 10,243-foot Mount Washburn.
Mount Washburn
Mount Washburn is 6.2 miles out-and-back from Dunraven Pass on the Grand Loop Road; there’s a shorter, five-mile out-and-back to the summit from a trailhead on a dirt road just north of Washburn, that ascends more than 1,700 feet. The views from 10,243-foot Washburn take in the Tetons, Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains, and the Madison Range. The Indian paintbrush, lupine, and other wildflowers bloom in late July and early August. Hike it in early morning or evening for a good chance of seeing bighorn sheep.
View of Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River from Lookout Point, North Rim Trail.
North Rim Trail, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The North Rim Trail along the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River (lead photo at top of story) is arguably the park’s most scenic walk, with constant views into the deep canyon, including Lower Yellowstone Falls. (In fact, I put it on my list of the best national park dayhikes in the country.) Various points of road access allow you to choose a hiking distance, but the entire trail is fairly flat and under four miles. You can also walk across a bridge past Upper Yellowstone Falls to reach the south rim and make it a longer hike by following the South Rim Trail for the views from the other side.
Gear up right for hikes in Yellowstone. See my reviews of the best hiking shoes and the 7 best daypacks.
Uncle Tom’s Trail, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The Uncle Tom’s Trail on the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River is short—it only descends about 500 feet—but the metal stairs you follow down it lead to a spectacular viewpoint near the base of Lower Yellowstone Falls.
Fairy Falls
The Fairy Falls Trail, in the Midway Geyser Basin, leads to one of the park’s nicest waterfalls, 197-foot Fairy Falls, passing views of the park’s biggest and most colorful geyser, Grand Prismatic Geyser. There are a couple ways to get there, both fairly flat. The shorter route, five miles round-trip, begins a mile south of Midway Geyser Basin, where you cross a steel bridge. The longer route of eight miles round-trip begins at the parking area at the end of Fountain Flat Drive. From the falls, you can continue 0.6 mile one-way to Spray and Imperial geysers, and then double back.
Stay dry and happy. See my reviews of “The 5 Best Rain Jackets For the Backcountry.”
Old Faithful, Upper Geyser Basin.
Upper Geyser Basin
The Upper Geyser Basin is home to the world’s largest concentration of geysers, hundreds of them, including Old Faithful. You can walk the almost flat trail and boardwalk for several miles from Geyser Hill to Biscuit Basin and Black Sand Basin, or take a shorter tour. Get a map and guide to the Upper Geyser Basin and take time to explore it. You don’t want to miss this area.

Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone.
Mammoth Hot Springs
Mammoth Hot Springs, multi-hued travertine terraces formed by thermal waters rising through limestone, is unquestionably one of the most inspiring areas of the park. Water constantly pools and trickles down the terraces and steam billows from them. Boardwalks weave through the lower terraces and a one-way loop road through the upper terraces. Plan to explore this area for an hour or more of leisurely walking for the dramatic light of early morning.
Lone Star Geyser
The Lone Star Geyser Trail, which begins near Kepler Cascades, just south of Old Faithful, is an almost five-mile round-trip hike to Lone Star Geyser, which is several feet tall and erupts about every three hours. Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds and give yourself time to sit and wait for the geyser to blow.
Read about how climate change is affecting Yellowstone and other parks in my book Before They’re Gone—A Family’s Year-Long Quest to Explore America’s Most Endangered National Parks.
Along the Blacktail Deer Creek Trail, Yellowstone National Park.
Blacktail Deer Creek Trail
The Blacktail Deer Creek Trail, which begins about 6.7 miles east of Mammoth on the Grand Loop Road, winds north across gently rolling grasslands and meadows with long views of partly forested hills and a good chance of seeing a bison herd. The trail drops more than 1,000 feet in 3.7 miles to the Black Canyon of the Yellowstone River, where, for a longer outing, you can hike either upriver or downriver along a trail through conifer forest, with views of the cliffs rising above the meandering river. But the first few miles of the Blacktail Deer Creek Trail are fairly easy, before it begins descending more steeply into the canyon, and you can turn back at any point.
