youtube
the name Andrew Sean Greer popped up in atatwe twice so i searched he and DH's name together and found this youtube video from 15 years ago. anyway, love listening to DH talk about sanfran
--
(on living in San Fran)
DH: same thing that's attractive about living here is the same thing that's attractive about [???] fiction. it's a city where there's everything going on, has its on rich history and also its own very strong amnesia about history, and that it's a city so many people come to.
([??] i think it sounded that he said science fiction but i feel like im not sure if that fits with the context)
__
DH: I sometimes feel like I'm an uptight San Francisco novelist, and there are not very many of us. They're more kind of wild and free ... Mark Twain kind of beat. Noir. All that stuff that's kind of unshackled and crazy.
ASG: Well we're here having a quarter of a whiskey ...
DH: Yes! That's right
ASG: ... in the afternoon
DH: a sip of [??] whiskey before five. What's wilder than that?
(i'm guessing [??] is brand name but i couldn't hear it clearly)

but the water's rising (quicker than light and sound)
(title from "notos" by the oh hellos!)
Phee has been out of quarantine for a month and a half when she realizes Earth is not so different from Lumeria.
The Rift is strange in a thousand ways — the ways people dress, the ways they talk, the new language all of them know that Phee has been slowly struggling to learn with the help (if you can call it that) of the human, Charlie, who’s been talking to her since day one. But she’s most of all confused by the way it looks.
Phee's old city was surrounded by water on all sides. There were days when it was a little darker than usual or a little more turbulent as the city’s movement shifted, but there was no such thing as weather. Now that she’s in the Rift, she’s gotten used to the main ones. There are the warm bright days that make her want to spend every hour outside. There are the humid, foggy ones that distract her from class every fifteen seconds by the weight of the water in her mind giving her headaches. There are even the beautiful days Charlie calls “glow-ups,” where glittering lights rise from the ground and leave Phee mesmerized. (She’s only ever seen one of them, but she remembers every detail.) If she’s being honest, it’s one thing she likes better about Earth than Lumeria, not that she’d ever admit it to anyone back home. Not that she has any way of admitting it.
The day starts normally. Phee wakes up to the heavy, static-y feeling of water droplets all around her and realizes it’s going to be another foggy day. Next to her, Waverly checks the weather forecast and mutters “Ugh, looks like rain today,” then bounces off to breakfast before Phee can ask her what the new word means. Phee picks up Lu, makes a note to look the word up later (in English, which she’s very proud of), and sets off to breakfast herself.
She makes it through the school day in one piece, despite her powers distracting her all day. She barely understands a word of most of her classes, but when she looks up from her paper in science class with a frustrated expression, she sees Charlie giving her an equally confused look and smiles. Maybe she and the other humans aren’t so different after all.
It's when she leaves Riftside High at the end of the day and goes to sit outside with Charlie that she realizes something is very strange. The weather has gotten hotter and more humid all day, and Phee can barely stand to be outside in it. That's not the strangest part, though. Clouds have gathered in the sky above her. Phee’s seen clouds before, of course, but these don’t look the same. They look dark and angry, blocking out the sun. The water around her gets heavier and heavier. Phee remembers this. “Charlie, we should go inside,” she says.
“Nah, it’s all good. I like the rain," Charlie responds, flopping down on her back in the grass with her face turned towards the sky. “Besides, it’s been so hot all day. It’ll feel so nice.”
That reminds Phee. “Charlie, what does rain mean?”
“You’ve been here for almost two months, and nobody’s taught you the word rain?”
“No. What's rain?”
“Rain is like-“ She’s interrupted by a few sudden drops of water falling from the sky. Phee reaches up distractedly, feeling them fall onto her skin. That's not normal. That cannot be normal. Water does not fall onto people. Is Earth a water planet too and nobody’s told her? Charlie isn’t panicking, though, so Phee tries to calm her nerves as she lies down on the grass next to her.
That's a mistake.
The heavens suddenly open up all at once, drenching both Phee and Charlie. “This is fine,” Charlie says. Phee, unconvinced, immediately throws up a barrier over her and Charlie, protecting them both from the rain. Charlie looks up and sees it. “Oh, this is nice, actually. I forgot you could do this.”
“But this is okay, right? All of this is okay?”
“Oh, yeah. This is what rain means. Water falling from the sky.”
“Oh.” Phee breathes a sigh of relief. “I thought it was dangerous or something.”
At that moment, the loudest boom Phee’s heard on Earth echoes across the school. A few students around them jump and look up at the sky. Phee screams and covers her ears, distracting her from the water barrier. All the water that’s collected on it immediately falls onto them. Charlie, now fully soaked, looks at Phee with an exasperated expression, then stops as she realizes how distressed her alien friend seems. “Phee, this is all-“
A loud, piercing alarm sounds across the field. “Yeah, they’re right, we should go in now,” Charlie says, grabbing Phee's arm to help her up. As Phee stands, though, Charlie realizes just how panicked she looks. Her eyes are glowing bright pink, and she’s crying. In her terrified state, she can barely form sentences at all, let alone in English, but she’s trying. “No! What's going on? We have to leave! We’re not safe!”
“Phee, I swear we’re fine,” Charlie says, glaring at a group of other students who are now looking at Phee with confused and judgmental stares. “This is normal.”
“This is not normal! We have to go!” Phee yells, crying harder. A flash of white light illuminates the sky, followed almost immediately by another crash. Her body has stopped moving by now, and she isn’t sure if her mind is still on Earth, or if it’s back on Lumeria, watching her whole life fall apart. Water had poured onto her then, too. Buildings had crashed apart, electricity flickering on and off. And that had all ended in tragedy. She's going to watch two planets die. Crive, she’s probably going to die with it. She tries to take another step, but she slips on the wet grass and falls, scraping both knees. They hurt, and her ears hurt, and all she can think of is all the water around her. Her planet is dying again. How could this happen twice?
“Phee, get up. Come on. We’re both getting soaked," Charlie says impatiently. She's clearly concerned about Phee, but she has no idea what’s going on or how to help her. “It's okay. This is literally just a thunderstorm-“
It occurs to her. “You’ve never seen a thunderstorm before.”
Phee shakes her head. Charlie almost laughs. “Oh, wow. Yeah, this must be a lot. Come inside, and I'll tell you what’s going on.”
A teacher notices them as they walk towards the doors. “Girls, why are you still outside? It’s not safe for you two to still be out here.”
Phee sees Charlie wince just a bit. She assumes it’s out of fear. (Charlie barely understands why she feels so strange. Maybe it’s because he automatically assumed they were girls. Which is weird, because they are. Is Phee? Does Phee even know gender? She’ll have to ask.) Either way, this worries Phee, who grabs Charlie's hand and squeezes it. “We’re just coming inside now,” Charlie explains. “Phee’s never seen a thunderstorm before.”
“Oh,” the teacher says with an expression that makes it very clear he’s only now realized that Phee is the new alien everyone’s been talking about. Phee and Charlie hurry inside and down the hallway before he can ask any more questions.
They sit down on beanbag chairs in the library, where Charlie sees Mara at a nearby table with a group of mages. Mara gives Charlie a quizzical expression, seeing the alien panicking next to her. Charlie shoots back a brief text of i’ll explain later, then turns back to Phee. “Okay. So. This is a thunderstorm. It's like rain, but a lot bigger. Sometimes it causes lightning, which is like electricity from the sky. There are electric elementals, I think. You might know some. It's like them. And then the lightning makes those noises, which are called thunder. It doesn’t happen super often, but it does happen sometimes.”
“It’s normal?” Phee asks, sighing in relief. “Earth just does that? Your planet is weird.”
“Yeah, it is,” Charlie says. “What did you even think was happening?”
“Um.” Phee doesn’t want to get into any of that right now. “I thought that maybe we were in trouble. There was an alarm…”
“Oh, that thing. That's the lightning alarm. It goes off to make sure no one’s outside to get struck by lightning. Because that stuff is actually dangerous. It’s a really annoying sound, though. You might want to get used to it.”
“Okay.” Phee takes a deep breath, absorbing everything, then takes out her notebook and writes a page of bulletpoints detailing what Charlie just said. She finishes out the page with ‘does not mean Earth is dying,’ then shuts the notebook and turns back to Charlie. “I have a lot to learn about your planet.”
“I have a lot to teach you,” Charlie says.
Charlie pulls out her phone and scrolls through her texts while Phee turns to gaze out the window, jumping slightly every time she sees lightning or hears thunder. Maybe she’s just a water elemental, but it’s actually a little bit beautiful.
Maybe someday, she’s going to love it.

Daniel Villarreal at LGBTQ Nation:
Despite passing in the Senate earlier this week, the Kid’s Online Safety Act (KOSA) is reportedly dead in the U.S. House after progressives, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), worried that it would possible censor LGBTQ+ content. Some Republicans also opposed the bill, stating that it would violate free speech protections for social media platforms and their users. KOSA would have mandated that social media companies take measures to prevent recommending any content that promotes mental health disorders (like eating disorders, drug use, self-harm, sexual abuse, and bullying) unless minors specifically search for such content. Opponents worried that Republican attorneys general who see LGBTQ+ identities as harmful forms of mental illness would use KOSA’s provisions to censor queer web content and prosecute platforms that provide access to it.
“KOSA was a poorly written bill that would have made kids less safe,” said one of the bill’s most vocal opponents, Evan Greer, director of Fight for the Future, a nonprofit that protects human rights in the digital age. “It’s good that this unconstitutional censorship bill is dead for now, but I am not breathing a sigh of relief.” [...] Many other groups opposed the bill, including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, the LGBT Technology Partnership, as well as LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations in six states. While KOSA passed in the Senate earlier this week in a 93-1 vote, three senators voted against the bills: Ron Wyden (D-OR), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Rand Paul (R-KY) — all three made statements explaining why.
Good news: KOSA stopped in the House… for now.
