Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) with her two Eldest Sons
Artist: Allan Ramsay (Scottish, 1713-1784)
Date: c. 1764-1769
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Royal Collection Trust, London, United Kingdom
Description
This is the closest any British artist gets to the elegance, subtlety and precision of French portraiture and the best candidate to represent portrait painting in the Age of Enlightenment. The sitter is shown seated at an English spinnet (which may be compared with one at the Royal College of Museum of c. 1750 made by John Hitchcock); on the instrument is a work-box and a copy of John Locke’s 'Some Thoughts Concerning Education' (1693); leaning against it is a portfolio of drawings. The Queen holds Prince Frederick, later Duke of York (1763-1827); at her knee stands Prince George, Prince of Wales (later George IV, 1762-1830), with a bow and behind him a drum.

Just wondering a bit about Suzy! What's your lore for her? :3
Tysm for asking, I’ve been wanting to draw more of Suzy and this is the perfect opportunity!
Firstly, horses are her passion right next to hair care. She’s read all the training books and seen all the “horse girl” movies, with very detailed opinions on each film’s practicality and emotional impact. She is also very involved with the racing community; betting on horse races is a hobby she shares with her brother Chad, and she more often than not wins because she pays close attention to those equine athletes. (Also it gives her the opportunity to dress up for derbies)
But she also has a horse companion of her own!
Meet Rapunzel! Suzy has multiple horses throughout her lifetime, but this one is her favorite. A pony she trained herself from foalhood, Rapunzel is very in sync with Suzy, a dainty and refined creature with luscious locks just like her. Here they are riding in style in their coordinated hats!
Speaking of hats, Suzy has a full collection!
She’s got a hat for pretty much every occasion you can think of. This isn’t even the full collection; see more on her Pinterest board here! Hats are a way for Suzy to express herself and her style since her body is concealed by hair that she refuses to cut. Between her luscious locks and her impeccable wardrobe, she gets a lot of compliments!
I like to think Eep has her own collection of hair bows, some that coordinate with Suzy’s hats. The two of them share a wardrobe space that is literally just a “hats and bows closet” (like the one in My Little Pony).
Also, Suzy loves dressing up for Halloween! She always puts her own stylish twist to whatever character she’s playing that year. While she shines on her own, she also loves coordinated costumes, but doesn’t always have anyone who’s willing to go with her. Eep doesn’t like Halloween at all, and her other siblings are either doing couples’ costumes with their partners or dressing in an aesthetic that horrifically clashes with hers. But at least she has her little niece Royal to match her vibe! She can always count on her to slay for whatever occasion requires a fabulous duo.

Women's Rococo Fashion: Robe à l'anglaise
Women with coquettish airs were imposing in robes à la française and robes à l'anglaise throughout the period between 1720 and 1780.
Robe à l'anglaise • British • c. 1747; altered 1770s • Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute
Believed to have been worn as a wedding dress in 1747, this gown displays the exquisite patterning of English dress silks of the period, with delicate flowers and asymmetrical cartouches disposed in a graceful meander across an open ground. The ivory silk faille is brocaded with three types of silver thread, which add rich texture to the lively pattern. Sumptuous textiles such as this one signified wealth and were admired for the brilliant effects of light reflecting off their surfaces. The flat silver strip brocaded at the centers of the flower blossoms creates a coruscating effect, while the crinkled silver frisé of the stems produces a more restrained luster. Gowns of white and silver (both colors symbolizing purity) were fashionable in the mid-1700s among aristocratic and wealthy brides. Although altered in the 1770s, the dress remains a superb example of the lasting appeal of the era’s fine silks.
– Metropolitan Museum of Art
Allan Ramsay (British/English, 1713–1784) • Portrait of Queen Charlotte • c. 1762 • Royal Collection

Robert Hooke and the early Fellows of the Royal Society, argued that nature must be ‘put to the torture’, and made to yield its secrets to the astute investigator. As the judicial inquisitor needed his special tools of assault and persuasion to make his victim speak, so the scientific experimentalist needed his, for the laboratory—which included the newly-invented telescope, microscope, airpump, thermometer and many other instruments which became Hooke’s ‘artificial organs’ that refined the perceptions—was the torture chamber wherein long-secretive nature would be cross-examined, revealing one truth after another until the whole ‘truth’ of nature was brought into the light.
Hello, yes
This is the hottest thing I've ever read.

Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz
Artist: Workshop of Allan Ramsay (1713–1784)
Genre: Portrait
Date: Between 1761 and 1762
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: National Portrait Gallery, London, England
Queen Charlotte; Princess Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, 1744 - 1818. Queen of George III
Charlotte married George, Prince of Wales, in September 1761. A fortnight later they were crowned at Westminster Abbey and their coronation portraits commissioned from Ramsay, who had recently succeeded John Shackleton as Principle Painter in Ordinary. Charlotte is seen in a similar setting to her husband, with classical columns and rich drapery. In coronation robes of gold and ermine to match George, she gestures towards the crown. This version is by Ramsay’s studio – the replication of state portraits for heads of state, colonial governors, ambassadors etc, was a common occurrence during this time. There are subtle differences between the copies. Ramsay’s earliest version shows Charlotte wearing a pearl necklace, whereas later portraits, such as this, feature a gem encrusted necklace.

super late post. its 11:56 pm right now.
today was fun. I ate good and had a relaxed time.
I finished up some important work for my last class so I just have to take the final tomorrow. I hope that goes well. im not prepared at all but since the class is at home and its open note I dont need to worry too hard.
I watched the crown today. im on season 5. just constant reminders to why the royal house sucks tremendously. theyre all terrible people. except for Diana. as far as I know. I wish she was here.
im now watching smiling friends which I wish I wouldve watched sooner because it is making me laugh so good. so hard? I dont know. its funny.
after this I might watch some more of one tree hill and then scroll through Pinterest.
pinterest is specifically for looking at pretty emo boys and girls and wishing I knew them personally. or for like henna prints and room decor. but thats it.
god I wish mikey way was real. he would play dress to impress and make fun of the little kids on Roblox.
when the clock ticks to midnight, the delusions start. that means its nearly time for bed.

'Letter to my Younger Self' - a third brief Royal Literary Fund talk
As a Royal Literary Fund Fellow based at The British Library in London (though working on-line for the most part), I was asked way back in May 2020 (feels like a different world) to write and record three brief talks. One of these was on ‘Writing and Technology’ which I posted (as text and audio file) on this blog a few months ago. Another commision was to be titled ‘How I Write’ – not an easy…

It kind of just occurred to me how much the queer community is winning this summer. We had Nimona. We had Barbie (ace Barbie, Allan, just queer vibes all around). We had Good Omens season 2. We had Heartstopper season 2. We're getting High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4 and Red White and Royal Blue two days apart from each other. We even have The Witcher finally delivering with Jaskier (or at least it did in the first part, haven't watched part 2 yet).
I don't know where I was going with this. I'm just happy about it.
#lgbt#barbie#nimona#good omens#heartstopper#rwarb#hsmtmts#and for all the people in the tags going “why the hell is there a show called high school musical the musical the series?”#allow me to explain: the show is about a group of theater kids putting on the stage version of HSM (at least in season 1)#therefore: it's High School Musical: The Musical...but it's also made in the mocumentary format...hence “the series”#it's ridiculous and hilarious but we've all embraced it
