ART IN NOTES/REBLOGS NOW!!!!
Tgcf/MDZS crossover au where after loosing his core WWX technically counts as dead and is able to cultivate the same way a ghost can, essentially making him a ghost possessing a very compatible body.
He’s not a demonic cultivator, he’s just a ghost.
Additionally, the burial mounds are actually the semi-active “remains” of mount tonglu, so when he dies there he’s essentially thrown straight into the kiln, and the only reason WWX is able to get out within 8 years is bc he spent 4 years there as a child, and an additional 2 with the Wen remnants.
Accidental Ghost King Acquisition.
WWX spends the next 3 years in Yiling fucking around with his ghost Wens, rescues Wen Ning with help from Wen Qing, helping the small town in Yiling, and generally being the insane genius inventor he always should have been.
He makes silver bells and enchanted ornaments for Yiling’s people deals with rogue ghosts, befriends his shishu Xiao Xingchen, helps spirits move on. Silver Song Guiding Graves becomes a very welcome guardian for Yiling.
Xie Lian, concerned about the supposed new ghost king, is assigned to find it. Thus leads Xie Lian and Hua Cheng meeting Wei Ying.
Eventually, Mo Xuanyu tries to summon the Yiling Patriarch in exchange for his own soul, but.. he just gets Wei Ying hunched over on the ground with noodles coming out of his mouth. He was having dinner with his friends when he got summoned by this twink okay?
He basically becomes Mo Xuanyu’s Bodyguard for the next 9 months cause he sees Xuanyu as pathetic but in like a wet cat sort of way, as he, Lan Zhan, Xuanyu, and a group of 15 year olds get together to solve a murder.

The funniest “Jin Ling damsel in distress moment” is actually in the donghua on dafan mountain when Lan Jingyi kicks Jin Ling into the cave with so much force (infamous Lan Clan hamstrings?) that he just disappears??? I mean logically, he probably just fell on his face then got up and was like “screw this loser” and started exploring the cave for the heck of it but it’s so much funnier to imagine LJY kicking him so hard that he just rolled through the entire cave system for like 5 minutes straight until he crashed into the dancing goddess statue

Do we talk about the tragedy of Wen Ning enough? I think not.
From a young age, Wen Ning's support has come from Wen Qing, she parentified herself out of necessity and love for Wen Ning. Watching your older sibling beat out their childishness and innocence, for your sake, that is a special type of torture.
Now Wen Ning has to grow up watching Wen Qing shoulder the weight of leading the branch clan and bearing Wen Ruohan's attention.
And there's nothing Wen Ning can do.
Fast-forward to Post-Sunshot Campaign, Wen Ning and Wen Qing are separated. Can you image the fear that Wen Ning lived in for his sister's life? She was Wen Ruohan's doctor. Because of Wen Qing's hands he lived long enough to cull the lives of thousands for his own greed.
He's in a labour camp, surrounded by the most vulnerable members of his clan, watching as dozens are snuffed out for senseless cruelty in the name of 'justice'.
He suffers under that same cruelty, but knowing the virtuous and selfless nature of Wen Ning his spirit was definitely more devastated by the suffering of his family and the unknown fate of his sister.
Repeatedly beaten and abused, Wen Ning spends heaven knows how long there, watching his family dwindle down from hundreds to dozens.
And finally, he joins them. He died for nothing. He died not knowing if Wen Qing was even alive.
That's not even bringing up watching Wei Wuxian sacrifice so much for you, your family.
Just think about how that kind of experience would eternally and deeply wound someone as kind as Wen Ning.
And finally, after fighting and living finally all your family is slaughtered. Down to the last child. Wen Qing is burned to ashes.
I don't think I'll be able to cover his existence as a sentient fierce corpse, but think for yourself, the blessing, the curse that is such a 'life'.
The blessing of being able to live a few more years with your family, yet the curse of being unable to join them in death.
And while he might have trusted Wei Wuxian with control of his body, there is always the possibility someone like Xue Yang could come and force him into thrall.
Yes, the tragedy of Wen Ning.

The burial mounds, a place of mystery, the place of the dead, cannot be comprehended by humans. It is a place warped by time and resentful energy and the intentions of those who inhabit it and who knows what else. It is sentient and has a strong will of its own. It’s said that no one can leave the Burial Mounds, and that is true as much as it’s not. The burial mounds keeps what is theirs; protects what is theirs. No one can escape from the Burial Mounds bc more often than not, once you enter, the Burial Mounds see you as theirs. It does not take well to people hurting and taking what is theirs. (And, maybe this is why a certain demonic cultivator was able to survive and leave that place. Maybe he understood this will and resentment bc he too would do anything to protect those he loves. For him as well, once he considers someone family, they are family. And nothing will change that. No matter what happens, his family is his family, and those under his protection are fully under his protection. They can see a kindred spirit in each other, and so the Burial Mounds let him go, knowing that he will always carry part of the Burial Mounds with him. The souls in his sleeves and the resentful energy he welcomes into his body. The boon that the Burial Mounds grants him.)
It is for these reasons that WWX knows to bring the Wen remnants there. Not only does he know he can defend them if needed in that place teeming with resentment, he knows the Burial Mounds themselves will protect them. It protects its own, and the Burial Mounds knows these people that WWX brought are his, so they are its. It’s as simple as that. And, the Burial Mounds likes it. It likes having these people here, milling about and carving a life on it. It likes how they turns its soil from barren to fruitful. It likes how they are happy and content. It likes being their home and haven. It will do anything to protect them.
When the first siege comes, the Burial Mounds try to protect what is theirs. These people who have made a home on it. But, they are all grieving deeply, and it’s beautiful child, the first to even understand them and want to make peace with them instead of destroying them, is breaking apart. He is breaking apart with the weight of someone who could not protect that which is most precious to him. And he has been breaking with this weight for months now, every day chipping another piece of himself away, every day pulling further and further into himself, every day driving him just a little more insane. The Burial Mounds have no problem with madness. They will still embrace him fully and without question, but it pains them to see him like this. They are all breaking under the pressure of what the world outside its borders do. This is no longer their haven, but now their place of imminent doom. It is only a matter of time until the cultivators attack. The Burial Mounds fights back as it always does to protect those that are its. But, some of these living cultivators attacking are family of WWX and it cannot attack family. And, it knows that even should he wipe all these harmful intruders out, that will not stop more from coming, and more after that. The Burial Mounds would fight every wave they send, but that is not the issue. The issue is that its people are grieving and breaking. The issue is that it cannot do anything to fix that and every attack will break their spirits just that much more.
So instead, the Burial Mounds decide to change it. As the cultivators pour in, the Burial Mounds pulls its energy from defending and into charging its intention.  Some of its people get cut down, but that is fine, it will still work, they do not have to be alive. Just as WWX is about to destroy the Stygian Tiger Amulet (oh, and look at their brave boy, but don’t do that, my child, it will tear you apart) a large pulse of resentful energy ripples out over the battlefield, shaking the ground and seeping into all that is theirs. The air and ground starts to ripple, unstable and warping like swirls of marble, until none can stay standing in this odd happening, toppling over, nauseous from the swirling. Those that are theirs are sucked into the soil, deep into its power, and it embraces them into its depths.
Then—
They open their eyes.
WWX is seven, on the streets of Yiling, and turns his head to the Burial Mounds so close by, calling to him. Come home, my child, it whispers. Come to me; I will protect you.
Wen Ning is eight and Wen Qing 14. They also look in the direction of Yiling—of the Burial Mounds. They too hear the call. There are gasps rippling around their home, and people bursting through doors, embracing each other, crying in joy. Eyes flick around at everyone. They know. All those that were on the Burial Mounds, as well as Wen Qing and Wen Ning remember. They know what Wen Ruohan is planning. They also know what will happen to their real family.
They go to Yiling. Just a few at first. They lost many people in their branch before they were saved by WWX, and those people are more than hesitant to go to that cursed place. Those that remember can’t simply leave them to their fates again. So, some go, while some stay. They will convince the rest later. When they arrive at the base of the Burial Mounds, there is already a large collapse in the wall surrounding it looking to be made recently. The paths open up for them as they start their ascent. The path is just as they remember, the corpses and spirits howling, but leaving them be. They know they are already part of them. Granny Wen and Wen Qing are at the front of the group, leading the way. Wen Qing wishes her brother was there, but that was not something their parents would budge on. They barely let her go, and only because Granny was insisting as well and promised to look after her.
They reach the clearing where their homes were, and there they are. Their little shacks that barely stay standing. The patches of land they’d tilled and toiled over. And there, perched on a tree stump by the side of the road is a boy, even smaller than A-Ning, covered in dirt and grime that can’t all be from the Burial Mounds, spinning a black, bamboo dizi in his tiny hands. He watches them with shining eyes and a large smile they’d know anywhere breaks out on his face, then—
He laughs. The boy laughs loud and clear and bright as he topples off the stump in his joy. Many of them join in the laughter as well. Amazed and in disbelief. Wen Qing, granny, and a few others rush over to the little Wei Wuxian and pull him into a crushing embrace. The laughter soon turns to wracking sobs as they all cling to each other and let it all sink in.
They are alive. They are together.
And, they will make sure it stays that way.
The Burial Mounds hum around them, welcoming them home.
#now they just need to convince the rest of the dafan wen to move into the burial mounds#and stop a war#but that's secondary to keeping their family safe and together#the burial mounds picked up on lwj and wwx's conection#so it brought him back too#one minuet he's lying in bed his back burning from the discipline whip#the next he's eight years old sitting in class at the cloud recesses perfectly fine and uninjured#it is only his YEARS of beaten in composure and naturally stoic face that keep him from whipping his head around and freaking out outwardly#he just *knows* this has to do w/ wei ying especially since he can hear the call as well#bc of this he's not totally freaking out but still#he goes to the burial mounds as soon as he can and all the wen are either confused like wwx about why he was included in this#or laughing their asses off that even the *burial mounds* have picked up on their strong feelings and connection#(don't worry lwj was the only non-wen to be brought back bc even if wwx considers jc his brother the burial mounds isn't going to bring bac#someone who tried to kill the rest of them and lwj is the only person that didn't live there who didn't have any animosity for them)#(unfortunately bc jyl never went up the mountain and stayed in yiling the burial mounds can't form a connection w/ her to bring her back)#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#the grandmaster of demonic cultivation#wei wuxian#wen qing#the burial mounds#sentient burial mounds#time travel au#time travel fix it#mdzs fanfic prompt#mdzs fanfiction prompt#do with this what you will

I love a modern-AU dadfics as much as anyone, but we have to stop glossing over how Wei Wuxian adopting A-Yuan would impact the Wens. Because if he does, something has gone terribly wrong for them and it would absolutely affect everyone involved.
The issue is that A-Yuan has primary caregivers other than Wei Wuxian who should be taking care of him, and if they're not in the picture then there’s going to be a reason why. The first person missing is Granny Wen, who is Wen Yuan’s actual caregiver in mdzs and would most likely be taking care of him. Unfortunately in most dad!xian fics she's immediately fridged or has her grandchild taken away from her due to her age off-screen—which would be deeply traumatic for everyone involved, especially if she’s subsequently unable to be involved in her grandchild's life.
The second person who would be taking care of A-Yuan before Wei Wuxian is Wen Qing. Sometimes the in-fic reason for her not being his caregiver is due to unavoidable circumstances (usually financial issues, which like. yikes), but most of the time it comes down to Wen Qing not really… wanting? to be a caregiver, often because she’s too busy or is putting her career first or is just too much of a GirlBoss. So she chooses to adopt out Wen Yuan to Wei Wuxian (again, off-screen) and that's the end of that.
Listen. Not everyone wants to be a parent. Not everyone should be a parent, or can. It’s a reasonable and valid decision to prioritize other parts of your life over parenthood—especially if being a parent or caregiver wasn’t your choice in the first place. But Wen Qing is going to have SOME kind of feeling about letting A-Yuan be adopted out of her family, and that feeling is probably going to be complicated or bittersweet, if not painful. Not only because she’s, you know, a human being with emotions, but Wen Qing’s primary motivation in the book is to take care of her family and keep them together. So her deciding “nah, I’m too much of a girlboss to be a caregiver, here’s a free kid and I’m going to feel absolutely nothing about this cause it’d be inconvenient for the fluff” is not only a dismissal of how complicated that decision would be for her, it’s also wildly out of character. No matter what the reason is, she's going to feel something about it.
(I’m not getting into how Wen Ning is never tapped as another potential caregiver btw because we're really not ready to talk about ableism just yet)
If you love the idea of Wei Wuxian adopting A-Yuan in your modern au, there’s are a couple of changes that can address this. One is to make Wen Yuan not related to Wen Qing and the shared surname is just a coincidence, like Lan Jingyi. Another is to have them be a blended family where they’re all caregivers for A-Yuan, or have Wei Wuxian be his primary caregiver but help A-Yuan actively maintain a connection to his family of origin. Or have Wei Wuxian adopt A-Yuan but the Wens actually get have feelings about it for once, regardless of why it happens—sorrow, frustration, relief, gratitude, regret, something. Let Wen Qing have complicated feelings and let them shape her relationship with Wei Wuxian, too, for better or worse or just messier. Maybe even let Wei Wuxian, who was also separated from his family of origin and is a walking ball of family trauma, have complicated feelings about it as well! Or go the extra mile and let A-Yuan have some emotions about it for once, because regardless of the context the loss or change of support structures is traumatic, especially for a small human.
Anyway read A Temporary Fix by Bosgood for your complex Wen family feels (feat. Lan Wangji adopting Wen Yuan, because all of this goes the same for him as well).

something i would love to read, but definitely can't write it myself
a dark-ish yunmeng jiang sibs where they see 3zun pledging sworn brotherhood and go you know what fuck you all yunmeng is closed, no one allowed in without an official stamp (although we're only going to give those out to non-cultivators with family in the area or something to sell), tax for foreign boats are doubled as well as local products price (unless you a. have a stamp, b. live in yunmeng) and also, we're going to take these wens here without telling you first to "rebuild" for us, thanks for nothing, bye
and then they distribute official letters to pin it on all major cities notice walls, as well as pay for tropes around the jianghu to play some satirizing or just telling people in a funny way how the war went and how the jiang were humiliated etc
then they somehow ended up having jin zixuan running away from his sect to marry jiang yanli, and wei wuxian getting out one (too many) night(s and days) and coming back with a husband, and a new kid (or two! look, a-yuan, siblings for you!), and probably his shishu and his buddy too
and lan xichen, the one most criticized by yunmeng, is going to whine like "but it wasn't what i wanted!! you misunderstood" :(((( and be really shocked when his brother just says bye and never comes back (to stay, for tea, perhaps, with lots of judgemental flavored sweets)

while I enjoy an AU where sect cultivators stood by wwx in his defiance against the cultivation world or supported the wen remnants with him, they can't hit like canon does bc they always feel a little...hm. like if the author is super invested and insists THIS is what should have/would have happened its like they're missing the point of all the characters and their arcs?
#annoyingly confident posts like 'YOU CANT TELL ME JIANG CHENG DIDN'T ADOPT A-YUAN BC LOOK AT HIS ANGRY UNCLE ENERGY#sorry but he canonically doesn't give a shit abt that kid#like I don't know if I can see cql jc MURDERING him but uhm. that character isn't jc it is a projection of someone else#and jyl's timidity and lack of social power wasn't the only thing that kept her doing exactly what the rest of the sect leaders were doing#like...she's not a cruel or harsh person she simply doesn't focus on politics she focuses on domestic matters and her family#and she was very happy to get married into a sect who was at odds w her brother bc she was in love#when hearing the wens running and screaming she simply said they were being 'taken care of'she is very happy to sit back and let characters#in positions of power do what they will...like she did give wen ning soup shes not HEARTLESS. she's just#very focused on her family and home#which isn't unreasonable esp after she's lost so much!#but I don't see her tact extending to politics honestly. unlike say mm or myu she doesn't rly care for it#and she's timid! she's easily intimidated! and these are just...parts of her character that feel real#she's happy in her family bc she feels protected but outside of that her emotional and psychological safety is guarded#I mean....myu nonwithstanding#anyway. I like when authors see her for a timid homemaker who cares primary abt the domestic sphere#and still respects that and engages with it#not my usual preference for female characters but family is EVERYTHING to jyl. and without that focus it just doesn't feel as much like her#the aus rly are fun tho#NOT THAT those responsibilities on her were always light or that she didn't sacrifice anything bc of course she did - she was jc and wwx's#crutch for YEARS#and I realize I compared her response to the sects leaders'. I know she's not a leader!#but like...I also understand her priorities and how devastated she was when wwx left#and why that loss for her overshadows the high moral principles wwx is adhering to#she doesn't want innocent people hurt she simply wants her brother back etc.#family being everything to her also.means it gives her her strength and courage and resolve tho!!!#EP25 DEFENSE OF WWX AT DAFAN ONE OF THE BEST SCENES IN THE SHOW >>>>>>#im on mobile but I made a typo I meant NOT guarded. you know#cql txp

I listened to this amazing piece of music today!
youtube
And this song would match so well to an AU where Wei Wuxian went full evil during the siege of Burial Mounds. Finally becoming the horried rumors spread by the Lanling Jin and their cowardly allies!
Becoming the Evil Yiling Patriarch who no longer shows any mercy! He has finally embraced the demonic path and become a true demonic cultivator! A master of darkness and the ruler of the dead!
He is now at the same level of a immortal cultivator.
And now during the siege. The great four sects and their allies are in for a hellish battle.

Wen Qing drinks filter coffee, black. She knows it probably isn’t good for her in the long run but she’s a doctor so she can do what she wants.
Wen Ning drinks decaf soy milk lattes. Every so often he thinks ‘I wish I could just have a normal latte’ but if someone messes up his order he feels ill for a full day.

I just realized, LXC was carrying the twins and trying to protect Jueying and their library in his qiankun sleeve while being on the run during the war in the aged up verse.
In this verse, Lan Xichen decided to seek refuge at Mount Dafan after escaping from the Cloud Recesses, since Wen Xu/WRH would never think to look for him in the depths of Wen territory. Wen Qing agreed to disguise Jueying as an adopted Wen cousin and conceal LXC's presence there until the twins were born; and when Yunhua and Yunhai were a month old, Lan Xichen set up a ward around the mountain and left for Qinghe.

Wei Ying, Wen Qing and A-Yuan
Some context before we start! This is set in the Hogwarts universe, just retaining the sects and clans and the type of magic (don't think too hard about it, I'm confused too). Wen Ruohan used to be Minister of Magic, now it's Jin Guangshan. He's oppressing the cultivation world, especially the innocent Dafan Wens. A-Yuan is a baby and is not at all involved, and Wen Qing has to save him somehow, even if she can't save everyone.
"A-Yuan, you've been awfully quiet all this time! Did Qing-jiejie tell you off for something?" Wei Ying smiles at A-Yuan ruffling his hair as he fake-glares at Wen Qing with a hand on her wrist.
"Qing-jie, I've told you to not be too hard on him. It is this poor mother that suffers when his child is hurt!"
Wen Qing rolls her eyes so hard it hurts, before slapping his hand away. "This is not the time for your dramatics, Wei Ying. You know more than anyone how serious this is."
She watches Wei Ying's smile falter at the edges, before he smiles even wider than before.
"Aiya, jiejie, you worry too much about everything! See, we have to be carefree and calm about such things! Nothing's going to—"
"I don't remember you being this carefree when Jiang Cheng lost his core."
Wen Qing watches the blow burn across Wei Ying's face, and ignores how her heart hurts when his smile drops and his eyes harden.
"Please keep your voice down, Wen Qing. I don't want the whole pub knowing, gods." Wei Ying's voice is colder now as he leans back in his seat. "And, besides, as one bad leader falls, another rises. It's natural. I don't understand why you're so terrified of this. If it was Wen Ruohan before, it's Jin Guangshan now. There's not much we can do about it except being careful, is there?"
"You say it so easily," Wen Qing snaps, "He's killing people, Wei Ying! He's killing more people in a day than Wen Ruohan did in a week! And yet, no one will raise a hand against him because the ones who are being killed are us. Even when we did nothing."
Wei Ying laughs, a dark humorless chuckle that startles A-Yuan, before raising his hand nonchalantly. "Isn't this hand enough? I'm not letting him do shit anymore, jie. As long as you don't decide to throw yourselves at his feet, you'll be okay. I will—"
"Exactly, you idiot. That's what I've been trying to tell you for the past few minutes. Don't help us. Go back to the Muggle world, help Jiang Cheng set Lotus Pier straight. If you can't do that, go somewhere else, experiment with your dark arts. Or, just go to Gusu. Lan Zhan, you know he is—"
"This is not about Lan Zhan, is it?" Wei Ying snaps, slamming his wand down on the table. "Don't bring him into this. He's already done too much for me, lying to the Aurors and what not. I don't want to burden him more. Lan Zhan doesn't deserve that."
Wen Qing inhales roughly, gripping him hard by the wrist. "Lower your voice, you're scaring A-Yuan."
A-Yuan stares back and forth between them, eyes wide with fear. Wen Qing watches Wei Ying's eyes soften, and something akin to self-hatred fills his eyes as he goes to say something, but she beats him to it.
"You say Lan Zhan has done too much for you, and you can't let him do anymore for you. It's the same for us, Wei Ying. You've done too much for us. You've taken your own life apart for us. What if you have to go to Azkaban, what then? Who will protect us if you go away and they all turn on us? I can't even save myself — how am I going to save all of us? This is why I say it's better if we just—"
"You will not surrender to that man, jie." Wei Ying's voice rings like thunder in the small booth, "I won't let you do that. You've all— you can't do that to everyone. They are all—"
"Wei Ying," Wen Qing interjects, eyes teary as she stares at him helplessly. "This is the only way. The only young people with us is me and A-Ning. The grannies and uncles are all ready to go with us. This is the only way. We're not scared to die, none of us are. If all this mess ends if we die, then we'll do just that. We'll go to him."
"Jie," A tear slides down Wei Ying's cheek as he holds on to her hand desperately, "Jie, you can't do this to me."
"This is the only way, brother. And as for A-Yuan," She smiles reassuringly at A-Yuan, who, surprisingly, doesn't smile back, "I'll find a way before we leave."
"I'm not letting you do this," Wei Ying says in a determined voice. "I won't let you do this. We'll find a way, jie, I can't just let you—"
"I'm sorry, Wei Ying," is all the warning he gets before Wen Qing points her wand at him.
"Jie?" Wei Ying's voice is laced with betrayal and confusion, as he stares back and forth between her and the wand.
Wen Qing closes her eyes, gritting her teeth as she holds back tears and whispers, "Stupefy!"
Wei Ying's eyes widen once, before closing, as he falls down on the table with a soft thud. Wen Qing ignores the tears streaming down her face as she takes out the adoption papers and the ink, quickly pressing Wei Ying's thumb against it.
"Jiejie," A-Yuan calls, crying as well, "Will Xian-gege be okay?"
"Yes, he will, love, as long as you are with him. You remember what I said, don't you?" Wen Qing crouches down to his level, ruffling his hair. "You are going to live with your Xian-gege from now. Take care of him. Take care of yourself. Be good, and convince your gege to go see your Rich-gege, alright?"
A-Yuan nods, rubbing his tears away. "Jiejie, will I see you again?"
Wen Qing smiles sadly, kissing his forehead, "Maybe, love, maybe."
She then turns to Wei Ying, knocked out on the table, and presses a kiss to his forehead too.
"Wei Ying, my little brother," Wen Qing sighs, tears falling into his long hair. "Jiejie's sorry, yeah? I know you said you'd raise him, but not like this, ever. This is the only way we can save him if we are gone. I'm sorry, A-Ying. Jiejie's so, so sorry."
Then she turns away, manages a smile at A-Yuan, and gives the papers to him. "Give these to your gege, okay?"
He nods again, not crying anymore, but Wen Qing knows that look on his face. Determined, as if given a great responsibility. An expression too old to be on that young face. The same expression she had seen on Wei Ying's face when he first offered to help them.
Wen Qing bites down her tears, embracing A-Yuan hard once more before leaving.
She doesn't look back.
