Hi! Just a thought I wanted to share. Y'know whats crazy?? When i first read the current version of The Exile the whole time I was thinking, and I swear im not exagerating, not one bit, that it's the best shit I've ever read in my entire goddamn life holly fookin christ, not only the superb writing but the whole story-telling itself, and then I saw you were doing a rewrite and thought "uh..whatever in god's name for??'' so I got silenty pissed at you for a while lmaoooOO
Genuinely hilarious b/c there are so many parts in The Exile, specifically early-game, that make me physically recoil in disgust at my writing now 💀
Tbf 90% of the rewrite is really dedicated to helping the flow of the game and fixing the plot holes that inevitably arise when one is writing a store quite literally by the seat of their pants 🧍♂️
So the re-written version is just me being like "haha wow look at this foreshadowing, oooh, look, narrative themes, ooh!" and also fleshing out a lot of places that were skipped for time :)

Broke (2016): BBC Sherlock is a phenomenal piece of media and anything that seems like a flaw just hasn't been fully explored yet
Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)
Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked
#these just sum up my personal takes at the years in question and also what i'm seeing on tumblr/other social media#bbc sherlock#sherlock holmes#and i actually have a lot more thoughts to share on this series#specifically relating to the cultural impact#there is SO much about the show that goes unappreciated in hindsight because of how public perception of it has soured#and i totally fell into this as well--i still regularly rewatch hbomberguy's video absolutely dismantling the series and he isn't wrong!!#but what i'm saying is that i think it's easy for us to look at a piece of media (especially one so massively popular) like sherlock...#with very black-and-white lenses. it wouldn't have become so popular if there wasn't something inherent in it that resonated with people#and that's being buried (and i totally forgot it) because 'sherlock is cringe and problematic. can't believe i liked that'#which again it IS full of issues and those are well-documented as they should be. future portrayals should not repeat those mistakes#BUT being able to impact so many people is a merit in itself. and that's only possible because of other genuinely good things about the show#yes the way they handled the relationship between john and sherlock was riddled with problems YES it was often queerbaiting#AND the way they portrayed that relationship had a deep effect on me. i saw a lot of myself in sherlock and the complex way he loved john#the nuanced feelings he had about john's marriage to mary. the part (in s4!) where john calls him inhuman for not feeling romantic love#there was genuine intention and care put into some parts of this show and it comes through in scenes like those. they impact people.#and because of this realization i'm going to (eventually) do a rewatch of the show. i'm much older and i want to see how i'll view it now#but i want to go into it--and i want everyone who engages with it still--to have an open mind and evaluate it for what it is#not what we expected it to be (secret episode anyone?) or what the cultural drift has turned it into (the tiktok of sherlock's mind palace)#but the messy problematic somewhat-heartfelt massively significant and ultimately meaningful piece of media it actually was#anyway that's my thoughts would love to hear y'all's perspectives#funny how after all this time making a sherlock post still feels like i'm poking a bees' nest lol please be kind!#kay can i just catch my breath for a second#kay has a party in the tags

i will never emotionally get over how we could have a serious, mature r rated animated show focused around Harley and how it could have really shown the horrific and traumatizing aspects of her character/journey that the films didn't, could have shown her struggle with hearing voices and seeing lil Harleen, could have shown her growth as she recovers and deals with the PTSD she would have after being with him
and instead we got.... an offensive, problematic parody show that's essentially redeemed her abuser so he could be made into just another humourous reoccurring character instead of treating his actions like the serious, traumatic vile actions they were, that treats sa victims like drama queen objects to be commented about and gawked at, and then kills them (???) They fucking killed Nightwing and made it so they buried him on his stomach so his coffin could have an ass outline ITS VILE WHAT THE FUCK

looking @ old fic i started when i was 14/15 is so funny bc im realizing once again why i never mark fics as abandoned even if its been literal years since i've touched them. specifically i was checking docs for stuff i started and either did or didn't post to ffn.
and its like. nothing is bad??? like i can see where my outside-the-box ideal of fic writing comes from. not just fics but writing in general, i'm p sure. even if it's a total cliche plot setup, there are details on each that rly make it stand out like oh yeahhhhhh i did have this great idea once upon a time.
funny too bc was it executed well in prose??? no absolutely not i wrote like shit when i was 15. would i revive an idea one day and revise it to be less cliche or cringy while still keeping the stand-out elements??? yea maybe. i might. everything i'm currently working on that i started from 2021 up to now still holds my supreme interest, but like i'm not gonna say never.
esp since i write fic first and foremost for my own need and specifically what i like to read, it makes it impossible to consider an idea i've thought extensively about "not worth writing anymore". anyway not making this too long i jus found everything interesting to consider

This is a bit of a stretch...
I sometimes wonder whether the "ughh why is fandom more puritan" is because fandoms online are no longer concentrated in Western countries and now encompass a lot of conservative countries who naturally will have a lot of conservative fans and they're uncomfortable with sexual media because...it's just...not a thing in a few countries and Westerners are seen as perverted in certain countries and now fans are putting it in English.
Don't get me wrong I still think the way tumblr shaped up fandom spaces over the past 10+ years is def more responsible but I've run into a specific kind of "ew sex" feels like a cultural knee jerk and people try to use the Accepted Social Media terms while lowkey bringing up their culture but to Westerners it just comes off as Woke and progressive instead of a conservative backlash.
#actually funny but with HOTD i've had massive successes in guessing someone's background on twitter and tiktok based on what they post lol#oh also reddit ... anyway that made me feel very self conscious as well#not because it's a “go touch grass” activity#but because...i'm very much the same....demographic?#Westerners aren't aware how much they're perceived as immoral perverts in some parts of the world#fandom meta#fandom blahs#the millions of “she's a hijabi! This Is Offensive!" arguments#literally can't have Muslim women struggling with their faith and identity like that in Egyptian media#very cringe but I always had mixed feelings about those arguments about hijabis in the West#Again if you're from a conservative country/background family and you're scoffing good on you#but...if I continue speaking...

And it probably says more about me than anything else. But I am looping the In The End video to find the right screen grab to redraw. #here's some of the classics on that list i have beef with btw:#i have tried to read A Confederacy of Dunces several times and it's funny but it's also so cringe and Ignatius is so obnoxious#that i find it too difficult to finish like i just feel depressed and bad for everybody around him too much#i tried reading Infinite Jest like a decade ago and i got like 200 pages in and i remember thinking it felt like#such a slog the entire time because he's just so gd wordy and also i stopped liking DFW after i heard the abuse allegations against him#frankenstein i didnt read that long ago but i just remember finding it so boring for some reason?? i feel i might need to read it again#dracula ngl i feel like im cheating a bit saying ive completely read it because i loved the beginning and then HATED so much of the rest#the characters were just so boring and melodramatic hahaha i just liked the part where jonathan was doing a travel diary#and trapped in the castle tbh and after that i skimmed quite a bit#i almost flipped my shit when i saw ender's game on there because I ALWAYS mix it up with ready player one by ernest cline#which i bought the audiobook of a while back and hated every minute of it i dont think its good at all#but it wasnt that so phew my faith in this list is somewhat restored#i read most of the first game of thrones book and was disappointed tbh maybe because id seen the show already#so i was like 'this feels almost exactly the same except worse?' because i'd been expecting it to give me more depth and insight#into the characters but instead it felt exactly the same and i still didnt love any of the characters enough to feel attached to them#also i am fully aware me not personally liking or vibing with a book doesnt mean it doesnt deserve to be considered great btw#but i think if youre gonna be like me and force yourself to go through a bunch of lists like this very seriously then you also need to just#let yourself be like 'yeah not for me' without feeling too bad about it sometimes too#often times i dont particularly love the classics or 'important books' but at the same time#i still feel like im getting more out of reading them than just grabbing the newest hyped up books that also dont do anything for me#maybe not in a 'wow i loved reading this' way but in like a#'i now have first-hand knowledge of this thing that is so influential / so frequently referenced'#or 'this challenged me and i feel like i did a mental/emotional workout or gave me some new food for thought'#or 'made me more aware of what gaps in my knowledge and reading skills and what my tastes are too'#sort of way...#it really just depends on what you're reading for and why and what you're hoping to get out of it a lot of the time maybe#it's like the homework i give myself to go through these lists that i also intersperse with the stuff i read more just for fun#p

Everytime I see a snippet from the outlaws webtoon I’m that much more relieved that I don’t read it regularly anymore
#everything looks out of context and I’m sure reading it in full won’t give it any more context either#Talia is now added to the list of characters they did some absolute horrid cringe shit to#i did read some parts of Bruce and Jason ‘making amends’#but it’s just so funny because they did absolutely nothing to advance their conflict they’re just reset back to square one#of Jason being like ‘I LIKE being an ~edgy outlaw~’#and Bruce is like you never needed my approval to be ~edgy~ but if you kill in Gotham again I will bash your skull into a wall#like what do you think will happen if he tries to kill someone in Gotham again. you can never go back to that again#now that you’ve thrown them into this weird box

s11 and what i've seen of s12 have been so interesting to me..... something changed but i can't articulate what and why and how my taste and my preferences and my expectations affect the way i think about these later seasons
#new writers? something in the air? it's just different#not BAD it's just. there's a kind of‚ i wanna say cheesiness or something about s11 that i didn't expect#there are moments that i really really loved and some i was just repulsed by in a different way than ever before?#there's also the quality of the production i think but that's whatever. like it's not the same show because it can't be. right#but um before s11 i don't think i've felt that that sunny was gimmicky. the schemes and hijinks and stuff felt organic in a way#oh i did feel kind of weird about (dissatisfied with?) some parts of frank reynolds' little beauties for example but it never felt like#that was overpowering the comedy and the fun#NO sitcom is consistently funny or consistently delivers the type of humor You personally like#there are episodes i don't love in my favorite seasons too#i don't know i guess i just thought s11 was more interesting (from the character side of things) than it was funny#but then again i did think the last three episodes were also just funny#and then with s12‚ which i've seen half of lol. it's weeeird as well#because i do love it but some of it made me cringe hard but some of it was so earnest and so fun i was grinning uncontrollably#but i'll see what i think at the end.. and after a full rewatch#which IS going to happen. so#you know.#kata.txt#iasip
