so funny to me how ppl on tumblr will read a post that says, within the post, SEVERAL times, “hey this isn’t super well-thought out discussion and shouldn’t be treated as such i’m just sharing an individual opinion and my word should not be taken as fact” and then refuse to understand that whether they agree or disagree with the op
#marzi speaks#before anyone asks this isn’t a reference to anything in particular. just a trend i’ve noticed here#someone will go ‘i’m kinda emotional rn so this post probably won’t be the most well-constructed i’m kinda just venting’#and then either be like ‘THIS OPINION IS THE ONLY CORRECT OPINION TO HAVE THANK YOU OP FOR BEING RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING AND TEACHING US’#or ‘UMMMM no fuck this. fuck you. this one sentence felt vaguely aggressive to me and therefore you are WRONG and HATEFUL’#‘and you need to apologize to me and everyone else bc you’re being a Shit Person’#like genuinely. i know this is the piss on the poor website but can we learn critical thinking. please#like we need to consider intended message. intended audience. and intended impact#if someone making a vent post on their blog with 20 followers uses highly emotional language#that is not them presenting a subjective argument as objective!#intended message: op is experiencing a negative feeling#intended audience: their 20 followers who know and understand that this is just someone expressing a frustration#intended impact: little to none. maybe receive comfort or validation#not every post made on the internet is someone giving a college lecture or a speech or even standing on a soapbox#it’s like hearing someone mutter to themselves in public and deciding that they were trying to teach a class#also not everyone who disagrees with you is trying to change your mind#that’s another thing i’ve noticed. many folks here view disagreements as a thing to be won and moralized. it’s kinda shit imo#anyways post done. funnily enough i feel the need to disclaim that this is not a smart mars post this is a ‘this thing annoys me’ mars post

Hi, my name is Ursula Keter. I'm a 61 year old mother to a teenage daughter and we live in Houston, Texas. Today I ask for your kindness and help as my daughter and I are on the verge of homelessness. I have diabetes and on January 11th of 2024, I very suddenly fell ill overnight with diabetic neuropathy and nerve damage in my hands, arms, legs, and feet caused by high blood sugar levels due to being unable to afford doctor's appointments and medication consistently. After spending a month and a half in a rehabilitation center, it has still left me unable to walk or effectively use my hands. I'm asking for help to afford food, rent, utilities, phone bill, car insurance, as well as basic necessities. If we cannot pay our April and future rent, we will be homeless and potentially on the streets. You can donate, share or offer prayers,all shall be highly appreciated.
Hello “Ursula,” seeing as your account was literally made yesterday, I don’t believe you! Tumblr scammer spotted! 👀

if u are ever confused by anything gale dekarios does or says just know that whatever it is stems from the fact that, a) he has more hubris in his little finger than a thousand people have in their whole body, and b) he believes he has absolutely no self-worth outside of his magic.

Hii im from Indonesian I got a little question for you, after playing mushroom oasis and astronought I’m just curious why are you using Indonesian language, mawar : rose and bidadari/malaikat : angel ? Like don’t get me wrong it’s pretty rare (or maybe I rarely saw it) people using Indonesian language as for reference
I also really like the way you make a characters it’s very detailed :0 I very enjoy reading your blog’s
I've never mentioned it but I'm actually from SEA! I don't wanna mention which country specifically but it's easy enough to figure out. It's just for fun and flavor using words from a language I'm familiar with!
And thank you! Part of the reason they're so detailed (I assume you meant in terms of personality, backstory, etc!) is because people send me fun questions to ponder about and it's really helped flesh out my characters!
On a side note, I know I've sprinkled in some Spanish too but sadly I don't speak it. I do think it's a beautiful language, but I hesitate to use it without understanding it properly.
The one full line I've ever used that Atom says in Astronought is from a song (Waltz in E-major, Op. 15 "Moon Waltz" by Cojum Dip), so I assume the phrase is correct!

people take these social justice “catchphrases” and apply them to all situations without nuance or understanding of the underlying ideal. because there’s (rightfully) pushback of the “it/they were a product of their time” to excuse various -isms bc you absolutely find contemporaries during slavery and the Holocaust and when women weren’t considered persons, etc., etc. who knew it was wrong. we shouldn’t act this the way things were was because they didn’t know better but because they chose that path for more power. absolutely.
but if you extend this attitude to, like, Victorian English literature, you get people going like, “But they knew better 😌 You can’t excuse them 😌😌 it’s bad feminism/homophobic/whatever 😌😌😌” and it’s like. you gotta learn to hold two (seemingly) contradictory thoughts in your head at once. I’m begging you.
there’s no shortcut to “consuming” media and news and the world around you the most “correctly” and “morally”. all you can do is put a toolkit together that will help you in interpreting the information you’re receiving. you don’t have to trust your first knee jerk reaction. in fact, you probably shouldn’t! if it feels off, spend some time with why before running off to be loudly wrong on Al Gore’s internet. it’ll make everyone’s lives easier.
it drives me bonkers the way people don’t know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said “it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative.” and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we’ve become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it’s the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century “uranianism” and misogyny. second of all, i’m sorry that oscar wilde didn’t include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess…

Hitoshi Shinsou-
THIGHS = 🙏
Let’s be real, this man is a total thigh guy. The type of person to love any type of thighs no matter the shape and size. He loves thunder thighs, he loves the stretch marks on them, that mark the growth of his s/o’s body. He loves the way they jiggle when his s/o walks, and the way they expand when they sit down. All he wants to do is place his hand on his s/o’s thigh and squeeze. He even ops out of using his pillows, just to use his s/o’s thighs.(he has to use every bone, every muscle, every ounce of power not to pounce on you and stick his head in between your thighs). Don’t get me wrong he also loves smaller thighs too, the way he can wrap his hand around them, makes him release an internal sigh.
Monoma Neito-
CHEEKS (I won’t specify..)
Let’s be real, Monoma is all about himself but when it comes to his s/o, he’s all about them. Like literally obsessed, to the point you two will have weekly (daily) talks.. ANYWAYS! Monoma is really all about your cheeks, he loves grabbing them to pull you into a kiss, and he loves poking them to make you angry. Staring at you with the utmost admiration while he watches your cute face scrunch with agitation. And once he makes you mad he’ll kiss your cheek, only to sit back and watch you get all red..
Denki Kaminari-
CHESTS 🫡
AHHHH. I love this man, even though he’s a little bit of a pervert.. But ever since you became his s/o he’s only a pervert for you. He loves all different kinds of chests, big, medium, small, Xsmall, lopsided ANY KIND. He loves sticking his face between them, grabbing them, and even massaging them. Just like Shinsou, he’ll op out a pillow for yo mm chest ANY. TIME. He loves being your baby.
Tenya Iida-
FOREHEADS!!
MAN. MMM MMM MM. Iida is really all about foreheads, he loves your forehead no matter what. If you’re insecure about it, he’s definitely the one to make you more confident about it. No matter how big or small he’ll always, CONSTANTLY be placing kisses on your forehead. Especially after a long day of work he loves coming home to you, covering you in kisses. And don’t try to block your forehead!! this man is crazy for you, like really!
Eijiro Kirishima-
!!TUMMY/STOMACH!!
This man will love every. single. part of your body, he is quite literally your biggest fan. Whether you are the kind of person to love the outdoors, and daylight, or the kind of person to love the indoors and night sky. He literally adores your stomach, it doesn’t matter if your fit, or not. He loves giving you back and stomach massages. He loves cuddles too, he loves to cup your stomach and give you kisses trailing down from your throat not stopping until he feels like it. And even if you’re insecure he’ll make sure you feel loved, and love yourself no matter what. In his light, you’re incredibly important!
Hanta Sero-
NECK MAN
BOYYYYYY. This man loves your neck, he loves wrapping his hands around it, kissing it, sucking it, anything.
He loves it when you’re out in public he’ll grab the back of your neck and lead you around, whispering in your ear. AHHH. He especially loves backing you up to a wall or cornering you just to suck and mark your neck to make sure you, and anybody else knows who you belong to. So hot.
Tokoyami Fumikage-
EAR MAN (trust trust)
THIS BOY BRO. He’s a little insecure that his face isn’t like others, so it’s not like he can use his face the same way others can. So he loves pulling you in tight, weather your cuddling, or standing together just to nip and whisper nothings in your ear. He loves the way he drops his voice, watching as your blush crawls up your neck landing on your beautiful bashful face.
Mirio Togata-
STRETCH MARKS!!!!!!! 🙇🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️
THIS MAN. THIS MAN IS A GOD. He loves your stretch marks, no matter what. No matter how deep or long, his love for you does not change. He loves the stretch marks on your chest, thighs-whether it’s on the outside or inside of them, he loves your tummy marks, even the tiny marks on your back and arms. HE. LOVES. THEM. When you two get intimate he makes sure to kiss and caress them!
I HOPE YOU ENJOYED! Please, comment or message me if you have any preferred people you want me to write about! And feedback is really appreciated! Don’t be shy, Ask!
ALSOOO I was thinking about writing this but for the female characters? What do you guys think?

1910's music: Edwin Payne style
Hi ya’ll! Friendly music teacher/opera singer here to answer a question that pretty much no one has asked (except me): what music would Edwin have listened to/enjoyed when he was alive?
I’ve separated this into three different genres (classical, jazz, and pop), so the entire thing is pretty long. I've also tried to give references for any additional information provided, but most of it is coming straight from my brain after years of music history classes, so feel free to correct me if I get anything wrong.
Classical Music
So, the first thing to know about me is that I’m a big pianist!Edwin truther, and I'm going to be talking about it a lot in this post. It was extremely common for families (especially wealthy families) to have their children train in some sort of instrument from an early age back then, so learning music was something that Edwin likely would have been forced to do.
There are some classical pieces that I have already heard mention of amongst the fandom, so I will stick them in the 'honorable mentions' section, but I want to feature some music that I haven't seen mentioned in conjunction with Edwin's character yet. 1. Erik Satie's Trios Gnosiennes (1893)
So, I've always associated the first three Gnosiennes with Edwin not only because they're so hauntingly beautiful, but also because they're rhythmically very different than a lot of other classical music of his time. The Gnosiennes are largely played in 'free time' (with no time signatures or bar lines), which is a bit unusual for the genre (though modern classical music has a lot more of it). Satie's music really pulled away from a lot of musical customs, spurning traditional forms and tonal structures in favor of more creative options, and I think Edwin would have really enjoyed it.
Edwin's possible interest in breaking musical customs will come back a lot throughout this post, but given that he is often characterized as going against the social grain (whether he was trying to or not), I think he really would have enjoyed Satie's works as a whole. However, Trios Gnosiennes just really speak to me for his character.
2. Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring (premiered in 1913)
The Rite of Spring was a Russian ballet that Stravinsky was commissioned to write for the Ballet Russes company. The work was known for its dissonance and barbarity, and the dancing was described as 'jerky' and 'hedonistic'.
Now, do I think that Edwin would have particularly enjoyed the sound of the the Rite of Spring? Maybe not, but I imagine he likely would have respected its departure from the musical decorum of his time (the piece later went on to be considered one of the the earliest examples of modernism in music). The first public showing of The Rite of Spring caused the theater to break out into a riot partially due to the fact that they thought the music/dancing was a work of blasphemy, and I just think Edwin would have found that hilarious.
3. Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), particularly Spargi d'amaro pianto (the famous 'mad scene' aria)
I don't think Edwin would have been a fan of opera as a whole, but I do think that this work's entertaining twists, literary origins, and technically challenging composition might have caught his eye (I even went so far as to sing through this aria a few nights ago because I was curious, and yeah, its really fucking hard).
Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic opera based on the 1819 novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Walter Scott, which was based on the real life story of a woman named Janet Dalrymple. Lucia was performed at the Met nearly every season from 1903-1972, and I imagine that if it was doing well in America, it must have been doing numbers in Europe.
Honorable Mentions - Claude Debussy's Clair de Lune and Deux Arabesques - Frédéric Chopin's Noctures (particularly Op. 9, No. 1) and Études (particularly Op. 25, No. 11) - Erik Satie's Trios Gymonepdies
Jazz Music
So, this is where my pianist!Edwin headcanon starts to diverge from the pretty much all of the other music-related headcanons I've seen.
Technically speaking, 'jazz' as we know it didn't really exist when Edwin was alive; he died literally one the cusp of the the Golden Age of Jazz, which is a huge fucking bummer. Jass (as it would've have been referred to in the 1910's) mostly consisted of ragtime and early blues, and was considered to be a 'fringe' style of music (pretty much entirely due to racism). As far as acceptability went, being a teenager with a love for 'jass' in the 1910's would have been the social equivalent of being a teenager with a love for ska or punk music in the 80's (the parallels!!!)
I think its pretty well argued within the fandom that Edwin is a bit rebellious when it come to authority and societal standards, and even though I think he was probably less of a little shit while he was alive, there's no way he was just totally fine with living inside the lines. I posit that, as a rebellion, he would have spurned classical music and became a ragtime pianist (which was one of the main precursors to jazz as we know it today). I actually wrote a fic about this way back when I first joined the fandom, for anyone who's interested!
1. Scott Joplin's Sugar Cane Rag (1908), Fig Leaf Rag (1908), and Paragon Rag (1909)
Scott Joplin (the King of Ragtime) was the most famous ragtime pianist of all time, and one of the driving forces behind creating the jazz genre as we know it. I guarantee that you guys have heard his most famous song, The Entertainer, at least once, and have probably heard his Maple Leaf Rag as well. If Edwin was into ragtime, then its a sure thing that he would have been a big fan of Scott Joplin's rags. I picked the three that I thought suited him best.
2. James Scott's Frog Legs Rag (1906) and Sunburst Rag (1909)
James Scott was also a famous American ragtime composer, and both of the listed songs would have been released when Edwin was pretty young. He probably wouldn't have been old enough to play them for a few years, depending on his training, but thinking of a little 12 year old Edwin learning to play these (as well as Scott Joplin's rags) in his free time just fucking tickles me. I love it so much.
3. Davy Peyton and Spencer Williams' I Ain't Got Nobody, recorded by Marion Harris in 1916
I Ain't Got Nobody was an early jazz standard from 1915 that eventually developed into a multi-genre standard (meaning that it was considered a standard for multiple genres, ranging from jazz to pop to country). I don't have a lot of reasoning for this one other that I think that Edwin would have just really liked Marion Harris' voice.
Honorable Mentions - Euday L. Bowman's Twelfth Street Rag (aka the Spongebob song) - Artie Matthews' Weary Blues
Pop Music
So, a disclaimer here. My music degree required me to take jazz and classical music history classes, which did not cover pop music of the 1910's, so I have fewer historical insights to offer about this genre. However, whenever I think about these songs, I always picture Edwin listening to them through a phonograph while doing homework on his bed, like a teenage girl listening to Sabrina Carpenter or Chappell Roan while studying (I know that's silly, but I think its just such a fun visual). 1. Leo Friedman's Let Me Call You Sweetheart, recorded by the Arthur Clough in 1910
Let Me Call You Sweetheart was one of the highest charting songs throughout the early 1910's, and the most popular version was recorded by a group called the Peerless Quartet. Edwin doesn't really strike me as a quartet enjoyer, though, and this version by Arthur Clough was released the same year. I think he would have enjoyed the tonal quality of Clough's voice much more.
2. Grace Le Boy's The Good Ship Mary Anne, recorded by Nora Bayes in 1914
Nora Bayes was a very famous vaudeville performer of the 1920's, and lot of her biggest hits were recorded shortly after Edwin died (like, literally 1917-1925). I wrote a snippet for a fic that got left on the cutting room floor a while back about the song itself providing a positive association with the term 'Mary Anne', and I still stick by that. In this song, the name 'Mary Anne' only refers to a ship.
3. Irving Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band, recorded by Arthur Collins and Byron G. Harlan in 1911
So, this song could technically go under the jazz section, but I'm going to put it here, and I'll explain why. Jazz is an art from that was created and popularized by black musicians, which is why it was seen as such an undesirable art form for such a long time. People liked the music, but they didn't like that it was made by black artists. Alexander's Ragtime Band originated in Tin Pan Alley and was one of the top charting songs for much of 1911 (first in America, then overseas), but it was created by a white artist that was simply 'jumping a trend'. Strictly speaking, genre-wise, its not even a ragtime song—it's a march. It's just about ragtime.
I honestly don't really even like this song that much, and I'm not sure Edwin would have very strong feelings about it either. However, it was an extremely pivotal song for the time period, and likely would have been inescapable (or as inescapable as music could be back in the 1910's, given that music required either records or live performances). Think of it as the equivalent of a pop song that you could really do without, but its so popular that it keeps winning awards and playing in every Forever 21 and H&M within a ten mile radius.
Honorable Mentions - Gus Edwards' By the Light of the Silvery Moon, recorded by Ada Jones - Percy Wenrich's Moonlight Bay, recorded by Dolly Connolly
~~~~
I hope you guys enjoyed this! I also made a playlist, if you'd like to take a look (I couldn't find all the songs, and not all of them are time period accurate, but I tried my best).
If ya'll liked this, I might make one for Charles and dive into ska and Rude Boy culture a little bit. Feel free to send me any questions or ideas you have about all this stuff, too! I love talking about it.
Can't Fix Fix A Broken Heart - Chapter 5
Tumblr media
Now on Ao3
Chapter 4 Chapter 6
Chapter 5 - New Beginnings With Newgate
18+, MDNI.
I realized “Moby Jr” is not canonically in OP. It's from “Oh, Sweet Child of Mine” by mamamittens on Ao3. That story got me down the OP yandere rabbit hole in general. I’m not caught up with current OP yet so sometimes I get things wrong. Please feel free to correct me.
Also, there will be more smut eventually. Just not quite yet. We’re sailing in the right direction.
You walked down the road robotically, not thinking about where you were walking. You had said your teary eyed goodbye to the Brothers - you really would miss them. Walking, you were flanked by the four men, who were slowing down to match your shorter stride. Ace was holding your things at his insistence. You didn’t feel like talking and they weren’t asking you anything. You were already tired and wanted to nap - you didn’t have much stamina. You’d run through a gamut of emotions and fixed all those tables. Normally the fixing alone would have you snoozing. But you had a feeling there wouldn’t be a chance to sleep for a while to come. After all, it was only early afternoon.
“Cariña, would you like me to carry you? You look like you could use a rest,” offered Thatch. You blushed a little. Carry you? Like a baby? Were you that pathetic? You still had enough pride to walk even if the offer was a little tempting.
“Ah, no? Thank you though? We’re almost at the wharf,” you said, pointing down the road. And indeed you were - you saw the Moby Jr. gently bobbing on the water. Once the cobblestones of the street ended and the boardwalk to the docks began, your hands started to shake. It was just a lot. You couldn’t even separate all your feelings of sorrow, loss, nervousness and trepidation from one another.
Vista, Thatch, and Ace all continued walking while Marco stopped you for a moment. He put his hand on your shoulder and turned you towards him. You looked up at him, feeling unsure and weak. He chucked your chin with one large index finger. Chin up, it will be OK yoi. You’ll be among friends. Oyaji is intense but he means well.” You nodded silently. You weren’t sure about friends but it did make you feel better that you already were acquainted with a few crew members.
Marco moved his hand to your shoulder and you saw some blue flames leave his arm for yours. You screeched in surprise - was the fire going to burn you? Marco looked down and only smiled, keeping his arm where it was. “Don’t worry, those are just small healing flames from the Phoenix. I forget to control them some of the time.” He tilted his head and asked “are you injured somewhere? They don’t appear indiscriminately. I’ll check you out when we get back to the main ship.”
“O-oh, that won’t be necessary, I’m completely fine,” you said nervously shifting your shoulders under his arm. Marco hummed but didn’t say anything else.
Everything blurred together as you set sail on the Moby Jr. Since the visit to your island was for supplies and partying, you weren’t far from the Moby Dick itself. You felt your eyelids drooping - the afternoon sun was so warm and the sea air so pleasant. You had forgotten that being aboard a ship could be relaxing. You knew you were at your limit and needed to rest. You had a hard time sleeping in front of other people - let alone people you didn’t know that well. And the boat was rather small - it would be hard to find a spot where you felt secure enough and out of the way enough to actually sleep. You poked around a little bit and decided to rest between two of the supply crates they were bringing back. Just a quick little refresher and you’d be all set…
You didn’t know how much time had passed before you heard footsteps stop in front of you. You immediately woke up with a start, in full fight or flight mode. You had always been a light sleeper but now were attuned to any noise approaching you when you were sleeping. Marco was crouched in front of you, giving you a relaxed smile.
“We’re here yoi. Let’s not keep everyone waiting,” he said while ruffling your hair. You took a deep breath and got up, stretching your legs.
You two were the last ones on the boat and you followed Marco to the deck. The Moby Dick was…immense. You had never seen anything like it. It made the Marine ship you had been on look like a skiff. Marco was waiting next to a rope and wood slatted ladder, motioning for you to climb first. You went up to the ladder, frowned slightly, and made the hand gesture for Fix Fix. Only then did you start to climb the ladder.
“I didn’t think the ladder was broken yoi,” Marco said conversationally while you two were climbing.
“It wasn’t yet. But the rope was deteriorating between the second and third rungs of the ladder. It’s been in use for a while and was getting worn down.”
“But if it wasn’t broken, how did you fix it?”
“Oh, um. I can sense when things need fixing, even if they haven’t completely broken yet. I prefer to fix things before they actually break if I can. Like, I can tell that the screw in the left arm of your glasses is stripped and may fall out soon. It’s an awareness I can tune into. It's really not that interesting. And, um, I can also fix your glasses when we get to the top. If you want.”
Marco laughed and said “Thank you. Such a sweet offer.” Suddenly, he let go of the ladder completely and fell as if in a dive. But before you could blink, he was rising above you in his Pheonix form. You could do nothing but stare. It was absolutely breathtaking. He was the most amazing creature you’d ever seen - or would see -in your life. The rippling blue feathery flames, his golden accents, the elegant way his body soared through the air…He was utterly and completely magnificent. You wanted to watch him fly for hours and you knew you’d still want to see more. He stretched his mighty talons as he flew by. You saw their razor sharp edges and cringed at the thought of being at the wrong end of those weapons.
He landed at the top of the ship, partially transformed himself, and offered you a hand to come over the side of the ship. You were still watching his resplendent form and took his hand. He then changed back completely into a man and said simply “Welcome home.”
You wanted to talk to him about his Phoenix form, but it was hard to focus on any one thing when you were finally aboard the Moby Dick. People were milling about, working, people were calling and waving to Marco, Thatch was already drinking and laughing with Ace…there were so many people moving around, so many things to look at, and your devil fruit was calling for you to fix a million different things. And everything was so…large. You felt like you were a kid again, sitting at a chair that was too big for you and swinging your feet. You didn’t have much time to ponder, because Marco once again put his arm over your shoulders really, a simple tap on the shoulder would do and said “c’mon. Oyaji wants to meet you.”
Marco POV
When you looked up at him at the wharf with your big sad eyes, he almost scooped you into his arms up right there. You needed someone looking after you, and he was ready for a new project. You were like a little wounded bird he could nurse back to health. And just like a wounded bird, once he earned your trust and healed you, you’d be thankful and loyal to him.
When he saw you tucked away, sleeping on the boat? Oh, the things he’d wanted to do to you. You looked so innocent and serene - and calm for once. He loved seeing you at peace, but it brought other thoughts to mind. How would you react to waking up with his head between your luscious thighs, holding them apart, licking and nibbling as a good morning surprise? Would you mewl quietly like a little kitten or would you be loudly moaning his name as you came on his tongue? Would you taste as delicious as you smelled? He knew he’d find out eventually.
He loved how awe struck you looked when you first saw his Pheonix form. Like he was a God come to life. He didn’t feel bad about pulling out all the stops, he knew the kind of impression his Phoenix gave. He wanted you to see how powerful he was and yes, maybe to intimidate you a little bit. A healthy dose of fear might help you remember that might makes right on the seas, and you needed someone like him.
He knew he and the others were touching you a lot and that you didn’t like it. It did break his heart a little to see you flinch every time anyone came near you. But touching you was the first step of making you comfortable with their attention. And he needed you to be very comfortable for the kind of attention he was going to give you.
Y/N POV
Obviously, this was Whitebeard’s ship. You knew that. It wasn’t a surprise. But you just didn’t think through the idea that you would have to actually meet Whitebeard himself. Marco calmly walked you towards the rear of the deck. You were nervous, naturally. You were meeting a Yonko and requesting to be let on his ship, who wouldn’t be? You saw a dais surrounded by nurses wearing pink uniforms…and thigh high leopard boots. They were fussing over the largest man you had ever seen, who was sitting nonchalantly on a regal looking armchair. He was powerful even at rest. You wanted to stop moving closer but Marco still had an arm over your shoulders, so you were propelled along with him.
“Marco, welcome back my son,” boomed Whitebeard. “I hear we have a new child coming on board.” Whitebeard turned his attention to you - it felt like being in the center of a hundred flame dials. You started fidgeting, and Marco patted your shoulder with the hand that was already there. You briefly turned your head to the side and saw that other people had started watching the conversation from the sidelines - making you feel like you were being watched in an arena. It seemed news traveled fast on the ship.
“Thank you Oyaji. We found someone in need of assistance working with Vista’s brothers. She just got her first bounty.”
“GRARARARARA, what did you do, child? Congratulations” laughed Whitebeard.
Still fidgeting - pinching your fingers, you answered “I, um, didn’t do anything. They said I was part of a pirate crew but I’m not. I think they just want me back. I didn’t do anything, um, bad.”
“Well, there’s always time to change that,” Whitebeard remarked with a smile. Even though he was large enough to squish you like a bug, he gave you a warm feeling. You felt comfortable speaking to him, even in front of the growing crowd.
“What’s your name, child?”
“Y/N”
Marco added “she’s also a devil fruit user. She has the Fix Fix fruit. Maybe could help us out if we ask her nicely.”
“Is that so, child?” Whitebeard said to you with an indulgent smile.
“Ah, yes,” you said, gaining a little bit of confidence. “I can fix almost anything. I’ve worked on ships before so I’m familiar with the kind of repairs they usually need. But I’ve never been on a ship like this,” you said gesturing in a motion indicating the ship as a whole.
“GRARARARARARA no one has, child. Welcome aboard.” He tossed his head towards the nurses. “Tate can show you where the women’s quarters are. Settle in, and we’ll celebrate gaining another sibling.”
The crew raised their voices in a raucous cheer, which startled you. You had been focusing so much attention on your interaction with Whitebeard you had almost forgotten they were there.
You were astonished at Whitebeard's words - new sibling? You didn’t know that you were going to stay here on board! Did that mean you were in the crew? Or just that you were allowed to stay? Your head was spinning and you didn’t know what to say, so you said the first thing that popped into your mind.
“Um, thank you Captain Whitebeard. Would you like me to fix your chair?”
You heard Whitebeard laugh again as Marco took his arm off your shoulders and sauntered over to Whitebeard. They started talking in low tones, with Whitebeard laughing intermittently. Tate stepped down off the dais and approached you with a broad smile.
“It’s nice to have another woman on board, Y/N! I'm Tate, the chief nurse on board. Come along with me, I’ll show you where to put your belongings. And as long as we’re going that way, we might as well give you your introductory physical.”
“Physical? Like, a doctor’s visit?”
“Oh yes. Everyone gets one when they first join. It’s standard practice. And you’ve already met the doctor, Marco.”
You gulped - this was not something you had anticipated.
Ok no, no, there is something going on between Kepler and Jacobi. Stand by for my crazed theory, held together by red yarn on a cork board. In episode 55, we get Jacobi confirming ‘I like the men folk’ (so glad you’re a member of the family babes). But this is not the thing that makes me certain there is something going on. Cutter is on the ship, along with a handful of black ops who appear to outrank even Kepler, a messed up Hermes crew and the double edge to his sword, Pryce. Correct me if I’m wrong, some of the first words out of Kepler’s mouth are praise of Jacobi. The minute Cutter says Jacobi is to be taken away, Kepler cuts in with a positive review of Jacobi’s performance,,, *unprompted*. A knee jerk reaction, that I think was a subconscious effort to try and keep Jacobi safe, even if Kepler didn’t 100% intend it that way or realise what he was doing. Could brush it off as ‘Jacobi was his 2nd in command, they worked closely for 6 years, they are incredibly loyal to each other. But the thing that really gets me? The events of dirty work happened barely 24 hours prior to Cutter’s arrival. Jacobi tried to kill Kepler by proxy, less than 24 hours ago. By and large, Kepler, based on all we’ve seen of him, should be throwing Jacobi under the bus immediately. But he does the opposite. He wants Jacobi safe, he wants to make sure Jacobi isn’t punished, he wants to make sure Cutter perceives Jacobi as special and important so that Jacobi is kept around, not brainwashed, not killed. Kepler is working overtime not to save himself, but to save Jacobi. There’s something between them. I swear to god.
Humanity and the Lack Thereof
This essay was co-written between Rani and Viridian; Viridian's text is in green and bracketed.
Humanity is an interesting thing.
I am otherkin. I am nonhuman, a dragon-in-human-skin, draconic to my core. I feel phantom wings and tail, the instinctive knowledge of how to breathe fire even though I don’t understand how it works, a bones-deep longing and homesickness for the sky, numerous instincts and urges tied to being something other than human. Many who are like me reject humanity entirely, don’t feel human at all. And yet, I am also human, deeply and truly. I am just as human as I am dragon - I like my human body, I love the things I can do with it (hands, dexterous hands, are a wonderful thing), I overall enjoy my human life. I am nonhuman, but I am not not human.
Viridian, who is watching “over my shoulder” as I write this, is a vampire. She is a fictive, from one of the Vampire: the Masquerade games that I play in, wherein vampires are typically considered to be… on the boundary line between “human” and “nonhuman.” Many vampires cling to their humanity and adamantly consider themselves human; I would go so far as to say this is the norm. Those who do not often become monstrous indeed, though often they do not.
[ I do not consider myself human. I am Kindred, vampire, Cainite. I am part of humanity, as a general populace - but I do not like being called human.
[ I think part of it is that being human is often put in direct opposition to being vampire as a personal identifier. Those who adamantly insist they are “still human” often mean as opposed to being a vampire instead. Being no longer human is, as Rani wrote, often considered a sign of becoming a monster instead.
[ But I worked hard for my Embrace, my being turned into a vampire. I worked to earn the right to call myself Kindred for nearly a decade. And yes, perhaps some of it is that I was taught by my original sire that the Embrace was an ascension above humanity, and that still colors my feelings on my own vampirism even if I acknowledge that he was wrong to consider us inherently above humans. But much of it is that being called human feels like a denial of my vampirism, a rejection of it, and for me that is not empowering - it is denying and rejecting something deeply important to me. Kindred is who I am. Human was only ever circumstantially true, a circumstance of birth - Kindred was something I actively sought out, pursued, chose. ]
Which is interesting, because to a certain extent, “human” is only circumstantially true for me, too. If I hadn’t been born human, I sincerely doubt I would identify as one in the same way that I identify as a dragon despite not being born into a dragon body. I could be wrong, of course - I have no way to prove it either way - but I suspect that if I am correct about reincarnation and I end up in another body after this one, I will not have the same “spillover” of humanity that I do of draconity from my dragon life.
And yet, I am human, and I actively dislike it when people try to strip that from me. Part of that, admittedly, is that the handful that try to see me as only dragon, and reject that I am human, are usually doing it because they’re violently misanthropic individuals, so it’s soured the whole thing for me because the reason they’re rejecting my humanity is so they can try to get me to shit-talk the rest of humanity with them. (If I have to hear one more dragon legitimately, whole-heartedly say that they think humanity should be extincted, I’m going to lose it.) But part of it is that my humanity is important to me, just as important as my draconity. I am both. I’ve written whole essays on this topic.
[ In that way, perhaps we’re not so different after all. I dislike being called human because it feels like a rejection of who I am, who I chose to be; you dislike being called not-human because it is a rejection of who you are. ]
Maybe so. Funny how different societal circumstances can yield opposite results from the same kind of pressures.
I think that part of the discrepancy between us is also that I’m a very physical person. Frankly, I am a chemical creature; I enjoy physicality, I enjoy affectionate touch, I enjoy the physical pleasures life has to offer. I enjoy food. I enjoy sexual pleasure. I enjoy the exhilaration of getting my heart going and my instincts fired up in a self-defense class. I live, I live, I live! is ever a cry of joy in my heart. And a lot of that ties into my animality! I am a dragon animal, yes, but I am also a human animal, and both of these things must be satisfied! The dragon yearns for the wind and the view when I climb up to a height, for the fire of battle I can get out of a sparring match; the human yearns for the taste of sun-warm berries right off the bush, for the warm press of bodies when I hug and cuddle with loved ones. Both of them love a good nap in the sun. I am a physical creature, I am an animal, and my animal-ness connects me to my body and thus to my humanity, rather than separating me from it.
[ Meanwhile, none of this has ever been true for me. Yes, of course I enjoy certain delicacies; I miss my brother’s cookies periodically, it’s true. But I’ve never loved these things the way Rani does. It’s not that I dislike the pleasures of life, but I’ve just… never really cared. It wasn’t much of a loss when I was Embraced, to trade food and sunlight and heartbeat for immortality and knowledge and power. It was almost convenient to not have to deal with the maintenance a living body requires - no excretion of waste, no inconvenient aches or pains or stomach cramps, a frankly much more manageable frequency of requiring sustenance. My body is just a tool, and the Embrace made it more efficient in most ways. And now, after twenty-three years of being dead, being in a living body again is overwhelming in some ways and just downright unpleasant in others. Even most of the physical matters Rani actively enjoys are either overwhelming or uninteresting for me. I am happy to leave the care and maintenance of the body to them. It’s not necessarily that I actively had a disconnect from my human body, originally, so much as that I didn’t have an active connection to it to make me identify with it, and thus my being “human” was, as I said, only ever circumstantial. My becoming Kindred overrode it, and I prefer to leave it that way.
[ Ironic, that the one whose nonhumanity is so human-shaped should be the one to reject humanity, but here we are. ]
Here we are.
Good post but friendly reminder to new users that tumblr has no “algorithm” so unless you see that a post was actively taken down or restricted, it’s likely that people just…aren’t reblogging it. Remember that tags aren’t how we find posts here, they’re how we sort and file them within our own blogs. It takes a while to build a following here
