So, fun fact, most of the army that conquered the Aztecs were actually made up of other peoples in Mexico who decided they hated the Aztecs more than the newly arrived Spanish

I can't draw but my Redwall OC is Don Salvador, an enormous plate armoured plague rat. After a wicked life of pillage, he is cured of the plague by a vision of Martin the Warrior and guided to the abbey, where he redeems himself by taking up his huge zweihander in defence of the innocent (perhaps from his former partners in crime.). After Redwall is saved, Salvador hangs up his sword to become a quiet, jolly friar, his pockmarked visage and hints of an old mercenary life serving only to ward light-fingered dibbuns from his scones.

Vasco Núñez de Balboa
Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1475-1519) was a Spanish conquistador who famously discovered the Pacific Ocean after crossing the isthmus of Panama in 1513. An utterly ruthless adventurer and colonizer, Balboa was as much a danger to his fellow conquistadors as he was to the indigenous peoples he came across.
Balboa helped establish the town of Darién, the first permanent Spanish settlement on the American mainland. Extracting gold from Panama and instituting slavery and forced labour to work on plantations, Balboa was ultimately outwitted by a Spanish rival who had him tried and executed for treason.
Early Life
Vasco Núñez de Balboa was born in Extramadura in Spain in the small village of Jerez de los Caballeros in the province of Badajoz. His family belonged to the minor nobility. In 1500-1, Balboa joined the expedition of Rodrigo de Bastidas (1460-1526), which hoped to find pearls along the northern coast of South America (present-day Colombia), then a virtually unknown region to the Europeans. The expedition was a success in charting new coastlines but did not find many of the hoped-for pearls. Balboa next settled on Hispaniola (modern Haiti/Dominican Republic), where he owned a plantation, but his business sense was poor, and he was obliged to abandon the island after he racked up huge debts.

I found this amazing lamp yesterday. It had some damage so I took it down to the studio and started with a layer of black and then spent some time matching the colors. I wish I had taken more pictures because there were spots on the back side as well. Anyway, I think it turned out 👌👌👌.

Indigenous Hawaiians really had a good system going: wake up reaaally early and do most of the days work while it's cool and by the time the sun was up and it got hot the work was done and you're free to surf and socialize. I wish the white people realized they themselves could work smarter and not harder and get time to relax. Instead of calling Hawaiians lazy (and being genocidal about it)
#Ik this happened in most if not all tropical regions that got colonized#they were so pissed that these 'lazy' people got all sorts of fruit and natural bounty 'handed to them'#when those indigenous people were just working before the colonizers woke up and felt no need to kill themselves in midday heat#Which is what's natural for an apex predator: lazing around#Like u see lions in big cuddle puddles during the hottest part of the day. And they have the privilege of laziness by being the top predato#Idk if lions have a specific time they hunt but ik they will hunt at night when people can't observe them#Also Europeans failed to recognize indigenous agriculture and the /purposeful / cultivation of helpful plants (done w/out clearing the land#And even if they were only foraging. Like. If you love the earth and care for it (and not clear it) the earth will love you back idk#Gah! It's just like we coulda eradicated capitalism in its cradle if Euroamericans werent so arrogant and sure their way of life was correc#Like what if they were explorers and not conquistadors and colonizers. And there was a true cultural exchange#Would it have been better if the Europeans never crossed the ocean (even if they weren't there to colonize)? yeah probably#Like while the disease thing wasn't on purpose (initially) Europeans did inadvertently kill a lot of people bc they had no immunity#But I also acknowledge the human desire to explore and see what's out there#But I wish it was like#Europeans: here's some horses and metal tools#Indigenous people: thanks. Here's a way of life more in harmony with nature and an understanding that we're part of the ecosystem#Europeans: oh cool let me bring these ideas back to Europe. Maybe we won't deforest all of England#(I say Europeans but eventually when Canada and America became independent entities they also were responsible for these things)#Capitalism#capitalism is hell#anti capitalism#Colonization#colonialism#colonial violence#Imperialism#conquistador#age of exploration#anti colonialism#anti colonization#hawaiʻi

I got this Conquistadwarf from eBay a long while back. The seller doesn’t appear to exist anymore and I can’t find who originally modelled it.
If you recognise the sculpt let me know, the quality of the print doesn’t really bother me but I imagine some of the detail is lost so I would like to get a better one.

Journey of Honour / Kabuto (1991)
Mayeda (Sho Kosugi) is a loyal retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toshiro Mifune) who won the Battle of Sekigahara. Unforunately, he lost his wife and son during the battle, as they were trying to protect the son of Tokugawa, Yorimune (Kane Kosugi) from enemy capture.
Tokugawa sense that a new war is approaching and sends Mayeda with Yorimune to Spain to acquire more muskets from King Philip III (Christopher Lee), much to the agitation of a Spanish Lord, Pedro (David Essex), who doesn't want to sell weapons to non-believers.
It makes matters worse, when his to soon to be wife, an English Princess, Cecilia (Polly Walker) is intrigued by Mayeda. She wants to escape the arranged marriage and travel to the East with Mayeda to Japan but Mayeda is torn between her and his duty to the Shogun.
youtube
After watching Shogun 2024, I want them to remake this movie! It's set around the same period where the Catholic Spanish and Portuguese are taking a strong interest in Asia, and Japan itself. Would be cool to see a Samurai and a Conquistador duel!
