Bassist Herbie Flowers has died, age 86.
He provided the signature double-tracked bass for “Rock On,” one of the coolest songs of the early ‘70s. He, similarly, provided double-tracked bass for a tune that should be enshrined in the bassline pantheon:
youtube
On “Walk on the Wild Side,” he said in an interview with the BBC, “Where the double bass would do a glissando downwards, the bass guitar would do a glissando upwards.”
Despite earning twice the standard session fee for his double-tracked contribution to “Rock On,” he received all of £24 for his work. For “Walk on the Wild Side,” he received £17. Take from that what you will about the equity of the music industry.
He also played on seminal albums by David Bowie, Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Harry Nilsson, Cat Steven’s, and Melanie, along with anchoring the rhythm section in the last lineup of T. Rex.

Journey of Honour / Kabuto (1991)
Mayeda (Sho Kosugi) is a loyal retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toshiro Mifune) who won the Battle of Sekigahara. Unforunately, he lost his wife and son during the battle, as they were trying to protect the son of Tokugawa, Yorimune (Kane Kosugi) from enemy capture.
Tokugawa sense that a new war is approaching and sends Mayeda with Yorimune to Spain to acquire more muskets from King Philip III (Christopher Lee), much to the agitation of a Spanish Lord, Pedro (David Essex), who doesn't want to sell weapons to non-believers.
It makes matters worse, when his to soon to be wife, an English Princess, Cecilia (Polly Walker) is intrigued by Mayeda. She wants to escape the arranged marriage and travel to the East with Mayeda to Japan but Mayeda is torn between her and his duty to the Shogun.
youtube
After watching Shogun 2024, I want them to remake this movie! It's set around the same period where the Catholic Spanish and Portuguese are taking a strong interest in Asia, and Japan itself. Would be cool to see a Samurai and a Conquistador duel!

Chris Andrews SONG OF THE WEEK “You Won’t Be Seeing Me Anymore” by Tim Andrews w/Gordon Haskell https://timchrisandrews.bandcamp.com/track/you-wont-be-seeing-me-anymore  The late musician Gordon Haskell was often noted for his role in an early incarnation of King Crimson. However, beyond that he was a prolific singer-songwriter who, after years as a “starving folksinger,” found success in the 90s with the hit single “How Wonderful You Are” and the platinum album HARRY’S BAR. Before all those successes he worked with Chris Andrews (a.k.a. Tim Andrews) in the “freakbeat” band Fleur de Lys, springboard for the careers of Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship) and guitar hero Bryn Haworth.
In 1967 Gordon wrote and played bass and guitar on “You Won’t Be Seeing Me Anymore.” The track was recorded in London, but it has a folk-pop California sound that could’ve come from Laurel Canyon or San Francisco. On a cosmic jukebox this would play next to It’s A Beautiful Day (“White Bird”) and Love. The lyrics are aboutseasonal love, coming from a young man who travels for a long time and leaves his troubled sweetheart behind.
The track was produced by Paul Clay (Ace Kefford, Sharon Tandy, early Yes) and Mike Noble (Joan Armatrading, Fleur de Lys, John Kongos). It was the B-side of “Sad Simon Lives Again,” Tim’s first solo single after he’d signed with renowned producer, promoter, and music executive Tony Hall (who’d plugged The Beatles, Carmen McRae, and inked Black Sabbath’s first record deal). Tim later reverted to his real name Chris and went on as a solo act and a collaborator with Roger Daltrey, David Essex, and Davy Jones (Monkees). Meanwhile, enjoy this rare track:

Remembering Screamin' Scott Simon and Herbie Flowers
Sad weekend for music fans, specifically 70s music fans. Here is my combined remembrance:
Remembering Screamin' Scott Simon 1948-2024
Musician Screamin' Scott Simon has died at 75. He was the pianist for Sha Na Na from 1970 to 2022. The doo wop revival group were known for their variety TV show Sha Na Na (Syndicated 1977-1981). I remember watching it as a kid and getting a kick out of it. The group also appeared in the 50s-set movie musical Grease. Simon himself actually co-wrote the song "Sandy" that John Travolta sings in the film.

In 1972, John Lennon and Yoko Ono invited Sha Na Na to be a part of their One-To-One benefit concert at Madison Square Garden. It also needs to be added that a young Bruce Springsteen opened for Sha Na Na in the early 70s.
Sha Na Na played Woodstock in 1969. While that concert was the year before Simon joined, some reports have him listed as appearing with the band at the legendary music festival.

Remembering Herbie Flowers 1938-2024
Musician Herbie Flowers has died at 86. He was the bassist on hundreds of recordings. He was the bassist for T. Rex from 1976-77. Some of the legendary songs he played on included David Essex's "Rock On", David Bowie's "Space Oddity", Nilsson's "Coconut", and Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side". Wow! That alone makes him legendary!

Flowers with Bowie and Marc Bolan
He played on multiple solo Beatle albums as well: George Harrison's Somewhere in England (that's him on "All Those Years Ago"), Gone Troppo and the posthumous Brainwashed; Ringo Starr's Stop and Smell the Roses; and Paul McCartney's Give My Regards to Broad Street. Quite a discography indeed!
