5 Unforgettable Congolese books To Deepen Your Understanding Of The Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a massive country with a long and fascinating history. For outsiders, it can be a bit of a mystery. The DRC is a land of vibrant cultures, but it also has a dark past marked by brutal colonialism. Political unrest and incredible natural resources are just some of the other things that make up this complex nation.
If you want to learn more about the DRC, there’s no better place to start than with a good book. Here are five that will shed light on different aspects of the country’s story.
These five books are just a taste of the amazing literature that can help you understand the DRC. Here are some other ways to dive deeper:
Read books by Congolese authors: Writers like Sony Labou Tansi, Alain Mabanckou, and Emmanuel Dongala offer unique perspectives that come straight from the DRC.
Go beyond fiction: Books like “Congo: The Epic History of a People” by David Van Reybrouck or “Higher Ground in the Congo” by Jason Stearns offer detailed historical and political analysis.
Travel the world (on paper): Redmond O’Hanlon’s “Congo Journey” is a funny and thought-provoking account of a trip down the Congo River.
By exploring the DRC through the eyes of different people, you’ll gain a much richer understanding of its past, present, and future. Remember, reading isn’t just about memorizing facts. It’s about connecting with human stories, building empathy, and maybe even inspiring you to take action.
So, why not turn the page and start your own literary journey into the Democratic Republic of the Congo?

To anyone interested in learning about Artsakh, its history and the struggle of Artsakhi Armenians for freedom and self determination, I suggest checking out Learn For Artsakh initiative (@/learn4artsakh on Instagram). They share a lot of information on these topics and spotlight the interconnection of violence inflicted on the indigenous groups in the region by the colonizing powers.
They also have an e-library with free pdfs of many books written by Armenians about Artsakh as well as literature about DR Congo, Sudan, Palestine and other nations experiencing genocide (scroll down to the "Libraries Against Genocide" section).

book about resource extraction in the drc published in 2011 trying to say "activists' focus on the congo as a source of conflict minerals is overblown bc they only supply 5% of world total" and "it's disingenuous to point at consumer electronics and say they're soaked in blood when they have a very small chance of containing minerals from the congo" well ok. consider: 1) in the intervening 13 years the amount of coltan supplied by the drc did not stay at 5% but in fact has risen dramatically (and also it is notoriously difficult to track how much the drc is actually exporting, and how much of, say, rwanda's reported production originates in the congo), and 2) how interesting. is the drc the only place in which rare earth minerals are extracted under inhumane conditions? perhaps ppl criticizing what goes into consumer electronics are not in fact meaning to suggest they would be just fine if they contained no minerals from the congo. perhaps it is ALSO bad when ppl in southeast asia or latin america or in fact, anywhere, are ruthlessly exploited so that you and i can have new cellphones and electric cars

Always remember oppressors never take a day off.
While we are focused on….
- Israel committing genocide and being antisemitic against the people of Palestine.
- Israel being antisemitic against Jews against genocide and war. “Not in my name!”
- The silent genocide in Congo and Sudan.
Our governments continue forward chipping away at the rights of their citizens.
Keep an eye on your local government & elections. Sometimes they start small and spread to like cancer.
Look at Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. It feels like they are competing to see who can be the worst.
Remember U.S. lobbyists (christian, conservative, and republican) go out of their way to help construct other countries' anti-LGBTQ+ coalitions and policies/laws.
History in real-time is being rewritten.
Jews across the world and their allies are saying they are anti-war, against Israel’s apartheid state, against Israel’s genocide, condemn Hamas’ attack on Oct 7, condemn Israel’s attack on April 1st, and want a ceasefire. A ceasefire for the exchange hostages taken by Israel and hostages taken by Hamas, but news media, propaganda rags, companies, and government officials are spewing lies about them. Twisting their stands.

RE READ Babel just now and still wondering why this book has not had the world by a chokehold when it came out and ESPECIALLY now during a Genocide, when the descendant shadows and monsters of colonialism linger on and take the form of zionazi bodies with their claws deep in the Land of Palestine and the Empire remains now in a different flavor of whiteness, in Sudan, the Congo and Tigray, In Kashmir, in Burma, in Turtle Island, In Uighur/East Turkistan and Kalaallit Nunaat and Hawaii. In the hearts and lineages of all the colonized people and their children.
May we all learn, embrace and resist. Violent if it must be, for valid it is.
The struggle to decolonization continues.

We live in a time where entertainment (Even that which finances a war criminal) is more important than the lives of civilians…
By the way, Tara Strong is a Zionist and attacked indie animators spreading propaganda that she was fired for being Jewish, not for her racist tweet towards Palestinians…
Let's not forget about the crime of this woman, and the creator of the podcast turned off the comments (Because there was a podcast, we know that Tara Strong was making a victim out of herself, a typical Zionist), because people reacted correctly to what she said
Yes, I had to remind her about her, although the post was supposed to refer to Disney and the Olympics, I have the impression that no one talks about Tara Strong's crime anymore, and she should be remembered for being a bigot, which led to bullying indie creators…
