5 Unforgettable Congolese books To Deepen Your Understanding Of The Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a massive country with a long and fascinating history. For outsiders, it can be a bit of a mystery. The DRC is a land of vibrant cultures, but it also has a dark past marked by brutal colonialism. Political unrest and incredible natural resources are just some of the other things that make up this complex nation.
If you want to learn more about the DRC, there’s no better place to start than with a good book. Here are five that will shed light on different aspects of the country’s story.
These five books are just a taste of the amazing literature that can help you understand the DRC. Here are some other ways to dive deeper:
Read books by Congolese authors: Writers like Sony Labou Tansi, Alain Mabanckou, and Emmanuel Dongala offer unique perspectives that come straight from the DRC.
Go beyond fiction: Books like “Congo: The Epic History of a People” by David Van Reybrouck or “Higher Ground in the Congo” by Jason Stearns offer detailed historical and political analysis.
Travel the world (on paper): Redmond O’Hanlon’s “Congo Journey” is a funny and thought-provoking account of a trip down the Congo River.
By exploring the DRC through the eyes of different people, you’ll gain a much richer understanding of its past, present, and future. Remember, reading isn’t just about memorizing facts. It’s about connecting with human stories, building empathy, and maybe even inspiring you to take action.
So, why not turn the page and start your own literary journey into the Democratic Republic of the Congo?

it really is mind-boggling to me that the only reason i know about the Congolese and Sudanese genocides is because of the tireless work of grassroots activists and advocates posting on social media. I can honestly say that if I didn't have social media and didn't happen to be following Black authors and activists, I never would have known what was happening in Sudan and Congo because it is simply not being reported in the great majority of mainstream media. We're talking millions upon millions of PEOPLE enduring unimaginable pain and devastation with next to no official reporting. And yes that is in huge part due to the level of violence and displacement occurring that is preventing a lot of news from getting out of these countries, but it's also so blatantly due to anti-Black racism and the perception of African Nations as inherently savage and violent. But genocide is not and never should be normal for anyone anywhere. With that in mind, please keep Congo and Sudan in your thoughts. Check out Focus Congo for resources to help the Congolese people on the ground. Focus Congo's MO is a local organisation whose goal is to rebuild homes, rehabilitate land, and provide medical aid, education, and resources to Congo's most affected people. Also, Check out Keep Eyes On Sudan for how to help out and raise awareness of Sudanese people displaced by civil war. According to Sudanese TikToker bsonblast, donations to local food kitchens in Sudan are desperately needed to fight famine. If anyone has other resources specifically for helping Congo and Sudan, please add them and link them <3

Sapeurs: Ladies and Gentlemen of the Congo
Tariq Zaidi
Kehrer Verlag, 2020 - 175 pages
British photographer Tariq Zaidi presents a fashion subculture of Kinshasa & Brazzaville: La Sape, Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes ("Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People"). Its followers are known as Sapeurs (Sapeuses for women). Most have ordinary day jobs as taxi-drivers, tailors and gardeners, but as soon as they clock off they transform themselves into debonair dandies. Sashaying through the streets they are treated like rock stars - turning heads, bringing 'joie de vivre' to their communities and defying their circumstances. Traditionally passed down through the male line, many Congolese women and their children have recently begun donning designer suits.
As Papa Wemba (1949-2016, Congolese singer and fashion icon who popularized Sape) once said: White people invented the clothes, but we make an art of it.

shoutout to my 5 year old computer I write fics on. do you sometimes have times when you become unresponsive for 10 minutes, conveniently right when I start to get in the writing mood? sure. we all do. Do you become VERY slow if I have more than 5 tabs open? guaranteed. are you the same computer I did COVID schooling on, so I’ll never get rid of you no matter what because of the memories? yes. unfortunately, yes. A MacBook will never compare to the bookmarked tabs of little me.

@refugees
The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has warned of a growing humanitarian catastrophe in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where fighting between government forces and armed groups has caused hundreds of thousands of people to flee.
The mining in the Province of North Kivu Province is mainly for gold, cassiterite, coltan, diamonds, tourmaline, pyrochlore.
Humanitarians estimate that there are now more than 300,000 displaced people in Goma. Anne-Sylvie Linder says, “Some of them are at Bulengo or Lac Vert – where a site was prepared – as well as Rusayo, an outlying district in Goma where authorities have made several acres available. The Lac Vert site nevertheless poses a significant risk to the people there because of the potential for the release of dangerous methane gas. (ICRC.org)

ive been wanting to do some redraws of the gravity falls art i made as a kid n since it's seasonally appropriate, here's some magician au doodles ^^
and just in case i don't come back to draw it again any time soon here's my thoughts so far on the topic and the original art circa smn like. idk maybe 2015 or 2016?? i wish i'd put the date on anything from back then lol
Palestine: Funds | Action | eSims | Info
Sudan Resources | Congo Resource | Lebanese Red Cross
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i might change the designs later on but at this point i thought it'd be most fun to just kinda leave it really close to the originals :3
anyways!!
okay so gravity falls magician au. plotwise it's all actually about the same, the twins might be a little older actually, like 15 or 16 (maybe they've visited gravity falls in the past?), but whatever. they get sent to a sleepy little village in the woods to stay w their great uncle. magic runs in the pines family, although no currently living pines is thought to have any notable capability. healing a scratch or finding something u lost under ur bed, basically. magic is actually probably a lot more common and mundane in this world than canon, so gravity falls' weirdness as a region comes more from the intensity and unpredictable nature of the magic found there
anyways the BIGGEST plot difference is that i like the idea of the kids meeting bill pretty early on. he introduces himself as a seasoned familiar looking to get back in touch with his old partner. now, bill is a breath of fresh air for dipper in particular, who finally has someone he can speak frankly with about the weird experiences he's been having, but even tho bill loves nothing more than spilling secrets and arcane knowledge, he's not really able to do so as he'd like to. he's got TONS of spells placed on him for the express purpose of keeping him quiet, but there's a few things bill has been able to elude to if nothing else: 1, he knows who the author of the grimoire dipper found in the woods is. 2, he knows stan pines' great secret. and 3, he knows how to access magical power beyond comprehension
hehe idk i just like the idea of bill spending possibly months mentoring and making friends w the kids fully planning on just using them for his own gain the entire time but. well. maybe it's nice not being alone anymore too. tho he'd never admit it

Reminder that Suzanne Collin’s didn’t “predict” anything she wrote in the Hunger Games trilogy becoming a reality. All literature, all art, is social commentary. These humanitarian crises are not new, they’ve been happening. Suzanne Collin’s and other authors, only wrote what they’ve observed happen in real life and applied it to a fictional setting.
All eyes on Rafah! Free Palestine, Congo, Sudan, and every other nation/population that has been a victim of genocide, imperialism, war crimes, and oppression.
Enjoy fiction but keep spreading the stories of real tragedies that push authors to turn to a creative medium.
***also you cannot be a Hunger Games fan if you are pro-Israel (“isn’t-real”)
