You know what really gets me about Eleven’s run? Is that it starts off with an amazing thesis statement in the Beast Below which I think sums up the Doctor as a character more than any other line ever has. "What if you were really old, and really kind, and the last of your kind?...All of that pain and misery and loneliness, and it just made it kind."
Yes, sometimes the Doctor needs to be reminded of that fact, as when Amy has Liz 10 hit the abdication button, but the Doctor is kind. He is the man that cheered that "just this once, everyone lives" and was a "coward not killer anyday" and flung away a gun and even after the Time Lord Victorious arc, died to save a single man from dying from radiation. The Doctor and his companions bring out the worst in each other, yes, but they also bring out the best.
And then comes along The Girl Who Waited and the God Complex, which are just an extension of Let's Kill Hitler and eventually Angels Take Manhattan, which are all about how the Doctor takes people as companions because he needs someone to worship him, that he can't bear to see them age and would rather see them young and beautiful, that he is vain, that he is cruel, that he is a god, and I get that interpretation but at the end of the day, the Doctor has never been about vanity or worship or needing someone to keep him in check.
Because yes, companions have reminded him the importance of being kind as part of what is "necessary." The importance of having hope. But it's just that: a reminder. The Doctor is unlike the Master and unlike the rest of the Time Lords because he is compassionate. Because he hates to see children cry. Because he is a coward who is nonetheless brave enough to keep caring, over and over again, no matter how many people die in front of him, no matter how many times he loses those he loves, because the Doctor is a love story as much as it is a ghost story at the end of the day.
And it kills me that the main themes/character arcs of Eleven’s era boil down the Doctor to someone who is not that. Someone who, as the Power of Three ending/Angels Take Manhattan imply, had to have the Ponds to keep him in check. That he could not let them go, could not respect them and their choices like Ten did with Martha. That an entire religion formed itself, kidnapping a child and making her into an assassin, just to stop him from ruining the universe, because he is a god more than a man. That he is a god just like the minotaur, feeding off of people's faith in him, taking children and companions so that he can be nourished, so that he can feel important.
Because even at the Doctor's worst in the Time Lord Victorious Arc, it has never been about worship. It was about grief and loss and love and compassion, because the Doctor has two hearts because he has too much love to fill just one, because that is the kind of person that the Doctor is.
All of that pain and misery and loneliness, and it just made him kind.

Never been a fan of people trying to shape the Golden Order into conservative Christianity. Reading fics where they talk about women needing to be "traditional" or seen but not heard, when the figurehead of the Order is a woman who has waged loads of wars, had two husbands, makes a point of examining her faith rather than submissively accepting it. Seeing posts that seem to say the GO is villainizing the use of sorcery, a way of deriding the carians, when one of the greatest champions of the Order himself studied sorcery of his own volition, and married perhaps the greatest sorceress ever known. There's nothing to indicate the GO ever had a beef with the practice of sorcery, and it's not like they shuttered Raya Lucaria after the union of the Moon and Erdtree. Cringing every time someone describes Fundamentalism as the "thoughtless extremist" wing of the Order when it's supposed to be about taking a scholarly approach to the examination of the laws of causality and regression.
Idk. It's just, there's so many reasons to be skeeved out by the GO, and it exists within a fantasy with a totally distinct history from our own world. While there are obviously influences from a wide variety of real-world sources on the mythology and world of the game, it's not a direct copy of reality. It's lame to see sth so full of opportunity for interesting world building from fans just turned into a watered down copy of what they despise in reality.

Talking about BEAST Atsushi x Canon Akutagawa is so funny because the only thought that went through my head is how much of a hell pair they would be if they meet. It’s very much the epitome of “Cares Too Much” x “Couldn’t Care Enough” if you personified them
BEAST Atsushi breaking down, never having a good day in his life: H
Canon Akutagawa, Joey Diaz voice with the American Anthem in the background: Get up cocksucker, it’s all over. Listen we had a rough couple of months but we got work to do—
WHO'S THE ONE WHO COULDN'T CARE ENOUGH

Something that really bothers me about the rose coloured glasses vis a vis tellius and fe fans (ESPECIALLY from 3h fans who learned about tellius later) is that many like soren purely because of his main ship (i mean i like ikesoren too but come the fuck on) and jokingly characterise soren as a stereotypical nasty mean limp wristed sarcastic gay man instead of a deeply flawed branded angry at the world and definitely trauma bonded to ike, but micaiah is still absolutely getting raked over the coals over the blood pact and not being ike’s fangirl
Well,
Jokes often involve flanderisation, so Soren being flanderised to oblivion when people joke about him isn't something I really care about, but maybe that's because I'm not really fond of Soren to begin with lol
What annoys me more is when some people try to rationalise Soren's anger and backstory by either pointing at Almedha or Deghinsea being responsible for everything, and I'm like, what.the.fuck?
Almedha's just, idk, I won't call it sexism, but damn - that woman loves her son who is the only reason why she hasn't completely lost her mind over 1/losing her powers 2/being casted away like trash by her "BF" 3/being rejected by her dad 4/thinking her brother was tortured and abused to death because of her actions 5/being separated from her beloved child.
Deghinsea being "uwu bad bcs he's the reason why brandeds are rejected by both beorcs and laguz" is another take I really am not fond of, and iirc I wrote a post earlier this year about it? But to some people who buy the "Crusts BaD" as the reason why Fodlan sucks, I guess they need to have someone to name and pill all of the world's nonsense rather than, well, in Tellius' case, realise that the worldbulding and the lore really sucks, to the point where the duology touted as the most "against racism" of the franchise, is pretty much way more racist than anything Tru Piss can throw us (yes, because in Tru Piss we have characters rejecting coexistence, in Tellius, it's the world mechanics - whenever a Beorc and a Laguz coexist too much, the Laguz dies...).
As for Miccy,
Just like, imo, Soren gains some "new" attention and "uwu excuses for why he's being a snarky jerk at times", Miccy used to be bashed when FE10 was released (with all the Mary Sue accusation being thrown around!) because she was written to be a sort of foil/antagonist to Ike, and when the party reunited, she was demoted to a "soul-jar" role, let it be regarding the greater plot, or, even, her own backstory!
TBH, for people who didn't play FE10, if Ike is the bestest thing since melted cheese, Miccy, who opposes him, must be BaD and so you can pile everything you don't like on her, hoping to see it stick.
Or even worse, I've seen posts here and there comparing Miccy to Supreme Leader and how misunderstood uwu she is, which is the worst insult poor Miccy ever received since FE10 came out rofl
#2goldensnitches#do you want to kill me friend lol#once upon a time discussions about soren and miccy were very animated lol#anyways i still don't like how some part of the fandom tries to uwu him#he is a character with flaws that sure are never called out in the game and by the main character but#they exist#and to uwu them away is imo a disservice and not a good reading on him#'but his backstory sad uwus' Sephiran also has a crapton of sad uwus for his backstory#and yet the game chews him out about his plans to destroy the world because hey fuck off#it's not fair to condemn the world and everyone who lives in it for your suffering#It's sort of hilarious because sometimes I wonder if Miccy wasn't also written as a Soren foil#Miccy is the one who doesn't like when Beorc call Laguz names#she lives in racist land and knows she has to hide else she'll die too#but she still came to care about the people who live here#she gets to talk to Vika who feels weirded out by her being a branded and yet they agree to continue talking/being friends despite it#Miccy never insults Rafiel calling him a half beast#Soren follows Ike and his lead but Miccy has to take the lead despite wanting to follow Pelleas at first#tfw we know more about Soren's backstory even after being kicked away from Daein than Miccy's lol#granted I loved what FE10 with Almedha when you see that some of his worst traits/flaws are actually shared by his mom lol#tl;dr : a Soren raised by his mom would have been even more of a jerk than the one we got#i have a lot of feelings about how Miccy was treated in FE10 which in turn sort of explains the vitriol she received from the fandom#but that's for another post lol else it'll be too long#basically FE10 is more Ike v.2 than a game where Miccy is the Lord

And the reason I don't like warden vs Hawke decision is that it has no repercussions. You can pick the "x died be respectful" in a convo with Dorian and just hug Varric. One minute later you're just walking around Skyhold as if nothing happened
I'm sorry, you just left in the Fade one of the most valued wardens / a champion of the people. Why isn't there someone throwing a big scene in my courtyard? This is a decision that affects other people heavily
Shock value is the worst

This has no relevance to anything either of us have talked about recently but I have very strong opinions about disney princesses and how too many women view the movies and the princesses themselves in a negative light and normally use "feminism" for rather anti-women beliefs.
First up, sleeping beauty, which is one of my top 3 Disney princess movies. Many people make two points about it - The belief that Aurora has no personality and the fact she was kissed without her consent. The first one is very untrue because we see her act playful and good natured in the "I Know You" song, and her other major scene she is just void because she is under mind control. The second fact, while he didn't have her consent, Prince Philip did know that true loves kiss breaks the spell, which in fantasy world, is just magical CPR. Also, they previously had chemistry and she was down bad.
Cinderella, many people point out that she had to have a man save, which... okay? Cinderella wanted one good night, that was her goal and gaining the attention of the prince was a plus. She then went back home to a horrible environment where she had no feasible means to escape by herself. Someone saving her was necessary and it being a man is alright.
Ariel is another one who gets pointed out on having her life revolve around a man, and it honestly doesn't. She wanted to be where they walk, up where they run, up they spend all day in the sun, Ursula was the person who made it about a man, Arial just wanted legs. To add to that, she previously saw the prince save people on a burning ship and found him hot. Essentially, she wanted to explore a foreign country and fell for the equivalent of a hot firefighter, as we all would.
Beauty and the Beast is said to be stockholme syndrome over and over, but in all honesty, it isn't. Sure, if a person has never had an introduction to stolkholme syndrome, you start there, but truly, that wasn't the case. It was forced closeness, if anything, and Belle only started falling when Beast changed and grew as a person. She didn't fall in love with the same Beast that locked her up, but a changed man. One who lets her go.
This is just a personal pet peeve of mine, especially because I know how much worse in regards to women some of the original tales are. (Oddly enough, Beauty and the Beast has some rather good origins in a lot of stories)
I FUCKING LOVE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST… obviously… it’s *me*.
And whilst I get the point of people stating that the reliance on the man saves damsel trope is… icky, I do think people fail to look past it often. Especially in cases where Man is damsel, woman saves him. As is the case in The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the beast and idk i need to rewatch a lot of Disney so apologies if it’s present in more.
Do I think that it’s without criticism? Or course not! But it’s not what everyone thinks it is.
At the end of the day, these are not Disney-original stories. At least the older ones. They’re child-friendly adaptations of darker tales that intended to make them palatable to the audience of the time. Informed by misogyny, sure, but not inherently misogynistic.
I don’t understand why we have to equate being saved, romantic and feminine to being weak. I love romantic and feminine women who need a helping hand once in a while.
It’s just breeding little girls who don’t get help when they need it. We need to show a healthy relationship between independence and dependence, which I don’t think as many Disney movies fail at as people think.

Okay the gold foil on Grand Master of Demonic Cultivation did not like my night lighting situation lol, but here is today’s B&N haul! 😊
Very excited to read these, though I have been saving all 4 volumes of Neighborhood Story until they were all out so I won’t get to this volume for a little while longer.

at this point the only way to get Mr Beast canceled would be to have him exposed harming animals, because that's the only leverage to trigger White people's empathy if we're being honest
His main audience are 13-20 years old White males who never worked, so all those accusations of overworking, unsafe work space, or women testimonies of being sexual harassed on their workplace isn't relatable to them
BUT I'm pretty sure most of these moids have dogs or cats so learning about Jimmy harming one may definitely be a more reliable leverage to make them cancel him for good

Classic Who explores ideas, New Who explores morals
classic who is like 'i see this trend, lets explore what might happen if that trend continues and let the audience figure out what it's talking about and come to their own conclusions.'
new who is like 'this trend is BAD and i'm going to PREACH A SPEECH about why it's going to RUIN EVERYTHING' and it's so much more exhausting
#wren rambles#doctor who#this brought on by me watching orphan 55#which had SUCH a fun concept#and then absolutely FACEPLANTED with the doctor moralizing at the end#like yes doctor who has ALWAYS explored topical and political issues#but never is there a definitive I Am Telling You This Is Right message#whereas now I just had to sit here and watch 13 preaching at me?#ughghg#explore the idea but don't shove it down my throat#classic who had an episode (Ice Warriors) exploring climate change as one aspect of the story#talking about how all the plants were removed and that messed with the atmosphere etc.#but that was just a SMALL PART of the whole episode and it was never outright condemned (it was made clear it was BAD and the root problems#but that was never the BIG ISSUE the Doctor Lectured His Companions about) (not that victoria or jamie could do anything lol)#plus this feeds into my issues with 13's run (which started during 12's somewhat but less so)#where the Doctor is painted as the Narratively Right one#where when she says something that's what the narrative wants you to BELIEVE#which coming from Two and Three's run is WILD#because Two is chaotic and murderous when he thinks he's right#and he's manipulative and deceptive at times#and Three is selfish and pouty and rude#and don't get me wrong Thirteen has her issues and I lvoe them#HOWEVER. she's pretty much always RIGHT she's the Word Of God when it comes to moral things#and this more than anything is my biggest issues with Modern Who#mostly 12 and 13's eras#so i hope we move out of that somewhat in the new era but i'm not super holding up hopes (especially after star beast)#maybe one day i'll write a proper full article about it but GOSH#i don't watch this show to be preached at. I watch it for a fun/tragic scifi romp and also to see interesting ideas explored#and reflect the climate of the world and how society influences media#explore the idea of climate change turning the world into a post apocalypse! that's such a fun idea and topical!

Honestly I have a lot of Thoughts on the US animal rescue industry as a whole, particularly the rescues in big cities in blue states, which generally don't actually have much in the way of an abandoned/stray animal problem. (I'd have to go in and try to find actual statistics, but a definitely significant amount of the shelters and rescues around here get most of their animals from overcrowded shelters in the Southern US, because there aren't actually enough unwanted animals here, particularly dogs, to meet the demand for rescue animals.) Like the demonization of breeders, no matter how ethical (and people who get animals from said breeders) gets insane. And the adoption requirements also get insane, in a way that can make it extremely difficult for anyone who isn't upper middle class or above (or old enough that they managed to buy property decades ago before the cost of housing became absurd) to get a dog in these areas.
