Which adaptation of Sherlock Holmes is the most queer?
*not including House M.D. because it's not really an adaptation, or any overtly queer pastiches like My Dearest Holmes or The Adventure of the Furtive Festivity because that's not really a fair contest
#I'm on a sherlock holmes kick at the moment and this feels justifiable#because a lot of people in the original sherlock poll said 'it depends on the adaptation' and that's true. so which is the queerest?#you can interpret this as the representation of sherlock's sexuality (ace or gay or both or whatever) or just the overall vibes#imo there is no one right answer but there are few wrong answers#also I'm sure I'm missing some but he's literally the most commonly adapted character ever. I had to draw a line somewhere#sherlock holmes#arthur conan doyle#basil rathbone#the private life of sherlock holmes#robert stevens#soviet sherlock holmes#granada holmes#jeremy brett#sherlock holmes 2009#robert downey jr#bbc sherlock#benedict cumberbatch#cbs elementary#elementary sherlock#jonny lee miller#enola holmes#henry cavill#johnlock

Maybe Jane Austen's real genius was that, unlike other authors at the time, she didn't have long sections where characters share their backstory. Or rather, when she did it, she set it up like a mystery so we'd want to know the backstory.
Instead of having a character be like, "Here's three chapters about my life," soon after showing up in the novel, she'd sprinkle little clues through the story that make us wonder, "What's Colonel Brandon's deal?" and then closer to the end of the story, Colonel Brandon would tell us what his deal was. We'd wonder "Why does Mr. Darcy do all those horrible things?" and then he'd give an explanation that includes a lot of backstory.
And these infodumps always come in response to significant moments of the story. She'd engage our minds and our emotions and then give us the infodump at a point when we care about the information it contains. Compared to some other authors (even some that came long after) it seems like a significant innovation.
#jane austen#books#random thought of the day#anyway 'helen' had two solid chapters of a secondary character sharing her backstory#at a point where i'm like 'i literally did not need to know that you had your heart broken as a teenager'#'and struggled with temptations toward political corruption with your second husband'#nothing about the story had made me even slightly curious about her backstory#it's fine for what it is but wow was it unnecessary and wow did it grind the story to a halt#and this was published decades after austen died!#(although it continued to be a problem long after)#(my other major example of a bad infodump)#(was conan doyle having a character show up and give the resolution to the mystery)#(as a novella-length infodump about his entire life)

He looks so uncomfortable 🥺
But some truly remarkable acting from Jeremy here. Holmes isn't used to receiving gratitude in such an intimate way, not even wanting to touch her hand for very long. It's almost as though we see Holmes try to calibrate what he should do in real time, his arm going around to hold her but stopping himself. We see him pry her off gently, and he then realises he's holding this young lady's hand. So he proceeds to flick it away. With a mute apology, he distances himself from her, preferring to stand at the window and have his back to his guests. It all happens very quickly.
I'm not entirely sure why Holmes reacts this way, but it's very characteristic of him.

i joke about ociel thinking he's his dad's age a lot but like really he does. something so heartbreaking about the fact that whenever ciel references his own age it's like he's making an inside joke- dryly reminding the dinner party in book of murder that children have early bedtimes, for example. as if his age is a mere technicality, it's inaccurate on some level but is still a loophole he can exploit when convenient. Feigned innocence.
Because in kuro youth primarily functions as an axis of powerlessness. Ciel can't act his age or he's delegitimized. It's just another wall he's built between his persona and his actual self. To be Earl Ciel Phantomhive The Queen's Guard Dog he buries his age, his name, his illnesses........ idk it just always gets me that he isn't only borrowing from his brother, but his father as well. Anybody but himself. He really believes it, too, that any lie can become the truth with enough dedication and hard work.. He's so good at deluding himself. But he's not a grizzled 34 year old detective :( hes just a baby :(
#he also tries so hard to bury his naturally empathetic tendencies but it doesnt work#i will not get into it but everything surrounding his relationship with finnian AUGH. boy i know you hired him bc you saw yourself#ciel phantomhive is a masterclass in character writing because tell me why hes constantly lying to everyone including himself about almost#every aspect of his identity. and yet the reader comes to know the true him so well. that is my baby boy#i need to save him so bad#arthur conan doyle and me are exactly the same in this way#kuroshitsuji#black butler#txt#50#100#200

Do you know this (noncanon) ADHD character?
SPECIFICALLY FROM THE ORIGINAL STORIES, NOT ANY ADAPTATIONS.
Evidence below the cut!
He has periods of depression when he has nothing to do, but during cases he becomes so absorbed that he refuses to eat and has actually made himself ill in the post-case crash. He uses cocaine when there are no cases because he says his brain must have stimulation, and the cocaine actually relaxes him--classic self-medication (ps don't use cocaine for ADHD babes). Watson gets on him all the time for how untidy he is, and he does impulsive things like shooting into the wall so he can examine the bullets. And when he's trying to think he makes a pile of pillows to sit in, or puts his feet up on the mantlepiece, or (most often) sits and scratches away idly at his violin (tho he makes up for it to Watson by playing real pieces afterwards). Oh, and he keeps his tobacco in a persian slipper above the fireplace!

Model drawing of Red in her stage costume that was designed for her musical number in “Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes,” 2010. It was exciting to get a chance to work with Red and the other Tex Avery characters we added to this film.

I feel deeply for Natsu Hyuuga, author of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto/The Apothecary Diaries. On the one hand she's written such a brilliant story, and the character arcs and relationship between Maomao and Jinshi are some of the best I've seen in years. On the other hand, she's been very upfront about how Jinshi was originally just meant to be a comic relief character, she doesn't like him, finds him annoying and wonders why he's so popular. Basically:
#If Kusuriya no Hitorigoto/The Apothecary Diaries is Chinese Court Sherlock Holmes then Natsu Hyuuga is Arthur Conan Doyle#One of the nightmares of any author: a character that you hate but your readers LOVE#Kusuriya no Hitorigoto#The Apothecary Diaries#Natsu Hyuuga#maomao#jinshi

Irene Adler
from the Sherlock Holmes series (A Scandal in Bohemia) by Arthur Conan Doyle
#I debated including bbc sherlock irene partly because it may skew votes and mainly because she's a terrible portrayal of the character#steven moffat will see an actual strong female character and say 'damn is anyone gonna fetishise her under the guise of empowerment?'#and not wait for an answer#anyway. alas there are no good original illustrations of irene and I don't think any other adaptations are recognisable enough to include#but y'know. vote based on the original story#a scandal in bohemia#sherlock holmes#irene adler#arthur conan doyle#granada holmes#ritchie holmes#bbc sherlock#classic literature#polls#queer#new post

Holmes interacts with flowers twice in The Naval Treaty. One of which he admires, and the other he gives to Mrs. Hudson as a sign of gratitude.
I find it fascinating how he can pretend to be so unfeeling and purely logical, yet he allows himself to see the beauty in things as romantic and simple as music or flowers. Holmes handles the rose (in the left picture) so tenderly. In this scene, he is confronted for becoming distracted and even seems to have forgotten about the case entirely. Holmes finds comfort in nature (even if he pretends he hates it), as we see later in the episode:
Both interactions with flowers are in the presence of other people. It's as though Holmes can justify affection, but only if it is directed towards an object and not a person. Perhaps because he knows said object cannot reciprocate those feelings. When he gives Mrs. Hudson a flower, he's showing his affection for her through it instead of to her directly.
In a way, I feel as though Holmes expresses his love through acts of service as we see him give others gifts, like when he gives Watson his favourite type of cigars in A Scandal in Bohemia. I feel he prefers this method as there is less attention on him and his feelings, and more on the gift itself.
