here comes the finished artwork!!
doing the colours on this was so much fun!! the patterns on her arm and belt were the highlight for me, since I have never added so much detail to a flat surface before!
it was also nice to draw a night sky as a background again. I don't know why, but they're somehow always my favourite thing to work on in any given composition!
have a heartfelt next 24 hours and remember to do your stretches <3

gasp! another character ref sheet! this time for my character Lanturn Lustre, a student wizard just trying to get by! his mean of getting by may or may not include seducing rich men into giving him expensive gifts and money and he may or may not have gotten a bit too use to living lavishly,,,

Irezumi (1966)
"See how fascinating this painting is? A beauty trampling the corpses of countless men at her feet, feasting on their flesh and blood to grow and prosper. Tell me... don't you think she resembles you?"
#irezumi#japanese cinema#1966#yasuzô masumura#jun'ichirô tanizaki#kaneto shindô#ayako wakao#akio hasegawa#gaku yamamoto#kei satô#fujio suga#reiko fujiwara#asao uchida#kikue môri#hikaru hayashi#absolutely beautiful film. full of deep‚ rich colours and vibrant detail‚ a masterful composition on a morbid subject#I've loved the other Masumura films I've seen‚ and appreciate his aesthetic focus and eye for detail but this is the first of his colour#works I've seen and it's a whole new level. near perfect in pure visual terms; plotting and script‚ while suitably dramatic#and tragic‚ aren't quite as perfect. centres on a terrific performance from Wakao as a woman transformed from an impulsive and#irresponsible but romantic girl into a cold‚ near monstrous vision of vengeful hatred. arguably Masumura is asking the viewer to look at#Wakao's distorted personality by the end of the film as somewhat grotesque or at least as tragic but i gotta say that in 2023 it's hard not#to feel a frisson of 'good for her' as she engineers the bloody deaths of every man who ever wronged her#the character could perhaps have used a little more nuance and I'd also have liked to have seen more made of the parallels in trading flesh#(both figuratively as sex work and literally as canvas for tattooists) but these are relatively minor gripes. a kind of updated fairy tale#with a moralist slant‚ but a deeply beautiful one. rain swept and blood drenched‚ deep shadows and pale skin‚ flashing blades and#rich fabric folds. sumptuous.

Happy New Year folks!!
2024 is done and dusted, 2025 is here! Hopefully this year will be better than the last!
The character of choice I went with for this year’s piece was Halvren, he’s one of the side characters you meet in the prequel arc. I’m not going to spoil his role but he’s integral to the story and I definitely had a lot of fun designing him!
Cheers! 🥂

If anyone here keeps a reading/book journal what do you dooo. I feel like I’ve tried multiple options and none of them have really been perfect
#this year & 2023 i used a goodnotes template i found on etsy#what i like about it is it’s aesthetically pleasing to me; there’s one page per book; and there are places to keep statistics#what i don’t like is when i want to do a specific reading challenge like a bingo i always lose track of that page#and it doesn’t fit the rest of the journal aesthetically#i also don’t like how.. finicky it feels?#i don’t like writing with a smart pen. if i’m going to be writing by hand at all it needs to be with an actual pen#i make way more mistakes writing on a screen than i do on paper#i also ended up deleting a lot of stuff like series trackers (because i mostly read standalones) and stuff like colouring in books#as i read them. because that would probably be fun if i was doing it on actual paper but it’s NOT fun on a tablet i can tell you that#so basically the templates provided didn’t fit my style all the time and there isn’t a good way for me to add in stuff i do want to do#i mean i can duplicate pages but that’s it#i don’t think another ipad journal is for me. i gave zinnia a try but i didn’t find it intuitive at all#and i can’t justify the price of £35 for the year#for that amount i might as well buy a leuchtturm and some stickers and washi tape and go full bullet journal girly#i do think longhand might be the way. but my problem is i have a real tendency to run my mouth#i would have to enforce the one page per book rule rigidly or we’ll have a repeat of the filofax incident of 2019 (when i had to buy a ton#of filofax refills because i kept writing too much about the books i read that year#and i read 106 books that year so i physically couldn’t keep everything in the filofax)#also i can’t draw for shit; my printer is 10 years old and hates me; and i don’t want to buy anything#so it’s going to be so unaesthetic i will get bored Quickly#honestly i see myself going back to what i did from 2020-22 which was one long google doc for the year#number; book title; author; page count; date finished. bullet point thoughts#i don’t know why i left this behind. probably because it was a bit too spartan even for me#look i’ll figure it out#personal

cheers for the finished colours on this one!
getting these right actually took 3 attempts, which doesn't sound like a lot, but trust me it is. aside for the long time I've already spent on it, I actually love this piece! it contains tons of elements I really like to draw and see in other people's work ^v^
speaking of, I just realized that I've never actually posted some food art on here! honestly speaking it's also been a while since I've actually shaded something like it, so that might be another long-term art goal to fulfill!
have a nice next 24 hours everybody and spend a little time with family, whether it be chosen or blood-related c:

Had a few folks interested in how I made the patches I posted for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, so I thought I'd give y'all my step-by-step process for making hand-embroidered patches!
Tumblr media
First, choose your fabric and draw on your design. You can use basically any fabric for this - for this project I'm using some felt I've had lying around in my stash for ages.
Tumblr media
Next, choose your embroidery floss. For my patches I split my embroidery floss into two threads with 3 strands each, as pictured. You can use as many strands in your thread as you prefer, but for the main body of my patches I prefer 3 strands.
Next you're going to start filling your design using a back stitch.
Tumblr media
First, put in a single stitch where you want your row to start.
Tumblr media
Poke your needle up through the fabric 1 stitch-length away from your first stitch.
Tumblr media
Poke your needle back down the same hole your last stitch went into so they line up end-to-end.
Repeat until you have a row of your desired length (usually the length of that colour section from one end to the other). Once you have your first row, you're going to do your next row slightly offset from your first row so that your stitches lay together in a brick pattern like this:
Tumblr media
Make sure your rows of stitches are tight together, or you'll get gaps where the fabric shows through.
Rinse and repeat with rows of back stitch to fill in your patch design.
Tumblr media
When you're almost to the end of your thread, poke your needle through to the back of the fabric and pull the thread under the back part of the stitching to tuck in the end. Don't worry if it looks messy - no one's gonna see the back anyway.
This next step is fully optional, but I think it makes the patch design really pop. Once your patch is filled in, you can use black embroidery floss to outline your design (or whatever colour you want to outline with - it's your patch, do what you want). I use the full thread (6 strands, not split) of embroidery floss to make a thicker outline.
Tumblr media
I use the same back stitch I used to fill the piece to make an outline that adds some separation and detail. You could use most any 'outlining' stitch for this, but I just use back stitch because it's just easier for me to do.
Once you're finished embroidering your patch, it's time to cut it out!
Tumblr media
Make sure to leave a little border around the edge to use for sewing your patch on your jacket/bag/blanket/whatever, and be careful not to accidentally cut through the stitches on the back of the patch.
If you have a sturdy enough fabric that isn't going to fray, you can just leave it like this. If not, I recommend using a whip stitch/satin stitch to seal in the exposed edges (I find that splitting your embroidery floss into 3-strand threads works best for this).
Tumblr media
And then you're done! At this point you can put on iron-on backing if you want, or just sew it on whatever you wanna put it on. Making patches this way does take a long time, but I feel that the results are worth it.
Thanks for reading this tutorial! I hope it was helpful. If anyone makes patches using this method, I'd love to see them! 😁

for the horse asks: appaloosa?
Appaloosa - What's your favorite horse color(s)?
I don’t really have one but I LOVE when horses and ponies are what they’re supposed to be!
I’m also a huge fan of the primitive markings, and general Lascaux cave horse appearance.
So like I wouldn’t say flaxen chestnut is my favorite AT ALL, but the Haflinger!! . yes you are a cobby little horse with a big butt that needs to be a flaxen chestnut!! and everyone understands this. Perfect animal. No need to track changes. Also I do love when a horse has a bit of texture in their mane and tail, so respect to Haflingers for being the rare wavy-haired horsie. I don’t even like blondes so you see what I mean here about it just being the pure synergy of intention and form and style, the Haflinger just is perfectly complete.
Tumblr media
And then a brunblakk fjord horse. The mealy muzzle. The dorsal stripe. Black ear tips. Someone from 20,000 years ago is grasping my hand across space and time and we are crying together about how perfect a thick little horsie can get. Granted the fjords always have the weirdest haircuts in the world, but you can see exactly why. This horse is so perfectly what it’s supposed to be that you can’t resist scrungling it a little bit. Also another animal that IS its name like: all Norwegian Fjords LOOK like the breed name is Norwegian Fjord, and they ARE all named things like Freya. As they should be. This is an animal that is exactly what it should be.
You know how horse people compliment each other’s horses by saying they have a kind eye? It’s hard not to have a Kind Eye if you are a brunblakk Norwegian Fjord.
Tumblr media
And of course, my baby, my darling, my moorland mousie, the feral shaggy brown/bay with mealy markings that is the Exmoor Pony. You look at this tubby beastie and you say YES. YES YOU ARE BORN TO BE A LITTLE BEASTIE ENCOUNTERED SUDDENLY ON A MISTY MOOR . The sculpting of the contour colours! Some sculpture artist would spend hours with an airbrush trying to do that! and they just wake up in the morning , eyeliner: on, eyeshadow: on, lipstick: on, cheeks: contoured, muzzle: mealy, dapples subtle, ready to go. Can’t even see their eyes half the time, but underneath 25 pounds of luscious pelted mane they’re wearing natural mascara. And for what? Living full time on rocks in the rain, baby!! This is a cave painting horse and it always will be!
Tumblr media
The reverse of that of course is horses who Shouldn’t Be That Color. For example I am a little bit upset by this chestnut Shire, who isn’t a flaxen chestnut and probably should be. What are you doing baby? You need some leg markings sweetheart. Can we just dye your mane and tail black maybe, you have bay energy. Ughhhhh I’m trying not to be prescriptive. Ughhhh all horses are beautiful and beauty standards are fake but ———— - sweet child we HAVE to style you somehow!!!! You are a Shire!!!!! WHAT IS THIS??
Tumblr media
And I love - LOVE! - a grulla/grullo. Obvious reasons: I like primitive markings, and I have the aesthetic taste of a small child. Who doesn’t secretly love a deviantart sparklehorse?
but I will be the first to admit that it is a razor’s edge between a really lovely grulla horse who reaches back to touch our shared history and knowledge of ourselves, an unbroken thread of beauty that should be painted in a cave under an ancient mountain, like a jewel of the earth: and a necromantic vessel that was bred to encourage possession by evil ghosts, to be harvested regularly and sold at retail prices by some midwestern white woman as part of some tortuous work-from-home scheme. And I do understand this. I know this about myself and about grullas. Like, this one is a horse that probably shouldn’t - we probably shouldn’t have done this. You know?
Tumblr media
Do not ask about cremellos.
