Irezumi (1966)
"See how fascinating this painting is? A beauty trampling the corpses of countless men at her feet, feasting on their flesh and blood to grow and prosper. Tell me... don't you think she resembles you?"
#irezumi#japanese cinema#1966#yasuzô masumura#jun'ichirô tanizaki#kaneto shindô#ayako wakao#akio hasegawa#gaku yamamoto#kei satô#fujio suga#reiko fujiwara#asao uchida#kikue môri#hikaru hayashi#absolutely beautiful film. full of deep‚ rich colours and vibrant detail‚ a masterful composition on a morbid subject#I've loved the other Masumura films I've seen‚ and appreciate his aesthetic focus and eye for detail but this is the first of his colour#works I've seen and it's a whole new level. near perfect in pure visual terms; plotting and script‚ while suitably dramatic#and tragic‚ aren't quite as perfect. centres on a terrific performance from Wakao as a woman transformed from an impulsive and#irresponsible but romantic girl into a cold‚ near monstrous vision of vengeful hatred. arguably Masumura is asking the viewer to look at#Wakao's distorted personality by the end of the film as somewhat grotesque or at least as tragic but i gotta say that in 2023 it's hard not#to feel a frisson of 'good for her' as she engineers the bloody deaths of every man who ever wronged her#the character could perhaps have used a little more nuance and I'd also have liked to have seen more made of the parallels in trading flesh#(both figuratively as sex work and literally as canvas for tattooists) but these are relatively minor gripes. a kind of updated fairy tale#with a moralist slant‚ but a deeply beautiful one. rain swept and blood drenched‚ deep shadows and pale skin‚ flashing blades and#rich fabric folds. sumptuous.

Writing my Natsume's Book of Friends fanfic did force me to contend with who, if anyone, has a car in Yatsuhara (Natsume's town). It's obviously a very walkable place and thanks to Japan's actual robust public transit it seems like they take the train or bus everywhere so a lot of people probably don't.
I don't THINK the Fujiwaras have a car since we never see it and the layout of their house doesn't look like it has a garage or car anywhere. I guess Shigeru takes the train or walks to wherever he works.
So I just ended up choosing Nishimura at random as the one whose family has a car because it was convenient for the fic's plot.
It also made me realize absolutely nobody in Natsume appears to have any kind of cell phone. I guess either it perpetually takes place in 2003 or there's just like. absolutely no service in that town.
There's actually not any super modern technology now that I think about it...these kids don't even seem to have a Playstation. what the hell.

Hey, @confusednymphinayellowdress, I'm your gift giver for @natsume-ss spring exchange! I went with the time travel prompt. I hope you like it!
Rating: general audience
Warning: none
Relationship: Natsume Reiko & Fujiwara Touko
Characters: Natsume Reiko, Fujiwara Touko, the black and the white crow
Additional tags: time travel, good parent Fujiwara Touko, slightly ooc Reiko, yokai shenanigans
Summary: No one said having a son with secrets was going to be easy. And while Touko would never pressure Takashi into telling her anything, her crow friends disagree. Fortunately or unfortunately they decide to give Touko some pointers, if she wants them or not.
Or: Local crows decide to involve the mom™ in some timey wimey shenanigans, leading to an unlikely meeting.

Natsume's Book of Friends (Season 7)
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Natsume's Book of Friends (Season 7, 2024, Japan)
Director: Hideki Ito
Writer: Sadayuki Murai (based on the manga by Yuki Midorikawa)
Mini-review:
This is a show that never fails to enchant me, no matter how many years and seasons pass. It has such a special knack for building a calm, whimsical atmosphere that always manages to help me relax. But at the same time, it doesn't hesitate to turn spooky when the story needs it. At the end of the day, Natsume's Book of Friends makes for an experience that you can't get anywhere else, and that's why I'll keep coming back for as long as new stuff comes out. And thanks to its (mostly) episodic structure, it's okay if you don't really remember what happened in previous seasons, which is something I definitely appreciate. But hopefully next time we won't have to wait so long...

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (Ep 46)
The villains disguise themselves as Rangers and attacked the civilians. Then they disguise as civilians to attack the Rangers, when the civilians see the fighting, the villains acted as if they're the victims being attacked and abused by the Rangers, asking for help.
The media villainize the Rangers as the people turned on them. An example that you can't trust everything you see in the media.

Happy Monday, friends!
Today is the FINAL POLL until my Read & Review Shoujo Spree YouTube event officially kicks off in TWO WEEKS!
I am SO excited, but I thought for this last poll I would change it up a little bit! 🤭
Neither one of these titles were in the event last year, but I would LOVE for a magical girl manga to be in the running this time around! 🤩
Which of these series do you want to be in the event?
Vote here: https://www.youtube.com/@LauraAGrace/community

What is Seimei relationship to Abe no Takako as they have the same surname? Are they from the same Clan?
It seems like the Onmyoji 2023 Anime have some plots that are similar to what I read in these summaries of this manga, which could mean they could be in the novel too.
According to Wikipedia, Takuzu is Seimei's wife so is she in her teens and so is Seimei is in his 20s? It is not out of the ordinary, but it might turn some my followers off.
I do understand them giving Seimei's sons more attention, but why did the author included Abe no Yoshimasa, but not Abe no Yoshihira?
Onmyouji Vol 9

The volumes are getting increasingly thicker. This volume contains three stories.
In the first, “Uri Sennin,” Hiromasa tells Seimei about an odd experience he had:  he was traveling when an old man asked some men transporting melons if he could have some. They refused, but the old man took the melon seeds, planted them, and turned them into melon plants, which everyone ate. But then the men figured out that those were the melons they were carrying.

Of course Natsume cries over the doomed yuri, just like I want to. But what he says to Nyanko-sensei also shows how he's different from Reiko--rather than pretending it doesn't matter who you see beautiful things with, that it's the same whether you're alone or not, he's open about the fact his loved ones being there matters. He directly tells Nyanko-sensei he wants him to be here and see the flowers with him. He voices the thought Reiko never could for Souko, that she buried deep inside.
Reiko's always been positioned as the person Natsume could have become. The path he could have continued down if the Fujiwaras hadn't found him.
What if Natsume had missed out on his relationship with Tanuma because of a misunderstanding? With Taki? With Nishimura and Kitamoto and Sasada? He might have given up just like Reiko did in the early days/ But he was lucky, and that didn't happen. And now he's the kind of person who doesn't assume he's better off alone, who fights for every connection he has.
He was able to change because of the Fujiwaras...but also, a large part of why Natsume turned differently from Reiko is the Book of Friends itself. The Book of Friends is a product of an unfulfilled relationship, of heartbreak. But it was never that to Natsume. It was a way to connect with his grandmother, and a way to pick up where she left off. He meets so many of his friends and loved ones because of her, because of the book, and he maintains those relationships in the way she never could. He wouldn't have met Nyanko sensei if not for Reiko, and he might have never stuck around if not for his initial interest in the Book. And he forms a much deeper relationship.
(It's still unclear how lasting Reiko and Nyanko-sensei's relationship was either, and if it was a result of something to do with the book. He certainly doesn't talk about it, and it's clear he doesn't know all that much about her and that he wasn't as close to her as he now is to Natsume, but there is an implication he really cared about her.)
Natsume takes over for Reiko in protecting Shigeru from the yokai that still haunts them, uses her knowledge to do it, but doesn't run away afterwards, even if he's afraid of getting hurt. Then there's Hinoe, Misuzu, the way the Book was a way he connected with Taki.. the book is how things begin for him, not end, it's a way to release someone and let them choose to stay. The Book is dangerous, and it turns Natsume's life into a constant stream of near death encounters, but it's also given him so much, so many bonds he's treasured.
And now he's discovered it would have never existed if it weren't for Souko. He hasn't just been carrying around a fragment of his grandmother, but the girl who almost became her first friend, the girl who loved her. Just like for Reiko, Souko is a part of him now.
Doomed yuri is fine for what it is, but I can't help but hope Souko and Reiko ran into each other, however briefly, before she died. That they were able to at least clear the air and have a sloppy makeout session.
Because isn't that what Natsume has been struggling to find for Reiko? He holds onto hope she was able to change. That she was able to find the joy and love and fulfillment he has.
Another interesting way things could come full circle is if Natsume ran into the present-day Souko. Reiko died young so there's a good chance Souko's still alive. What if she ran into Natsume and he was finally able to tell her that Reiko was waiting for her. In fact, I've literally already started writing that fic. So prepare for that in the future, I guess.
When it inspires you to write a fanfic, you know an episode's good, and this one was excellent. I'm sad we only have one episode left. At least there's the special in the spring.
