and finally Wirt is playing the oboe, not the bassoon! I really enjoy drawing Wirt, he's so precious.

Edit: I clearly don't know my instruments, because Wirt plays clarinet... Not oboe. I only realised because... Uhm... I might be rewatching the show again. Did I mention I really like this show?

Chapter 3: Lingering Notes

The rehearsal was winding down, the last chord reverberating through the music room. The sound lingered, a satisfying hum that made even Bucky feel like he was part of something bigger. Fury was already standing at the front of the room, his commanding presence silencing the quiet rustle of music stands and shuffling papers.

“Well done tonight,” Fury said, his voice calm but firm. “Most of you followed the tempo this time. Looking at you, Clint.”

“Hey, I’m artistic!” Clint protested, earning a few chuckles.

“Artistic doesn’t mean ahead of the beat,” Fury deadpanned. “Fix it. And for the love of all things holy, percussion, stop trying to outdo each other on volume. You’re not at a rock concert.”

Peter and Steve shared a guilty glance, prompting a low murmur of laughter from the group.

“That’s it for tonight,” Fury continued, waving them off. “Concert’s in three weeks, so don’t screw it up. Dismissed.”

The room erupted into movement, the energy buzzing as cases clicked open and instruments were packed away.

Bucky exhaled slowly, the tension in his chest still lingering even though the rehearsal was over. He carefully removed the mouthpiece from his trumpet, his hands steady but deliberate. It had been years since he’d held the instrument seriously, and while the basics came back quickly, his prosthetic arm added a layer of difficulty he wasn’t used to.

Across the room, Natasha and Wanda were already chatting, Natasha’s flute and Wanda’s clarinet packed away neatly. Sam leaned on his bugle case, teasing Clint, who was balancing his bassoon precariously against his chair.

Bucky’s gaze wandered to Steve, who was stacking sheet music. “Not bad for your first time back,” Steve said when he caught Bucky looking. “How’s it feel?”

“Rusty,” Bucky admitted.

Steve gave him an encouraging smile. “You’ll get there. Remember how awful I sounded on the bass drum the first few weeks in the army band?”

Bucky let out a rare chuckle. “You’re still awful.”

“Hey, I made it work,” Steve replied with mock indignation. “And look at us now. Back in the music game. Who’d have thought?”

Bucky didn’t reply, but the memory brought a small smile to his lips.

Sam ambled over, holding his bugle loosely in one hand. “You heading out, Barnes, or are you sticking around for the after-party?”

Bucky raised an eyebrow. “After-party?”

“We hit the diner after every rehearsal,” Clint chimed in, slinging his bassoon case over his shoulder. “Best fries you’ll ever have.”

“I don’t know,” Bucky said hesitantly, his fingers fidgeting with the latch on his trumpet case.

“Come on, it’s tradition,” Sam said, his tone light. “Gotta properly welcome you to the gang.”

“Think of it as hazing, but with cholesterol,” Clint added with a grin.

Bucky glanced at Steve, who gave him a small nod. “It’s not bad,” Steve said. “And you might actually have fun.”

Before Bucky could respond, Tara approached the group, her oboe case slung casually over her shoulder. She smiled at the cluster of musicians, her energy bright and welcoming.

“Are we doing fries tonight?” she asked, her gaze flitting between Clint and Natasha.

“Of course,” Natasha said, tucking her flute under her arm. “You’re coming, right?”

“Wouldn’t miss it,” Tara said. Her eyes landed on Bucky, and she hesitated for a moment before stepping closer.

“Hey,” she said warmly, “nice playing tonight. First rehearsal back, right?”

Bucky straightened slightly, nodding. “Yeah. It’s been a while.”

“You’re a fast learner,” Tara said, smiling. “Or just naturally good. Either way, it’s impressive.”

Sam, sensing the awkwardness creeping in, jumped in to ease the tension. “Tara’s been playing with us for a while now. She’s part of the reason the woodwinds actually stay in sync.”

Tara laughed lightly. “Steve’s overselling me, as usual. But thanks for the vote of confidence.”

Bucky’s lips twitched into a faint smile. “Well, thanks. I’m still getting the hang of things again.”

Steve, who had been silently observing the exchange, cleared his throat and leaned in a little, his tone light but teasing. “Hey, Tara, don’t let Bucky fool you. He’s actually a natural. Just a little out of practice, but he’ll be showing us all up soon enough.”

Tara raised an eyebrow at Bucky. “I’ll take that as a challenge.”

Bucky chuckled, his posture relaxing. “We’ll see.”

The group started gathering their things, and Tara joined the others as they made their way out.

“Fries?” Clint said as he held the door open for the group, a playful glint in his eye.

“Definitely fries,” Natasha agreed.

As they all filed out, Bucky felt the familiar weight of his trumpet case in his hand, but this time, the weight didn’t feel as heavy. There was a sense of ease now, the spark of camaraderie lighting something he hadn’t realized had been dimmed. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.

leo/need

ichika would definitely be in the woodwind section, very likely alto sax. she joined to be with the rest of leo/need who now need a high sustained voice (see saki) to jam out together. she's not the greatest but she has a very solid and grounded sound.

saki started on trumpet (like her brother), but she ended up moving to percussion because her sickness prevented her from playing trumpet properly (disclaimer i know next to none of the lore past the very broad strokes so pls let me know if this wouldn't work for whatever reason). she would specialize in mallet percussion!

shiho would be that one bassoon player who's absolutely cracked at their instrument and is somehow also very good at several other instruments as well.

honami is percussion (duh) but unlike saki she specializes in timpani! she also does drumset for pieces that need it!

minori would definitely play french horn cuz she heard haruka playing a french horn solo with like a youth symphony or something. she was terrible at it at first but she kept pushing and steadily got better and better until she got second chair horn (aka sitting next to haruka)

haruka, like i mentioned, has played horn for quite some time, having played with youth symphonies and entered solo competitions as well. she was on the verge of quitting for good before she heard minori practicing outside, and they both joined band together!

shizuku plays flute and has a knack for playing very pretty. especially her higher range is much less shrill than her sectionmates'. she sometimes plays the piccolo parts on the flute just for funsies.

airi plays tuba specifically cuz she reminds me of this one tuba player from my high school band. she's a very strong all-round player and leader of the low brass section.

vivid bad squad

kohane plays clarinet. this makes so much sense to me. but her playing would have been very thin and very weak, then it became more full bodied and warm after she met an and heard her playing.

an plays tenor sax, although she also knows alto sax and can play bari sax decently well if needed. she definitely has a lot of street jazz influence growing up on vivid street. she has written several duets for herself and kohane that she has yet to show her.

akito plays trombone. i feel like this doesn't need elaboration but he would have been one of *those* trombone players starting off in middle school, but after seeing a jazz trombone performance, he started to take it a lot more seriously, ending up on vivid street.

toya started out playing the oboe cuz of his father, but switched to euphonium after meeting akito, kind of as a way to support him but also to explore a new avenue and carve his own path. he also benefitted a lot under airi's leadership, and of course from being under tsukasa's wing.

wonderlands x showtime

tsukasa, as mentioned earlier, plays trumpet because of course he does. he would have been one of those kids obsessed with hitting the highest note but eventually developed into an outstanding and very well-rounded player, exercising a very high level of musicianship. he's also strong leader in the brass section along with airi. obviously he continues to play at such a high level because saki can't play trumpet anymore, and you can hear how he almost plays as two for some passages.

emu is a percussionist, and she is very focused on unpitched percussion (especially cymbals) because they make boom and crash sounds but also a plethora of other very interesting sounds. this is also why she was so excited to find the rest of wxs because there is only so much you can do as a solo unpitched percussionist.

rui plays bari sax but one of those saxophones who spends way too much time with the percussion section. he repairs and maintains the percussion instruments but also sometimes makes new instruments with crap he has lying around. he's also the go-to instrument repairman for everyone in the band because his supply of spare parts seems to have no end.

nene started on clarinet but eventually fell in love with the bass clarinet. at first her approach was to achieve the best blend with the ensemble but now she's also looking for ways to really make the bass clarinet shine in its own right.

25ji nightcord de

kanade plays horn but also has a very strong understanding of how all the instruments in the ensemble work together. as a result, she's also composed a few pieces for the band to play (every single one has driven the audience to tears).

mafuyu plays the oboe, according to her mother's wishes, but instead of switching instruments, kanade's compositions helped bring out the oboe in ways that helped mafuyu's individuality shine through.

ena would play flute. she'd be a very good player at her best but her sound is very affected by how tense she is, more so than others. she's VERY good at technical passages and every note is crystal clear.

mizuki is definitely a french horn player. their playing is good, but they're really in band to have a good time. they can often be found chatting with those around them, specifically the rest of the brass section and the saxes.

anyway my knowledge of sekai lore is rudimentary at best so i'd love to hear more thoughts on these. i might add the virtual singers at some point as well who knows.

Band Ships 2 (Clarinet Edition)

Clarinet x Flute:

Clarinet mellows out around flute, they’re a really chill pair.

Silent jokes, passing notes in class, giggling about a text they sent each other, while trying not to get caught because they sit in the front row.

Flute is probably a bit more mischievous in this case, though Clarinet certainly isn’t doing anything to stop them.

Cuddles, gifts, and fun times.

(Bonus points if the flute is the guy, because male flutists are adorable)

“No, I love you more!”

Clarinet x Piccolo:

The piccolo is absolutely FERAL. You wouldn’t expect it at all, but somehow they stuff all the rage they have into that tiny instrument. Lots of rage, itty bitty living space.

Clarinet is always surprised at Piccolo’s mannerisms, but finds it funny that the ability to play a smaller instrument somehow transforms the flutist from a bunny to a beast.

The musical range of both of their instruments is how down to Earth they are/can be.

Piccolo is extremely nice to Clarinet though, a side some people didn’t think they had.

Most people like both of them though, and they’re a popular couple, if a bit unorthodox.

Clarinet x Clarinet:

Depressed, but depressed together!

Crackhead energy 24/7, one of them is always exhausted with the other’s shenanigans (though who is exhausted with who changes constantly)

“Bruh I went to bed at 1am.” “Dude same.”

Drag each other to social events and end up chilling together the entire time

Clarinet x Trumpet:

Definitely an enemies to lovers situation

Constant warfare over whose instrument class (woodwind/brass) is better than the other

“Look how high I can play!”

Insults. Lots and lots of playful insults.

Have secretly always liked each other but act like the other killed their dog or something

Actually adorable once they get past the whole “acting like they despise each other” thing

Clarinet x Bassoon:

Both such nerds. Such, such nerds.

They probably both play dungeons and dragons

Either that or one of them does and the others is a huge Star Wars nerd

They love to geek about things to each other, and the other loves to listen

The definition of the cool couple, everyone loves them and they’re just so chill

“Did you watch the new mandolorian?”

“Not yet, but my bard did kill a dragon last night so that’s fun.”

Clarinet x Oboe:

Clarinet will never let Oboe live down that one time the school newspaper took a picture of them and labeled it as “A student playing the clarinet”

Oboe will maintain their instrument DOESNT sound like a duck, and that clarinets sound like mice

There are many inside jokes between these two, half of the time they speak in indecipherable code and confuse everyone

Clarinet can be just as weird as Oboe sometimes, they just are better at hiding it

“How do you deal with Oboe, Clarinet? You’re so calm and they’re... not.”

“Well, when they say they want to dip fries in a McFlurry I dip my burger in instead and look them in the eye while taking a bite to assert my authority.”

Clarinet x Bass Clarinet:

Bass clarinet may have skipped classes all year but when they got a crush on Clarinet they suddenly started showing up to school more frequently

Clarinet thinks Bass Clarinet is really cool and admires them from afar (the row in front of them)

Lots of turning backwards to whisper something, which Bassoon can hear too (Bassoon is totally onto them by now)

Clarinet is more shy, more academic, and Bass Clarinet is lazy. Cool, but lazy.

Bassoon better help them get together because goodness knows these two will dance around each other more than Trumpets dance around the proper key

Clarinet x French Horn:

A genuinely sweet couple

French Horn is a bit wild but most of the time is really sweet

Lots of really cute small gestures get passed around between the two

Clarinet will give French Horn chocolate, French Horn will give Clarinet something they drew or a shiny rock they found

“I saw it and thought of you”

Lots of compliments

I mean LOTS of compliments

And neither one can accept one

Clarinet x Saxophone:

OH GOSH THE CHAOS IS COMING

EsPECIALLY if this is a bari sax

Altos and Clarinets are a funny duo, causing chaos but knowing where the lines are

They mess around, get in a bit of trouble, go “oops” and then do it again tomorrow

BARI SAXES ARE A WHIRLWIND THE CLARINET CAN NOT CONTAIN

Nor do they want to, it’s very entertaining actually

“Don’t you care that Bari is over there playing the bass drum with a trombone?”

*eating popcorn* “Not the craziest thing they’ve done this week if I’m honest”

Or

*sigh* “Again?”

Clarinet x Euphonium:

Clarinet asks what a euphonium is every three seconds

Euphonium has started asking what a clarinet is as well but this joke doesn’t really work

Euphonium has now resorted to coming up with increasingly convoluted answers to the question

“What’s a euphonium?”

“An eldritch horror that takes out peoples eyes and puts them in their shoes, forcing them to walk on their own sight devices like grapes.”

“And you play that thing??”

“Like a fiddle.”

For all their talk, actually show a lot of public affection and then joint tease whoever teases them about it

They make quite the team, and many a good roast has been said by them, leaving the band in fear and awe

Clarinet x Baritone:

Clarinet definitely fell for Baritone’s sense of humor

And vice versa

They’re both kind of the class clowns, and some of the Band Directors favorites (because they are totally being shipped by said Band Director)

They’re also both probably in choir, which sounds weird but if you’ve ever heard Baritone sing you’d be astonished if they weren’t in choir (which, if one of them isn’t, it’s Baritone)

Puns, lots of them

So many puns the band room is in an eternal state of facepalming

Pun battles yelled across the band room are definitely the most fun, and then someone else interjects as well and then it’s a full scale pun brawl

Might be found holding hands once or twice, but if called out will immediately act repulsed of each other, like they just noticed themselves they were doing that

Clarinet x Tuba:

Clarinet is definitely the smarter one in this relationship

But only when it comes to academics

Tuba is way better at people and is just generally a likable person while Clarinet is a bit more of an introvert

Clarinet tries their best to help Tuba in school

“Yes, ok I’ll help you with precalc homework but you owe me Starbucks later”

Tuba tries their best to help Clarinet at life

“You’re so mean! Apologize to Tumpet right now!” *laughs teasingly, but is proud when Clarinet does apologize*

Clarinet x Trombone:

Trombone is super awkward, and Clarinet is a total Tsundere.

Trombone is a crackhead around their friends, spends their time trying to get Clarinet to talk to them.

“Why are you hitting me, I didn’t do anything!” (Totally did something)

Clarinet can be super sweet, whenever this happens Trombone is caught off guard.

Clarinet x Percussion:

The CRACKHEADED duo. People usually think Clarinets are sweet at first, but they have a stored up energy that definitely manifests around Percussion.

Competitions, lots of them. From any outsider POV, they look like competitions of who can be the most stupid. I’m sure they have a reason for whatever they’re doing... right?

They are partners in crime, definitely, but Percussion will always be blamed and get in trouble with the Director.

“No, you can’t use the timpani as a trampoline!”

Actually both really sweet around each other, just when no one’s looking

Half the band has shipped them for years, the other half doesn’t know they’re already dating

Papa Louie Scarlett HCs

-Rosabella Ocampo is a 23 year old singer/songwriter and graduate school student who lives with her fiancé, Rudy, in a Powder Point condo. She is widely known by her legal/stage name, Scarlett Heart and is the lead singer/songwriter of Scarlett and the Shakers. While punk ska and playing gigs with her friends are her true passion, Scarlett plans to become a game theory professor in the future. She can mostly be seen writing lyrics for a new song, riding roller coasters with Rudy, climbing trees with Clover, and just vibing with Marty.

-Scarlett is rather bold and seductive, often playfully flirting with others or making jokes about inappropriate topics. I stole this from Rouge, thanks SnapCube fandub for revitalizing my love for Sonic. Alongside her flirtatiousness is her intelligence and desire to succeed, using rules and lessons that she learned from various games to apply to her daily life. Thanks to her love of poker and mahjong, Scarlett has grown to be very analytical and sly in her motives. Out of the shakers, she is undoubtedly the big sister friend as she’s kind of a bad influence on the rest of them and is always subjected to scoldings by mom friend, Janana.

-Rudy calls her “Princesa” because of her Cinderella-like backstory. Her mother was a very kind woman and Scarlett lived happily with her and her father. Her mother died in a roadside construction accident when Scarlett was only 9, leaving Scarlett heartbroken. Her father then married a woman named Moira with two sons, Graham and David, who was emotionally abusive towards Scarlett until she moved out at age 16. Scarlett’s relationship with her dad deteriorated over time and she’s basically disowned them since. She finds solace in Marty and Clover’s parents, who think of Rudy and Scarlett as their own. She also got along with the other Frostfield residents and helped Willow get back into hockey after her infamous car accident (the first one).

-Stan Twitter often makes memes of her because she’s so iconic and quotable. One of her most iconic moments was when she screamed “I wrote this next one about my bitch ass stepmom. Moira, if you’re listening, your hair is limp and you fucking suck!” at the VMAs.

-Music was her escape as a child, hence why she learned to sing and play multiple instruments. However, her stepmother made her play the violin in the school orchestra as opposed to being allowed in a punk rock band. Even though she was concertmaster and first chair, she hated life so badly. Scarlett can play the guitar, bass guitar, violin, cello, drums, the trumpet, the saxophone, the bassoon, the piano, the xylophone, the harp, the flute, the recorder, the French horn, the clarinet, i didn’t even list all of them and I’m tired already. When one of the other shakers has lead vocals on a song, she’ll take over playing their instrument.

-Scarlett met Rudy during their shared freshman year of high school. Hazelnut High’s orchestra department had its annual field trip to Powder Point (based off my actual orchestra field trip!). Scarlett decided to sneak away from her snobby classmates and teachers and have the time to herself. On one particularly large roller coaster, she sat next to a boy with a Mohawk who told her that since he was a Powder Point native, he could more than handle it. He then proceeded to cry the entire time while holding her hand. They realized how much they had in common and kept in contact even after her trip was over. Their relationship is super lovey dovey, yet chill at the same time. Couple goals, but not on the level of Prudence x Cooper x Taylor.

-The shakers got together during the 23rd season of Flipline’s Got Talent. After the shocking elimination of Taylor Morales in the quarterfinals, the remaining acts were merged together. Scarlett and Rudy and Marty and Clover were two sets of pairs merged together. They all got along beforehand and loved Scarlett’s songwriting, so they all wrote an original song together for the finals. Even though they were fan favorites and had lots of support from the audience, Bill and Boopsy’s amazing ventriloquy act was what won the show, with the upset Shakers coming in second place. Afterwards, they were approached by Janana who offered to become their agent, and all they’ve known since was success. Fun fact: Rudy wouldnt accept Clover and Marty into their act unless they beat him and Scarlett at poker. They did.

-The shakers each can speak multiple languages, with Scarlett being able to speak fluent English and Tagalog, Tagalog being her native language (Filipino gang!). She can also speak some Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, and Gaelic because she hangs around the other Shakers and Janana so much.

-All of the food, drinks, clothes, and personal belongings Scarlett loves are various shades of red. Cherries, longanisa, red wine, and candied strawberries are her favorite. Her entire wardrobe? Red. Her LED lights? Red. It honestly scares Rudy how red everything is.

-Her voice would either be Jessica Sanchez from American Idol or Gwen Stefani from the No Doubt era. She also covers a lot of No Doubt songs during their concerts. Speaking of covers, the shakers like to sing classic rock songs as well as modern day hits. Scarlett has the vocal range to do Ariana and Mariah Carey justice.

-Her and Marty are best friends. They’re both on the same wavelength and will most likely have the same reaction to memes, like word for word the same reaction. They usually have to get Rudy and Clover out of trouble most days. I love their chaotic, yet chill energy, like the types that just sit and observe and quietly make funny comments to each other.

-She determines whether she likes you or not based off of how good you are at mahjong or poker. If you suck enough to let her win, she’ll love you forever but if you match her in ability, she’ll respect you but kinda fear you as well. If you refuse to play altogether, she hates you. She’s a game theory student, so playing any board game with her is grounds for disaster because she’ll use her weird psychology and tricks to win all the time. Ironically, she sucks at video games. Even though she loves games of chance, she’s hugely against casinos and betting, instead trading small trinkets like food or makeup.

-At the Cheeseria, she set up a poker table, a mahjong table, and a pool table for the entertainment. They unfortunately had to get rid of the Uno table because somebody (ahem, Jojo) got a little too heated over a match with Papa and Wally. And by “got a little too heated”, I mean that Jojo literally got in a fist fight with Papa and lost.

-All she watches are telenovelas. Don’t ask about The Office or Game of Thrones, all she knows is stuff like Rubi and Maria la del Barrio.

-She doesn’t like musical theater except for Phantom of the Opera. She has taken a few roles as Kim in Miss Saigon, but secretly regrets it because musical theater is so much harder than just a regular concert. She still respects theater actors, but will never again sit through Anything Goes.

-She is the only one of the workers who has managed to successfully punch Guy Mortadello. Koilee and Rudy came close, but Scarlett landed an especially hard punch to his nose. Next to being engaged and forming Scarlett and the Shakers, she says it’s the third happiest day of her life. Now, Guy Mortadello is extremely scared of Scarlett and will cry if he sees her or hears her song on the radio (which is all the time).

-She has a tattoo of a heart of her hand along with a crown. On three of her fingers are a yellow Diamond, green clover, and blue spade.

-Scarlett is absolutely gorgeous and badass, I always kept rewinding Papas Cheeseria just to see her and Rudy in the opening because I had crushes on them both. Anyways, stan Scarlett for good grades (it’s not working though I’m still failing two classes)

your favorite place: the streets of vegas at night are such a wild experience and I can’t get over that vibe and how it never seems to feel old despite how many times I’ve been there. its stolen all my stuff and I still want to go back to see the lights and walk the floors.

your favorite memory: very much sitting on the basement floor with my dad and brother.. my dad had just bought a super nintendo and was playing donkey kong country and narrating the experience while my brother and I looked on in utter AMAZEMENT.

Band Opinions 🎶

Today I want to talk about some of the stereotypes or opinions of different instruments in the band/orchestra because the band and music is a major part of my life in general. I'll start with the string instruments, then woodwinds, brass, then percussion and others.

String Instruments 🎻

Violins

In the spotlight a lot of the time

Terrifying notation

Im a lefty so like it sounds like itd be awkard to hold

Ew alto clef

Zero spotlight

Underrated

Chapter 2: A Breath of Fresh Air

Summary

Chapter 1

Bucky’s heart pounded as he entered the music room, the familiar but almost-forgotten smell of polished brass and well-used sheet music meeting him like a warm embrace. The space was larger than he’d expected, filled with soft echoes of past rehearsals and pieces of music lingering in the walls. It felt alive, like it had seen countless performers pour their hearts into every note. He took a deep breath, hoping it would steady the nerves tugging at him.

“Hey, Buck!” Steve called from across the room with a warm smile. The drummer was setting up, his focus and energy unmistakable. “Didn’t think you’d actually make it.”

Bucky returned the smile, his tension easing just a little. “Yeah, well… you twisted my arm,” he replied, only half-joking.

Steve gave him an encouraging nod from where he was, gesturing for Bucky to find his seat. “Grab a spot next to Sam,” he called, flashing a thumbs-up.

Sam was already there, adjusting his music stand with an easygoing grin on his face. “So you’re the famous trumpet player Steve’s been telling us about, huh?” he teased, nudging Bucky as he sat down. Sam played the bugle, and there was an infectious excitement in his voice. “Can’t wait to see you in action.”

Bucky chuckled nervously, gripping his trumpet case. “Yeah, let’s hope I can still manage a few notes,” he murmured. It had been so long since he last played—almost another lifetime. His mind drifted to memories of the army, where he’d first learned the trumpet, the sound of it giving him a sense of grounding even amid the chaos. But now, with his metal arm and a long stretch of silence between him and the instrument, he didn’t know how he’d fare.

Across the room, Natasha waved at him, her flute resting on her lap as she chatted with Wanda, who was preparing her clarinet. Clint sat nearby, adjusting his bassoon with a focused expression, glancing over to share a friendly nod with Bucky. Peter, sitting with his percussion instruments, gave him a thumbs-up, looking thrilled to see him there. Bucky raised his hand in return, feeling a bit of his apprehension ease with each familiar face he spotted.

As he settled in, a warm laugh rang out from nearby, clear and bright like a melody in itself. Bucky looked up and spotted a young woman with wavy brown hair, her eyes alight as she laughed at something Natasha had said. She had an easygoing warmth to her, gesturing as she spoke, her hands moving as animatedly as her voice.

Sam leaned over, nodding in her direction. “Tara,” he said quietly. “She’s… well, she’s someone you’ll want to meet. Plays the oboe, and she’s one of those people who lights up a room, y’know?”

Bucky nodded, his curiosity piqued. Tara’s energy seemed magnetic, adding a new brightness to the already lively room. For the first time since he’d arrived, he felt a hint of eagerness mixing in with his nerves.

Before he could take in more, Nick Fury’s voice cut through the hum of voices in the room. “All right, people. Let’s get this session started. We’re here to make music, so I hope you’re all ready to work.” His commanding presence was softened by a hint of amusement as he took in the group, his hands clapping for attention.

Bucky adjusted his grip on his trumpet, lifting it to his lips as they started to play. The first note came out a little unsteady, but he adjusted quickly, finding his balance as he played, letting the music carry him. Each note felt like a piece of himself he was rediscovering, something long lost but deeply familiar.

The music filled the room, voices merging as the players found their collective rhythm. For a moment, Bucky closed his eyes, feeling at home again. He’d forgotten how grounding it felt, how playing took him out of his head and into a flow he couldn’t find anywhere else.

He stole one more glance at Tara, who was focused on her sheet music, seemingly unaware of the impression she’d already made. As they moved through the piece, he couldn’t help but feel a spark of something new, an excitement he hadn’t expected to find here.

But no matter, Hux played saxophone in a dance band anyway

Band ships (Flute Edition)

I may or may not do this for other instruments as well (but I’m planning to)

Flute x Flute:

Both are extremely quiet, one in a shy way one in a mild threatening way

A couple that mostly keeps to themselves, but when they do interact they seem very sweet and docile (most of the time, will screech high notes at you if threatened)

Pass notes in band class, Band Director turns a blind eye since both are mostly well behaved and decent players as well

Flute x Piccolo:

Will play beautiful duets in class whenever there’s a break

Probably the top two flutists, Piccolo being first chair and Flute not being far behind

Piccolo keeps getting told to play piccolo because they’re the only one in the band who can do it and be the least sharp

Power couple, two of the most talented people in the entire band and they are overly humble about it

Compliment wars, since Flute is the better flute player out of the both of them but can’t play Piccolo so Flute insists they’re inferior

Flute x Clarinet:

The clarinet is a total crackhead, which slowly gets flute out of their shell

Flute is the sweetest thing, and is always willing to listen

Clarinet is just constantly touch starved and hugging Flute, which just makes Flute quietly smile

Flute x Trumpet:

Trumpet is a lot more insecure than Flute originally thought

Flute may seem quiet but can and will fight you if you insult Trumpet

Trumpet is happy to have someone to vent to

A very dorky and cute couple despite expectations

Flute x Bassoon:

Flute will occasionally pretend to their friends Bassoon isn’t in band and made up a weird sounding instrument to pretend that they are in band with Flute

Bassoon is a quiet kind of chill but is extremely talented and probably also plays a low reed instrument

Flute is more upbeat and is one of the only people who can make Bassoon smile outside of when they’re messing with Band Director

Make an awesome (if somewhat unconventional) duet, and play together all the time

Flute x Oboe:

Flute looks up Oboe jokes and says them in class constantly, to which Oboe replies with flute jokes they already know and didn’t have to look up

Two of the most out of tune people in the band, especially when they try to tune together and both end up so sharp Band Director cuts themself

Secretly a very cliché couple, content to just be around eachother making jokes or just sitting happily in silence

Flute x Bass Clarinet:

Bass Clarinet is frequently absent, but Flute convinces them to come to band occasionally

Bass Clarinet is considered one of the coolest people in the band, and Flute is happily their background support

Flute is always stressed out on Bass Clarinet’s behalf, Bass Clarinet is very chill but appreciates Flute’s concern

Bass Clarinet never gets enough sleep, which means sleeping with their head on top of Flute’s on the band bus

Flute x French Horn:

French horn is very unique and kind of weird by most people’s standards, but Flute has liked them for years

French Horn grows to like Flute seemingly out of the blue and Flute becomes a lovesick mess

They’re happy dorks together, and most people view them as odd, but they’re fine with that

They have conversations about literally all of the weirdest things. Take any of their conversations out of context and all the other instruments would ask Band Director to put them in a mental hospital, but their conversations are all good natured

Flute x Saxophone:

Flute plays everything in the highest octave while Saxophone blasts the lowest octave they can while playing meme songs (so much Seven Nation Army)

Flute would fight anyone who insulted saxophone, but Saxophone would fight them first and win

Saxophone is more of an egoist than people expect trumpet to be, but is also considerate of others feelings (and Flute appreciates that)

Saxophone breaks Flute out of their shell and people start wondering if Flute was always this much of a crackhead underneath their shy appearance

Flute x Euphonium:

Euphonium is a meme lord and found the need to educate Flute about vine and tiktok

Flute finds tiktok cringe but gets addicted to it anyway because Euphonium’s videos are hilarious and adorable

Euphonium’s weirdness and Flute’s mellowness balance out and everyone thinks they’re adorable

Euphonium is, in fact, adorable until someone calls their instrument a baritone, then Euphonium is slightly angry and adorable

Flute x Baritone:

Baritone is also a meme lord but found educating Flute about meme formats and reddit more pertinent

Flute calls Baritone a Euphonium every once in a while just to annoy them, to which Baritone calls them a Piccolo

They quietly share the same sense of humor, and shoot looks across the band room when Band Director says something they both find funny or can reference a meme to

Flute x Tuba:

Tuba is extremely laid back and defensive at the same time, which makes them come off as awkward

Most people except Flute steer clear of Tuba, but Flute finds their awkwardness cute

Tuba tries so hard to play well and finds it frustrating when Flute can (seemingly effortlessly) play better than them

Flute and Tuba play in a duet where Flute tries to help Tuba with phrasing and articulation even though they know nothing about playing a brass instrument

Flute x Trombone:

Trombone is a total crackhead who is also a major dork

Flute pretends to think they’re above Trombone but in reality admires that they can be themself all the time

Flute constantly asks to try Trombone’s trombone, and does the “slidy thingy” all the time

Trombone asks to try Flute’s flute once and can’t even make one sound, and Flute just laughs so Trombone keeps trying because they love Flute’s laugh

Flute x Percussion:

No one knows how they became a couple

POLAR OPPOSITES

Percussion is a complete idiot, always doing things that might hurt them or others because they didn’t think before they acted

Flute claims Percussion as “their idiot” and Percussion is fine with this as long as they get to keep trying things like chucking mallets at the bass drum from across the band room and trying to time it right to play songs

Band Director is baffled why a good student like Flute would ever date Percussion and makes jokes about it in class all the time
