Chiron is Virgos ruling planet, and I'm a Virgo Sun/Moon, and 6 other placements in the 6th House of everyday life. Some of those Virgo placements are opposite (difficult push and pull which eventually motivates resolution) my anaretic (ending journey) Pisces (truth vs. Illusion) Ascendant (cosmic purity).

Man, knowing what Lupa did to Gwen, it is no wonder Jason behaved the way he did. I know why Percy felt good while he was there. But even more then Chrion, it seems pretty clear Percy would not have enjoyed the psychological warfare of Miami long term. Actually, that's one of my favorite parts of your fic. I love that while he's in it, getting heaped with praise, he's like "clearly, this is the place for me" and then goes home and immediately sees that he's wrong.

Thank you! Yes, there are some red flags with Miami. At the end of the day, I think both directors are hard to read but in totally different ways. Chiron is so reserved, Percy never knows where he stands, where as Lupa can be so open, but can also turn on you very quickly.

A big reason Percy feels so good in Miami that, simply, he's basically on vacation. He's got nothing to prove there. He gets to just show up and do his little dance, and then go get food with his old and new friends. He felt like he was under a lot of pressure in New York, but it wasn't because Chiron was demanding something of him; it was his own ambition. He's free of that in Miami, and it feels good for him to remember what it is to just have fun and let go while dancing. It's an important lesson and growth moment for him as well, to just remember that he loves what he does. (I think Annabeth learns the same lesson in her time off from the company as well). But if he'd stayed in Miami, that pressure and ambition would have inevitably returned in some way, if not worse because Lupa can be more forthcoming with her demands of her dancers.

It is an environment that can work for some people -- I think Rachel, Reyna, and Hazel are genuinely thriving -- but others, like Jason, just get burnt out on it. And there is a give and take with it: Lupa knows that if she's going to yell at dancers, they might yell back, and she's okay with that. She understands that this is a career with a lot of emotional intensity, and she makes space for that. Her praise of Percy is not disingenuous; she is genuinely supportive and caring of her dancers. In contrast, Chiron doesn't know what to do with dancers' feelings. Annabeth is like a daughter to him, but when she is in his office sobbing as she recounts a decade of abuse Chiron failed to see, and he just goes "what if you took a vacation?"

Although, Lupa did kind of fuck over Reyna by letting Jason go. I think Reyna is maybe starting to feel like, with Jason gone, she's being pushed out in favor of Rachel and Hazel, which is a feeling only punctuated by Lupa's desire to hire Percy -- a dancer who is a little too short for Reyna to dance with regularly.
